COMMUNITY THEATRE 1974 - 2014
story by BRENDA GOUGH

cho Players is commemorating a major achievement ‌ 40 years of presenting live theatre in Qualicum Beach. The 2014-15 season will mark the anniversary of Echo Players’ purchase of the Village Theatre. Since 1974, the little theatre has been like a magnet attracting talented volunteers with a wealth of experience in stage craft. offering up productions uniquely and carefully crafted for the community, echo Players seasons continue to move audiences to laughter and tears. Presenting performances for 40 year, the theatre company has never limited themselves to one genre, a single aesthetic, or attempted to play to any particular demographic. The eclectic company tries to appeal to the broadest segment of the community always stretching their artistic boundaries. It is run by a non-profit society and has many gifted people from front of the house volunteers to behind-the-scenes crew

members and technicians, artists, and craftspeople. Eileen Butts, who is a life time member of the Echo Players, is one of those dedicated members in the community and has been wearing many different hats with the troupe since 1976. She said many of the original members joined Echo Players when the Village Theatre - which was once a movie house was being used as a warehouse. Some avid community theatre enthusiasts had a vision to turn the spot into their own permanent performance space. With the help of Russel Bergstrom the owner of the building and the dedication of Paddy McGarrigle, Doug Klassen, Joy McKay, Jean and BJ Christian, Eileen and John Pope and others, a theatre acquisition committee was struck and the rest is history. The mortgage document which hangs on the wall in the Village Theatre was signed by Paddy McGarrigle and Doug Klassen in the autumn of 1974. Butts said the fact that they are marking 40 years is impressive because it took a great

The 40th anniversary season offers a distinctive Echo Players blend of the classic and the contemporary; the new, the familiar, the edgy, and the comfortable. leap of faith by many people to acquire their own place. “In the early years it was touch and go but everyone was committed to being involved. The club didn’t always have the finances and various members along the way helped to pay the mortgage. When you undertake an adventure with gung-ho, that wave carries you through.” She said when they reached the 25 year mark it was satisfying and 40 years feels even better but they could not have achieved success without the support of the Town of Qualicum Beach, local businesses and enthusiastic theatre supporters in the community. “We are still here and getting better every day,” she acknowledged.

cho Players is opening their season with one of the most brilliantly effective spine-chillers you will ever encounter. The Woman in Black is a gripping theatrical exploration of terror that has been frightening audiences for over a quarter of a century. This fall, the ghost takes up residence in Qualicum Beach at the Village Theatre. Easily the most successful and undoubtedly scariest plays ever produced, The Woman in Black is sure to have your heartbeat racing and your hair standing on end. Adapted by Stephen Mallatratt from Susan Hill's creepy novella, the Echo Players’ version is being directed by Sue Murguly and will run from October 16 through November 2. With its unique blend of suspense, drama and bold stagecraft, the play within a play that needs just two speaking actors and a vision is considered a masterpiece. Murguly said she directed the same spooky play many years ago in Prince George and she can’t wait to bring the psychological thriller to theatre goers here. “I have done this play before but this one is far more sophisticated. Its chilling and
PQBWhatsOn-Oct14-p-0.indd 14
it will send goose bumps. People will pay attention. Once the lights go off they will be totally engaged,” she assured. Murguly admitted it is a very challenging play but it is so well written that it is wonderful to work on, especially with two fantastic actors. “It gets everybody’s creative juices going… both sound and lighting as well as the actors all have a huge part to play in bringing this ghostly story into a real experience in the theatre. Appearing by permission of Canadian Actors’ Equity Association are Garry Davey and Mort Paul as Kipps. What of the woman in black herself being performed by Diane LeBlanc? As title roles go, it is certainly one of the strangest because there are no lines. Set in an old theatre, the play unfolds around the conversations of just two characters. The elderly Arthur Kipps brings a ghost story to an actor; it's the story of something that happened to Kipps 30 years earlier, and the actor turns it into a drama. The older actor in the drama (the real Kipps) plays a half-dozen characters, while the other actor takes on the role of the

n BlacK younger Kipps who is a solicitor. He has been summoned to attend the funeral of Mrs Alice Drablow, the house’s sole inhabitant located in the remote town of Crythin Gifford. He is unaware of the tragic secrets which lie hidden in the mysterious house in the marshes and it is not until he glimpses a wasted young woman dressed in all black at the funeral that a creeping sense of unease begins to take hold. This feeling is deepened by the reluctance of the locals to talk of the woman in black – and her terrible purpose. Murguly explained that from the beginning of the show the characters start appearing in unusual places, leaving the audience constantly feeling that something could creep up on them. She said the characters, the setting, costuming, lighting and sound all conspire to send the audience's imagination into overdrive. one of the rarest things in live theatre is to achieve a genuine scare. But that is just what is accomplished in the deliciously eerie the Woman in Black, on stage at the village theatre from october 16 through november 2.

PUMPKINS on the drive
october 28 - 31, 2014 story by BRENDA GOUGH
P
repare to be excited, amazed and spooked this Halloween season when the Resort Drive community carves out an endless jack-o-lantern display for their 3rd annual Pumpkins on the Drive. There will be more than 400 silly, happy, and scary pumpkins on display along Resort Drive starting October 28. You can walk, stroll, or drive to see some of the most interesting jack(o(lanterns the island has to offer until october 31. The pumpkins will be illuminated from 6 to 8 p.m. each night. After taking it all in you can stop in at any resort office to vote for your favourite pumpkin patch and receive a treat. A Parksville Business Pumpkin Challenge, with local businesses all competing for bragging rights as the best pumpkin carvers in town, is sure to inspire some creative entries.
PQBWhatsOn-Oct14-p-0.indd 22
You can expect the standards you see every year, including scary witches, cats with arched backs, creepy skeletons, Dracula and his fangs dripping with blood, spiders in webs, and wolves howling at the moon. But every Halloween the collection changes and the artistic creations never fail to delight. Luba Plotnikoff, marketing and media relations manager at Tigh-Na-Mara, said staff members at the resort look forward to outdoing each other every year for pumpkin carving bragging rights. “We order 200 pumpkins and we have an internal contest. Everyone tries to be creative and some are more talented than others. It is neat to see what they come up with,” she said. She agreed the Pumpkins on the Drive seems to get more impressive every year and the event is a great way to engage the community. “We want people to bring their families

to Resort Drive. It is a safe location with sidewalks on both sides. It is ideal for strollers and a great way to enjoy some good old fashioned fun.” She said starting at 5:30 p.m. they begin the job of lighting up all of the pumpkins and by 6 p.m. hundreds of glowing jack-olanterns illuminate the entire drive. People are encouraged to check all of them out and then vote for the display they like the best. “Each resort office has a box and people are given ballots so they can vote for their favourite,” she explained. Most resorts will also be handing out treats and hot chocolate during the four-day pumpkin festival. Don’t be disappointed like Charlie Brown’s friend Linus was, waiting for the Great Pumpkin to arrive in the pumpkin patch. This pumpkin patch will be lit-up on the nights of October 28 to October 31 from 6 to 8 p.m.
