Weekend Come swirl, sip and swish what you’ve been missing! by Brenda Gough

Y

ou don’t have to be a sommelier to order wine with confidence but if you want to enhance your understanding of wine and sip with some sophistication, be sure to check out Parksville Uncorked. This annual wine and culinary festival hosted by The Beach Club Resort and Tigh-Na-Mara Seaside Spa Resort in Parksville begins on Thursday February 21st and continues until Sunday February 24th, 2013. Now in its fifth year, Parksville Uncorked has firmly established itself as one of Vancouver Island’s signature events, helping to showcase and celebrate some of the finest food, wine and beer that British Columbia has to offer. Activities during the festival include educational seminars, featured winemakers’ dinners, tastings, tours and bubbly libations. Organizers of Parksville Uncorked are preparing to ascend last year’s success, which saw several sold-out events. ➤ ➤ ➤

S

one of Vancouver Island’s signature events The festival starts on February 21st at TighNa-Mara Resort with Parksville Untapped, a showcase of regional breweries featuring a wide variety of beers paired with delicious regional cuisine. Tigh-Na-Mara’s Marketing Manager Krystal Adams explained that the event is not your typical beer garden. “It is a little more upscale. We cater to craft beer and try to integrate local and craft beer together. You get your own beer glass and can wander around and taste as many as you like.” On February 22nd, The Beach Club Resort plays host to Swirl, a signature Parksville Uncorked event where guests can sample more than 40 different BC wines while savouring gourmet food. The brain child of Shawna Broekhuizen, General Manager of The Beach Club Resort, Uncorked was created to give a boost to the local hospitality industry and also provide an opportunity for those who love fabulous wine accompanied by great food to gather and sample some of the best wines that BC has to offer. A special Winemaker’s Dinner on February 23rd at The Beach Club Resort will feature the world-class wines of Burrowing Owl paired with a unique seven-course menu created by Executive Chef Rick Davidson. Broekhuizen predicted the dinner will once again sell-out quickly because many of the wines served from the award-winning winery can not be purchased by the general public and only a select few restaurants carry their products, including Burrowing Owl’s Coruja, a fortified port-style wine that’s great for dessert. A different Winemaker’s Dinner will also take

place on February 23rd at Parksville’s Tigh-NaMara Seaside Spa Resort. Executive Chef Eric Edwards will pair various wines from Road 13 Vineyards with five courses of delectable cuisine. Road 13 continually receives ongoing critical acclaim and Krystal Adams of Tigh-NaMara agreed that their vintages impress. “We are excited to have them back because the last time they were here, it was sensational,” Adams noted. Each year, Parksville Uncorked has grown in size and 2013 is no exception, with the addition of three new tours on February 24th. There will be a guided tour and lunch at the Deep Bay Marine Field Station, golfing at Morningstar Golf Course with a tour of Little Qualicum Cheeseworks and Moo Berry Winery, and an epicurean tour of some of Vancouver Island’s wineries. Broekhuizen said they added the new items to the itinerary to meet the demands of tourists to the area.“We felt we needed something more to do on the Sunday. People wanted more options and now they will stay longer.” The festivities will wrap up at Tigh-NaMara Resort on Sunday February 24th, with a luxurious brunch featuring a variety of BC’s finest sparkling wine and gourmet brunch courses. at Qualicum Beach Civic Centre by Brenda Gough

Students of the Kwalikum Secondary School (KSS) jazz program will once again prove why they continue to win awards when they perform at their annual benefit concert for the program on Friday, March 1st at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre. Presented by the KSS Fine Arts Society, the concert is undoubtedly the biggest local jazz event of the year, with proceeds benefiting all students of the KSS Music Program. Talented students from the junior and senior bands, as well as the vocal jazz group, will provide part of the entertainment for the evening and distinguished trombonist Ian McDougall will also be in the house to perform swing music with the Arrowsmith Big Band. Dave Stewart who heads up the school’s music department said they are fortunate to have McDougall. “He is a phenomenal musician. He is one of the top trombone players in the world,” Stewart exclaimed. For those who are not familiar with the trombonist, he is best known for his work with Rob McConnell's Grammy and Juno Award-winning The Boss Brass where he was Photo provided by: Andy Telfer, KSS Music Program

