Qualicum Beach Downtown

TrickorTr october 31, 2013 story by BRENDA GOUGH

he most spooktacular day of the year is almost here and for those who prefer a safe and friendly environment to bring their children trick-or-treating in during daylight hours, Downtown Qualicum Beach will be the place to be. The Qualicum Beach Downtown Business Association (QBDBA) is hosting it’s first ever Downtown Trick-or-Treat event on Thursday, October 31 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Participating merchants in the downtown core will be handing out candy and treats to children 12 years of age and younger, who must be accompanied by an adult to participate in this free and fun community event. Kids in costume are encouraged to visit participating businesses, which will be identified on Halloween Day with an ‘Official Monster Merchant’ sign in their window and orange and black balloons outside their front doors. Anthony Cummings of the QBDBA events committee said their members decided to create the new event because there seemed to be a lack of Halloween activities for families with younger children in the community.

For some younger children, being outside at night time can be a little too scary. Our event is during the day and is very kid-friendly”, Cummings said. Besides handing out candy, some businesses owners in the downtown core will also be decorating their store fronts and dressing up in costumes. Other free activities during the Downtown Trick-or-Treat event include edible Halloween crafts at the Courtyard Cafe & Patio, Halloween cookie decorating at Cafe Brie and free Halloween photos for kids in-costume at Qualicum Beach Pharmasave. There will also be spooky storytelling and kid-friendly crafts at the Qualicum Beach branch of the Vancouver Island Regional Library at 3:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

“Most of the Halloween events in the area are for older kids and happen in the evening.

Halloween

pumpkin walk or those who prefer their Jack-o’lanterns with more of an edge, a visit to the Halloween Pumpkin Trail in Errington is guaranteed to put some fright into your night. Hosted by the Errington War Memorial Hall Society, this event starts at 6:30 p.m. on October 31 at the Community Park beside the hall. When parents bring their trick or treaters to the Community Park, they can walk the gauntlet past the spooks hidden along the dark trails. It is an eerie journey where carved pumpkins are hidden amongst the creaking trees and rustling bushes but worth walking the gauntlet of spooks who hand out candy. Be prepared for some blood curdling screams and a great fireworks display around 8 p.m. If anyone is too skittish, you can by-pass the trail and head directly to the market site, where you can get a hot chocolate from the coffee shop, warm up by the bonfire, and watch a fireworks display. Admission is by donation. Volunteers and donations of cash or candy are always needed and can be dropped off at the Errington post office.

For more information: Errington Halloween Pumpkin Trail, 250-248-5106 or call 250 ewmhinfo@gmail.com

EVENTS NEW RDN YOUTH EVENTS WEBSITE story by BRENDA GOUGH

his is an area well known for it’s large senior citizen population, but Parksville and Qualicum Beach are also home to many young people and the Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) is excited to announce the official launch of the new youth specific website www.rdnyouth.ca. The creation of the website is in response to a goal from the Regional District of Nanaimo’s Youth Recreation Strategic Plan (YRSP), to communicate with youth in a way that is youth friendly. This document can be found on www.rdnyouth.ca and includes an action plan for youth programming for 2011-2016. Kelly Valade, Youth Recreation Programmer for the RDN, says “The website is intended to share information from various sources and to be a resource for youth and youth workers in this community. Our hope is that it will be the place to go to find out information about what’s happening in our community for youth.” A group of Youth Recreation Advisors representing both Secondary Schools and the three Middle Schools in School District No.

69 were instrumental in shaping the website. Valade says they deserve a lot of credit for pulling it all together. “The website was designed by Geeks on the Beach with input from six Youth Recreation Advisors, Jamie Mackenzie, Connor Pickard, Shayla Deleau, AJ Simons, Rebecca Leonzio, and Gabi Courtorielle made recommendations and provided feedback during each step of the design process from the layout, to the colour choices, to the new youth specific logo, to the way it is responsive on a mobile device. The background photo was even taken by 2012-2013 YRA Connor Pickard.” Valade adds, “We asked youth what features were important to them and we consulted youth workers and community stakeholders through discussions at YouthLink meetings, then we connected Geeks on the Beach with the Youth Recreation Advisors and from there things just came together.” The site has been up and running since April but Valade said it will be officially launched this month. She said they wanted members of YouthLink to have a look at before it was formally

artist, and a description of the submission. It is a very exciting new project.”

