“Make it Happen International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. It has been observed since the 1900's, a time of great expansion and turbulence with the rise of radical ideologies. Today the tradition sees men honouring their mothers, wives, girlfriends, colleagues, with recognition. The new millennium has witnessed a significant change and attitude shift toward equality and liberty. Many of the younger generation feel that all the battles have been won for women, but the complexity of patriarchy still exist. With more women in the boardroom, greater equality in legislative rights, and an increase in impressive role models in every aspect of life, one could think that women have gained true equality. However, there is still much ground to gain, in business, politics, resource management and trades. Great improvements have been made especially in Canada with female astronauts and governing ministers. Women now have real choices. They can work and have a family, so the tones and nature of International Women's Day has, for the past few years, moved from being a reminder about the negatives to a celebration of the positives. Do your bit to ensure that the future for girls is bright, equal, safe and rewarding.

Ken Blackburn’s...
Unveiling Celebrating 10 years The
Sat. March 7th 6:30 pm Rivercity Players Theatre Ken Blackburn, wellknown in Campbell River as public programmer at the Museum and executive director of the Campbell River Arts Council, is unveiling his own newest artistic creation - a never before seen suite of works. At the Rivercity Players Theatre stage, the curtains will literally be drawn back to reveal five major works and additional thematically and stylistically supportive pieces. Mayor Andy Adams will introduce the evening with a discussion of the value of the arts to our community. There will be a musician in the foyer, and a vibrant spoken arts contribution during the program. Blackburn will speak and illuminate the works with seven vignettes, and a discussion of the meaning of pattern in art as it reflects our human reality. As the evening progresses, the audience
is invited to join him on the stage to discuss and enjoy the intricate patterns in the art work. These works reflect Blackburn's personal international experiences and extensive formal education in the arts. The Unveiling of these stunningly beautiful pieces is open to everyone. There will be a no host bar. Admission is by donation.

Tidemark Theatre March 24, 2015 Before Monet and Renoir, Pissarro and Sisley — in other words, before the French Impressionists — there was Turner, one of the greatest of all English painters. J.M.W. Turner was in love with light and what it could do to buildings and cities, to the sea and ships, to the mountains and countryside. Mike Leigh has ventured occasionally into period settings; when he has, he’s achieved some of his subtlest work. His new film, Mr. Turner, is one of his masterworks, a film deeply respectful of its subject whilst probing the darker recesses of the man’s personality. Choosing to focus on the artist in middle age, Leigh finds a strange, antisocial mumbler far more comfortable with canvas and paint than the social niceties demanded of the era. Turner is single-minded in his focus on his art and career, but his interactions with women shape much of the narrative that Leigh details so effectively. Mr. Turner portrays a man dismissive of the mother of his two daughters, predatory toward his housekeeper, and yet ultimately blessed with an unexpected relationship
that arrives in the autumn of his life. Leigh balances the painter’s vagaries and misadventures with his work on some of the great masterpieces of the period: The Fighting Temeraire; Rain, Steam and Speed; Wreckers — Coast of Northumberland. Home and studio life is contrasted with scuffles and politics at the Royal Academy, while the establishment of the time, embodied here in the form of a precocious John Ruskin, comes in for some gentle ribbing. Leigh is blessed with a troupe of wonderful actors, most notably Timothy Spall in the title role, as well as Marion Bailey and Dorothy Atkinson. But it is the director’s oneness with the material itself that makes Mr. Turner feel so appropriate: a film about one artist, made by another. Nominee, Best Original Score, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, 2015 Academy Awards. Tickets: $12 (+applicable taxes and fees) Campbell River Festival of Films proudly presents Mr. Turner as a fundraiser for the Campbell River Art Gallery.

Listening Barriers There are several listening barriers, such as background noise, past experiences, prejudices etc..... that may prevent us from truly listening to what the other person has to say. Often the barriers are that of self-interest and result in focusing on the outcome of the conversation instead of listening. Now we find ourselves thinking about a response before the other person had a chance to complete the sentence. Many times our assumptions and preconceived notions we might attach to the value of a person's message act as barriers as well.
The bottom line is: When barriers become so deepseated that we are unable to pay serious attention to another person's point of view we might miss out on opportunities to learn something new. Barriers push us to deny ourselves the chance to broaden our understanding about people or issues. Start making the change today and listen with the commitment to hear exactly what the other person is saying. Seize The Day~ Gabriela Eikeland DN, CSMC, RT-CRA

exclaims, “An enemy ship is approaching us!” The captain replies calmly, the shirt for the captain. The enemy ship comes in and heavy rounds of fire are exchanged. Finally, the Spaniards win. The soldier asks, “Congrats sir, but why the red shirt?” The captain replies, “If I got injured, my blood shouldn’t be seen, as I didn’t want my men to lose hope.” Just then, another soldier runs up and says, “Sir, we just spotted another twenty enemy ships!” The captain calmly replies, “Go bring my yellow pants.”

Sepak Takraw How to get your kick on, for free!
Every week in Courtenay a strange game is taking place called Sepak Takraw. You have probably never heard of it, but it's actually a great sport for beginners. Sepak means Kick and Takraw means Ball; and could simply be described as kick volleyball. It blends volleyball, soccer and hackysack into one sport with lots of action. It has been played for many many years in South East Asia, where it has the popularity that hockey does in Canada. When the pros play they're doing backflips to spike the ball over the badminton height net. Here in the Valley you won't see any backflips but more of a focus on having fun. All ages are welcome as we currently have players ranging from 20-60 and it's a completely gender equal sport. Women may
even have a leg up, as flexible legs are a bonus. Soccer players may appreciate how much action they will get as Sepak Takraw is played with 3 players aside, and each team gets 3 hits to get the ball back over the net. Sepak Takraw is here in Courtenay, inside Puntledge Park Elementary school Wednesday nights from 8-10pm. The action never stops all year as once the weather is nice enough the group takes to the outdoor court. Throughout the year, you get a chance to play with lots of players of different skill levels which keeps the game fresh fun and it can be competitive! If you're looking to get your kick on, meet some new friends and learn a new sport come on out. There's no charge and spectators are welcome as well! Contact Phill Fuller, 250-702-6774 or captain_phill@hotmail.com.
