A treat is in store for Cowichan Valley entertainment seekers of all ages this summer as the locallybased Shawnigan Players present their seventh annual Shakespeare Festival at Gem o’ the Isle farm in Cowichan Station. For the very first time this year, not one but two brand new plays

are being performed: The Tempest, a magical desert island adventure, and The Merry Wives of Windsor, a saucy, sexy comedy of romance gone wrong (and right). Shakespeare’s timeless tales leap off the stage and will have you laughing, crying, and clutching your seat as the characters dodge sea-storms and scandal, dirty laundry and devilish plots. Don’t miss your chance to participate in the fun - and be sure to bring your whole family!

Pictured left to right are Sylvia Swift (Mistress Ford), Drew Kemp (Sir John Falstaff), and Laura Faulkner (Mistress Page) from The Merry Wives of Windsor production.

A woman went to her doctor’s office. She was seen by one of the new doctors, but after about 4 minutes in the examination room, she burst out screaming and ran down the hall. An older doctor stopped her and asked what the problem was, and she explained. The older doctor marched back to the new doctor and demanded, “What’s the matter with you? Mrs. Terry is 63 years old, she has four grown children and seven grandchildren, and you told her she was pregnant?” The new doctor smiled smugly “Cured her hiccups though, didn’t it?”

This year the Cowichan Exhibition is celebrating a very special anniversary. It's been 150 years since the area’s first exhibition was held on October 14, 1868 at Saint Peter’s Church, Quamichan. It was reported in an article written up a few days later, that this exhibition was held in conjunction with the Church’s annual Harvest Home Thanksgiving. Readers of the paper learned that “…the first effort towards an agricultural exhibition… caused quite an excitement in this otherwise quiet settlement.” Following the service and judging of the exhibits, 120 guests sat down to “…a sumptuous lunch…” Afterwards, the Cowichan, Salt Spring and Chemainus Agricultural Society was formed. For 150 years the Cowichan Exhibition has been a true community event. Thousands of unnamed volunteers, men and women, have continued to make each exhibition grow and be successful. The number of donated hours, services, supplies and money is impossible to calculate. “150 Years of Growing” is a most appropriate theme for this year. It is also the title of a new book that

follows the exhibition through the decades. The book will be launched on the weekend of the fair. Come take in the best showcase of 4-H clubs, cattle, horses, poultry, sheep, llamas, goats and pigs. Enjoy all that the valley produces in field & garden, honey, baking, canning, needlework, photography, hobbies and crafts. Head over to the Spirit Stage to listen to your favourite local talent and entertainers. Learn how to pan for gold with Yukon Dan. Carnival rides, a delightful selection of fine dining, shopping and entertainment round out the experience. We are bringing logging back to life with the 2018 LOGGERS SPORTS COMPETITION on Saturday, September 8th. And NEW this year on Sunday, September 9th is the FMX Extreme Freestyle Motocross show.

CTRA WELCOMES “GRADY THE GIANT” For the past several years, the Cowichan Therapeutic Riding Association (CTRA) has been searching for a special “unicorn” to help out in the association’s adapted equestrian vaulting program. Equestrian vaulting combines dance and gymnastics through a team-based musical performance aboard a moving horse. Adapted vaulting is modified for participants with a range of abilities, providing opportunities for vaulters with special needs to benefit from all the outcomes of equine-therapy in an environment that emphasizes teamwork. Finding horses suitable for vaulting (large, exceptionally trained, and accepting of all sorts of antics) is a difficult challenge. Finding a vaulting horse that is also suited for participants with special needs is almost impossible.

CTRA’s dreams came true with “Grady the Giant” – an exceptionally large (19 + hands!) Clydesdale/Quarter Horse cross who hails from Quesnel, BC. Thanks to a generous donation from Ann Lindwall and Foxstone Stable, CTRA was able to purchase this “one-in-a-million” horse, welcoming him to the herd this June. Grady’s sweet personality has already earned him a reputation as the “Gentle Giant” around the stable where he has quickly become a barn favourite. Those looking to see Grady in action can check him out at CTRA’s vaulting demonstrations at the RCMP Musical Ride on August 28th and the Cowichan Exhibition on September 8th (both events will be held at the Cowichan Exhibition Grounds). CTRA will also be hosting some “Try-It” days in August and September for both adults and children (of ALL abilities) interested in giving vaulting a whirl! The next registration for vaulting lessons is August 17th ($150/6 week session with a referral & $180 without).

For more information on CTRA’s program or any of these upcoming events please contact info@ctra.ca or 250-746-1028. Photo Credit: CTRA (left to right: Ann Lindwall, Helgi Sangret, and “Grady”)
