Seaview
Game Farm is 168 acres of farm located on one mile of pristine waterfront at Miracle Beach. Purchased by Paul Pfleger in 1973 it was transformed from a swampland and developed for hay, forage and crops. The intent of the farm was to build an environment where humans and animals could coexist in the grandest environments. Over the years, barns, houses, greenhouses, retail store and accommodations have been constructed. Today over 200 head of Fallow Deer, 25 grass fed Highland Cattle and several laying hens, Goats, Alpacas, Lama’s, and a very happy Pig all live on the farm. In the spring and summer months, fresh fruits and vegetables are grown. Retail sales of Venison Meat, Beef, Eggs, fresh produce and specialty homemade products made with ingredients grown and raised on the farm. Seaview Game Farm has quickly become Vancouver Islands favourite destination to experience and soak up the working farm life.
19
Offering unique and private accommodation in a Yurt and four serviced RV sites. You will also find a large covered area with BBQ’s for family gatherings ideal for weddings and reunions all nestled on the farm with a spectacular waterfront and mountain view. For day trips, get a group together, bring the kids and take a farm tour, feed the animals and enjoy our picnic site. Tours run 7 days in the summer. Treat yourself to roasted speciality coffee, and locally grown farm produce. Visit our website for more information, seaviewgamefarm.com

$$$$ $$ DOLLAR EN E $ $ Your Financial Report Card
27
By Sue Grubac
You thought when you graduated from high school that you’d seen the end of report cards. Your credit report is your financial report card and it rates you on your borrowing and bill-paying habits. There are two credit bureaus in Canada: Equifax and Trans Union which, in simple terms, function like clubs. They gather information about your financial affairs and sell it to their members for profit. All the big banks and lenders belong to the clubs and share any little tidbit of financial gossip with lenders, employers, landlords and insurance companies. For example, if you bank at RBC then RBC will report everything they know about you and your financial transactions to the credit bureau. When you go to Ford to get a car loan, Ford will have access to all the information that RBC knows about you. Your Credit Report is much like a school report card: you are given a numeric rating, called a FICO or Beacon Score, which indicates how well you’ve managed your finances and the risk you represent for lenders. Scores range from 300 to 900. The higher your score, the lower the risk you represent: Below 500
F
Very high risk
550 – 599
C–
Moderately high risk
C+

500 – 549 600 – 649 650 – 699 700 – 800 800+

Unlike schools, the Credit Bureaus don’t send you a regular reports letting you know how well or how poorly you’re doing. If you want to see your Credit Report you have to request it (www.equifax.ca or
www.transunion.ca ). Imagine going through years of school without a report card. You head out to get a job and your potential employer pulls your report card and, to your surprise, you’ve had a D in English for the past 5 years! The moral of the story is: request a copy of your credit report and see how you’re doing. If there are mistakes or problems, get them fixed. Everyone has the potential to have great credit!

The Alberni Project (TAP) is a Canadian WWII memorial and exhibit located in Comox BC. Founded in 2000 by American Lewis Bartholomew in Seattle Washington, TAP began as a simple website memorial to the men who served on HMCS Alberni between 1941 and 1944, Bartholomew’s inspiration for this tribute to these Canadians came from seeing a print of the painting HMCS Alberni by Pat Burstall, CSMA on the Queen of Alberni Ferry between the Mainland and Vancouver Island. Bartholomew was so moved by seeing this painting and the plaque beneath it which told of the 59 crewman who died when torpedoed off the Isle of Wight that he returned to Seattle, quit his job and began the Alberni Project. In 2002 TAP moved to Vancouver Island when Bartholomew immigrated to Courtenay and continued to grow in size and scope.
TAP is now run by The Alberni Project Society in Courtenay and runs the year round TAP Museum in the Comox Centre Mall which opened 1 September 2013. TAP also manages the mobile memorial and exhibit which covers all of Vancouver Island and an ever growing website. More than 3000 people visited the TAP museum or mobile exhibits in 2013. TAP continues to grow with expanding exhibits and stories of Canadians in WWII as well as sponsoring guest exhibits from other museums which relate to the story of Canada during the Second World War. Located at the BLUE ARCH ENTRANCE at the Comox Centre Mall, TAP is open Tuesday - Saturday 10 am - 4 pm. Sundays and Mondays by appointment only (parties of 10 or more with advanced reservations). Admission to all TAP exhibits is free (though donations are encouraged). TAP is wheelchair accessible. TAP is available for school groups for field trips or community rental for small social events.

T he Story of HMCS Alberni and U480 The story of HMCS Alberni and U480 begins with the start of WWII. Canada had to build a navy from scratch at the start of the Second World War beginning with a small fleet of seven ships and continuing in size until Canada had the 3rd largest Navy in the world by war’s end. Alberni was built and commissioned in Esquimalt in 1941 and was immediately pressed into convoy escort duty in the Atlantic. There she served in the Battle of the Atlantic and was part of the invasion force in D-Day. In August of 1944 she was commanded by Ian Hunter Bell, the youngest commander of the Royal Canadian Navy at the time. Shortly before noon, as most of her crew were at mess for their lunch the German Uboat U-480 slipped past Alberni’s radar and torpedoed Alberni near her propeller shaft. Alberni sank in 30 seconds with the loss of 59 of the ship’s company. Hans J. Forster, who happened to be the youngest commander in the Kriegsmarine (German Navy) was awarded the Iron Cross for sinking Alberni and two other allied ships that day. U-480 was able to sneak up on Alberni because of a new technology called Alberich. This was a special rubber coating which made U-480 invisible to asdic (sonar). U-480 was the first German submarine to get this coating and Alberni was the first allied ship to be sunk using this stealth tactic. Six months after Alberni was sunk, fate had another trick up her sleeve when U-480 struck a mine near where Alberni was sunk and she went to the bottom with the loss of her entire crew.

My wife came home yesterday and said, “Honey, the car won’t start, but I know what the problem is.” I asked her what it was, and she told me there was water in the carburetor. I thought for a moment, then said, “You know, I don’t mean this offensively, but you don’t know the carburetor from the accelerator.” “No, there’s definitely water in the carburetor,” she insisted. “OK Honey, that’s fine, I’ll just go take a look. Where is it?”
