Finders Keepers The hunt is on for hidden beach treasures by Brenda Gough

It’s always fun when you find a unique rock or shell while strolling along the beach but its even more exciting when you happen upon colourful beach glass! From now until September, beachcombers may discover some hidden treasures on Oceanside’s beautiful beaches. Finders Keepers was pioneered by local business woman Karena DonnellyLawrence, owner of Smashin’ Glass & Anything Art Co. in Parksville.

This will be the third year that Karena and her husband Kevin will be hiding the fused glass treasures they created throughout the beaches of Qualicum Beach, Parksville and Nanoose Bay. ››

About 1,000 brightly colored fused art-glass stones have been created and once a week some of them will be distributed at Qualicum

"We have had so many people who find them, phone in and say thank you so much..." ~ Karena Donnelly-Lawrence, owner of Smashin’ Glass & Anything Art Co.

Beach, Parksville Bay, Craig Bay, Wall Beach and Brickyard Beach. Each one-of-a-kind piece of fused glass is about the size of a small sand dollar but more durable if stepped on.

They will be imprinted with a number so that a record can be kept of where they were found and according to Karena, they could be anywhere. “We try to be creative where we hide them … they could be in little nooks and crannies, or little divots in rocks or in tide pools,” she hinted. Along with the oval cabochons, some handmade glass starfish will be hidden once a month at the various locations. The life-sized glass sea stars will be orange and purple … the same colour as Vancouver Island starfish, and will be placed in starfish habitat. Karena indicated that people can expect to

find the glass renditions in shallow tide pools or beside barnacle covered rocks. “We try to hide them in and amongst where starfish can be found. We wait until the tide goes down but I have to go out there in disguise so people don’t recognize me because I have had people following me a few times,” she admitted. Karena came up with Finder Keepers as a way to give back to the community that she was raised in and now operates a thriving business in. She said the feedback she has received about her fun and free event has been positive. “We have had so many people who find them, phone in and say thank you so much because

all my kids are out on the beach and off their computers and it gave us a great family thing to do. It gives me a good feeling and it is the whole point of why I did it in the first place,” she exclaimed. The glass treasures are not hidden around any dangerous terrain and after finding one of the pieces, the finder can register it by calling 250-248-6624 or by coming in to be entered into a monthly prize draw. If beachcombers don’t find any of the treasures, they can always take a glass class to make their own at the Smashin’ Glass & Anything Art Co. gallery on Craig Street in downtown Parksville.

FARMERS MARKET OPENS IN MAY

Vendors at the Errington Farmers Market are gearing up for their season opening May 4 and because it will be the 40th anniversary of the market there will be some a celebration opening day including a May-Queen, Maypole dancing and singing and flowered headbands for the ladies. From May until the end of September, the market is the place to go every Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for everything from plants, produce and preserves to unique arts and crafts from local artisans. With the motto “Make It, Bake It or Grow It!” the market strives to offer an authentic farmers’ market experience that delivers local agricultural produce, baked goods, prepared foods, arts, crafts and more … all in a wooded environment with live musical performances on an outdoor community stage. With a new musical act every week featuring some great local talent the market atmosphere is laid back and friendly and you can even bring your dog as long as it is leashed. Coffee is always on at the market café and while you enjoy the sweet sound of music you can feast on the market’s famous cinnamon sticky buns or dig into a savoury black bean burrito.

For those looking to purchase something unique, they’ll find local artisans all accomplished in their field offering work in many mediums including jewellery, pottery, textiles and photography.

The Errington Farmers Market was established in 1973 by the late Gerry Shaw with the help of her father, Fred Kaufer, husband Terry and sons Mark and Stan. Originally located across the road from the Errington General Store, the market became a popular Saturday morning destination for area residents. When Shaw passed away in 1988 a non-profit society was formed to carry the market forward. In 1992, the property was sold and the market found a new home at the Community Park next to Errington Hall. With the cooperation of the Hall Association, largely donated materials, and much volunteer labour, stalls, picnic tables and a small coffee shop were constructed and the market reopened in its new location in July, 1993. Last year the market opened the long anticipated washroom which has handicap accessibility. For tourists and the locals visiting the market continues to be a great way to spend a Saturday morning. The market is located just past Grafton Road beside the Errington Hall.

A strong young man at the construction site was bragging that he could outdo anyone in a feat of strength. He made a special case of making fun of Morris, one of the older workmen. After several minutes, Morris had enough. "Why don't you put your money where your mouth is?" he said. "I will bet a week's wages that I can haul something in a wheelbarrow over to that building that you won't be able to wheel back." "You're on, old man," the braggart replied. "It's a bet! Let's see what you've got." Morris reached out and grabbed the wheelbarrow by the handles, then, nodding to the young man, he said, "All right. Get in."

all out LOCAL SHOPPING EVENT IN NANOOSE BAY by Brenda Gough

Mother’s Day is on May 12th this year but you may also want to mark Saturday May 11th on your calendar for the 2nd annual All Sprung Out crafter market at Nanoose Place. Organizers of the market have pushed back this year’s event so that they could bring the market to the great outdoors. All Sprung Out and All Decked Out (the Christmas version) have become two of Mid- Vancouver Islands favourite craft markets for attendees and crafters alike. Megan Olsen of Arbutus Events; which organized All Sprung Out, said this year the market lands on Mother’s Day weekend so last minute shoppers should have no trouble finding that perfect gift for their favourite person. “We did it March 31st last year and it was a little too cold for outdoor vendors so we wanted to expand a bit and have more outdoor vendors.” One of the vendors participating outside this year is Nanoose Bay Succulents, which specializes in succulent plants in pots and planters. Olsen explained the idea behind the event is to encourage people to shop locally and help sustain the amazing crafters and artisans who live right here in the community.

"We strive to bring high quality crafts, products and food together in one great location" ~ Megan Olsen, Event Organizer

“This supports local artists… the people who don’t have store fronts and are trying to make a living doing craft fairs,” she stated. Olsen pointed out that craft markets are a good launch for artists to see how well received their products are before they decide to set up a store front.

“Our vendors always come back so that gives us an indication that we are doing something right. We have also started jurying a bit and now take in applications … that way we are not overloaded with jewellery or baby products and we have a wide a range of price points.” There are more than vendors this year including: Strange Bird Studio (curious and eclectic kiln formed glass), Old City Soapworks (beautifully crafted handmade soap), Shi Studio (unique Chinese silk jewellery), Mirabeans (fabric wearables from new and recycled material) just to name a few.

She added that it is also beneficial for shoppers who want a wide variety of items all under one roof.

Entry is by donation with partial proceeds going to Nanoose Community Cupboard and Olsen said over the years the event has raised thousands of dollars for the local food bank.

“We strive to bring high quality crafts, products and food together in one great location.”

“We hope to continue the legacy we have worked on over the years for many to come.”

Olsen admitted that there is a lot of juggling and strategic planning that goes into organizing a successful craft fair.

The market will be open Saturday May 11th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nanoose Place on Northwest Bay Road in Nanoose Bay.
