Bill & Cheryl Merriman and the Mid-Isle Highlanders FC I recently had the opportunity to chat with Bill and Cheryl Merriman of the Mid-Isle Highlanders FC. We met at Tania's Restaurant in Nanaimo and talked over coffee and some breakfast. Bill and Cheryl and indeed the entire Merriman family have a strong history of being a key part of organized soccer in Nanaimo and the mid-island region. Their programs have evolved over the years. The fabled Merriman youth programs for 5 year old kids developed to extend right through age 17 and even beyond into the U21 leagues. A core strength of the Merriman / Highlanders approach is their ability to create a clear path for both players and parents. If you are looking for a program that is not only fulfilling and challenging but also offers strong direction to players who are more serious then look no further than the Mid Isle Highlanders FC. With Bill as the man on the field and as the technical director for various clubs and Cheryl ensuring the administration goes off without a hitch and things stay on track, the Merriman team is truly a soccer “tour de force” on Vancouver Island. Rideout: Bill maybe you could start by talking to me a bit about the clubs you are involved with and give me the lay of the land. Merriman: Ok here goes...I am the Technical Director for the Mid-Isle Highlanders FC Youth Academy and the U21 teams. I am the technical director for the Mid-Isle Youth Soccer club, the Vancouver Island Premier League (VIPL), and head coach of the Vancouver Island University (VIU) Mariners mens program. Myself and my wife Cheryl operate the Merriman soccer summer camps. We also offer technical skills training at a variety of levels and we include our VIU players as part of our coaching staff whom make great role models. Rideout: Plus you're a husband a father and presumably at some point you sleep. So suffice to say you keep pretty busy....and mostly with soccer related activities. Bill: (laughing) ...yes well I have soccer in my blood – it's what my father loved before passing in 2009, it's what I love and it seems to run in the family.
Rideout: What is it about soccer that motivates you and keeps you going? Merriman: It’s the players - just seeing them develop and develop a passion for the game. It’s a rewarding experience overall – once you step on the field everything else just melts away. Rideout: How long has the Merriman family been involved in soccer and how many members of the family are active in the sport. Merriman: Really all our lives whether playing or coaching. All 3 of our sons, James, Tyler & Chris played since they were youngsters and all are still very active. Rideout: I heard you won coach of the year recently that must have felt pretty good? Merriman: Yes, and it's a huge honour. I won PACWEST 2009 and 2011 plus the CCAA National Coach Title in 2011, thanks to my players performance. In 2010 we won the National championship in Edmonton – which was one of those epic games that went right down to the last second. Rideout: Very impressive...congratulations on the wins! In terms of life skills how, in your opinion, can soccer contribute to a person’s experience in other aspects of their lives? I'm thinking particularly in terms of child and youth development. Merriman: I think the social part of it is huge. The sense of belonging the players feel from being part of a team. The mental aspect is also huge. You have to learn to keep going even when things aren't going well which is a great life lesson. I often see players with that mental toughness and that mental drive surpass other players with arguably more talent. Some players that are good or skilled can become complacent. So no matter which angle you come at it from the skills you learn on the field translate to that which you need in life. Cheryl Merriman: I'd just like to add that somehow Bill has that knack to see what players need and what they need to do to fulfill their promise. They always seem to want to give Bill 100 percent and more. We continually assess and work with players to try to help them to develop to be the best they can be. “It’s what we care about and what we love to do!” Article & Interview by Simon Rideout

