THEY DIDN’T TEACH ME THAT IN SCHOOL I was a good student, studying diligently, believing that at the end of 13 long years of school I would be prepared for the real world. I learnt about the reproductive cycle for the five major classes of vertebrates (the mammals were most interesting!); I learnt about Reign of Queen Victoria (glad I never met her); I learnt all the rivers in Russia (never learnt the Canadian ones); I learnt how to write Haiku (that will never pay the bills!) and I learnt to add, subtract and multiply polynomials (among many other things) BUT no one ever taught me about money. I never learnt to balance a cheque book, I didn’t understand the rules of credit cards, I had no idea what a credit bureau was, they never taught me about investing and I had never made a budget. I graduated from high school with NO Financial Literacy. By definition Financial Literacy is the understanding of how money works in the world: how to earn money, how to manage money, how to invest money (turn it into more) and how to donate money to help others. Financial Literacy is the set of skills that allows us to make informed and effective decisions with all of our financial resources. I learned Financial Literacy through the school of hard knocks; it’s not a route I’d recommend, the outcome isn’t guaranteed. I meet with people from all walks of life; I see a variety of nationalities, the young and the old.. The one thing they have in common is that they’re all struggling to manage their finances because their Financial Literacy is low. I can’t agree with them more when they say: “I wish I learned this in school!”

DANCING IN THE BELLY OF THE DRAGON In association with the 2013 Dragon Boat Festival July 4 to July 7 Crimson Coast Dance Society presents 4 days of outdoor staged cultural dance performances, workshops and dialogue. For the first time two iconic Nanaimo festivals join forces to create a bigger, better and shared experience for Nanaimo dragon boaters and dance lovers.

Expect to see high calibre, professional dance on the stages throughout the weekend of boat races and dedications. Together we celebrate life, support fund raising for breast cancer research and collaborate to create a memorable weekend for everyone. Events take place at Maffeo Sutton Parkís out door stages and the Nanaimo Conference Centre.

Crimson Coast Dance Society Ìs 13th annual InFrinGinG Dance Festival, Dancing In The Belly Of The Dragon, features traditional cultural dances from India, Spain, Brazil, Quebec, local Metis jiggers and First Nations dance which features local Snuneymuxw Dance Group and Le La La Dancers (Kwakwakaíwakw). Most performances will take place on the outdoor stages as will classes and workshops. Bodhi’s

Artisan Bakery I recently sat down for a chat with Bill Clay the owner of Bodhi’s Bakery located adjacent to the Quilted Duck and Kimberley’s Fashions (see back cover) in one of Nanaimo’s most beautiful and picturesque shopping and eating areas known as the Boardwalk On Rutherford (Top of Rutherford hill). We are very fortunate to have so many talented and dedicated people in Nanaimo which I think we sometimes don’t realize! WO: How long have you been a baker? Bodhi’s: I have been a pastry chef & baker for 25 years and worked in Nanaimo, Vancouver and Whistler. I’m actually a graduate of the VIU chef school! WO: I see the term Artisan is embedded in the name of your bakery. What does the term artisan in this context refer to? Bodhi’s: It means that everything we do is handmade – that’s part of the reason we start at 3AM and sometimes earlier! WO: Where do your customers primarily come here from? Bodhi’s: We see customers from all over the island. We have regulars from all around Nanaimo but also from Duncan and Parksville and Qualicum Beach. The boardwalk area is really something of a destination and we benefit from that more and more. WO: What makes Bodhi’s distinct from other bakeries? Bodhi’s: We make everything we sell. Bread, pastries, cinnamon buns everything. We have a flour mill on-site and we actually grind our own flour. Our products have no preservatives, no chemicals, no trans-fats. WO: There’s a rustic feel around here. How do old school values inform the way you run your bakery? Bodhi’s: We wanted this place to feel like a French bakery in small town France in terms of both the setting and the ambience. The croissants we make are the same as you’d find in Paris and people tell us that all the time. WO: ...well now I simply have to try one... Bodhi’s: Wait – I’ll grab you one...(Bill goes off and comes back with a croissant) WO: (eating) That is the best croissant I’ve ever had...and I’m not just saying that.

