Summer was over and the teacher was asking the class about their vacations. She turned to little Johnny and asked what he did over the summer. “We visited my grandmother in Minneapolis, Minnesota,” he said. “That sounds like an excellent vocabulary word,” the teacher said, “Can you tell the class how you spell that?” Little Johnny thought about it and said, “Come to think of it, she lives in Ohio.”

Ever wonder what it takes to be a full-time artisan? Where does artistic inspiration come from?
ence by turning salvaged local wood into high quality furniture. See the tree’s journey from tree to table at their Duncan studio.
Over the course of three days, twelve professional, full-time artisans will open their studio doors to share experiences and showcase their work.
Andreas & Naomi Kunert create timeless art pieces at the Ancient Art of Stone Studio Gallery. Their Inspiration flows directly from the pure forms and rhythms inherent within nature.
Each piece of work is original and each, a labour of love reflecting the highest professional standards. “Our tours encompass work through many mediums but the thread that weaves us together as a group is rooted in high-quality creation of art in the Cowichan Valley” Says founding member Cathi Jefferson. “...we aim to inspire those that walk through and experience our spaces”. Cathi Jefferson has been creating pottery for over 40 years. Inspired by the natural environment that surrounds her, alongside the Cowichan River, her studio is a must see. Acrylic painter Laurel Hibbert draws memories of her childhood into her paintings. Her work is notable for its vibrant colour and its story telling quality. “Painting is my joy and I hope others find themselves experiencing that joy when they view my work.” Says Laurel.
Peggy Brackett works with color and creates a line of beautiful dichroic glass jewellery. Every piece is carefully designed and crafted with a crisp, clean finish. Jo Ludwig is a self-taught fine glass artist best known for his glittering kiln-formed, one-of-a-kind ‘Things Of Beauty’. Mary Fox creates stunning forms in glass and ceramics in vivid tones and rich textures at her Ladysmith studio. Jennifer Lawson’s 1863 log house studio is the perfect place from which to paint. Jennifer has been creating scenes with watercolors for over 40 years. Karen Trickett and Cam Russell of Coventry Woodworks, can be seen working on incredible furniture designs in their Cobble Hill studio.
Ken Broadland’s main goal in turning wood is to present the wood’s beauty in a useable form. His Heartwood Studio is nestled in woodland next to his log home.
Arwen and Bonnie Schmaus are a mother/daughter team that custom design upholstered furniture in their studio on Herd Rd.

We are pleased to give you the following shows in the Chapel for the month of April. Tickets available at Providence Farm or thru Eventbrite. 7:30 - 10pm.
I began putting on house concerts five or six years ago and the popularity grew, so I decided to rent space to hold bigger shows, from which grew a formal business I named Barely North Entertainment. I selected the Chapel at Providence Farm as the main venue to use, as I like the vibe of the room, and the natural acoustics. On occasion I will use other rooms, and am actually looking for a more permanent location to expand what we can offer the community, and hopefully help the music scene thrive and become a musical mappoint. The business is a family affair, with my wife Erika running the bar (events are generally licensed), and the kids help with many different aspects, as well as wonderful friends who volunteer. The driving force behind the company is a borderline unhealthy obsession with everything music - we all play instruments, and always have music on. I like the exposure my children have had to the interesting and inspiring artists who play our shows and often stay with us for the night. The whole family has formed special bonds with some really great people from all around the world.

I’m well aware that some of the fringe styles of music I’m personally into won’t really be what appeals to my audiences, so I carefully select artists that I feel are doing something unique that gets me excited, while being music that can just be a soundtrack to a really fun night out. The variety of shows each month ensures there is always something people can get excited about - and maybe even discover something new! I’ll often bring in a stripped down version of a band, or even one key member, so that the audience will have an opportunity to hear songs they know, but in a different light. I love to share musical experiences with people, and I think it creates a special bond when you are part of an exclusive club for a night and can reminisce about music you experienced together. The shows are intimate, and we are able to all visit and meet new people, as well as hang out with the artist and get to know them in a way you just can’t in conventional settings.

