Canadian Cancer Society Cops for Cancer

TOUR DE ROCK Why do law enforcement officers and media members commit to months of arduous training and embark on a journey away from their family and friends for two weeks? Why do organizations, businesses and ordinary people pledge to raise thousands of dollars? Simple, to show families who have a child with cancer that they do not have to face the journey alone. Although cancer is a rare disease in children, it is the leading cause of death after accidents and its impact is devastating. Oceanside RCMP Corporal, Jesse Foreman has pledged to ride the Tour De Rock and raise funds for those children struggling with this brutal disease.

How can you help? Attend any local Tour De Rock fundraiser and show your support, or give a tax deductible donation online at: copsforcancerbc.ca.tourderock/JesseForeman Oceanside RCMP Corporal, Jesse Foreman

P-ART-Y

on the Drive September 8, 2013 story by BRENDA GOUGH

arksville's Resort Drive will be bustling with artists, musicians, food vendors and more for the second annual P-ART-Y on the Drive on Sunday, September 8. With the tremendous success of the inaugural event last year - which had more than 2000 people in attendance - organizers are gearing up for an even bigger and better party this year. Event planner Carrie Powell-Davidson said they have added more artists and more activities to this year’s street fair and Resort Drive will be the place to be from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on September 8. “This year we have increased the number of artists to include all of Vancouver Island and we have invited local businesses that provide interactive activities,” she said. There will be vendors set up from one end of Resort Drive to the other and PowellDavidson said that this year they have also invited some non-profit groups from the community to take part. The aim of the event is to bring artists and musicians together in nature for a celebration of the arts in our area and she said that goal was accomplished when they wrapped up last year’s party.

"People were in such a great mood as they meandered about the entire resort area." She stated they loved all the artists, the food vendors and the variety of musical performances but what really stood out for her was how many people had never been to Parkville's Resort Drive. "I can't tell you how many folks told me that they had no idea how much was here; it was like a whole new community had just opened up to them!" She said the resorts along the Parksville waterfront are not just for tourists and many of them will be holding mini open houses on Sunday so locals can check them out and perhaps plan for a future stay-cation. This year there will be six stages, all running musical acts throughout the entire festival. Powell-Davidson said they have assembled a broad range of talented people to show our diversity in genres and demographics. From the soothing sounds of Peter Jack Rainbird, to the upbeat Calypso and African music of Kumbana Marimba, there will be music to please everyone. For those who like to dance to modern rock, make sure you check out Exit 51 who will be performing in the parking lot of Sunrise Ridge Resort.

“I can't tell you how many

folks told me that they had no idea how much was here; it was like a whole new community had just opened up to them!

~ Carrie Powell-Davidson, Event Planner

The six-piece band is starting to get a reputation in these parts as a group that is guaranteed to fill the dance floor. Their diverse play list includes a lot of dance music from the 90’s and newer. Covering the music of bands like The Black Eyed Peas, Serena Ryder, The Black Keys, The Tragically Hip, Franz Ferdinand and Sublime, the party band has a set list that includes rock, reggae and hip hop covers. Several food vendors will be on site offering up something to please everyone’s palette. If you love bacon, Marcus Chandler will help you get some pork on your fork. The bacon boss - who operates the Extreme Eatz food truck - will be dishing up his famous poutine as well as other delicious diet destroyers. La Vida Vegan’s Mexican inspired food and juice will be there along with AJ's Island Grill. Karma Coffee will be pouring their certified organic, ethically sourced java and Robar'z Homebaked Bread and Delicious Delectables will satisfy you sweet tooth. Now in its ninth year, the fair is an established presence in the Oceanside autumn calendar with its emphasis on family fun and fellowship, great food and entertainment and value-packed booths of all kinds. The fair has been an annual Parksville event since 2003. Beyond the giant garage sale there will be concession stands, books, clothing, furniture, jewellery, a silent auction, baking, preserves, fresh produce, plants and a delicious strawberry tea.

