Jazz
DIXIELAND march 14, 2014 story by BRENDA GOUGH
J
azz lovers will have an opportunity to hear one of Vancouver Island’s finest music ensembles when Bill Cave & the Desperation Jazz Band make an appearance at the McMillan Arts Centre (MAC) on Friday March 14. The MAC is now featuring jazz evenings with concerts scheduled on the 2nd Friday of each month right through to the fall.
The jazz concert series is just one of the new initiatives being launched to keep the historic arts venue thriving in Parksville. Cave is a well-known local musician and he is bringing together some veteran musicians to play some great Dixieland pieces such as Back Home in Indiana, Muskrat Ramble and Georgia. Even non-jazz fans will be familiar with Dixieland era tunes like When the Saints Go Marchin' In. The band’s repertoire focuses on music which is sometimes referred to as hot jazz or New Orleans jazz. The style developed in the city of New Orleans during the 1900s then spread to Chicago and New York by New Orleans bands in the 1910s. Cave said his Desperation Jazz Band has evolved over the years but there are still members from the original group.
Cave, who plays the trumpet and piano player Tom Pagdin, are the remaining original members of the band which was formed more than 30 years ago with the express intent to just have fun with the traditional jazz compositions of the 1920s and 1930s.
Rounding out the current talented ensemble is Claudio Fantinato on clarinet and sax; Jean-Yves Belanger on trombone; Wayne Fenucan on drums and Barry Miller on bass. Cave said their repertoire rooted in Dixieland and seasoned with some swing and blues is guaranteed to get people on the dance floor. He said that when the band did a gig at the MAC last June, the dance floor was packed with couples jiving and doing the lindy hop. He said this month’s event is sure to capture the spirit of the dance hall scene that prompted those dance forms and others such as the black bottom, Charleston, fox trot, rag, and shimmy and he’s looking forward to the gig. “It will be neat to have the gang back together. We don’t have to rehearse it because we all know the music. Dixieland is what I play the best. Dixieland is happy music and everyone likes it. It is the easiest form of jazz and I do it better than I do anything else,” he acknowledged.

Taste of OCEANSIDE march 29, 2014 story by BRENDA GOUGH
A
Taste of Oceanside is back for its seventh year offering an evening of tasty food at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre (PCCC).
The gastronomic event aims to promote the local hospitality industry in Parksville and Qualicum Beach while at the same time raising funds for the charitable works of Rotary Club of Parksville AM. The evening will also include a silent auction, door prizes and live music. Admission to the delectable event is $15 per person, with food and beverage coupons priced at $1 each. This year there will be 10 restaurants serving some of their delicious menu items. Coupons can be exchanged for tastings from the various food stations and include everything from seafood to soup and of course, decadent desserts. Each restaurant station will offer up to three items priced between one and four coupons each and beverages can be purchased to enhance the tasting
experience. Returning to this years event is Lefty’s Fresh Food which was at the first fundraising event back in 2007. Bob Hodgson, one of the operators of Lefty’s, said they are participating as a way to give back to the community that they have been serving for 18 years. “We have been here a long time and we feel like we are a big part of this community. The event is a worthwhile cause … that is why we participate,” he acknowledged. As for Lefty’s food philosophy, Hodgson said they try to use locally sourced ingredients but they also aim to make their food affordable. “We try to be as fresh as we can be in a small market with breakfast, lunch and dinner. Most restaurants don’t do all three well but we have gone out of our way to make sure each can stand on its own.” Hodgson said his customers who have a sweet tooth appreciate that their desserts are made from scratch. “There are not too many people who make lemon pie from lemons but we do. We still peel our own apples.” Lefty’s will be serving pulled pork sliders, Tuscan wrappetizers and cream of tomato and feta basil soup at the event.

It has a wonderful flavour which is amplified even more once you heat it. Melting the Raclette is what brings out the wonderful flavour. If you have never had it, you have to try it … just ignore the smell.”

JOKE The grocer walked over and, trying to be friendly, asked the boy if he had a lot of laundry to do. “Oh, no laundry,” the boy said. “I’m going to wash my dog.” “But you shouldn’t use this to wash your dog. It’s very powerful and if you wash your dog in this, he’ll get sick. In fact, it might even kill him.” But the boy was not stopped by this and carried the detergent to the counter and paid for it, even as the grocer still tried to talk him out of washing his dog. About a week later the boy was back in the store shopping. The grocer asked the boy how his dog was doing. “Oh, he died,” the boy said. The grocer said, “I tried to tell you not to use that detergent on your dog.” “Well,” the boy replied, “I don’t think it was the detergent that killed him.” “Oh I’m sorry. How did he die?” “I think it was the spin cycle.”

NANOOSE
MONTHLY MARKETS march to october story by BRENDA GOUGH
B
eginning Saturday March 15, there will be some unique vendors all gathered under one roof at Nanoose Place Community Centre. The 2014 Nanoose Monthly Markets will have something for everyone, with 40 vendors selling everything from antiques, clothing and collectibles to baked goods, plants and more. Van Isle Events is organizing the Saturday markets, which will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. starting in March and finishing in October. Last year, the monthly markets were only held over the summer months and were located in the smaller Nanoose Hall with about 15 vendors. This year, the market is four times bigger and features 40 vendors who won’t be limited to selling only the things that they make, bake or grow. Some of the vendors with unique products displayed at the markets will include those that have storefronts as well as others who are home-based operators that people may not yet know about. Admission is a $2 donation to a local charity which will change each month. This month, the Mid Island Abilities & Independent Living Society will be the recipient of the market entrance fees.
The organization, based in Nanaimo, supports and encourages all persons living with disabilities to overcome barriers and lead a more independent lifestyle. Shoppers at the market will also be entertained by students from Parksville’s Forever Yung Dance Studio, who will be doing ballroom dance demos. Dance instructor Ken Yung said the annual Island Fantasy Ball competition is just around the corner and the market will provide a great opportunity to perform in front of a crowd. “The Nanaimo competition is on May 4th … so this is good preparation for students to perform in front of an audience,” Yung pointed out. The teenaged students who competed at the Fantasy Ball in 2013 will not be at this year’s event because they are attending college now, but Yung said they have some new students who are excited about the world of DanceSport. “We have some seven to 10 year olds who are really progressing. At Christmas time they did a choreographed quick step and jive and they all did really well considering they had never performed in front of live audience before.”
