SIMON SAYS Happy New Year Nanaimo!
This year marks 8 years of What’s On Digest in Nanaimo. What’s On Digest is the little magazine that could…I think I can, I think I can. What makes What’s On Digest a success is its focus on local people, events, businesses and life in Nanaimo. This Harbour city, this eclectic group of the old, the new, the young and the seasoned is the place we locals call home and visitors look upon with envy. Nanaimo has grown and changed over the years. Our city has roots in resource-based economies, and this continues to be a prominent economic driver in the region. We have a thriving arts and culture scene, exciting night life (the Nanaimo Bar is the sweetest bar in town), and a robust community of local entrepreneurs fulfilling a variety of needs. The various theatre productions here in Nanaimo bring local, Canadian, and international talent for all to enjoy. Recently the economic impact of Nanaimo’s Vancouver Island University was revealed to be in the neighbourhood of $406 million, generating over $38 million in tax revenues. Nanaimo is becoming a university town full of youth, energy and hope for the future. In addition to the economic impact, VIU brings students from all over the world to our city. Some of these students stay while others move on to brighter lights and bigger cities. Regardless of where the VIU alumni end up it is certain they enjoy and appreciate all that Nanaimo has to offer while they are part of this community. From world class restaurants to exciting outdoor adventures, this is a place with extraordinary vistas and fresh clean air. With just over an hour to drive to Victoria, or only 18 minutes by Helijet to Vancouver, Nanaimo is very well- positioned geographically if you crave the amenities of either of those equally beautiful, exciting cities. From the majestic peaks of the coastal range to the quiet beauty of the Gulf islands: Nanaimo is truly a wonderful part of the world from any perspective. Truly the success of any entrepreneur, any event, any local business and indeed any community is you. The members of a community are what make any place great. Be proud of where you live. Be kind to people you meet on the street or while out shopping locally. Slow down on the roads and always look both ways before crossing the street. The success of Nanaimo is all of ours to enjoy now and for future generations. I have so much hope for the future and am excited to jump into 2020 with both feet and with a smile on my face. © Rideout Communications 2020

NANAIMO’S OWN!
BITRATE COMPUTER SERVICES
Microsoft is ending its support for Windows 7 on January 14, 2020. If that is the operating system you have on your personal computer or laptop, you have a decision to make. And soon. Personal computers (PCs) with Windows 7 will still work after support has ended, but they will be vulnerable to hackers and viruses because they will no longer receive software updates - including security updates – from Microsoft - Consequently it would not be wise to do ANY online banking or anything else that entails personal information. Microsoft will also be stopping any Technical support past the ending date. To get Windows 10 you need to upgrade your existing device. All Windows 7 devices should be compatible with Windows 10. Steve at Bitrate Computers will help steer you in the right direction and can upgrade you for 160.00 and that includes the

Do you have water retention issues or know someone who does? The best way to combat water retention is through regular exercise. If you exercise every day for 40-60 minutes, it can be extremely helpful in getting rid of excess fluids. You can, of course, engage in activities such as biking, running, or even walking. These exercises can assist your body in flushing out excess salt from your body in the form of sweat. Such activities also increase urine flow, and thereby reduce excess body fluids. For many of us it can be hard to maintain the workout regimen. For this reason, Body Tempo Health and Fitness has many programs designed specifically for people who have a challenge sticking with a program. Call us

