ANNOUNCEMENT Every event comes from an idea and a need, and those things haven’t stopped for Whats On Digest. The last few weeks have flung society as we know it into a flurry of change and decision paralysis. From becoming sanitary servants, to the opportunist re-inventing themselves, the world has tipped and everyone is struggling to keep their footing. But some things never change, no matter what is happening around us. Humans are curious and resourceful creatures, when one door shuts we search for another to open, where opportunity exists we will venture towards it. Because our business has always been to bring people together in participation, and to build community through entertainment, fun activities and an abundance of life that is what we will continue to do. None of those things have changed. Over the next month, and maybe more we will capture some interesting, new things that people are doing to keep themselves and their virtual community entertained. We will share with you, the businesses that have pushed all the boundaries on ingenuity and are continuing to offer products and services. You will be able to continue following the What’s On Digest by subscribing to our newsletter or on our social media platforms. We look forward to keeping you connected. ~ Tom Alexander, Parksville, Qualicum Beach Publisher

Butterflyway Project Heading outdoors is one way to keep you and your family from getting cabin fever
Story by Brenda Gough
W
ith schools, workplaces and activity centres closed due to the Coronavirus pandemic, heading outdoors is one way to keep you and your family from getting cabin fever and the good new is … nature is always open. In this extraordinary time, signs of spring renewal can help bring hope and joy and starting a project in your yard or on your patio can be one way to boost your family’s resilience. Studies have shown an association between visiting forests and improving immune responses. Most people know how important getting enough of the sunshine vitamin is and although Vitamin D is great for the immunity, so is nature bathing in the form of Vitamin N. There is increasing scientific evidence associating Vitamin N with reduced stress and improved mental and physical health. Connecting with critters out in nature is a great way to offset the downside of social distancing and there is no time like the present to support butterflies. Butterflies are perhaps one of the world’s most-loved insect species. They play an important role in pollinating the plants, flowers and vegetables that we need on the earth. Not only are they harmless, but their colourful wings that vary from one species to the next are the most beautiful hues that nature has blessed us with.
Despite how beautiful they are there are some ugly trends regarding butterfly populations and increasing their likelihood of extinction. The David Suzuki Foundation (DSF) has plenty of nature loving projects that people can take on in support of butterflies whether they live in the city, the suburbs or in rural neighbourhoods. One of them, the citizen-led Butterflyway Project aims to help revive pollinators one butterfly-friendly planting at a time. Over the past three years, the Canadawide project has recruited and trained 599 Butterflyway Rangers who have connected with neighbours, schools, city agencies, businesses and community groups. Lindsay Coulter, Senior Public Engagement Specialist aka the Queen of Green for the DSF said to date they’ve helped get 28,908 butterfly-friendly wildflowers into the ground, create 754 pollinator patches and grow Butterflyways in many communities. The project began in five Canadian cities in 2017 with a team of volunteer Butterflyway Rangers in each. Their mission was to plant native wildflowers in yards, schoolyards, streets and parks to support bees and butterflies. The goal was to establish local “Butterflyways” by planting at least a dozen pollinator patches in each neighbourhood. CONTINUED ON PAGE 16

THINGS TO DO TO MARK HISTORY Right now we are living a very historical moment. Building a legacy or simple acts of kindness that help people stay connected through these times of separation is one of the things that will be reflected upon in the future.
MAKE A PHOTO ALBUM. We don’t know what 20, 50 or 100 years will be like from now, so we can’t rely on digital compatibility so its important to create some tangible history.
PHOTOS & VIDEOS. Other interesting photos are the signage telling us how we should live, lets capture some of that. Take pictures of what children have been doing, like coloured rocks, and chalk art on roads, all the hearts in houses, birthday parades, honouring the front line. Having a 6 ft separation meeting or gathering, what people did for hugs when they couldn’t touch. Create an album, you can even print it and turn it into a hardcover book using some online sources such as www.mixbook. com OR www.artifactuprising.com.

