a

SOCK thing

Nestled in the heart of downtown Courtenay in a 100 year old heritage building, you will find Sock Soirée, offering a plethora of great quality socks for women, men and children. Yep, that’s right - Socks! So often we are asked, “How did you come up with the idea to open a sock shop?” 15 years ago while visiting San Francisco’s Fishermans Wharf, I happened to stumble upon this amazing sock shop (you may know the one). My jaw dropped, my heart skipped a beat, and I quickly went in to delight in all the colours, textures, designs and patterns of leg wear! I’ve always been a “fibre fanatic”, so of course, I was awe struck.

After many hours researching how and where to buy our socks, we created a criteria. We want our socks to come from independent designers or family owned sock mills, be of high quality, and an ethical approach to the sock world. SO , we placed our first order, which was just big enough to fill a couple of totes, then set out. Once again frequenting markets, festivals and setting up as a “pop up store” we experienced such an overwhelmingly positive response that we decided it was time to set up a permanent shop. As luck has it we found a lovely character space in downtown Courtenay and within two and a half weeks of hard work we opened our sock shop, “Sock Soirée.”

Several year later, I was designing and sewing a line of clothing that Jason and I would sell at a variety of markets and festivals. The only thing we were missing, that was greatly needed, was leg wear.

Since opening in December 2012 we have more than doubled our stock, we are building an online store and are looking into designing our own sock brand, preferably made in Canada. We also have leggings, leg warmers, tights and a small selection of independently made and designed clothing.

As many of you may know, island living is not always about making a fashion statement. However, Jason and I had a vision….. keeping our toes, feet and legs warm and comfy, while chopping and bringing in the firewood, defrosting the water pipes, fixing the roof, digging the dirt, chasing the kids (you get the idea), all the while with a bit of flair. Socks! Fantastically designed, great quality, comfortable socks. Hence, Sock Soirée was born! Yes, we love to put on our favourite socks and strut our stuff.

We meet so many incredible people and love hearing their “sock stories.” Its great to see so many other sock lovers get as excited for our store as I did the first time I saw a sock shop. Having our store also allows us the opportunity to continue educating ourselves and others about new and different socks, sock fabrics, sock care, sock manufacturing and a better understanding of the quality products. Both Jason and myself thrive in a creative environment, working solo, with one another or collaborating with others in the community, in all sorts of exciting projects. In the winter months we host open mic nights, as well we have year round in-store raffles, contests and sales all of which help us to raise funds to then donate to local charities. We are big supporters of the arts and culture in the valley and gives all of us a chance to parade our socks. After all, if you’re going to have socks…have them be beautiful!!! Sock Soirée! - Sunday Dennis (and Jason too!) Located at 441 Cliffe Ave, Courtenay, (0pp Sid Williams Theatre) 250-334-1992
