Jessica Kloppenburg

Tupperware emerged in the post-war era alongside refrigerators at home, Tupperware has been a household product. But today they are much more than bowls and lids that burp. In 1948, the product originally failed in stores, consumers didn’t understand the design and the importance of the seal that locked in freshness. The first party was held in 1949 by a single mom in Detroit, Brownie Wise came to Earl Tupper and suggested parties so their function could be taught. You would be forgiven for thinking the parties went the way of the poodle skirt, but not so, all over the globe there are parties still held, and here on Vancouver Island, more and more parties are cropping up. The products popularity seems to be coinciding with the focus on environmental concerns. Tupperware is know for its high quality plastic and durability with a life time guarantee, but did you know that it is BPA free, dioxin free and phthalate free plus, 100 percent recycled to make plant pots, park benches, low grade pipes and other durable A grade products - thats where all the lids go !! Using Tupperware instead of plastic wraps and disposable containers helps prevent plastics in our landfill. After living on the island for the past 15 years I finally got an invite to a Tupperware party. In walked Jessica Kloppenburg a 29 year old mother of 3, I was truly surprised, I thought all mom’s these days just went for the disposable stuff and to them Tupperware was just what was in grandmas cupboard. I asked Jessica why ? she told me the story of how she was buying the disposable containers for her children’s lunches and drinks but just got fed up with the spills and cracks. After throwing good money after bad she was hopeful that Tupperware would solve the problem, after all her grandmother and mother still used the same containers from when she was a child. Jessica invested in her tupperware and discovered how much longer the vegetables lasted, less food was being thrown out and the investment paid for itself quickly. After spending some time talking to Jessica, I learnt that her Tupperware experience had actually changed her life. Being a busy mom of three, owning a farm with horses, and a husband that worked off the island finding time to do much else seemed impossible. In December 2017 Jessica’s husband was laid off and the pressure of staying a float was daunting. Jessica decided to share her Tupperware story

with others and had a party, making 25% on the sales. within three months she was making good money, and having a whole lot of fun outside of raising a family. “It was liberating”, people love talking about tupperware Jessica laughed with her big smile and said, “I know I’m talking about Tupperware, but it truly is amazing. Jessica’s husband is back at work and she has a new lease on life. The Guinness book of records named Tupperware one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century. In Canada 9 out of 10 homes own at least one piece of the famous plastic. Lots of laughs... ...and big smiles makes for a great starter with Karen and Larry Bailee at the helm.

Larry and Karen have spent most of their lives playing music on everything from the Piano to the banjolin (half banjo half mandolin). Newly weds since 2010, these soul birds discovered that their passion for sharing music and helping others is irresistible. Over flowing with enthusiasm and energy, so much so they started the “Smooth Angel Cafe” in Courtenay in 2013, and then in Campbell River late 2017.

What is Smooth Angel Cafe?

A unique cafe that invites all to come play music or sing. Karen, a registered nurse, and Larry, a mechanic, have been involved in helping new musicians make their break in a tough music world.

Larry says that there are too many young, great singers and musicians that either don’t have enough confidence or they’re too nervous to play in front of a crowd. At the Smooth Angel Cafe, no one plays by themself, we always have instruments and people that will play or sing with you. All ages come to play and watch. For those that don’t want to do the band at the bar gig and all that follows, this is a great way to practice and play with support. On the last Sunday of the month between 7pm - 9pm at the Campbell River SDA Church you can expect to walk into a whole lot of fun with themed nights, such as Elvis, Beatles, Diana Ross which usually sets the direction for the music played that night. We play all sorts, country, blues, jazz, gospel, rock n roll, anything that the crowd want. We raise funds with baked goods, and Larry’s supreme jam making skills that sell on the night. All the money raised goes to a selected charity to help those in need locally and abroad. All musicians /singers invited. Find Smooth Angel Cafe on Facebook or call 250.337.8900 for info.

Books Wanted! Drop off at Discovery Mall next to Subway Starts May 12th 10-2pm then every Saturday till June 16.
