Model Railroading as Art Model Train provided by Maker Space Modelers of Parksville.

Story by Brenda Gough

W

hen it comes to model trains, most people consider it more of a hobby than an art form but that misconception is about to be debunked at the Winter in Art Show at The Old School House Arts Centre (TOSH) this month. Art galleries rarely include model railroading layouts even though talented modelers use an array of art mediums to create believable scenery and trains with authentic details. TOSH executive director Illana Hester said she is excited to bring this artistic medium to their gallery and she is confident kids and those who are young at heart will appreciate it. Since Hester took over the operations of TOSH in the spring, she has been working on ways to involve more youth and bring an inter-generational aspect to the gallery. TOSH has teamed up with the folks at MakerSpace in Parksville and from December 10 to 14 the public is invited to check out two model train instalments and run the controls of the exhibit from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. “People don’t think of model train installments as traditional art work but the MakerSpace modelers of Parksville do. They use scene composition and colour strategy to make this model railway a work of art. They have two modules and kids will get to run the controls and move the trains and interact with the model setup,” she explained. The modules comprise an old saw mill

and mine shaft designed by Malcolm West who facilitates the weekly model railroad workshops at Oceanside Community MakerSpace in the basement of the McMillan Arts Centre in Parksville. The community work space has tools, resources and experienced inter-generational co-members who offer support to hobbyists, crafts-people, artists, engineers, mechanics, scientists, teachers, students who have an interest in being creative. West has been a fan of model trains since he was a boy when according to him “Many children in the 50’s and 60’s got a Lionel train set under the tree for Christmas.” In his retirement he began creating more elaborate scale railroads and shares his passion with fellow modelers in the community. West said there are two ways to look at his modules. “They can be seen as a stand alone piece of art and as an interactive piece of art. I am trying to evoke an emotion with them so people looking at them will feel certain feelings and moods … just like a sculpture or a painting that you enjoy looking at,” he explained. West said he used photos of actual railway scenes to capture the mood of real railroad operations so don’t expect a shiny and new train set. “I try to get as realistic a scene as possible. These are scale models of an actual prototype

9

…copies of a real engine. There is a switcher, ore cars, flat cars, box cars and caboose. I weathered them to make them realistic,” he described. West emphasized that painting realistic trains is quite an involved process that requires paying attention to the use of color. “It takes a week to do just one engine. I teach techniques on use of color to simulate rust and dirt because nothing is clean in railroad world.” He is pleased that his artistic statement will be on display in an art gallery that has seen the works of many famous artists. His work will also be featured in the prestigious Model Railroader magazine in January issue called Model Railroad Planning 2020. “It is a big thing to be featured in magazine's. The magazine only accepts 10 or 12 articles and we made it into the 25th anniversary issue,” he exclaimed. If you want to bring empty cars to a mine shaft and lumber mill and pick up loaded cars be sure to visit the interactive display at 122 Fern road West in Qualicum Beach December 10 - 14.

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever Witness the mayhem and fun as a couple struggles to put on a church Christmas pageant. Story by Brenda Gough

he story of a typical played-out Christmas pageant turned on its ear opens December 12 and runs until December 29 at the Village Theatre in Qualicum Beach. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever brings theatre goers of all ages behind the scenes to witness the mayhem and fun as a couple struggles to put on a church Christmas pageant. Adapted from the best-selling children's book by Barbara Robinson the delightful comedy directed by Ashlee Sales promises to take audiences on a heartwarming journey with classic Christmas carols and lots of laughs. A holiday favorite The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is centered on casting the Herdman kids…some of the most inventively awful kids in history. The usual director of the pageant is sidelined by a broken leg and won't be able to take charge of this year's show. She calls for backup and naive mom Grace

T

Bradley agrees to take on the responsibility. The inexperienced Pageant Director becomes the center of controversy when her son Charlie accidentally encourages the local hooligans, the Herdmans, to come to church and take part in the pageant. The good Christians are aghast at the doors being opened to the rough, dirty and uncouth family. The premise of the story is a recipe for a perfect holiday stage treat and Sales said she jumped at the opportunity to direct it. “I read the book as a child and it was one of my favourite stories so when I was asked to direct this play I was like of course, I love that story and I love the characters.” She said although the play is funny there is a deeper message and it is the director’s job to look for that and she hopes the production will not only entertain audiences but also educate them about making assumptions judging people. “I love that it is a transformative story. It really makes us look at our judgments…what

17

we think we know about people and what we actually can discover when we are given the opportunity to shine,” she emphasized. She assured that all ages will enjoy humor in the show. “There is something for everyone. Kids love it because it is fun to read about bad kids and the goodie-two-shoe kids. I think everyone can relate to those memories from childhood.” Sales has been performing since she was five years old and she admitted that her first memories on stage were not perfect and that is why she is passionate about inspiring her youth led show. “The reason I love working with kids is when I was five years old I was in dance and I had terrible stage fright. The first time I ever got on stage I went into the wings and did my dance where no one could see me. My love of the arts helped me work through my fear because the love was bigger than the fear,” she acknowledged. She said the cast includes 21 kids and while

it is a big job for them, they are energetic, focused and enthusiastic and she has pushed them to go big. “It was really fun to cast this show because all the characters are caricatures and they are larger than life and exaggerated. I have to encourage them to step out and be a little tougher. It is ok to be rude and mean. You are just acting.” For tickets contact the Box Office (250-7523522) or e-mail info@echoplayers.ca. Ricky's All Day Grill 4,200 square-foot upscale casual restaurant and bar.

Story by Brenda Gough

T

he latest addition to one of Canada’s most popular familystyle restaurant chains, Ricky’s All Day Grill, opened in Parksville in October and judging by the record breaking guest visits in the first three days, the eatery has what it takes to make diners feel at home. Ricky’s is a family restaurant run by a family and while it took more than two years to come to fruition, the owners couldn’t be more thrilled with how much the Oceanside community has embraced it. Owned and operated by Ken and Jackie Aarbo with their daughter Rayelle acting as the general manager the stylish 4,200 square-foot upscale casual restaurant and bar is located in the south end of town next to the Arbutus Grove Motel. As proprietors of the motel since 2003, the Aarbo family was always interested in adding a restaurant since as Ken stated “motels and restaurants go together like bread and butter.” Jackie said not only are their customers

impressed with the food and the menu selections, they also love the west coast inspired design of the interior which includes a colour scheme of teal blue and green. “The beachy colours make you think of sand, water and seaweed. People love it. They are always commenting on the beautiful colour and design,” Jackie exclaimed. The nautical inspired décor that Jackie and Ken spent many hours designing includes a massive metal octopus hanging above the bar created by local metal artist David Kasprick. “We bought it from Red Cod Forge at the museum farmers market a year before we even opened. We liked it and thought it would look good in the restaurant,” explained Jackie. She said the restaurants open concept layout with booths all around and windows allows people to enjoy the outdoors while dining inside. The building comfortably seats up to 130 and has a back room with multi-media equipment that can be booked for private

parties and meetings. Not only has Ricky’s been a natural fit for the Aarbo family it has also been one for the Parksville community with the focus on family. “We have the treasure chest for kids to pick their own toy. They get a place mat to colour and play a game on it. Kids get a bowl of ice cream with their meal and a kit to make their own sundae treat with sprinkles and caramel and chocolate sauce … they love that,” Jackie agreed. Ricky’s is also a proud supporter of the Breakfast Club of Canada. For every Breakfast Sandwich they sell, Ricky’s donates $1.00 to the Breakfast Club of Canada’s Start Me Up Campaign. One in five children is at risk of going to school on an empty stomach. Of the more than 5 million Canadian kids attending school, over 1 million may be doing so without the proper nourishment required to give them an equal chance at academic success. Jackie said that giving back to the

community is important to them and when they tested out their menu items with friends and family before opening to the public, all tips were donated to their charity with more than 18 hundred dollars raised for the Breakfast Club of Canada. The Aarbos not only employ approximately 35 staff, they also employ local contractors. And while they have been overwhelmed with the initial success, they have still found time to plan a free community event for Canada Day 2020 that will see them cook breakfast outside in the restaurant in parking lot and serve up their famous pancakes. Ricky’s is located at 1480 Huntley Road Parksville. Call 250-905-0323 or email: parksville@rickysr.com for more information.