Managing the Tax Impact of Diversifying Experienced investors know the “golden rule” of diversification: a portfolio should not be too heavily weighted in one region, sector or asset class. You may find yourself holding a concentrated position of a certain security but concerned about the tax implications of selling if you have a large unrealized capital gain in a non-registered account. It may be suitable to consider strategies that could help manage the tax implications such as: • Spreading out the capital gain over multiple tax years; • Consider tax loss selling and using tax loss carryforwards; • Consider making an RRSP contribution; • Consider an in-kind donation of securities. These and other possible strategies should be discussed with an Investment Advisor and a qualified tax advisor to determine which are most suitable for your circumstances. U N T I L J A N U A RY 1 9, 2 02 0 In rocky mounds, boulders, and cliffs, when shadows fall, where lichen grows, where cracks appear, we see faces. However grotesque, we see ourselves. This desire to be reflected in the stony landscape also has scientific grounding, as we are made of minerals. But this empathy with the land has limits. What do shareholders and mine operators perceive as they level entire mountains? How are we reflected in tar sands operations that move more sediment in a year than all of the world's rivers combined? How do we understand the discrepancies between those who profit from extraction and those who feel the effects? Who is burdened with the role of witnessing and how much can they endure? We project our visages onto the land, but a Stone Witness sees it differently and can give testimony for millennia. Through drawing, video, and sculpture, artworks by Abbas Akhavan, Tanya Busse, and Liljana Mead Martin consider human cultures of extraction in relation to geological time. Works in the exhibition include paintings made with organic light sensitive materials on paper made of stone, a video installation that conjures resistance to the resource extraction that fuels the military industrial complex, and sculptural works that trace connections between the body and the violence of the endless excavation and construction in the built environment. This exhibition is set in a place with a very specific relationship to geology. Nanaimo, BC is a former coal mining town on the territory of the Snuneymuxw people, marked by petroglyphs carved in stone that speak to origin stories and cultural rights to the land, and undercut by mine shafts extracted through one hundred years of subaltern labour. That Nanaimo rides the northern edge of the Cascadia subduction zone makes the site of this exhibition even more resonant. Thinking across geological time, Stone Witness takes place in a year in which Nanaimo Art Gallery asks "what are generations?"

Pet Tips A New Year a new routine! Many of us start to think about exercise this time of year. We resolve to get fit; we make non-specific goals and most of the time they fall apart.
through quickly. Get them out and going, they will eventually realize that they don’t have much of a choice. We can keep track of weight loss goals and help with nutrition consultations to meet those goals. Mostly, we want you to join us. We are going to be walking our dogs, and we want you to come and with us. If you have any questions, if you want to start a weight loss program, or if you want to get help with nutrition, please don’t hesitate to call us.
This year, I have a suggestion. Look at your dog. He wants to go for a walk. Take him for a walk. Find someone, or a group of someone’s to hold you accountable for taking him for a walk. And then just put on your shoes and go. You will benefit, your dog will benefit. Humans and their dogs share a very special bond. Studies show that when we are together with our dogs, our anxiety decreases, our heart rates and rhythms start to match. The simple act of sitting together can make that happen.
Article by Dr. Julie Lamb Applecross Veterinary Hospital
When you are both out on a walk together the same thing happens, except you get the additional benefits that go with walking. Throw in watching your dog try and show you everything he smells and hears, and you both feel fantastic as those natural rhythms start to match. And no, most dogs don’t notice when it’s raining…but they definitely pick up on our reluctance. Even those guys that are reluctant about being out in the rain will benefit from the walk. Get them a rain slick if they soak

The Joe Cocker Experience
This event came together after we heard Danny Bee (aka “Joe”) sing on stage one night a few years ago. His voice and mannerisms are so much like Joe Cocker’s, it made our heads spin. At that point it was a matter of building the band around him. After a serious vetting process – the result is an incredibly talented band – including 2 female singers; 2 keyboard players; 2 horn players; a percussionist; bass; drums; guitar; and of course, Dan our singer. We have re-created the band Joe used on his last tour but more specifically, the band he used in Cologne, Germany on April 22, 2013. The music is all Cocker and sung only like Joe could. Songs like “With A Little Help from My Friends”, “Leave Your Hat On”, The Letter” to name a few and including new songs off his latest album “Fire It Up” – which shares the name of his last tour. With a sense of urgency to work out the small details, “The Joe Cocker Experience” is everything you would expect from a live performance from the great Joe Cocker. As for our singer Dan, no matter where we play, after each of our performances, we get asked the same question, “where’d ya find this guy – he sounds just like Joe Cocker!!?
The result is an “all-star” band made up of these professional musicians: Danny Bee: lead vocals (31 years pro) Daryl Marklinger: lead guitar (21 years pro) Ron McKee: bass guitar (26 years pro) Kristi Kell: lead and backing vocals (25 years pro) Cindy Goebel: lead and backing vocals (25 years pro) Rick McDonough: piano/keyboards (40+ years pro) Earle Gibson: Hammond organ, keyboards, and trombone (39 years pro) Steve Jones: sax, percussion, acoustic guitar, and vocals (40+ years pro) Gerry Pool: drums (40+ years pro)
