All Decked Out Crafter Market November 15 – 16, 2013

ith a new home and a variety of talented vendors, this year’s All Decked Out Crafter Market promises to be a fun and entertaining shopping experience in Parksville. Tigh-Na-Mara Seaside Spa Resort & Conference Centre is the new home of All Decked Out, which is now being held over two days, November 15 and 16. An exclusive 19 plus ticketed evening of shopping and mingling with live musicians providing entertainment will take place on Friday, November 15. There will be grab bags handed out to the first 100 shoppers who come through the door as well as a fun photo booth. Tickets are $10 each and include a signature cocktail. A portion of ticket sales will go to charity and will also be valid for Saturday admission as well. Market organizers Megan Olsen and Trish Smith say the weekend event will not only provide an opportunity to shop for unique gifts, but will also promote creativity in the area’s youth. “We want to focus on youth art so we have chosen to support the Mosaic Youth Talent Showcase presented by Rotary Club of Parksville,” explained Olsen, who added
“$3 from every ticket sold for the Friday evening event will go directly to Mosaic scholarships.” The Mosaic Talent Showcase provides talented youth in the community a chance to perform and receive a bursary to help further their training and education in their performing art. Smith said the venue will provide a beautiful warm setting for their market which offers exclusive to high-quality, handmade crafts, repurposed art and furniture and more. They invite people to come out and enjoy a meal or beverage before strolling through the wide variety of vendors offering unique and special gifts created by a wide variety of artists. Saturday, November 16 will be a full day of browsing where shoppers will discover over 40 artisan vendors. There will also be door prize draws throughout the day. The 4th Annual All Decked Out goes from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on November 15 and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on November 16. Tickets are on sale now at Wilde and Sparrow, Soak Essentials Marketplace, Tigh-Na-Mara Pines Gift Shop and online. For more information, visit alldeckedoutmarket.com

Winterfest Christmas Craft Fair November 22 – 24, 2013
Y
ou don’t have to be Scottish to appreciate the Celtic Winterfest Craft Fair which runs November 22 to 24 at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre.
The event which celebrates arts, crafts, music and food isn’t your typical craft fair. There is a Celtic theme that will be prominent throughout the event and organizer Bobbie Garnons-Williams says it is much more than just a shopping opportunity. With live entertainment, a student art show case, Harry Haggis hunt for children, complimentary beverages and treats, talented artisans and hourly give-aways, the festival and craft fair will have something to please the entire family. On Sunday night, there will even been a Ceilidh – an informal Celtic social gathering with music and dancing. After burning some calories on the dance floor, you won’t feel guilty about indulging in some traditional Scottish fudge better known as Tablet.
Nanoose Bay and their products will be for sale. There will be Celtic bands coming from around the Island to perform throughout the festival, and with a dining area in front of the stage you can enjoy a meal and some top notch entertainment. The festival includes artisans who produce a wide range of high-quality products, from clothing and jewellery to art, clay and metal works, home decor, toys, children’s fashion and gourmet delicacies. There will be a number of activities for children throughout the weekend including a Haggis Hunt. The game has children seeking out little "Harry Haggis" stuffed creatures in and amongst vendors. Admission is $4 for the entire weekend. Your attendance will help support local artisans and a portion of the entrance fee will go to one of three local community groups.
The recipe for the delicious treat comes from Garnons-Williams’ husband Stuart Carswell. He grew up in Scotland where he trained as a pastry chef and eventually brought his family recipes to Canada.
It all takes place at the Parksville Community and Conference Center on November 22 to 24. Friday hours are from 12 to 8 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

original songs that visitors can enjoy while they mingle and chat with the artists.
Local artisans will showcase their art work at the longest running Christmas show on Vancouver Island, The Village Christmas Arts Faire.
Aguilar said with free admission, door prizes and refreshments, it will be a great event to bring the entire family to.
Celebrating 33 years of bringing together under one roof some of the finest artisans the area has to offer, The Village Christmas Arts Faire will feature stone sculptures, pottery, fibre arts, jewellery, wood, leather, and glass works created by people who are tops in their field.
“He has been working on some new music and he will be releasing it at the show.”
“We like to have treats for the public to have. Lefty’s Restaurant will be preparing soups, sandwiches and the most incredible scones ever.” In conjunction with The Old School House (TOSH), an Art Walk will take place the same weekend in Qualicum Beach.
Local potter Dee Aguilar says it will be an outstanding exhibition and sale by local professional artisans.
There will be a map with 10 studios in and around the community to visit and meet the artists.
“We are going to have an incredible show this year. I am really excited.”
The Village Christmas Arts Faire at the Qualicum Beach Community Hall on Memorial Avenue goes from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Sunday.
She said while a lot of art and craft shows have come and gone in Qualicum Beach, this event has stood the test of time. “It has been in the community hall for 33 years. This show has a core group of artists and most of them have been in the show since its inception. Every year we pull together and we jury in new artists to create something positive for Qualicum Beach.” Aguilar said classical guitarist Fred Saliani will perform an assortment of acoustic and

