Note to our readers What’s going on Nanaimo!!? The VIEX is on that’s what! This year Nanaimo’s biggest and longest running fair: The Vancouver Island Exhibition (VIEX) runs August 18,19, & 20th. There are a ton of new things happening at VIEX this year…a barn load if you will. For example, you’re not going to want to miss rib-fest on the fields at Beban (now part of the fairgrounds this year). A total of 4, forty-foot, mobile rib trucks are rolling in so bring your appetite…and a bib! The McDonald’s Main stage will be in smelling distance from the rib trucks and within easy reach of the 2 beer gardens (1 adult only and 1 family zoned). You can catch all the live entertainment this year…while eating ribs and quaffing a cold one of course. The midway is back and, naturally, the rides and enough cotton candy and treats to keep the kids buzzing. I mean come on, really, it just wouldn’t be summer without those little donuts or a cup of real lemonade. So many sights, sounds, smells and fun things for the whole family to enjoy. The commercial business show is back in the arena this year (yay) along with an incredible line up at both the main stage and the Thrifty Foods Community Festival Stage. The festival has so many new and exciting acts this year there really is something for everyone. The VIEX is such a big part of Nanaimo’s history and summer experience and the staff and volunteers work so hard to bring you and your family truly memorable events and experiences. For more information on the VIEX see page 16-17 of this issue or go online at www.viex.ca. Simon Rideout, editor.

Nanaimo Homes - A Brief History
A wide variety of architectural styles grace the heritage homes of Nanaimo, and provide clues as to who lived here when and what influences they were responding to. Great longhouses were of course the first type of architectural structure built in the Nanaimo area. The Snunéymuxw, a Coast Salish people, have lived here for several thousand years, and had winter villages in the Departure Bay and Nanaimo Harbour area. Indeed, the word ‘Nanaimo’ is an anglicized version of the word ‘Snunéymuxw’. Nothing but a few pictures remain of these early buildings. The wealth of the area’s natural resources and the discovery of large coal deposits encouraged the migration of Europeans to the coast. By 1865 the population of Nanaimo was largely British and Scottish, and miner’s cottages dotted the landscape. The miner’s cottage represents Nanaimo’s dominant 19th century housing form. From the
1850s to the end of the 19th century, hundreds of similar structures were built in the area. Aside from miner’s cottages, three distinct architectural styles were popular and are well-recorded in Nanaimo’s heritage home landscape. Late 19th century designs are noted for the Victorian style, which is often a one- or two-storey house with complex rooflines, asymmetrical facades and bay windows. The Edwardian style, popular from about 1898 to 1910, is recognized for its simplicity and balance compared to the sometimes overly-complicated look of Victorian architecture. The Victorian and Edwardian Style were direct imports from Britain and eastern Canada. The third style, while rooted in Britain, was influenced by colo-

nial India and the west coast United States. The Craftsman style was noted for its rejection of the pretentious decoration of the 19th century classical and revival styles. Based on the medieval English cottage, house designs were rambling, asymmetrical formations proudly displaying supporting timbers, brick work and thatched roofing. The house designs were referred to as bungalows, a word derived from colonial India to describe a low, one-storey building surrounded by wide verandahs. The Craftsman style was popular in Nanaimo from about 1909 to 1925 when a growing middle class required housing. To see some of Nanaimo’s heritage homes and examples of these three distinct types of local architecture visit the Community Heritage Register at nanaimo.ca As a mining town, Nanaimo of course had a very large population of transient single men. Attracted by work in the mines or business opportunities, Chinese, Japanese, Croation, Finns and Italians came to settle in Nanaimo. These men found room and board at the many downtown hotels such as the Globe, the Palace, and the Queen’s, all of which stand today. Or they formed their own communities: Nanaimo is known to have had three very vibrant Chinatowns. Unfortunately, very little other than photographs remain of the wood homes that formed these communities: many were ravaged by time or fire. Want to see some of Nanaimo’s heritage homes and buildings for yourself? ‘Nanaimo Heritage Walking Tour’ brochures are available at the Tourism Nanaimo Visitor Centre and the Nanaimo Museum.

