YOUR FITNESS NOW Simple ways to break bad habits We all have bad habits. These habits vary and may include: procrastination, biting our nails, or even snacking late at night. Let’s face it these habits are hard to break. Here are some ways that we can adjust our mindset to breaking free of the things we dislike.

1. What are the short-term rewards and the long-term consequences? Usually, we justify indulging in a habit we know is bad because we value the short-term rewards disproportionately over the long-term effects. This is because we can't see the long-term effects. The effects seem far off in the future, hard to judge, and sometimes uncertain. It's much easier to see and feel the perceived short-term “benefit.” 2. Let’s not try to conquer all the habits at once. Studies show that we have an 85% chance at successfully breaking 1 habit at a time. When trying to take on two habits we have less than 35% chance of being successful and less than 10% chance at being successful if we go for three habits. So the rule-of-thumb is to work on one habit and master that then move on to the next habit to break.

3. Lastly don’t let setbacks defeat you! Yes there will always be a bump in the road to success. When you find that a minor setback happens just brush it off and start again. Setbacks are inevitable so don’t think they won’t happen but don’t let them crush your spirit. Instead, look for solutions to prevent them from happening again. Really analyze why and how to prevent them or call us at Body Tempo for advice! PET TIP Pets and Obesity - Part 3

Written by Dr. Julie Lamb, Applecross Veterinary Hospital

This is the second to last article on obesity in pets. So far, we have looked at how to determine if your pet is overweight, and discussed how to determine what the ultimate weight of your four legged friend should be. This month we are going to look at an actual plan to decrease calories going in and increase calories being spent in the life of your pet. When we start to decrease calories, we need to make sure that we aren't decreasing them so severely that nutrition suffers. You cannot take a diet that is balanced at 2 cups a day for your dog and ask it to stay balanced when you only feed 1 cup a day. Half the calories, yes, but also half the nutrition. This is a crash diet, and they work. But the deprevation that it causes in the body will eventually lead to severe nutrient deficiency and lead to illness. They call it a crash diet for a reason. You will eventually crash. How do you avoid this? Find a diet that is balanced at a lower caloric intake. But be careful. Just because the diet says “lite”, “weight loss”, “low calorie”, or “low fat” doesn't mean it actually is. Most of the information on line and on brochures is just marketing. Ensure that the diet is actually lower in calories then what you are currently feeding, or that it provides another way to obtain weight loss. Some diets have high fiber content to encourage a pet to feel full and some high tech diets modify metabolism to help our pets burn fat rather then muscle as they loose weight. Spending more calories is also easy in theory. How do you do it? Exercise them more. But be careful. Animals that are not used to exercise are prone to injuries and have to be started slowly on the road to a healthy lifestyle. Get cats laser lights, but make sure they walk after it to begin with, and let them catch it quickly. If they start to pant or seem sore after, stop. With dogs, get them out on walks or swimming. Dogs that swim are much less likely to develop injury as those pounds come off. Remember, the mantra with pet weight loss is “slow and steady wins the race”. Start out with a couple of minutes of exercise and build it up. If

you aren't sure where to start, come to the clinic and make an appointment to review in detail where to start and how to progress. Next week we will look at the diseases related to obesity in dogs and what to do when the weight just won't come off.

The Yellowpoint Christmas Spectacular, created, produced, and directed by Katy Bowen-Roberts, is is an annual tradition in the central Vancouver Island area. This year featuring: Elton John tribute, songs from West Side Story, by the BeeGee's and CCR, highlights from The Grinch, a visit from the wooden toy soldiers, plus many classical hits and Christmas favorites. WO: What’s On is excited to attend the Christmas Spectacular this year and I'm sure you are as well. How long have you been planning for the event this year? KBR: We re-write the show every year so planning begins in February! I show my plan to James Mark, my incredibly talented Music Arranger and Violinist for the show, and he arranges the music for the 4 singers and 5-person band. WO: Do you have performers that return year after year or do you always have new talent coming in? KBR: We like to mix it up. This year we have new talent and returning cast members. We held voice and dance auditions in Vancouver in June and this year we had over 100 singers and dancers audition. WO: I know this is a passion of yours and you love it. Do you ever get a case of "nerves"? How do you cope with that? KBR: Of course! I have them on and off the stage. Every year I wonder if the audience will like the music I choose, the cast I hire, the costumes I find? I hear from many audience members that this show kicks-off their festive season!