TO MARK HISTORY
TIME CAPSULE. Many families do these when there is a milestone in their life. Create a COVID-19 time capsule that includes a record of time and thoughts during a pandemic.
COLLECT MEMORANDUMS. Photos, poetry, games you played, a recipe that was popular or new, even some voice recordings. Personal goals, frustrations, fears and reflections. Anything that will tell the story of what way happening.
MAKE A 2020 CANADIAN FLAG. Create a flag that illustrates your community or your family during this time. Hang it from your house and encourage others to do the same.
RECORD STAGES. Husbands and wives, parents and children or by yourself, let’s face it the first month was like nothing we have experienced before. There were so many stages of mental breakdowns, drinking, eating, goal setting, dancing, colouring hair, and staying busy to block out some realities. Many lost track of what day it was, and what time of day it was, morning become night, night became day and so on. Record this with photos, videos, blogs, or stories.
MAKE A LEGACY. Decide on a contribution you want to make to the world or to your community or family. Simple acts of kindness is a good place to start.
TURN YOURSELF INSIDE OUT. Send a random someone something you have made with your resources together with something that is from your town. CONTINUED ON PAGE 18

Butterflyway Project continued
Coulter said habitat loss from development, the widespread use of pesticides and climate change has put a strain on butterfly species and many insect populations have been declining. Their disappearance affects nearly all flowering plants and the food webs they support but Coulter pointed out that by recruiting people to create and restore butterfly habitats, we can offset what has been destroyed. The Butterflyway Project aims to re-imagine our gardens, lawns, roadsides, parks and schoolyards as part of neighbourhood-wide highways of habitat. Coulter said even if you have a small plot in the city you can transform it into a refuge for butterflies on short flight paths. “There is a lot we can do, even in urban environments. You can provide everything a butterfly needs in your yard. We have an important role to play in urban areas.” In 2017 Coulter trained 25 rangers in the Victoria area and their efforts have made a positive impact on the insect populations. She pointed out that even a small group of residents can make a big difference and one only has to look at what the rangers have accomplished in Victoria to see the impact of the work done by just a few people. “Many of the rangers in Victoria have done some pretty amazing things. We are all connected to earth, Mother Nature and one another and the project helps people connect. Some are budding biologists and others come in because they are artists but they part of something bigger than themselves,” she emphasized. She said rangers not only make their communities greener and healthier, they create opportunities, connect people and champion fun ideas. “Being attentive to life helps us better understand and act on the understanding that we are all interconnected and embedded in and indebted to the Earth.” This year the project accepted 252 rangers from 166 communities across Canada and they have been receiving on-line training. Coulter said they had planned to accept about 40 applicants but because of the COVID-19 pandemic they increased the numbers.
“We felt people could use something uplifting. The plan was to do 15 cities and 12 schools but we decided to accept everybody.” She said with schools being closed some school yard projects may have to happen in the fall planting season but she acknowledged that some teachers are getting creative by dropping seeds off on door steps or supplying kits to students. Coulter said you don’t have to be ranger to help butterflies in your community and she invites you to attract pollinators into your backyard, patio or windowsill garden with some welcoming wildflowers. Flowers provide nectar and pollen to feed beneficial insects. They also supply places for butterflies to lay their eggs and for caterpillars to forage. Clumps of colourful wildflowers blooming in your garden from spring to fall help feed and shelter the 70 species of local butterflies on Vancouver Island. Butterflies and moths host and feed on a variety of common wildflowers and Coulter said switching to native plants is a good start. The soil and climate of a region help determine what plants and animals live there. Native plants have evolved over millennia. They provide vital food and shelter for native insects and wildlife, and are perfectly suited to local growing conditions. All gardens are not created equal. Just ask any butterfly and think beyond providing flowers for nectar in the height of summer. Many butterfly species don’t migrate. You can provide habitat and food for their entire life cycle — eggs, larvae, pupae and adults — throughout the year. For more information on how to be a butterfly champion or to be trained as a Ranger next year you can subscribe to Coulter’s monthly digest at https:// davidsuzuki.org/sign-up-queen-of-green/ For a native plant list visit: https:// davidsuzuki.org/what-you-can-do/attractbutterflies-with-native-plants-westerncanada/ or https://davidsuzuki.org/ wp-content/uploads/2019/05/native-plantsfor-vancouver-butterfly-gardens-2.pdf To plant a butterfly garden visit: https:// davidsuzuki.org/queen-of-green/how-tocreate-a-butterfly-garden/

