ARBUTUS ROOTS

Hailing from right here in the Cowichan Valley is Arbutus Roots, this month’s homegrown artist spotlight. Ryan King, Darien Pridham, Jordan Findlay, and Matt Harder, all raised with deep roots in Duncan, make up this dynamic four piece that reach way beyond any simple musical classification. “None of us are trying to be anything we’re not, and we aren’t trying to fit into any genre or box,” says singer and guitarist Matt Harder. With influences as broad as Dave Mathews, Coheed and Cambria, John Mayer, City and Colour, and Florence and the Machine, their songs have varied musical timbre and emotion, with well-executed instrumentation. “We want our music to show the thought we put into it. Every note, mood, and emotion has been carefully thought out, but comes out from a natural place. We never try to force anything out,” says Harder. After releasing their first single, recorded by Malcolm Owen-Flood (Band of Rascals), their first bigger gig quickly came knocking. Sun Fest heard their release and brought them on to perform at the 2017 festival. While not actually being a country band, their genre bending style, and obviously Ryan’s banjo playing, made them a hit with the crowd. They currently have an album in the works, with no specific release date yet, but follow them on facebook to get updates. Beyond their music, they are just really nice guys that are easy to work with, and have a warm and playful stage presence that draws in the audience, making for a laid-back evening of tunes. Be sure to resist the temptation of Netflix next time you see they are playing, and check them out. Their next show will be at the Osborne Bay Pub on Nov. 16 with another local band Kevin’s Bacon.

Glass Tiger Few bands that came out of the Canadian pop-rock scene in the 80s had the same level of international impact as Glass Tiger, with songs like “Don’t Forget Me (When I’m Gone)” and “Someday” always coming to mind as part of the soundtrack to growing up in the era of big hair and shoulder pads. The boys from Newmarket, Ontario are celebrating 31 years together as a band, with three of itchell

the four members being founding members from back in the Tokyo days—before changing their name to Glass Tiger.

With a new album, aptly titled 31 featuring reimagined versions of their old hit songs plus a couple of new ones thrown in for good measure, Glass Tiger are back in the saddle and riding throughout the Island in early November, starting out in Campbell River on Nov. 6, Duncan Nov. 7, Nanaimo Nov. 9, and Victoria Nov. 10. “We are really looking forward to being back on the island,” says keyboardist Same Reid. “It’s one of the most beautiful places to be.” Glass Tiger first played on the Island back in 1986 in Victoria, and in the later days explored the other communities on tour. About four years ago they did another run of

theatre shows and played many of the same venues they will be performing at on this tour. Some folks may have caught them as special guests on tour with Johnny Reid recently, where they gave their reworks a light test drive on a few audiences, and received a warm reception. Reid actually recorded and produced their new album in Toronto and Nashville, as well as co-wrote one of the new tracks. “The studio in Nashville belongs to Johnny, and is an old retrofitted barn [...] We actually slept upstairs there in what used to be the old hayloft.” says Sam Reid. Also appearing on the album are Julian Lennon, Alan Doyle, Véronic DiCaire, Susan Aglukark, and David R. Maracle. An impressive part of the album is that nearly every song is in it’s original key, with Alan Frew still nailing all his vocal parts. The only song to have any major key change is “Diamond Sun” which goes from the key of G to B simply to give it a different feel. Traditional acoustic instruments act as the standout difference from the original recordings, giving the album a more adult-contemporary feel, and almost growing with their audience.

Definitely expect a mix of original and modern versions of their songs on this tour. Before they hit the Eastern and Western Canadian legs of the tour, they are really excited to play the Rockingham Festival in Nottingham, England, where they haven’t played for 25 years. “That set will be all the original electric versions of the songs,” says Sam Reid. Regardless of where you catch them this tour, you will find that Glass Tiger has matured along with their music, but every element that made them Canadian icons is still very much there.

Did you know that the Cowichan Therapeutic Riding Association’s Adapted Equestrian Vaulting program is open to everyone?! For the uninitiated, equestrian vaulting (best described as gymnastics and dance on horseback) is an equestrian sport with ancient Greco-Roman origins. During the Renaissance, vaulting was a type of riding drill used to develop the agility of cavalry riders. Modern vaulting was developed in post-war Germany as a method for introducing children to equestrian sports. Vaulting was recognized by the FEI (the international governing body for horse sport) in 1983, and in 1990, vaulting was included for the first time at the World Equestrian Games. Today, vaulting is gaining popularity across the world as a popular introduction, supplement, or alternative to commonplace equestrian disciplines like show jumping, reining, and dressage. A handful of organizations have adapted the activity for participants with special needs – including the Cowichan Therapeutic Riding Association (CTRA). CTRA’s adapted equestrian vaulting program is an inclusive initiative that welcomes participants of all abilities. In addition to the myriad physical benefits of equestrian sport (e.g. development of strength, coordination, flexibility, and stamina), vaulting promotes self-confidence and facilitates empowerment. Moreover, the team atmosphere helps participants deconstruct perceptions of differences and form supportive, positive social bonds. CTRA’s vaulting club, the “Warmland Vaulters” includes members with a diverse range of ages, skill levels, and abilities who work as a unit to create impressive performances set to music. This summer, the Warmland Vaulters performed at both the RCMP musical ride and the Cowichan Exhibition – to great acclaim. Community members of all ages and abilities to join CTRA’s upcoming “Try It!” events and give equestrian vaulting a whirl! A “Future Flyers” session for children aged 4-8 will be offered Oct 13 (4:30-5:30pm) & a youth session for children aged 9-16 will be offered October 20 (4:30-6pm). Both events are priced at $25 for CTRA members or $35 for non-members. Adults can stay tuned for CTRA’s next “Ladies Night” event, returning soon by popular demand! To register for CTRA’s upcoming Try-It! events or to learn more about equestrian vaulting, contact info@ctra.ca / 250-746-1028 or follow CTRA on Facebook @CowichanTherapeuticRidingAssociation.