PET TIP Written by Dr. Julie Lamb Applecross Veterinary Hospital
Summer Dog The coast is beautiful during the summer months and we are drawn out to explore the vast outside world that is around our homes. We pack the kids, the dog, and everything that goes with them, and head for wherever it is the day takes us. We slap sunscreen, hats, and hiking boots on the kids before we let them race on the trails. We warn the kids what poison ivy looks like and splotch calamine lotion on them when they find it anyway. But what about Rover? Is there anything else we should be doing for him?

Dogs are generally very self-sufficient when it comes to roaming the great outdoors...after all that’s where they’re from. There are a few things that we can do to help them out during the summer. No, they don’t need hats and long sleeve shirts! But dogs that have short white fur or have had very short haircuts do need sunscreen. Use the spray kind as it gets through their fur better and isn’t as messy. Oh, and avoid spraying those sensitive faces...spray it on your hand if you need to and apply it to the head area. Dogs also can get heat stroke. Obviously, don’t leave a dog in a vehicle on a warm day, even with the windows cracked. The temperature can soar above boiling in a very short period of time. Even dogs outside that are exerting a lot of energy in the sun can suffer from heat stroke, just like us. Signs of heat stroke include heavy panting, panicked expression, dry looking tongue, rapid heart rate, dry gums, or being passed out. Avoid the whole problem by watching your guy. When out on a walk or run in the heat ensure your dog has access to plenty of water. If your thirsty...so is she. Carry a fold up bowl and fill it for our girls when the kids start asking for water. When you come across a lake or stream, encourage her to get in the water and cool down. Even if it’s just her feet. Dogs loose most of their heat through the bottoms of their feet…if you are cooling their feet, you are cooling them. Besides heat stroke and sunscreen, watch for broken glass, sharp rocks and even hot pavement that can damage her feet. Dogs can burn their feet on rocks when the weather gets hot. They don’t always present right away. But form blisters that will then crack and peel, leaving an extremely sore and abnormal looking foot pad. Dogs love being with us and they love doing things with us. Enjoy the last month of summer!

Clothing Care for your Closet Caring for your quality clothes protects them for longer life and maintains a better look. • Air out clothes by hanging them outside your closet overnight.. wrinkles fall out and odors dissipate • Let your clothes rest between wearings to regain their shape • Remove pills with a de-fuzzer or a callous remover gently over the surface of fabric works well.

Pants that Fit
• To recover stretched-out sweater cuffs, dampen them by rolling in a wet washcloths, then tumble in the dryer for a few minutes • Let deodarant and lotions dry completely before dressing… some chemicals may damage fibres in fabrics • Use emery file to smooth rough edges on the back of jewelry to prevent snagging clothes… We hear about this with necklaces often snagging a womans favourite top. • .When working on a stain remove quickly as the longer a spot sits the harder it is to remove and never press over a spot. The heat will set the stain. • Water-soluble hairspray dissolves ink on washables and rubbing alcohol on dry clean fabrics can be used.

MENOPAUSE THE MUSICAL The Off-Broadway Sensation featuring Original All-Star Canadian Cast! This original Off-Broadway musical comedy is set in a department store where four women meet by chance while shopping for a black lace bra. After noticing unmistakable similarities with one another, the all-female, all-star Canadian cast joke about their woeful hot flashes, mood swings, wrinkles, weight gain, memory loss, too much sex, not enough sex and more. These women form a sisterhood and a unique bond with the audience as they rejoice in celebrating that Menopause is not “The Silent Passage” anymore! Inspired by a hot flash and a bottle of wine, Menopause The Musical® was created as a celebration of women who find themselves at any stage of “The Change.” The laugh out loud, 90-minute production, gets audiences out of their seats and singing along to brilliant parodies from 25 classic hit songs from the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s

great way to get creative juices flowing. The common complaint, “there’s nothing to write about”, can be averted with Story Cubes and storytelling games such as Tell Tales. Story prompts provide inspiration for both written and verbal stories.
For a child soon to enter a school environment for the first time, playing school is a fun way to introduce them to the idea. This can be as simple as pretend play with a dollhouse schoolroom or as fancy as setting up a pretend classroom for friends (real and pretend) to play along. There are several pretend school sets on the market that include calendars, whiteboards and activity cards.