Ahhhh, Spring! What does it mean to you? Longer days, warmer nights, blooming flowers? Well, to thirty-odd Cowichan Valley citizens it means Roller Derby Season!! Your very own Brass Knuckle Derby Dames have been hard at work honing their skills on the oval track to bring you thrills, spills and awe inspiring maneuvers as they take on long-time rivals the Victoria Hardcores. Junior teams The Tempest vs Rotten Apples will open-up the evening at 5:30 and the half time show will be a performance by Roller Skate Victoria. What better way to spend a Saturday evening than enjoying a tasty beverage brought to you by Chemainus’s Riot Brewing Co. - official sponsor of the Brass Knuckles - and watching some full contact sports on wheels! And what’s that you say? You’ve always wanted to try your hand (or should I say feet) at derby? Well friends, look no further! These Knuckleheads want YOU! No skating or derby experience necessary! All you do is show up! We will provide you with skates and safely gear, teach you how to use them and motivate you to be all that you can be! Fresh meat intake (that’s what we call recruitment day) is April 9th , 6:30 PM at Mellor Hall in the Cowichan Exhibition Grounds. For further information on these events and more, you can reach out to the BKDD crew on our FB page or by email at bkddderby@gmail.com

VANCOUVER ISLAND’S PREMIERE SUPPLIER OF RENTAL & CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT
At Island Equipment Rentals, we have a “large” selection of mini excavators. From 4,000lb rubber track units up to 18,000lb steel track units. Each excavator comes with a thumb and interchangeable “Cat or Deere” controls - and we can deliver them for you too. Here is a small list of things to do with a mini excavator that you may want to think about:
structure that must be torn down, a mini excavator is a great time- and labor-saving tool. Without a mini excavator you are going to find yourself demolishing an entire building with cable or chains, a reciprocal saw, a sledge, a wrecking bar or pry bar, and a truck. Repairing Sewer Lines If your maximum depth is not too extreme you can use a mini excavator for basic sewer line repairs. Do ensure you check the depths involved in advance so you know that you don’t need a full-size backhoe instead, and as always with this kind of project, map out utility lines and other obstacles in advance.
Digging Trenches Digging trenches with a mini excavator saves days of back-breaking labor with a shovel. Remember to ascertain in advance where utility lines are so you can carefully avoid them. Remove landscaping and topsoil so you can replace what you want when your trench is finished. Remember to watch the conditions of the soil so your trench won’t cave in.
Installing Water Features DIY water feature projects are safer and easier with a mini excavator. You can use this equipment to dig a pond or trenches for buried electrical lines running to fountains, waterfalls, and other water features. After you use the excavator to dig and level the area and create trenches to a depth of about 20 inches, you can proceed to install your rubber liner, landscaping fabric, and the feature itself.
Digging Holes You may have a variety of reasons to dig deep holes-everything from building a house to putting in a simple fire pit may require this kind of digging. Remember to dig to your desired depth or to your first bench in one place. Then dig the rest of the hole to that depth or bench. You can also use the mini excavator to more easily move the displaced soil far from where you’re working; this way it won’t hamper your progress or cause your hole to cave in.
Putting in Pools and Hot Tubs If you’re trying to install a pool or hot tub in your yard you’ll need some heavy equipment. A mini excavator is often the best choice for this kind of project because unless you have at least 6 or 7 feet of space all around your target area (not to mention a passage this big from the front yard to the back yard) you can’t use a full-size piece of equipment.
Removing Landscaping Features and Stumps If you’ve ever cleared landscaping or removed a tree stump you know that it’s almost always a bigger job than it seems to be at first. Use a mini excavator to remove stumps, landscaping gravel or rocks, and even scrubby brush. And remember to use a stump killer on large enough targets before you try to remove them.
Creating Irrigation Systems Most irrigation systems will require a number of trenches and other digging that is just right for a mini excavator. You can also use the mini excavator to work on other large-scale watering systems.
Tearing Down Small Structures If you have an old shed, garage, barn, or other
We have a large selection of rental tools & equipment from Major Brands. VANCOUVER ISLAND’S PREMIERE SUPPLIER OF RENTAL & CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT
