FIRE& ICE

STREET FESTIVAL may 3, 2014 story by BRENDA GOUGH

R

eally cool talent, hot food and musical entertainment will return to the streets of Qualicum Beach May 3 for the 2014 Fire & Ice Street Festival.

Visitors will be still be able to sample all sorts of chilli, but this year there will be even more hot food options from local restaurants.

For more than 20 years the festival has brought thousands of people to the Town of Qualicum Beach to sample chilli and marvel at ice carvers chiselling into blocks of ice and transforming them into amazing sculptures.

“We have increased opportunities for the people who are coming out to try some other things like hot wings, meatballs, pizza and other spicy foods,” he said.

The festival was cancelled last year due to a lack of volunteers and other forms of support for the event but this year it is back with some new culinary undertakings and all of the activities that made it so popular. Fire and Ice Festival Society chair Walter Hoogland says in addition to the traditional chilli tasting, other kinds of hot food will also be available.

Hoogland explained that in the past some of the town’s eateries that don’t offer chilli on their menus didn’t participate and by allowing them to serve something else, the culinary side of the event will be more dynamic. “The chilli contest with teams is still happening but we have more flexibility. We want to get more restaurants to participate in the culinary event and we want to keep it a family event.” Efforts have also been made to make the festival more environmentally-friendly and the Styrofoam cups of the past will no longer be used. “We want to keep it sustainable in terms of our waste management. We are more cognizant of our environmental responsibility and will be using

fb.com/whatsonpqb 9

He also said there will be no more messy chilli cups to walk around with.

The event will also reintroduce a theme concept to inspire costumes and ice carving and this year’s theme will be Pirates of Qualicum Beach.

“This year people won’t have to carry around a little cup. They will be given a wrist band which will allow them to have any of the food available.”

Hoogland said the one-year break allowed the group to restructure, retrench and come up with a festival that will make the whole community proud.

He said the chilli contest will be adjudicated by judges but the people’s choice will be for all of the foods that are served.

The organizing committee consulted extensively with local businesses, community organizations and participants providing more choices and options for both area businesses and visitors to participate in the day's activities.

compostable cups and utensils,” Hoogland pointed out.

A wrist band purchase of $4 will allow visitors to go from team to team sampling the food and voting for their favourite. The exciting ice carving will also return, with additional frozen activities such as ice cream making. On the entertainment side, local musicians will continue to be highlighted but Hoogland said there will also be a Juno award winning folk singer as the headliner. “Valdy is coming and will perform a concert on main stage. We will also have other bands and individual performers from our local area who we want to support.”

The fun-filled day takes place on Saturday May 3 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. This is an outdoor event so please remember to dress for the weather.

KEEP CALM & BOWL ON april 18 & 19, 2014 story by BRENDA GOUGH

T

hrilling and exciting. You don’t often hear those words when talking about lawn bowling but according to those who play, the game is all that and more. You can learn all about the game involving bowls at the Parksville Lawn Bowling Club’s annual open house April 18 & 19. Carol Bucyk who handles publicity for the club says a lot of people think the game is like bocce or five pin bowling on grass … but its not. She said you really have to try the game to see how different it is from the other sports. “If people played the game they would get a sense of how much fun it is. It is a bit like curling,” she explained.

Bucyk said the jack is a bit like a button in curling and the person who has rolled their bowl closest to the jack scores a point. “The bowl is weighted so it doesn’t roll straight and doesn’t roll true. It has an in turn and out turn just like a curling rock. So when you are aiming for that target you have to take in your line, your length, and you have to have some memory and you have to account for the fact that you have a bowl with weight in it and it is going to track in a certain way,” she explained. She said the fun part is when you hit that jack, move it and all of a sudden you have a new game. “What is nice about the game is that it has strategy … it is a bit like chess.”

Bucyk is inviting the public out to their two day open house this month so they can see for themselves that it is an exciting strategic game.

The green is located at 149 East Stanford Avenue in Parksville and is open from the beginning of May until the end of September.

“A lot of people think it is a game just for seniors and doesn’t involve skill … but it can be a really strategy filled game. It’s cutthroat,” she exclaimed.

Currently there are about 190 regular members who play in the club which has open draws every day, except Monday, evening leagues as well as club and interclub tournaments.

The object of the game is to roll weighted bowls toward a small white ball called a jack located at the other end of the green.

Bowling etiquette is a fundamental part of the game and Bucyk said while it is

competitive, good sportsmanship and good manners are not optional. “We shake hands before and after and you congratulate your opponent when they make a good shot.” Bucyk said it is not expensive to join and it is a great way to make friends. There is a first year $100 initiation fee and dues are $170 per year. There are club bowls for new members to use in the first year and determine what size works best for them. Once you are hooked you buy your own set of bowls which cost about $350 brand new and less for used. For those who visit the club on April 18 or 19 during the open house from 1-4 p.m. you will be introduced to the game. If you like it you can sign up for lessons from April 22 to 26 for a $40 fee and be ready for a fun season of lawn bowling.

JOKE A lawyer defending a man accused of burglary tried this creative defense: “My client merely inserted his arm into the window and removed a few trifling articles. His arm is nothimself, and I fail to see how you can punish the whole individual for an offense committed by his limb.” “Well put,” the judge replied. “Using your logic, I sentence the defendant’s arm to one year’s imprisonment. He can accompany it or not, as he chooses.” The defendant smiled. With his lawyer’s assistance he detached his artificiallimb, laid it on the bench, and walked out.

SPRING

HIRING FAIR april 30, 2014 story by BRENDA GOUGH

T

he Career Centre in Parksville is hosting a Spring Hiring Fair April 30 to unite job seekers and employers in Oceanside under one roof.

“It gives them the opportunity to ask some questions and look into something that they might not have considered before,” said Koop.

The event at the Parksville Community & Conference Centre (PCCC) will include up to 40 employers in a variety of sectors.

In order to be successful Jolly agreed it is important to be ready and that is why they are also offering two free workshops at the Career Centre prior to the hiring fair.

The Career Centre provides a wide range of work and career related services and the hiring fair is just one initiative that delivers positive results to all who attend. Operations Manager Lori Koop and Employer Services Coordinator Diana Jolly said in 2013 there were 34 booths at the fair and it was very successful for both employers and those looking for work. “Last year we saw a lot of people leave that were really excited because they had interviews set up for the following week. It was rewarding for them because they saw immediate results. Where else can you go and drop off your resume and know you are having an interview immediately,” Koop explained. The fair not only provides an opportunity for job seekers to connect with employers, it also provides exposure to businesses that may not be on the radar of people looking for work.

“The workshops are open to anyone. You don’t have to be unemployed to attend,” said Jolly. She said people who have registered for the workshops being held on April 24 and 28 from 1 to 4 p.m. will learn about what they need to prepare before, during and after the hiring fair “Our goal is to make sure that both the employer and the job seekers are going to get some benefit out of it. We hope both sides make a connection,” said Jolly. Some positive match-ups have occurred for one of the area’s largest employers as a result of past hiring fairs. Tigh-Na-Mara Seaside Spa Resort employs as many as 240 people and their Director of Human Resources Laurie Sagle said every hiring fair they have participated in has been excellent. “Sometimes we get people who haven’t

fb.com/whatsonpqb 25

even thought of going into hospitality. We bring a manager or a team member. It helps because people can talk to the team members directly,” she said. Sagle acknowledge that many people in the community don’t realize that TighNa-Mara has such a large work force and offers a lot of employment opportunities. “We have over 70 positions at the resort.” Aside from reservations, housekeeping and food and beverage positions, they have jobs in accounting, marketing, recreation, maintenance and more. She agreed that different personalities are required for each position and the hiring fair is a great way to determine where a person will work the best. “We look for a friendly smile and a great attitude and at a hiring fair you get to assess people as they walk up to you and you get a sense right away of their personality. If they are really outgoing you can tell they would be great in the restaurant or the front desk. If they are timid and shy you know that position won’t work. It really helps with the selection process.” She said they also endeavour to book future appointments that day so potential employees leave with immediate results.

"We look for a friendly smile and a great attitude and at a hiring fair you get to assess people as they walk up to you..." ~ Laurie Sagle, Director of Human Resources, Tigh-Na-Mara- Resort