"He is a phenomenal musician. He is one of the top trombone players in the world" ~ Dave Stewart, head of KSS music program

lead trombone and soloist for 20 years. The musician was also a founding member, soloist, lead trombone, and arranger for the Brass Connection. During the musical night, a three-course gourmet meal with a swing theme created by chef and musician Trevor Hooper will be served. Hooper is one of the proprietors of the Raven Stone Farm in Dashwood and each year he has been offering his culinary talents for the benefit concert. Also the former chef-owner of an award winning Vancouver restaurant and cookbook author, he now produces artisan sausages at the charcuterie located on the 8.5-hectare farm. Hooper

said he created a menu that celebrates the birthplaces of swing; New York and Kansas City. Guests will dine on Manhattan clam chowder; BBQ pulled pork, Pit beans, coleslaw and mashed potato salad and for dessert sink their sweet tooth into Bourbon bread pudding. For those not familiar with Pit beans, they are simmered in or on the smoker, grill, or pit and are a southern barbecue must-have. Hooper said although the inspiration for the menu is from abroad, he is striving to keep the ingredients local. Ravenstone raises purebred registered Large Black, Berkshire and Landrace

hogs using ethical and sustainable methods and he said the pulled pork will not only come from their pigs, but that it will be specially prepared for the event. “We have our own smokehouse so the pulled pork will be tender and just fall apart, he assured. Hooper’s children went through the KSS music program and being a sax player himself, he believes it is important to support musical education. Tickets for KSS Jazz Extravaganza benefit concert and dinner are $50 each, or $25 for the concert only. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. with dinner served at 6 p.m. and the concert beginning at 7 p.m.

H.M.S. PINAFORE A ROMANTIC MUSICAL COMEDY BY ECHO PLAYERS

We want to spread the love and joy and I think it is going to be a fantastic showcase for the season ~ SUE MURGULY, PRODUCER, ECHO PLAYERS

by Brenda Gough

I

t is the most romantic day of the year and on February 14, love will no doubt be in the air at the Village theatre in Qualicum Beach when Echo Players opens its production of HMS Pinafore, one of the most beloved comic operettas Gilbert and Sullivan created. The blockbuster loved for its dynamite songs, gleefully entertaining story and saucy satire will run until March 3rd and producer Sue Murguly said because it is so romantic, it is the perfect time of year to put on the production. “It was planned to open on Valentine’s Day. We want to spread the love and joy and I think it is going to be a fantastic showcase for the season,” Murguly exclaimed. The fourth collaboration between Gilbert and Sullivan, HMS Pinafore was their first blockbuster hit, opening in 1878 in London, England where it became a huge fad. Full of sea shanties and petticoats the light operetta concerns a British naval ship anchored at Portsmouth commanded by Captain Corcoran.

whatsondigest.com 27

Able seaman Ralph Rackstraw has committed the grave error of falling desperately in love with the captain's daughter, a young lady high above him. Unforgettable characters populate the romantic satire of the British social class system and naval hierarchy and hilarity and silliness ensue. Murguly said the songs are stunning and the costumes will be spectacular in the nautical romp.“We are pulling out all the stops on this one.” She admitted constructing the elaborate set is a huge job but the designer Phil Copple is a veteran and always creates a masterpiece. “It is tricky to get a ship on stage. You would like to have the scale of it but at the same time the space is limited especially when you have to consider dancing and actors on stage,” she explained. She also agreed they are lucky to have such an incredible cast including Paul Churchill as the pompous naval commander Sir Joseph Porter. Brian Lecky plays HMS Pinafore Captain Corcoran who is proud of the fact that he “hardly ever” gets seasick. Nicholas Atkinson portrays Ralph Rackstraw, an able seaman who is secretly in love with Josephine. Alistair McVey takes on the character of Dick Deadeye, a fellow crew member who tries to sabotage Ralph’s happiness. Belle Warner plays Josephine who is being sought in marriage by Sir Joseph but secretly loves Ralph. Skye Donald has the role of Mrs. Cripps also known as Little Buttercup, a Portsmouth bumboat woman who has designs on Captain Corcoran. There is also a chorus of 10 sailors and eight cousins, sisters, and aunts. If you’re looking for a way to celebrate cupid, then this production should leave you feeling love struck, rather than sea-sick especially on opening night when a special gift will be given to all of the ladies in the audience by the cast.

WIN a resort stay: Celebrate the romantic spirit of this musical with a prize consisting of a one-night stay at The Beach Club Resort in Parksville. To enter contestants must write about their most memorable Valentine’s Day in 75 words or less. The prose can be dropped off at Village Theatre box office, 110 West Second Ave until February 14 or mailed to Echo Players at P.O. Box 281, Qualicum Beach, BC, V9K 1S8.