WO: Nanaimo has many venues for budding actors, musicians, and dancers. Do you find that you are seeing homegrown talent able to move onto ever larger stages? KBR: Yes for sure! One name that comes to mind is Dana Hunter. Dana danced first, and then sang in the show and last year, she began performing in New York’s touring production of West Side Story. WO: What characteristics do you tend to look for when you are auditioning for your lead roles? KBR: We are looking for personality and charisma and for a willingness to work as part of a team. Singers and dancers need to be able to perform in a huge variety of different styles which can be a challenge. WO: How do I get tickets for the show? KBR: Call 250.754.8550 or visit www.porttheatre.com for tickets to both venues (The Cedar Community Hall and The Port Theatre). The show runs from Dec 6 – 21. Visit www.yellowpointchristmasspectacular.ca for more details. WO: Thanks again for doing this interview and I look forward to seeing you at the show! KBR: My pleasure and I want to say a huge “THANK YOU” to the communities of Vancouver Island for supporting this production. It is thanks to our audiences that we succeed.

It was the best of cars. It was the worst of cars. In grade 12 a friend of mine, Doug, drove a red 1974 Datsun B210. It had a lot of rust, was noisy in a clunky way, and smelled like it had been left in a rainstorm with the windows down and then parked in a hermetically sealed room for a week. Musty comes to mind. Doug and I also smoked cigarettes like they were going out of style which added a funky ashtray aroma to the mouldy, oily rank interior. Doug and I would hang out sometimes just smoking and talking about how unfair our parents were and how stupid school was. Other times we’d go to parties and since Doug was the only one with the car it was a good bet that we’d be driving the “210.” One thing about the car that added to its overall personality was that you were never sure if it was going to start. When it didn’t start by turning the key in the ignition we’d have to put it in neutral and push it until

it had a good roll going at which point everyone would have to jump in so Doug could pop the clutch. Ususally it took about 3 or 4 tries to get it going but we’d always get it going. We picked up girls in the 210, did car rally’s and even, although rarely, took it on the highway. I’ll never forget those days and all the good times driving that old red rust bucket. Probably as a result of those times I will never judge anyone by their vehicle no matter how rank, rusty, noisy or dirty. If anything when I see a young driver in a crumby old beater I just smile to myself and, maybe with a bit of envy, remember the good old days.

I AM A DEBTOR - JUDGE ME NOT There's a stigma associated with being a debtor – they are perceived as being irresponsible spenders who buy large screen TVS, luxurious furniture and expensive clothes, who rack up their cards until they're maxed – you've seen them I'm sure. They should pay for their excesses. right? Let me tell you about the average debtor: they're just like you! In fact given the right or, perhaps more aptly put, the wrong circumstances that debtor could be you! Most debtors have had something quite awful happen to them that has forced them down the slippery slope into the depths of DEBT. They never it saw IT coming and most would have said that they were responsible consumers until IT happened. The debtor could be a friend, a relative or a neighbour but because of the stigma of debt, you may never know. Their debt is their secret. I hear it in their voices when they call me: the fear and the shame. Their voices beg me not to judge them – they need to tell their stories. The stories are heart wrenching and desperate. I feel so fortunate that they can share their deepest secrets with me. I hear stories of cancer, job loss, accidents, failed businesses and divorce. How they had nowhere to turn so they used credit cards to make ends meet, but month after month the debt grew like a shadow sneaking up in the night. One day they realized that everything they did revolved around the debt and they were in a hole so deep that no matter how fast they dug they were never getting out. They worked to pay the debt, skimping on groceries, surviving on Kraft Dinner (it fills the tummy), neglecting their health and their assets all to service that debt. Although debtor's prison was abolished

in the early 19th Century – for the debtor their burden of debt is nothing more than a modern day debtor's prison. Simply put, debt does not discriminate. people do!

What’s On at Nanaimo Seniors Village! What’s On Digest Nanaimo spoke to Kat Theus, marketing manager at Nanaimo Seniors Village (NSV), regarding some very exciting initiatives undertaken by Retirement Concepts. These initiatives are designed to contribute to greater quality of life for the residents at the Nanaimo facility. The “Farm to Table for Healthy Aging” program is designed to enhance meals and overall health. This program also creates a significant benefit to local island (and BC) food and beverage suppliers. Another program, brought in by Retirement Concepts, is the “Fine Arts Concert Series” which will draw on research that links music with distinct health and psychological benefits. Specifically, one published study out of Sweden (Journal of Happiness Studies, V8, issue 2; 2006.) found that, for seniors, listening to music was associated with positive emotions, pleasure, and relaxation. This is just one of a myriad of studies that support the link between listening to music and health and happiness for seniors. Quality of life and the ability to enjoy daily experiences is so important for all people but particularly so when we are in a seniors community. Farm to Table The “Farm to Table for Healthy Aging” experience is coming! Under the supervision of Executive Chef Joe Bergstrom residents at Nanaimo Seniors Village (NSV) will begin enjoying meals prepared under the umbrella of “Farm to Table for Healthy