black friday
Deals in Downtown Parksville november 29, 2013 story by BRENDA GOUGH
L
ooking for some great deals before Christmas? A popular American postThanksgiving shopping tradition has made its way north and right into downtown Parksville. This year, the Parksville Downtown Business Association (PDBA) has decided to embrace the tradition and will hold a Black Friday shopping event on November 29. In the U.S., Black Friday is the day following American Thanksgiving and is considered to be the official start of the Christmas shopping season. It has routinely been the busiest shopping day of the year down south, and is only comparable to Boxing Day in Canada. The day also indicates the point at which retailers begin to turn a profit, or are "in the black”. Sandy Herle of Close to You Fashions in downtown Parksville said she held a Black Friday event at her store in 2012 and suggested the idea to the PDBA for this year. “We did it last year on our own and had a
great day. With a little bit of encouragement, the downtown merchants have decided to jump on board and get some deals going on that day,” she said. “I think it will be a fantastic event. Stores will be open late. There will be bargains and it will get everyone pumped up about Christmas.” Black Friday door-busters in the U.S. have seen people camping out overnight outside big box stores in order to scoop up the best deals. Black Friday in Parksville won’t be as extreme but Herle does say it will be a great way to kick off holiday shopping while supporting local merchants at the same time. She invites everyone to think about shopping locally and to visit downtown Parksville on November 29. “At least check out local merchants first to see what is available. We are your friends and your neighbours and we support the community.”
I think it will be a fantastic “event. Stores will be open late. There will be bargains and it will get everyone pumped up about Christmas.
“
~ Sandy Herle, Close To You Fashions
Also inviting everyone to think about shopping locally in downtown Parksville on Black Friday is Gurdeep Nagra, owner of Saheli Boutique. “We get a really good response from the locals who like not having to drive to Nanaimo to shop. They tell me they deliberately shop local because they want all the stores to stay here. I am hoping that with everybody coming together for Black Friday, they will see what we have to offer,” said Nagra. Nagra also says it will be a fun day of shopping in Parksville and in her store not only will there be bargains for Black Friday, but she will also be serving up goodies and her famous spiced chai tea. For a list of particpating businesses and more information about the PDBA’s Black Friday sales event: visit www.parksvilledowntown.ca or check them out at www.fb.com/parksvilledowntown

Toys for Kids November 27, 2013 “Buzz Lightyear may have been the hero in the movie Toy Story but we have our own real life heroes who generously donate gifts and volunteer their time during the Annual Toy Drive” says Paul Drummond, General Manager of Tigh-Na-Mara Seaside Spa Resort & Conference Centre. Tigh-Na-Mara is once again honoured to assist the Society of Organized Services’ (SOS) Christmas Campaign and to host the 5th Annual Toy Drive on Wednesday, November 27th. Everyone is invited to bring a new unwrapped toy or cash donation and then enjoy a free breakfast compliments of Tigh-Na-Mara. Doors open at 6am with breakfast being served at 6:30am – 10am. There is also a drive through option from 7:30am – 10am for those who are on the run but still want to donate a gift and receive a take-out breakfast. “There is a strong need for gifts for children 10-17 years of age but all gifts and donations are welcome and appreciated,” says Renate Sutherland, CEO for the SOS. “The breakfast is part of it but, it’s more about helping those in need and we are looking forward to having the whole community rallying together to help ensure every child has a gift to open this Christmas” says Drummond. The manager scowled, “Look, I don’t know what kind of place you worked at before, but I don’t call anyone by their first name. It breeds familiarity and that leads to a breakdown in authority. I refer to my employees by their last names only - Smith, Jones, Baker - that’s all. I am to be referred to only as Mr. Robertson. Now that we got that straight, what is your last name?” The new guy sighed and said, “Darling. John Darling.” “Okay, John, the next thing I want to tell you is...”

Hampers Help out in your community story by BRENDA GOUGH
f you have a little extra this year, pass it on. That is the message the Family Resource Association (FRA) would like to get out as it gears up for its Holiday Hamper program. Executive director Deborah Joyce says the need for food hampers in District 69 continues to grow. “We do food hampers every year in conjunction with other groups. Last year we did 42, up from 20 the previous year and it still wasn’t enough,” she emphasized. This year the FRA has set a goal of providing 100 hampers to needy families in the community and Joyce said they are hoping those more fortunate will help them out. “We want to let the public know we have this goal of providing hampers for families. We also want to engage the business community and other community agencies to put one or more hampers together.” Last year the FRA, St. Stephen’s and St. Mark’s Church worked together to make the hampers, which Joyce said included enough food items to last for a month.
She said they are starting the Holiday Hamper project early this year because they really want to get the community to participate. “Last year we put out the word that we needed turkey certificates and they came in two or three at a time. People would cash in their points at QF or Thrifty Foods and donate their turkey coupons. That is one way people can get involved. We need 100 turkey certificates to fill 100 hampers” The FRA has been in the community for 24 years and serves more than 1500 people a year, offering a broad range of services in a large area covering Nanoose Bay to Deep Bay and Lasqueti Island. Joyce said they provide quality professional mental health, social services, and child development services to support positive development of children, youth and families and their practitioners; who work with families to maintain confidentiality so they feel safe within the system. She pointed out that it is not always a crisis involving domestic violence that families turn to the FRA for help with.

Donation Suggestions
We want to let the public “know we have this goal of providing hampers for families.
“
~ Deborah Joyce, Executive Director
“We help the working poor who have jobs. The cost of everything has gone up so much that it is difficult for families to afford food. Employers are not hiring full time any more and even with two jobs in the family, it is very difficult to make ends meet,” explained Joyce. Anyone interested in helping out can visit the Family Resource Association’s website at www.d69fra.org where they can get a grocery list of items needed for the hampers as well as other details. The website also includes a link to make cash donations to purchase items to fill the hampers. The FRA has offices in Parksville and in Qualicum Beach. The final day to drop off items for Holiday Hampers will be December 16, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
