The goal of the Spotlight Series is to bring diverse and exceptional artists to the Port Theatre stage that audiences in our region may not otherwise experience. The 2019-20 Spotlight Series certainly does that! Here’s a look at November’s Spotlight Shows … Les Voix Humaines Consort of Viols have thrilled audiences worldwide and now the Port Theatre welcomes this amazing ensemble to Nanaimo and The Port Theatre stage November 3rd! This performance of Dowland Lachrimae will resonate with the natural acoustics of The Port Theatre as it will within you, sweeping you away to a time of beauty, sadness and descending tetrachord. This iconic work defies the 21st century concept of sound bites and tweets, slow, patient and rich in harmony, allowing us all time for contemplation and solace, The original sonnet and song that this music is set to, speak to our hearts of the pain of love lost. This beautiful program includes diverse pavans, galliards and allemands, which in our Port Theatre concert alternates with the Dowland Lachrimae. We invite you to Les Voix Humaine’s concert and share some all-too-rare moments of respite from a busy world. November’s Spotlight Series line-up has something to please everyone tastes – from Baroque to B&B. On November 6, the Arts Club Theatre Company brings their production Bed & Breakfast to the Port Theatre stage. Bed & Breakfast is a heartfelt comedy of gay life in a small town. When Brett inherits
a family estate, he and his partner, Drew, move to a quiet little tourist town to set up a B&B. But will these big city boys face friction in their new community? Bed & Breakfast is a “virtuoso dance” of dozens of hilarious characters all portrayed by two actors! *Contains mature themes and some strong language. If a smaller, intimate, cabaret style show is more your taste, we have something to please your palate too. Co-presented with the Nanaimo International Jazz Festival Association, The Port Theatre’s OFFStage Jazz Series kicks off in November with John Lee on November 5th. The cast was selected in June after several days of amazing auditions in Vancouver. “We are lucky to have so much incredible talent in BC. One of my goals with this show has always been to provide employment for some of these artists right here on Vancouver Island”, says Katy. Katy spends all year working on the creation of each new show but the cast are only together for 5 weeks. “I am excited for November 18th when the ensemble will finally be together and we can actually see our work on the stage.” It’s fast moving and colorful. It will take you on an emotional journey through a wide variety of music and dance from rock & roll to Broadway, jazz and classical, interwoven with touching readings and stories. Dazzling costumes continue to arrive from around the world, the Christmas Carpenters are busy at work readying the decorations and scene for the stage, beautiful decorations are starting to arrive for the Christmas shop which can be found in the Port Theatre lobby, the Santa’s Elves are getting ready to help and the creative team are busy brainstorming ideas for each scene of the program. The cast will take you through the eras with a variety of dance styles from tap to broadway, ballet and jazz. This year's show includes musical medleys of well known songs by Billy Joel, Gloria Estefan, Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin, a nostalgic war time set, a Broadway medley of Singin' in the Rain songs, music from Amelie, Bing Crosby's classic 'White Christmas' as well as many more classical hits and Christmas favourites. The Nanaimo Artwalk is celebrating 21 years of local art and artists, sharing their creativity with the community and you! In the early years there were only a few artists participating in the Old City Quarter and Downtown Nanaimo. This year, the Nanaimo Artwalk has 29 locations with more than 43 artists, presenting their artwork. It is a great reflection on how much artistic talent we have right here in Nanaimo! The 2019 Artwalk features many new artists and several exciting new locations. It is a great opportunity for the artists to promote their work. You will find all kinds of different artwork: original paintings, ceramics, fused glass, jewelry, basketry, fabric art, prints, photography, drawings, sculptures, etc., with different subject matter from landscapes to abstracts.
