sleep is a huge part of it if they want to train and recover. Usain Bolt trains with the celliant technology in the Ironman bed.” The Jamaican sprinter is one of the many world class athletes benefiting from restorative sleep and in fact Nagra’s customer base includes quite a few extreme athletes. 70 year old Mike Bourcier who is a coach and fitness trainer in Parksville loves the benefits of celliant technology. The athlete who competes in all the trail running competitions on Vancouver Island and has many medals to his name is an M&N Mattress Shop customer. “I have 11 friends in Oceanside who bought beds there. They are all athletes. I bought one and I send quite a few clients there,” he claimed. He said athletes prepare because they train but they might not recover well and the bed is 80 percent of recovery. “Your bed will make the difference. I believe that if people have better recovery they will be better athletes,” he assured. His advice for those thinking of making some positive health changes this year? “Avoid the word resolution. Get a goal but a short term goal. Never more than a month and adjust the goal after that. If you succeed your next goal will be bigger. If you had a bit of a problem you stay with it. Your brain doesn’t like failure. You need to set up something that will be successful.”

“Some of those eight people that were here in the beginning are still here. People recognize the faces. They are the same people when they come through the door. Yes we have gotten more faces but there are a lot of the originals around. That helps because when you make a connection with people and it is about your health it is important that you trust the people that are giving you the advice.” She is also passionate about sharing her expertise in the pharmacy field with students. “It is rewarding when you can mentor young people in a profession you love. In fact Lonny Barr who joined me as a partner at the end of June and is now one of the owners was a pharmacy student here 10 years ago. He did his fourth year clinical rotation here and then ended up coming back a couple of years later to work here and has been here ever since. It is really neat when you can bring people through and make them realize your vision and your passion.” Toriglia said they offer a wide variety of services and they want to be that community resource and that pharmacy that really cares about their customers. “I have always believed that there is more to a pharmacy than just counting pills. We want to do all the extra services. We want
people to sit down for an hour if they have to and go through their medications.” Toriglia and her team have many reasons to be proud of their accomplishments. They have won Store of the Year four times beating out other Pharmasaves in BC in the health centre category. Toriglia said she feels blessed to have achieved that status in 2010, 2012, 2016 and 2017. “The Pharmasave store of the Year award is pretty special. It takes a whole team to get that award.” She said being part and giving back to the community is important to her and the business. “We are blessed to work in this community and blessed to have the incredible business that we have.” For the anniversary customers can expect great deals, specials and give-ways on January 15. Noel Coward’s hilarious classic, Hay Fever, opens at the Village Theatre on February 15 for a three week run. Judith Bliss has “retired” from the London stage and moved to the country with her husband, a well-known novelist, and their two grown children. Unbeknownst to each other, they have all invited a guest for the weekend hoping for some kind of delicious mischief. Their hapless guests have no idea what lies in store for them. Hay Fever opened in London in 1925 and is one of Coward’s most produced and best loved plays. The production is helmed by professional director, Michael Armstrong, and stars an all-star cast of actors from Nanaimo to Courtenay. MORE INFORMATION

ROBBIE BURNS DAY PART OF SCOTTISH CULTURE FOR ABOUT 200 YEARS.
T
he birthday of Scotland’s most celebrated poet Robbie Burns takes place January 25 and to mark the special day there will be Robbie Burns suppers held throughout Oceanside this month. The celebratory dinners have been part of Scottish culture for about 200 years as a means of commemorating Scotland’s best loved bard and for the Scottish at heart it is a highly anticipated event. The Royal Canadian Legion branches of Parksville and Qualicum Beach each host their annual tributes to the Scottish lyricist this month. A big-time Burns night calls for a piper because all of the legion events follow traditional customs including the piping in of the haggis. The haggis is a pudding made from sheep’s offal, beef suet and lightly toasted oatmeal.

When Burns immortalized haggis in verse he created a tradition that is maintained to this day by millions of people throughout the world.
Now 24 years old he admitted there is no Scottish lineage in his ancestry so it wasn’t something he was exposed to while growing up.
For those not familiar with the custom, guests are asked to stand to receive the haggis. A piper then leads the chef, carrying the haggis to the top table, while the guests accompany them with a slow handclap.
He said his interest was peaked when he saw the band performing at the Nanoose Teddy Bear Picnic and he has been playing the pipes ever since.
“I was lucky enough to learn when I was A special guest then recites Burns’ famous eight. I decided on my own. The band which currently has around 15 members has been performing in the communities of Oceanside for more than 42 years. Band members range in age from 10 to 70 plus, and come from all walks of life and you don’t have to be Scottish to be a member
“It is hard to get people. Younger people don’t know enough about it and don’t know where to go to get lessons. There is no school to go to. If people are interested we will provide lessons for them but it requires lots of practice and you have to have time for it,” he explained.
Pipe Major Josh Dieleman first became interested in the pipes at the age of eight.
He said there are a lot of things that go into playing the bagpipes.
“You have to have good lungs, be in shape and have good breathing.” He said most people start out with a practice chanter and learn fingering and notes. “You only have to read nine notes but it is definitely a must to read music. You don’t get onto bagpipes for about a year,” he pointed out. With a full schedule of events planned for 2018 the band looks forward to continuing to contribute to the community spirit and pride of Parksville and Oceanside. Dieleman said although he has never tasted it, he will be piping in the haggis for Parksville’s Legion Branch 49 Robbie Burns Day dinner on Sunday, January 20. Tickets for the annual dinner are $25 and can be purchased at the legion bar. The event which sells out fast will boast an evening of entertainment by the Arrowsmith Pipe Band and The Clanns as well as a roast beef dinner beginning at 5 p.m. The Qualicum Beach Pipe Band will be front and centre when the Qualicum Beach Legion Branch 76 hosts their 28th annual Robbie Burns dinner and dance on Saturday, January 27. Spokesperson Lynne McLean said it is their most popular event of the year and it sells out fast.
Organizers pull out all the stops for everything Scottish at the dressy affair where guests are encouraged to sport their tartans. For those who don’t like haggis, don’t worry, they’ve got you covered... haggis is a side dish. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with the Gathering of the Clans; Scottish Dancers at 6:00 p.m. and at 6:30 p.m. they will pipe in the haggis with dinner to follow. The Qualicum Beach Pipe Band will perform and there will be dancing to music by Bruce Feltham. The Qualicum Beach Pipe Band was formed in early 2014 from a nucleus of a handful of musicians whose main purpose is to provide pipe band music in support of Royal Canadian Legion, Qualicum Beach Branch’s activities. A secondary role is to support various Oceanside community events. Over the past four years, the band has grown to a complement of 27 pipers and drummers comprised of very accomplished and experienced performers. Tickets for the Qualicum branch dinner are $33 with a limit of four tickets per member. Sales start January 7 at 1:00 p.m. at the Legion on a first come, first serve by number draw.

Joke of the Month A friend hosted a dinner party for people from work and everyone was encouraged to bring their children. All during the sit-down dinner one co-worker’s three-year-old girl stared at the man sitting across from her. The girl could hardly eat her food from staring. The man checked his tie, felt his face for food, patted his hair in place, but nothing stopped her from staring at him. He tried his best to just ignore her but finally it was too much for him. He asked her, “Excuse me little girl, but why do you keep staring at me?” Everyone at the table had noticed her behaviour, and the table went quiet for her response. The little girl said, “I just want to see how you drink like a fish.”