Aging.” This initiative, by Retirement Concepts, focuses on fresh, local, sustainable ingredients and products from suppliers in Nanaimo, Vancouver Island and British Columbia. Farm raised chicken, local salt and fresh water fish along with the bounty of B.C. grown vegetables and fruits will be brought to NSV for Chef Joe and his team to utilize in their dishes. The health benefits of locally procured produce, dairy, and other foods and primary ingredients are many. In addition, there is a benefit to our communities and economy when we choose to shop and invest locally. Fine Arts Concert Series The role of arts in boosting health and well-being of seniors is increasingly recognized as an important part of quality senior care. Retirement Concepts, one of the largest providers of seniors care and services in British Columbia, has taken that to heart by introducing the Retirement Concepts Concert Series: Music that is So Nice to Come Home to, across

all its’ sites in British Columbia, in partnership with Health Arts Society. A schedule of concerts will be posted on the Retirement Concepts Website at: www. retirementconcepts.com. This year in Nanaimo and through 2015 concerts will be delivered for the enjoyment of residents and communities. These concerts will undoubtedly enhance the daily lives of residents at Nanaimo Seniors Village and Retirement Concepts is proud to be able to offer such a quality musical experience. During the year-long concert series, guests will enjoy sophisticated musical performances by talented local artists alongside Retirement Concepts residents at various venues. Attendees will also have the opportunity to sample first-class cuisine from the executive chef onsite. There is little question that music has health benefits for seniors and live music only increases the spectrum of benefits. This includes the social aspects of attending a concert and even increased movement and the ongoing bonding which typically grows from shared experiences. Kat would be happy to have you in for a visit. If you are interested, please call her at 250-760-2325.

Interview with Rick O’Leary manager of Nanaimo Montana’s since 2003. 1. What do you love about Montana’s ? I love the atmosphere here it’s so comfortable just being in the restaurant. I also have to say I love when people come here to celebrate their birthday - you haven’t had a birthday until you’ve put a moose antler helmet on your head. 2. I agree, by the way, that there is a very comfortable feeling here. I’d say we are anything but pretentious - it’s almost like you’re at home and able to relax. I should also mention that we are an accessible establishment so wheelchairs strollers or walkers are not a problem for us. 3. Have you witnessed a lot of changes in the past decade? Our menu has changed over the years. One thing we’ve been focusing on is lighter fare. We have introduced a peach salad which has been very popular with those who may not be up for a rack of ribs. We do also offer smaller portions and combo platters.

An Arts Club Theatre Company Production Irreverently witty and outright uproarious, Avenue Q is the musical story of Princeton, a college graduate who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue Q – a place where Sesame Street-esque puppets rub shoulders with humans. Avenue Q is part flesh, part felt and packed with heart. Don’t miss out on this chance to see a long-running Broadway hit! Full puppet nudity and other vulgarities will induce laughter. The difference between a house and a home... is you.

A house is a building where people live that has certain basic features. A house must have a kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. These 3 rooms comprise the essential areas of the house after all everyone needs to eat, sleep and, of course, brush their teeth! Most houses have a living room for grabbing some "couch time" or watching the tube. Many have a deck of some description a laundry area and other rooms to serve various needs such as a den, a playroom and maybe a guest room. Some houses are pretty basic and others more lavish. The attitude and spirit we bring into the house becomes the culture, and therefore the essence, of the home. live in it. Whether a family, a senior on your own, a student in the basement, or a single mom (or dad) working to make a life for you and your kids you are the "home" in the house. It can be easy to forget that each of us in the house is a piece of what makes it a home. The attitude and spirit we bring into the house becomes the culture, and therefore the essence, of the home. It follows then that the home is truly what we make it. This is equally true when it comes to work life. The attitude we take into our workplace becomes how we are received by others and contributes to the feeling in the room. We've all worked with the person that comes into the office dragging a pile of emotional baggage behind them so long that you can't see the end of it. I was taught early on in my work life to ‘check the baggage at the door.’ Fortunately one person’s bad attitude does not generally become the culture of an entire

work place. On the other hand, a negative person in the home can very easily affect the culture of the home. This is especially true if one of the parents mopes around like Eyore from Winnie the Pooh or, worse, is tense or short-tempered. Home is where the heart is but also home is what we make it. When we realize that it’s actually each of us in the house that make up what we call “the home” I think it becomes easier to ensure that we do our part to make it somewhere everyone wants to be.

ASPIRE, GROW, SUCCEED.