“It is rewarding being a part of this process. It is an impressive project and I think the final product is reflective of a true collaboration with youth.”

She said, “It is not just our website. We see this as a community asset. We want it to be the “what’s up” resource for youth and youth workers in the community.”

She said one of the features on the website is a Google map of locations in Oceanside that offer things for youth to do. “It is a quick and easy way to locate programs for youth.”

Geeks on the Beach built the website but it is maintained by Valade along with the help of the Youth Recreation Advisor team.

Valade said the youth community directory will increase significantly as more information comes in. “The youth community directory has the potential to become a great asset with links to other organization’s websites, emails and phone numbers.” She said there are some amazing young artists in the area and through the RDN’s new youth art project called Youth Art in RDN Recreation Facilities their art work can be posted on www.rdnyouth.ca as well as in Ravensong Aquatic Centre and Oceanside Place Arena. Applications for submission are available on www.rdnyouth.ca. “Once we get the artwork in, you will be able to see youth art and a blurb about the

Valade said what is unique about the website is that she will be able to update it and make changes without having to go through a lengthy process. “It was designed to be accessible, youth-friendly, and sustainable.” The funds to create and support this website were approved within the YRSP which can be found on the website.

Vancouver Island Opera

HANSEL october 5–6, 2013 story by BRENDA GOUGH

ansel and Gretel is an enduring fairy tale that is both haunting and charming and the Vancouver Island Opera (VIO) will be presenting the opera version at Knox United Church in Parksville on October 5 and 6. Hansel and Gretel is an opera composed by nineteenth-century composer Engelbert Humperdinck, who was born in Germany in 1854. In the 1890s, his sister, Adelheid Wette, had written a libretto based on the Grimm fairy tale, and asked her brother to set it to music as Christmas entertainment for her children. Later the pair decided to turn their modest family project into a full-scale opera and Hansel and Gretel was an instant hit and remains an everlasting masterpiece. VIO founder and former member of Canadian Opera Company Tatiana Vasilieva says she chose Hansel and Gretel for her tenth full length feature production because she wants to appeal to a wider audience. “The opera will be in English so children can understand the action. The children will be enthralled with the fairy tale theme and adults will be delighted to see and hear the classic fairy tale come to life,” she assured. Vasilieva said with the principal and several supporting roles sung by young and upcoming operatic talent, the audience will be assured of a rich production. Complimenting the leads will be an abundance of local talent according to Vasilieva, who said the excellent chorus will support

the production with their considerable talent and energy.

“In our cast we also have about 14 children and 14 women to sing with them and reinforce the chorus.”

Previous productions by the VIO have included Faust, L’Elisir d’Amore, Die Fledermaus, Madama Butterfly, La Boheme, Carmen, La Traviata and The Barber of Seville. Past performances took place at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre but this year Vasilieva has changed venues and will present both an evening and afternoon performance at Knox United Church. The former opera diva said she has always preferred the church venue because of its amazing acoustics but it is not big enough for an orchestra. This year, budget restrictions have forced Vasilieva to forgo a live orchestra and present the opera with a piano accompaniment. “We don’t have an orchestra this year because we can’t afford it, so my son Nikolai Maloff will support the cast … he plays so well he sounds like an orchestra so I am not worried about that.”

Vasilieva admitted that her shoestring budget created some challenges for the production but she was fortunate to get a lot of help from people in the community. She said the set was painted by volunteers, headed up by Micheline Messner. “She found volunteers and paint and co-

GRETEL ordinated the work bees. I was lucky to have her. Even her grandson AJ Messner helped out and I would like to attract more young people who can help out behind the scenes”. This is important because we need to leave a legacy for our younger generation. If we don’t, they will not know anything about this art form,” she observed. Vasilieva admitted that when she founded the VIO in 2000 she had no idea it would still be going 13 years later and as long as she has the energy, she will continue to bring opera to the community. Performances of Hansel and Gretel are on Saturday, October 5 at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, October 6 at 2:30 p.m. Advance tickets for adults are $20.00 and $22.00 at the door. Children 12 years and under pay $10.00 Tickets are at: Cranky Dog Music in Parksville and Chocolates Plus in Qualicum Beach.

A linguistics professor was lecturing to his English class one day. “In English,” he said, “A double negative forms a positive. In some languages, though, such as Russian, a double negative is still a negative. However, there is no language wherein a double positive can form a negative.” A voice from the back of the room piped up, “Yeah, right.”