Five Reasons Budgets Fail Whoa! Last month I was telling everyone that budgets were the best thing since sliced bread, now I’m saying that they can fail… what’s up with that?!? So here’s the scoop! Budgets are a tool and, as with any tool, they are only as good as the operator. There are five errors people commonly make when preparing a budget that you need to be aware of so that your budget will be successful: 1. Using the wrong income. This is number one for a good reason. I see many people who don’t know how much they make in a month; some think they make more than they actually do and others don’t realize they make as much as they do. Business owners can have income that varies month to month so they don’t know what to use for their income. People mistake gross income for take home income or don’t understand that bi-weekly and monthly pay are different. But it all comes down to the same thing: if you don’t know how much you make you can’t have an accurate budget. 2. Not enough detail. You need to have very detailed categories to understand where your money is going. The more detail you have, the better clarity you get. 3. Missing items. It’s so easy to miss expenditures that you don’t pay on a regular basis and that can lead to serious shortfalls. Some good examples are water bills, kid activities, gifts, car maintenance, medical and dental costs.
It’s so easy to miss expenditures that you don’t pay on a regular basis
4. Cash spending. For some reason when people take cash from the bank they don’t record what they spend it on, the amount withdrawn is recorded but not the expenditure. This can be a problem when two people manage one account. One can be planning for a bill payment while the other makes a cash withdrawal.
5. Not having a goal. For a budget to really work, you need to have a goal, something compelling enough to keep you on track: pay down debt, buy a home, put money away for education, save a trip.
Is debt keeping you awake at night? Turn all your debts into one low monthly payment – at 0% interest. A lawyer was reading a wealthy man's will to the people mentioned in it.
JOKE.
"To my wife Claire, who stood by me through the rough times as well as the good, I leave you the house, the cars and $5 million." The lawyer continued, "To my daughter Sarah, who took care of me during my illness and kept my company going, I leave you the yacht, the business and $2 million." The lawyer concluded, "And, to my cousin Phil, who always hated me, argued with me, was envious of me, and thought I would never mention him in my will ... well, you're wrong... Hi, Phil!"

PET TIP Fleas... now you see them… now you don’t! Welcome to our series on Preventive Medicine! Our first article will be about the much loved flea. Everyone knows that fleas are a common concern with dogs and cats; however, what some people don’t know is that there are a few myths out there about them that need clarifying. Myth #1: When your pet has fleas it scratches. Not true. The only animals that scratch with fleas are those that have an allergic reaction to them. The reaction can be severe, meaning that one flea bite causes the entire body to itch, or mild, meaning that when they get a bite, it’s itchy. These are the dogs and cats that we picture with a flea infestation but dogs and cats can carry literally hundreds of fleas and not scratch at all. Myth #2: If you’ve never seen a flea, your dog doesn’t have them. Well, sorry, but also false. Fleas are actually quite hard to find, even in animals with a short hair coat. I have seen a flea “disappear” into the muzzle fur of a cat (you know, the thin stuff right on top of the nose?). I have even seen flea bite dermatitis on a Mexican Hairless dog.
Written Dr. Julie Lamb Applecross Veterinary Hospital
I keep my pets on a flea preventive year round. That brings us to the big question: How do you treat for fleas? There are a lot of products out there from shampoos to pills, so I can’t cover them all. What I can say is never give a cat anything that is meant for a dog, and never give a flea bath. When in doubt, never hesitate to call your veterinary clinic – the staff there are trained and knowledgeable about flea treatment and prevention and will be able to recommend the best product for your pet.

Myth #3: Your pet can’t have fleas because it swims or is bathed frequently. Huh. If you can handle this experiment you should try it: Find a flea on your pet and pour a small amount of water on it. What happens? Nothing. Fleas grab on to anything they can when they come in contact with water. Some of them will wash off, but not very many. So, how DO you know if your pet has fleas? Look for flea dirt. Animals with moderate to heavy infestations will have flea dirt next to their skin. The easiest way to find flea dirt is with a flea comb, a white paper towel, and water. If you find just fur, or flecks that look like dirt, wipe the entire contents into the moistened paper towel. If you see these flecks leave a red streak, or notice any red left on the paper towel at all, your pet has fleas. Mild infestations may not even leave this tiny bit of evidence, so I actually don’t wait to see fleas,

enough time to maintain a regular fitness program. Crawford, to Personal Trainer One of the biggestErin motivators getting exercise is simply to be rested, healthy and energetic – impos250-618-3443 BodyTempo.com sible without enough sleep. Science teaches that it takes a certain amount and quality of sleep to:
• Metabolize carbohydrates properly, • Maintain leptin, growth hormones, proper blood pressure and insulin resistance, • Keep a positive attitude through decreased anxiety and perceived stress. Most people fall off the exercise wagon after about three weeks. Their motivation for it crashes when they do not maintain or change to healthy sleeping habits. Without enough sleep, it becomes difficult to get motivated to go out and get proper exercise. In fact, the main excuse for not getting enough exercise is either being “too tired” or having “no time.” Often, it is the combination of both, making it extremely difficult to maintain a balanced life.

