Find a spring break camp or activity for the young ones while they’re out of school. by Brenda Gough
S
pring break for students in School District 69 goes from March 16th to April 2nd and for working parents that can be a long stretch of time.
“It’s a great opportunity for youth to try things they may not otherwise have access to. They hop in a van and go on wonderful trips everyday with a qualified leader.”
If the thought of entertaining your children for two weeks while class is not in session seems daunting, don’t worry! There are plenty of things for kids of all ages to do in Parksville and Qualicum Beach.
She said not only is it a way for kids to make new friends, it is also an affordable way to try new things.
The Regional District of Nanaimo’s youth recreation programmer Kelly Valade said they are offering a wide range of programs that are fun and affordable. A new program this year is XploreSportZ Camp for kids 7 to 12 years old. Kids will get to try out a variety of sports in a fun and relaxed environment under the direction of qualified community coaches. Activities may include lacrosse, kayaking, basketball, wheelchair rugby, tennis, bounce ball, European handball, baseball, yoga, track and field, swimming, volleyball, wrestling, Taekwondo, football, soccer, judo, floor hockey and more. Another program Valade is excited about and had fun putting together is the Express Camp for kids 11 to 14 years old.
One of the outings planned is titled the Amazing Race and just like the TV show, kids will spend a day doing challenges. “There will be different stops where we set up challenges and team building activities. They may have to find a geo cache with a GPS. We will have rules so they have to work together,” she described. For youth who are interested in working towards their lifeguarding certificate, Valade said they are offering the Junior Lifeguard Water Camp for ages 8 to 10 and Bronze Star Water Camp for ages 10-13. “For the last two years we have run it in the summer and this is the first time we are running it at spring break.” There will be public swims and skates offered at the Ravensong Aquatic Centre and Oceanside Place Arena and people are encouraged to check www.rdn.bc.ca/

recreation for up to date schedules for Spring Break. For kids who are into discovering nature, there is a five-day camp for ages 6 to 12 at the Rathtrevor Beach Nature House. Now in its fifth year, the Brant Wildlife Festival Spring Break Nature & Adventure Camp has become one of the highlights of the season, where children have the opportunity to experience a jam-packed week of activities with park naturalists. The camp is known for variety and every day is different from the previous one. Special guests are brought to share their expertise in the natural world to increase the breadth of the programming and in the past have included activities at the North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre, programs like Learn to Fish and artists. The camp runs March 18th to March 22nd rain or shine. Registration forms are available on-line by visiting www.brantfestival.bc.ca and clicking on the conservation tab.

BRANT IN THE BAY View Brant geese and other birds during the 2013 Brant Wildlife Festival by Brenda Gough
T
here are over 10,000 species of birds in the world and the Oceanside area is among one of the best places to view many of them. But you don’t have to be a professional birder to appreciate the fine-feathered friends that live in these parts. There are several bird watching opportunities during the 2013 Brant Wildlife Festival and members of the Arrowsmith Naturalists will bring birding knowledge and viewing scopes to Parksville Community Park on Saturday, March 23 for a public event called “Brant in the Bay”. Long time member Sandy Gray has been participating in the event for many years at various locations and she agreed that Parksville Bay always provides top notch bird watching opportunities, especially during the herring spawn.
“It is one of the 10 best birding spots in the area. You can see the deep water birds up and down the Georgia Strait and the shore birds are usually there as well,” she exclaimed. Gray also pointed out that there are other spots in the park with great bird viewing areas including the estuary, where you can see a wide variety of species that are in abundance there. She says that although the festival celebrates the little black Brant geese, this area is home to many divers and dabblers and the annual bird spectacle is guaranteed to be exciting. “The weather can be dramatic and adds another element. It can be a real colourful spectacle with eagles diving. I have met people who come from all over and make special trips here to check it out.” Gray said there will be spotting scopes
whatsondigest.com 15
with high powered lenses set up on tripods for the public to view the birds from and members of the Arrowsmith Naturalists will be on hand to help people identify the species. She said while the group’s members are not all ornithologists, many of them are avid birders and have been actively observing and studying the birds in their habitat for years. She said they even have a field guide specifically for the mid-island area that helps people know what to look for. The guide has a seasonal checklist and can be purchased during the free event, which goes from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Saturday March 23. The guide book is also available year round at various locations including Cha Ch’a Java in Parksville and Dolly’s Home Hardware in Qualicum Beach.
New this year for Brant in the Bay will be the addition of some of the area’s best food vending trucks. Parksville City Councilor Carrie PowellDavidson, who is a member of the Brant Festival planning committee, said they are always looking for ways to build out the festival and bringing in the mobile food vendors seemed like a good fit for Brant in the Bay. She pointed out that it can be cold and blustery on the waterfront and the food trucks will be able to provide hot snacks for those who work up an appetite bird watching. For more information about Brant in the Bay or other events during the 2013 Brant Wildlife Festival, visit www.brantfestival.bc.ca or contact Robin Rivers at 1-866-288-7878 or by email to rrivers@nauretrust.bc.ca

Get ready for a hoppin’ good time! EGG HUNT AT EASTER FESTIVAL AT FOSTER PARK
by Brenda Gough
E
xpect to see a lot of chocolatesmeared faces on March 30 as hundreds of Easter egg hunters gather at Parksville’s Foster Park to fill their baskets with sweet treats. If you’re not egg-cited yet, you should be because the Easter Bunny and his gang of volunteers will be hiding thousands of chocolates throughout Foster Park for an annual event that draws hundreds of children of all ages to the neighbourhood. Organized by the Friends of Foster Park, this year’s Easter egg hunt is set for Saturday, March 30. Volunteers will hide the eggs for 12:00 noon and it’s expected they will be scooped up by around 1:30 p.m. Janessa Vega, President of Friends of Foster Park, said they usually start the hunt around noon but there are ongoing activities throughout the day including face painting, clowns, a jelly bean count and raffles.

She said that in addition to the 6,000 chocolate eggs that they will be spreading throughout the park, there would also be hot dogs, juice and coffee available. Vega, who teaches kindergarten at Winchelsea Elementary School, pointed out that the event has become very popular and in the past, hundreds of people turn out for it. But she assured it is very well organized, with four different areas taped off for different age groups. “This event has a real community feel and is for ages 0 to 99.” While the event itself is free, there will be concession items that can be purchased and all the money raised through the sale of snacks and the raffles will go back into the park. Over the years Friends of Foster Park has purchased picnic tables, benches, playground equipment and other items for the public property and Vega agreed the community spirit that surrounds the green space is something she has witnessed first hand.
“I grew up in the neighbourhood and as a child I enjoyed the activities Friends of Foster Park put on. My mom and my aunt were the two who started the group in 1995. As soon as I was old enough I became part of it and it is really neat for it to come full circle,” she related. Of course it takes many volunteers to put on such a big event and Vega said they have the alumni from the Parksville Newcomers group to thank for that. “We couldn’t do it without them. They are the manpower behind it. We do the background stuff and wonderful volunteers come out and help that day,” she acknowledged. She also pointed out that Peter Zimmerman of Re/ Max First Realty generously sponsors the event and both Save-On-Foods as well as Quality Foods in Parksville are also contributors. Foster Park is located at the corner of Pym Street and Sanderson Road in Parksville. For more information about this event, contact Janessa Vega by phone at 250-240-5591.
