He agreed that his magical moment with Monet altered the style of artwork he grew up with. Up until that time Held was known for his art nouveau designs and American painter Jackson Pollack’s abstract paintings had been his major influence but it wasn’t long after he returned from Giverny that it all changed. “It took a few years but I kept going back to one painting of Monet’s. It is called The Poppy Field. Being from California I wanted to do California poppies which are orange. I started doing those but I introduced red poppies every so often and the more red poppies I put in the more I sold and the red ones took over. It evolved from that and every time I thought about coming up with something new, the emotions and feelings that I had in that garden in Giverny would come back,” he acknowledged. Held who has been creating beautiful artwork for more than 40 years said creating the exhibit at the MAC is just one of the many ways he contributes to the local arts scene. He said he hopes the multi-media exhibit immerses visitors in the beauty of Monet’s garden as it is today. MORE INFORMATION

her love of home décor into a business. “Even when I was fresh out of high school and working and I got my first apartment I made my own furniture with the help of my dad. I wrote to Women’s Day because on the cover was a sofa, love seat and a chair and you could send away for the instructions. I couldn’t afford new furniture and I said to my dad if I get the instructions will you do the wood part,” Linford recalled. After completing the project she realized she had a natural creative and artistic flair. Acquaintances are always asking her for advice on what to do with their homes, be it color selection or room layout. If you want to give an old piece of furniture new life but don’t have the confidence of the DIY pros Linford can walk you through the process at her workshops. Re-inventing and restoring long ago furniture into functional, stylish treasures is her specialty. She said it is easy to revive old furniture or decorate accessories with a line of chalk paint she carries by Country Chic Paint. “It is a chalk and clay based paint and presently very popular because of the matte finish it leaves on surfaces. With Country Chic Paint you can paint wood, plastic, metal and glass. You can put it on just about any surface.” Linford said the Canadian company
which is located on Vancouver Island, uses environmentally conscious ingredients in their products. “It is environmentally friendly and it is odourless. I can be painting in the kitchen and no one can smell it. The other reason I went with this line is because of the colour selection and price point. I have tried many other lines and Country Chic Paint was very easy to use and environmentally superior to many other brands,” she stated. Linford’s chalk painting workshops are popular and fill up quickly. Because she keeps them small with only four students at a time she said she can offer better one-on-one guidance. Do you have an old dresser or perhaps an old end table collecting dust in the garage? At her hands-on workshops you will learn all the basics to begin painting furniture and give your antiquated, sentimental items a new life. Joke of the Month A young man excitedly tells his mother he’s fallen in love and is going to get married. He says, “Just for fun, Mom, I’m going to bring over three women and you try and guess which one I’m going to marry.” The mother agrees. The next day, he brings three beautiful women into the house and sits them down on the couch and they chat for a while. He then says, “Okay, Mom. Guess which one I’m going to marry.” She immediately replies, “The red-head in the middle.” Stunned, the young man says, “That’s amazing, Mom. You’re right. How did you know?” “I don’t like her,” she says.