It generally takes about 7 hours of quality sleep for most people. Too few achieve that with today’s busy lifestyles. People often get the sequence backwards, working on sleep after getting going on a new exercise routine. Or worse, getting no sleep or less sleep than before. This is often because the exercise is simply added to the existing busy schedule. Here are ten ways to ensure fitness success. A large part of the process is to ensure the program will stick. • Get plenty of sleep – track your sleep. • Set realistic goals and timelines for your fitness program. • Join a clinic or group to surround yourself with motivated people. • Track you progress. • Tell everyone about your goals.

The point about 5 times per week rather than the 3 times often prescribed is important. It is really hard to form a habit at 3 times because there is often a conflict knocking out one of the days, reducing it to 2 which is useless. To build it into a habit, 5 times will work because even with 1 or 2 getting rescheduled or knocked out, there is enough there to make it work. Sometimes all 5 will work out which is fine. By building proper sleep into the fitness routine up front, more time is created overall. As the process becomes more streamlined, productivity goes up. Often, there is also less wasted downtime during the day. Someone who is rested and fit doesn’t need to head off to quiet corners or feel the need to head to a fast food joint for a break as often as others. Someone who isn’t as tired likely won’t be as hungry either. Happy Training and Sweet DREAMS Erin Crawford Personal Trainer and Lifestyle Coach Body Tempo Health and Fitness

Whats On Music
WO: So what are your thoughts about being a female in the music industry? Is it an advantage or disadvantage?
From her humble beginnings as an orphan in India, to celebrated performing artist, and breast cancer survivor, Bif Naked remains innovative and inspiring.
Bif Naked: Women can have the same "disadvantages" working in the "music industry" as any other industry. Whether a woman is a chef, a singer, a truck-driver, a doctor, or a mother... each job will always be framed around the fact that she is a "woman", first. It is an ongoing issue, and we are a resilient group of Humans. BRING IT.
Bif has produced such notable tracks as "I Love Myself Today", "Nothing Else Matters", "We Are The Lucky Ones", and "Spaceman" which made Canadian history with its #1 position on National charts, and #2 on Billboard's International Charts making it the highest-spun independent song in Canadian history. But the thing many of us don't know is the sweet candid woman behind the music as brought out in this interview with Jupiter Jill for Whats On Magazine. WO: So Bif, what's exciting in you life these day's? Bif Naked: The most exciting thing in my life always seems to be centered around the wonderful people I work with, and meet, through cancer peer-to-peer volunteering. Because I love people! Also, I am excited about describing my experiences for a memoir I am writing for Harper Collins. I am one lucky duck!
WO: You're very humble, brave, kind, have a roaring stage-presence and are quite the role model to many....for so many reasons. You've overcome so much and still rock out, help out and make the world a better place! Bif Naked: I feel pretty humbled when anyone says I am a "role model", and do not feel worthy of this. I am ever a Student of Life, like we all are, making mistakes and trying to do better. WO: (I love that too) So you are playing a show at The Port Theatre Oct 4th, are you happy to be coming back to Vancouver Island? Bif Naked: I love to come to Vancouver Island and have been playing concerts on The Island for twenty years! I love everywhere I have been on Vancouver Island. WO: So where are you living and what are you doing now Bif? Bif Naked: I am still in North Africa. I experienced some major heartache in this past summer. First my sixteen year old dog passed away, then I went through a divorce, so I was emotionally exhausted. I am a better writer because of these experiences but it's still hard sometimes. I am thankful for everything I have learned through all of the grief. It changed and strengthened me. WO: You are one pretty incredible lady Bif, thanks for this interview. On behalf of all our readers I will say "See you at the Port my dear, dancing in front of our seats"!
Tickets still Available for the October 4th Performance at The Port Theatre. Charge by phone at 250-754-8550 or buy online at www.porttheatre.com. Doors 7:00PM - Show 7:30PM.