WO: So tell me – what is your favorite Bodhi’s bakery goodie? Bodhi’s: I like the apple danish which has a roasted apple puree, cinnamon, strusel topping and pastry cream. WO: Sounds amazing – can’t wait to try that next time! So do you have anything you’d like to add? Bodhi’s: Yes. My wife and business partner Candice Jones does all the pastries and makes all the bread with me every morning. She is a trained pastry chef, baker and barrista. Our customers tell us that our coffee drinks are among the very best. It’s really a team effort and I couldn’t do it without her. PET TIP The most common injuries that we see in dogs that run are paw pad injuries, muscle strain, and tendon rupture. Most of these injuries occur because our dogs just want to run...they don’t think that they are working too hard or starting too fast. The only thing going through their heads is that they’ve been cooped up forever (even if it’s only been two or three hours) and they want to feel the wind in their ears. It’s up to us to help them prevent injuries. The most common area for tendon injuries in the dog is the knees. Yes, dogs have knees. They are the joint on the back leg tucked up next to their tummy. Most of the time, if this tendon gets damaged, it is very severe. In larger dogs it will not heal without major surgery, and with smaller dogs it can take six to eight weeks, and even after that may require surgery to fix. Most of the injuries to this tendon happen in the spring, usually during the first few warm days. This is because our friend the couch potato has been lounging it up all winter out of the rain with his favorite chew toy. Then we get a string of warm days and everyone breaks out in cabin fever. The trails are full of people and dogs and a spare field becomes a dog park overnight. If you or I got off the couch after a winter of avoiding the rain and took off at a full sprint across a field, we would be very sore. When our fourlegged friends do it, they can overextend the knee and rupture that tendon. Give them a few days of fast-paced leash-walking to lubricate those joints before letting them sprint that field! Let them build up some stamina before taking them on the longer runs. So, what do you do if your dog does rupture a tendon? Picture this: you are out on a run and your buddy is loping up ahead and comes back holding up a paw. First, don’t panic. Get him to come to you and set him up for a belly rub so that you can have a look at that leg. Check the paw pads and the toenails by looking for blood on the foot and peering around the base of each nail. Then start up the leg, feeling for any abnormalities - compare it to the other side if you can. If you find a sore spot or an injury, make a note and start heading home at a walk. Let your dog be the guide if he wants to take it slow but slow him down by gently tugging on the leash if he wants to take off and start sprinting again. If the injury seems to ìwalk outî let him rest the leg for a few days and then take him for a short run to see how he does. When do you take him to the doctor? Well...some things are obvious: serious bleeding or bleeding that won’t

stop, moderate to severe swelling or if the limb does not appear to be in a normal position. If there’s nothing as obvious as a fracture or bleed...it could be a bit of muscle strain. If you think this is the case, give him 24 hours, then take him in if there is no improvement. If he does improve but then gets worse again after a short ìtestî run, he will need some extra care. Whatever you do, DO NOT give him any human pain medication that you can get over-the-counter. Dogsí systems are not built like ours and do not react the same way to these medications. As a diesel engine saves up to one third fuel per mile than gas powered engines, it is considered to be very fuel efficient. It uses higher compression ratios and

combustion temperatures. Though diesel is a non renewable source and releases carbon dioxide into the air, it does so at a much less threatening and harmful rate compared to gas. Diesel cars are more efficient in terms of the average miles they give per litre of fuel. You can save more money on fuel with a diesel car, by following some simple tips. Diesel cars can save you money, if driven carefully taking care in consideration your speed. Driving faster generates more power, using more fuel. You can save a considerably large amount by slowing down a few miles an hour. You can keep your speed at the posted limit, while driving on the highway thereby saving about 20% of diesel. If you keep your car moving without having to stop, you can save diesel, which in turn saves you some money on fuel. Driving in congested traffic or starting and stopping the car very often while driving will end up in using more diesel than that spent by staying in steady motion. You can try to find out some alternate routes to aid in saving fuel. Air conditioners in the diesel cars use a lot of power. If you turn the AC unit on, it causes the power to get diverted to the compressor for emitting the cold air into the car. Diesel engines need to work harder in order to compensate the power that was lost. Hence, more amount of diesel is used to keep the speed of the car up. It is therefore advisable to turn the air conditioner off, whenever possible.