Aspengrove School 7660 Clark Dr Lantzville, BC V0R 2H0 Tel. (250) 390-2201 www.aspengroveschool.ca

Just twelve years ago a small group of parents had a vision for their children’s education. They had learned about the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum and wanted to see their own children enjoy the benefits of this well-respected system and all it does for students. With no option available they founded Nanaimo’s only independent school offering the IB curriculum. What started small has grown. This fall Aspengrove opened its doors to over 275 students. Hundreds of schools across Canada now offer IB but fewer than a dozen are authorized to teach it in all grades. Right here in Nanaimo, Aspengrove is one of those leading schools. From a very humble beginning of only 38 students in 2003, classes are now full and parents are lining up to make Aspengrove a reality for their children. Imagine having the opportunity to start your own school. What would you want for your children? What do you see them doing each day in their classes, at recess, after school? Chances are that’s exactly what you’ll find at Aspengrove. Consider this:

After this can we go to Kool & Child?

• Beginning as early as three years of age students are in small classes, with specialist teachers, learning the same BC curriculum taught in all schools and then the IB curriculum challenges them far beyond that. • Students are prepared for university and life after graduation by learning to ask great questions, to solve problems, to be independent learners, and to work with others on challenging academic work. • A new student will join a class and have friends before recess. He will feel safe and welcome in his new school right away. He was shy but just a few weeks later will have the courage to be master of ceremonies at a school assembly. • A grade 5 student can expect to present a monthlong research project for half an hour to a group of peers and adults; in grade 12 she will present a university-quality research paper. • A grade 8 student will represent her school in triathlon, cross-country running, basketball, soccer and volleyball, and perform in the school musical. • A grade 10 student can write and perform an original play. • A grade 11 student can apply his knowledge of physics in a university setting at the physics Olympics.

• A grade 12 student will prepare for university and learn from friends who have gone before that yes, Aspengrove prepared her to succeed after graduation whatever the path she has chosen. Now, imagine your children at Aspengrove. Come and see for yourself the great things happening in the classrooms of Aspengrove School today. Call our admissions office today to arrange a visit. The

Music Spot Interview by Tina Coldwell for What's On Digest

RYAN GULDEMOND

RG: Father John Misty out of Washington as it’s very melodically charged and James Blake from London England. I think people will look back on him and think he was way ahead of his time. He seems to tap into authentic expression. From the past Frank Black (The Pixies)especially lyrically. WO: You seem to have a bit of a social conscience

LEAD SINGER OF THE HARD DRIVING in your music/videos are you trying to speak for the youth of today or for your ideas and world views? ROCK BAND MOTHER MOTHER A sold out show at the Port Theatre expresses the huge popularity of this rapidly rising band originally from Quadra Island, BC. Tina Coldwell recently conducted a phone interview for What’s On Digest Nanaimo.

RG: I’m not a political person. I believe in the way things “are” and I am not trying to refute reality. I’d rather use a metaphor like Elephant in the room to make my point…

WO: I know you started out in Quadra Island do you all still have a connection to your roots out there?

WO: Most people would agree that travelling can be an eye opening experience. Are there any places you have visited that stand out?

RG: I go back once a year of course to reconnect with my family. Of course I love the outdoors but I’m not really a nautical person I’m more a naughty person who can’t tie various knots. Im not really city/ country person I mostly live inside my head. WO: With the advent of social media changing the music business do you have a more personal connection with your fans? RG: Yes I have a more personal connection and in some ways less. A real connection is looking people in the eye. There is nothing like good old fashioned eye contact is there? Let’s face it you actually really can manufacture an identity online so it’s both more and less at the same time WO: Who musically inspires you? and why?

RG: Everywhere actually.... (*laughs) Dawson City sticks out in some ways. I had this strange experience this summer being in a world of almost perpetual daylight. It was surreal with a river running through the center of town and the constant daylight it was like being in another world. We [the band] went to a wrap up party where this guy was telling me a crazy story about how [he believed] I was a cyborg and I was soon going rip off my arm and start machine-gunning all around the room (I truly cringed at this thought). The bizarre daylight all day and night, the weird surreal energy, and this crazy story, makes for fodder you can tap into with your music. You find quirky peculiar circumstances on the road that you can tap into and nurture as a musician and song-writer.

JOKE.

So a man dies, goes to Heaven, and sees St. Peter. There are many clocks surrounding him so the man asks, “What are these clocks for?” St. Peter replies, “These are lie clocks, they tick once for every lie you tell. Here we have Mother Teresa’s clock. She has never lied so the clock has not moved. Honest Abe has only lied twice in his life, so it has only ticked twice.” The man then asks, “So where is George Bush’s clock?” St. Peter replies, “Oh, that is in Jesus’ office, he is using it as a ceiling fan!”