Get Away to Hawaii! At this time of the year in Nanaimo thoughts turn to the darker days ahead. For that reason I thought I'd put an article about Hawai'i which is my favorite place on the planet. If you can't get there right away you can always head to Solisa for your Hawai'i tan! If you are planning a trip – read on! The most popular – and populated - island in Hawai’i is Oahu. It lays claim to the capital of the state, Honolulu, and one of the most famous beaches in the world, Waikiki. The “Big Island”, as the island of Hawai’i is endearingly known, is larger than the rest of the islands in the state put together. It boasts the world’s longest continuously erupting volcano, an historic fishing village, beautiful waterfalls and a sunny beach resort. Interestingly, it also has twelve distinct climate zones so visitors can take their pick of tropical rainforest, frozen tundra, desert or all manner in between. The small, rural island of Kauai is a laid-back paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Hiking, swimming, snorkeling and surfing are a few of the most popular ways to take in the scenery. Maui, the second largest island in the Hawaiian chain, is home to endless beaches and is a popular spot for whale watching. With each island in Hawai’i boasting its own natural beauty and storied past, the hardest work for any visitor might be deciding where to start. Tourists take heart: whichever island you choose will have the same floral air, warm, tranquil waters and

Advantage: Local Service With 2 kids in school, and soccer, and dance and with both of us working my wife and I each have a car we use to get around Nanaimo on a daily basis. In fact at this moment we are a *gasp 3 car family!! We are actually selling our minivan so, thankfully, we will be soon back to just 2 (let me know if you need a good minivan!) What I find is I get a great deal of service from my local car guys! Whether I'm getting my tires checked or replaced locally or in need of a full tune up there are many local repair shops in Nanaimo and there are some distinct advantages to taking your car to a local service center or garage on a regular basis. One advantage is very often convenience. It's nice to be able to drop your vehicle off at a neighborhood shop and take the opportunity to go for a walk or jog. Lower costs or faster turn-around time can be another advantage. Smaller shops often have lower operational costs meaning they can be very
Lower costs or faster turn-around time can be another advantage. competitive on price especially if they know you are on a tight budget. When you have a local mechanic or service center there is also a higher likelihood you will have your car serviced more regularly. This can actually help to avoid larger expenses that can arise if you neglect the little things. The best part of the local service center is the trust and confidence that you develop with the mechanic. Now that we are in October the shops start to get busier so if you get in there now and beat the rush you can have a worry free fall driving season.

Walking your dog is great exercise for you and your best friend. Let's face it - sometimes we get lazy and we eat too much and don't exercise. If so then shame on us right? But your dog is relying on you to take him for a walk! He doesn't want to get fat! So if you want to make it easier to get the needed exercise in try an off leash park...your pooch will love you for it and be happier and healthier in the long run! Nanaimo Dog Off-Leash Walking Areas! • Beban Park (entrance off Labieux Road) • Cable Bay Trail (R.O.W. Nicola Road) • Westwood Lake - designated area is located at the back of the park by the power lines only • Colliery Dam Park - upper dam trail only • Beaufort Park - grassy portion accessed off the Chelsea Road parking & tennis area
• Diver Lake Park - the field will be offleash between October 1 & April 30. During the summer this area will be utilized as a sports field. • St. George Ravine Park • Inveremere Beach Park • Forested land adjacent to May Richards Bennett Pioneer Park • Wardropper Park • Gallow's Point (Protection Island) • Northfield Park (Parkway rest stop behind Visitor Info Kiosk) For More information check out the City of Nanaimo Website or call 250-756-5200.

My name is Simon Rideout and this is Simon Rideout my "non-ranting" column called "Simon Says". I am the publisher and editor of Whats On Magazine Nanaimo. "Whats On" comes out on the 1st of the month and is a small, handy and fun way to learn about things that are important to most people such as what's going on in the community and tips for your finances, health, home and more. OK so back to me: I was born in Edmonton, grew up as a hybrid White Rock/Vancouver boy, and am proud to have called Nanaimo home for the past 11 years. I am married and have 2 very active boys that keep my wife and I very busy and who continually make us proud. There's more to know about but time is short and space is limited! As CEO of Rideout Communications Inc (rideoutcommunications.com), you could say I have just a few things that I need to be doing during the course of any given day. In general you might also say I probably don't have a ton of spare time to, for example, start my own column within my publication as an additional thing to do given the very limited free time I have. So it was pretty funny when, while I was having a cup o Java with Margot Holmes from the Vancouver Island Symphony at my favorite commercial drive coffee spot, that she suggested "you have the perfect name to do a column called "Simon Says". I mean it is true that my name is Simon after all and I do seem to have a platform to say things so...why not. Plus when you don't do what Simon says I get to kick you out! So, really as my first order of business..."Simon Says pick up and Whats On Digest every month!" Oh ya also read that other publication over there on the counter! Oops...Caught ya! I didn't say "Simon Says!!!" Seriously though, Simon says I hope you will use