Admission to the fair is free and all proceeds are used to support charities in the community, as well as worthy causes internationally. Outdoor activities will kick off with the garage sale and used furniture tent at 8:00 a.m. with the Knox building complex opening at 8:30 a.m. The best booth bargains usually go to the early birds but if you are not a morning person, you have until 2 p.m. to browse the Quality Corner selection of intriguing treasures. There will be a food concession, popcorn, ice cream and other activities to entertain the entire family. Entertainment starts at 9:30 a.m. with the Rainbow Stew Cloggers, at 10:30 a.m. the Old Time Fiddlers perform, at 11:30 a.m. Second Wind is on stage and

at 12:30 it’s the Sand Dollar Square Dancers. For kids there will be a cookie walk, facepainting and other fun activities. For fashionistas on a budget, the women’s clothing and accessory section will be packed with bargains. The gently-used ladies clothing section is so big it takes up the entire stage. With quality curios, Christmas and craft supplies, children’s clothing and toys, household linens, locally-grown produce, plants and sturdy furniture this flea market will be filled to the brim. For weeks now, church volunteers have been hard at it - collecting, baking, sorting, organizing, emailing and yes, praying, in preparation for the big day. Gerry Garnett, a member the Fall Fair committee said the event has become Knox’s premier annual fundraiser and the Herculean effort begins months before the fair. Garages and storage lockers stuffed with donations have to be sorted, priced and assembled. Garnett said they have 200 people volunteering in many different ways and every contribution of time and effort is rewarded with new friendships. “Most of the volunteers are from the church. They include teenagers to 90 year olds. It is a great way to meet so many people,” he said. Last year the strawberry tea was held outside and Garnett said they will take it outdoors again this year because “It is always sunny.” Organizers encourage residents to park at Ballenas Secondary School and take the free shuttle service to the church. Admission to the fair is free and all proceeds are used to the support charities in the community, as well as worthy causes internationally. Last year $83,000 was donated to support Knox’s ongoing programs that touch the lives of many people. HARVEST OF MUSIC festival FESTIVAL 24 fb.com/whatsonpqb

September 27–29, 2013

HARVEST OF MUSIC

We are going to play music “from all parts of the world.

story by BRENDA GOUGH

~ Ron Hadley, TOSH Music Director

f you love music that spans all genres, mark the weekend of September 27, 28 and 29 on your calendar for the 9th annual Harvest of Music Festival.

“They all say they are impressed with the great love for music our audience has … they are so attentive and it is a great pleasure for musicians to play here,” Hadley emphasized.

The Old School House (TOSH) Arts Centre is the place to go between April and September for live music, but the big event of the year happens this month with a lineup of entertainment that is sure to satisfy everyone’s musical palette.

It all begins on Friday September 27 with a performance featuring international jazz star Jim Cameron on tenor sax and his quartet.

TOSH Music Director Ron Hadley has lined up a weekend jam packed with incredible music performed in a wide range of genres. “There is a whole gamut of styles and types of music for a very reasonable price,” explained Hadley who added that with ticket prices ranging between $10 and $16, it is an affordable way to hear the finest in live music without leaving town. Hadley said the intimacy of the gallery at TOSH has made it a popular venue for performers who make sure they include Qualicum Beach in their tour schedule. “They enjoy playing here. Over the years we have had people come from all over the world to perform.” Not only do musicians like the performance space, they also appreciate the great reception they receive from the concert goers.

Performing jazz that ranges from great old standards to gems of modern jazz to original compositions, the tenor saxophone player is guaranteed to get your toes tapping. Joining Cameron will be Liam Hockley on clarinet, Ron Hadley on piano, Ken Lister on bass and Buff Allen on drums. Cameron is one of the most highly respected jazz players in the Boston music scene and he and Hadley have been playing together for over 30 years. “It is a real treat to play with him. He can play all different styles; Dixieland, bee bop, free jazz … old fashioned songs the way they are supposed to be played that bring tears to peoples eyes” said Hadley. On Saturday afternoon it is the Spotlight on Youth featuring classical pianist Vivian Lou. The 16 year old plays with a confidence and sensitivity far beyond her years and has already won major competitions inside and outside of Canada. She will present program of compositions