Your Computer Guy
Article by Steve Duckett
Windows Defender and Windows Update protect from new RANSOMWARE attack, Microsoft says NANAIMO’S OWN! A new ransomware attack is currently rocking computers in more than 70 countries around the world, but the vast majority of Windows users should be protected. A Microsoft spokesperson has confirmed that customers who have Windows Updates enabled and are running “free antivirus software” (e.g. Windows Defender) should be protected. It is imperative that your PC computer has an antivirus program running on it at all times while you are online especially with this new threat. This ransomware virus literally makes your pictures and documents unreadable and essentially useless, you don’t want to lose all those memories of family and trips. If you are not sure if you are protected come see me at Bitrate Computer Services and I’ll ensure this does not happen to you. FRI AUG 18 CONT’D 18-20. This is Nanaimo’s biggest Event of the year. 5 Unexpected Benefits of Exercise We all know that exercise and good nutrition can change our bodies by improving our cardiovascular health, build muscle and of course fat loss. For the past decade or so, scientists have sought out how exercising can boost our brain function. Regardless of age or fitness level, studies continuously show that making time for exercise provides some serious mental health benefits. Read on see what other benefits exercise and nutrition has to offer. 1. Happy Brain Chemicals. Exercise releases endorphins, which create feelings of happiness and euphoria. Studies have shown that exercise can even lift symptoms of clinically depressed. Doctors recommend that people suffering from depression or anxiety pencil in plenty of gym time. In some cases exercise can be just as effective as antidepressant pills. If you don’t necessarily feel like the gym is your scene. There are plenty of outdoor activities that can do the trick. 2. Prevent cognitive decline. I know its not the most happy thought but it is true. As we get older, our brains get a little less sharp. As aging and degenerate diseases like Alzheimer’s kill off brain cells, the brain actually shrinks, losing many important brain functions in the process. While a healthy diet and exercise won’t cure Alzheimer’s, they can help the brain against cognitive decline that begins after the age 45. Working out, especially between the ages of 25 and 45, boosts the chemicals in the brain that support and prevent degeneration of the hippocampus, an important part of the brain for memory and learning. 3. Anxiety. The Happy chemicals released during and after exercise can help people with anxiety disorders calm down. Participating in moderate to high intensity aerobic exercise can reduce anxiety sensitivity. Not only does it burn fat but it reduces anxiety! 4. Increase Brain Power. Get ready for your Nobel Prize! Various studies on mice and men have shown that cardiovascular exercise can create new brain cells (neurogenesis) and improve overall brain performance. Studies suggest that tough workout increases levels of a brain derived protein (This gene encodes a member of the nerve growth factor family of proteins. Alternative splicing results in multiple
transcript variants, at least one of which encodes a preproprotein that is proteolytically processed to generate the mature protein. Binding of this protein to its cognate receptor promotes neuronal survival in the adult brain. Expression of this gene is reduced in Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Huntington’s disease patients. This gene may play a role in the regulation of the stress response and in the biology of mood disorders. ) in the body, believed to help with decision making, higher thinking, and learning. 5. Increase Relaxation. For some, a moderate workout can be the equivalent of a sleeping pill, even for some people with insomnia. Moving around five to six hours before bedtime raises the body’s core temperature. When the body temp drops back to normal a few hours later, it signals the body that it’s time for sleep So there you have it not only does exercise affect the outside of our bodies but it has a dramatic effect on the inside!