Covid-19 and Garbage Pickup Heading keep your collection drivers safe.
Story by Brenda Gough
I
t is hard dirty work and garbage collection can be hazardous at the best of times. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, garbage, recycling and food waste curbside collection is continuing as scheduled in the Oceanside region but residents are being asked to take some extra steps to protect sanitation workers. The Regional district of Nanaimo (RDN) needs the publics help to keep their collection drivers safe by taking the following precautions: All garbage waste must be bagged and securely tied, including: all paper towels, tissues, toilet paper, face masks, gloves, and disposable sanitary wipes flushable and compostable. Prior to the outbreak of the Corona virus, some paper items were allowed in your recycling and food waste containers but not any more. These paper items cannot be disposed of in green bins because they pose a health threat. If someone is sick in your household, it is
especially crucial that you double-bag and securely tie all personal waste. Waste items that do not adhere to the new guidelines will be left behind no exceptions. What’s on Digest Parksville Qualicum Beach reporter Brenda Gough requested some clarification from RDN Manager of Solid Waste Services Larry Gardner about the new guidelines and the ramifications COVID-19 is having on RDN waste management operations. BG: Have workers found many homes where they have had to refuse to take waste? LG: I believe this question relates to our residential curbside collection particularly where we have asked for all waste to bagged: https://www.rdn.bc.ca/curbside-collection. The short answer is that there have been few homes where waste has been left behind. Again, residents have been very cooperative and understanding on this.

BG: What are some of the new challenges sanitation workers are facing due to COVID-19? LG: Staff know the importance and have always been great at donning appropriate personal protective equipment, and, they were quick to adopt social distancing standards. For the most part, our customers have been very respectful of this. The cleaning and wiping down of “touch points” is much more intense than the norm. Probably the biggest change is at the landfill and transfer stations as we need more space than usual between customers which reduces the amount of traffic we can process in a given time. Unfortunately, this often results in wait times and delays for the customers. We are only accepting visa, debit, MasterCard (no cash at this time); customers have been great about this change. BG: Is the public doing a good job at sorting? LG: We believe many people are storing materials and respecting our requests to limit trips to RDN facilities and other depots. We did see some slippage as some of the recycling depots were closed or operating on reduced hours. Sorting, based on observations of RDN facility staff, appears to back at prepandemic levels. Collectively as a community we can always do better on sorting as much of our waste stream is still recyclable. That being said, the RDN is a world leader in waste diversion which is an indication of
COVID-19 & Garbage Pickup continued
the level of commitment by residents of our community. Of interest, because we have been so successful, our community is being featured on CBC television show Good People airing on June 5. https://www.cbc.ca/ mediacentre/program/good-people. BG: Has the amount of waste people generate increased since the pandemic has kept people home? LG: Not really. We had an initial spike in residential traffic at the start of the pandemic as many people have been working or staying at home. It seems there is some relationship between “self-isolation” and “do yard work and clean up around the home”. We’ve seen some reduction in commercial waste amounts as many businesses are not operating or operating on a limited basis. Depending on how long the pandemic lasts and the response in the economy postpandemic will really impact the amount of waste that is generated. When the economy is thriving, more waste is generated; in a slow economy, waste generation falls. Waste collected through residential curbside as well as waste received as our facilities is something we routinely track. BG: Do workers often encounter more than garbage including dead animals and dangerous chemical waste? CONTINUED ON PAGE 21

LG: In residential curbside collection, there are rarely dead animals or of such a small size that there is no real impact to collection. Dead animals are accepted at the regional landfill as a controlled waste. People are encouraged to call ahead if they are bringing this material to the landfill. Household hazardous waste is much more common in municipal waste streams. Most of this material is covered by provincial stewardship programs and can be taken to depots. The RDN “what goes where” found at this site: https://www.rdn.bc.ca/whatgoes-where makes it fairly easy to find out where end of life material can go. (“What goes where” is also available through the RDN Curbside App which will also gives you reminders to set out materials on collection day). RDN staff can be contracted for disposal options on Household Hazardous waste that is not collected through the provincial stewardship program (i.e. orphaned material). The RDN also plans to introduce a program for the management of these orphaned materials in 2021 to keep them out of the waste stream. BG: Is the risk of needle sticks and exposure to infectious diseases a particular concern? LG: A concern yes, but managed through appropriate use of PPE. Staff do not directly
touch waste which largely eliminates the hazard. The move to an automated curbside collection system in the fall, where a mechanical arm picks us residential waste bins, further eliminates the risk of sticks from needles or other sharp objects. BG: Is it illegal to dump medical waste? LG: The province sets definitions for “biomedical waste” which is strictly controlled as a Hazardous Waste and not accepted at RDN facilities. The use of the term “medical waste” used by the waste industry is materials coming from medical facilities that are not “biomedical waste” and are accepted at RDN facilities. For example, an IV bag and tubing does not meet the definition of biomedical waste and is an acceptable waste type. As another example, we encourage sharps to be placed in sharps containers which most pharmacies will accept returns. However, we recognize that some are placed in residential garbage which is not strictly illegal; it is however, critical that these be placed in a robust container to eliminate the needle stick injury risk. Again, the best option is to return the sharps to a pharmacy or other receiver (see “what goes where”).
