ECO FRIENDLY CRAFTS The desire to create eco-friendly and sustainable crafts, whether up-scaling a thrift store item or using sustainable materials in the project such as recycled materials or natural dyes. Felting: Dig up some of that wool laying around. Needle felting has begun, by rolling up a small amount of wool and stabbing it with the felting needle. When the wool is stabbed it pulls the wool into itself. By stabbing the wool with the needle over and over while turning the wool it continues to pull and lock together and forming a shape. Order from your local craft or yarn stores.
Garden Rock Painting: Pick up some of the smooth rocks laying around the yard and on the beaches. Break out the paint and start painting faces or rock pets for the garden. They make a great speaking piece. Make a Bug Hotel: You can create a sort of condo hotel by using a wooden box or cut a 2ltr plastic bottle. Create sections with alternating types of filler, such as leaves, twigs, bark, wood chips, reeds, sticks etc. Roll hollow tubes tightly so each tube is sealed. Depending on the size of the hole will determine

what sort of bugs that live there. Loop a piece of twine or yarn and hang from a tree or fence. how to at www.inhabit.com Seed bombs: Give back to mother earth with easy to make seed bombs. Blend together used scraps of construction paper, water, and seeds in a food processor, then form into tiny muffins. Let dry and then toss
in the ground. As the seed bombs receive sun and rain, the paper will eventually compost and the the seeds will germinate. Mosaic from old CD’s Transform and old piece of wood, make a wind chime, frame or reface some scraped chargers. Nearly all of us have old CD’s laying around. Break them into pieces and start gluing, seal with a natural varnish from Earth Paint.
Jigsaw bowls: These bowls are fun to make and a great way to give new life to old puzzles. Simply stick together with glue, you can make different shapes with balloons, balls, old plastic plant pots etcetera, anything that can break away. Paint or Varnish to seal.

IN 2 HOURS fi SCENIC WALK/HIKES: Nanaimo Harbourfront Walkway, The Harbourfront Walkway is a multiuse trail along the Newcastle Channel and downtown waterfront. Wheelchair accessible. Ammonite Falls is one of three significant waterfalls in Benson Creek, in Mount Benson’s northwestern foothills. Jameson Rd is a popular access to Ammonite Falls. The network of trails within the park will take you through various landscapes from forested trails to valleys, fields and rocky knolls. Loudon Park and Walkway is a popular spot year-round for swimming, various paddling sports, walking, and fishing. When you are an artist the struggle is already very real. Whether you’re plugging away at the gig life, teaching dance, or trying to sell your recent masterpiece, living the life of an artist at times, can seem more entrepreneurial than anything else. Throw a pandemic in there, and you have the recipe for one of the toughest career choices around.

Chantelle Norris is owner and artistic director of more than one dance hub, in fact, she owns a ballet company, a ballet school, and heads a prominent local pre-professional training program for aspiring dancers. So, she definitely has the artist lifestyle down to a tee. Her teaching week consists of non-stop action; from ten-hour days
in the classroom, endless work emails from 3 businesses, and commuting from Nanaimo to her studio on the Sunshine Coast. When asked Chantelle admits: “It sounds crazy when you list it all out, but honestly, it’s just how things are, and I make it work. I think dance is a necessity of life, and I want to share it with as many students as I possibly can within the limited time I have on this earth. It’s just necessary. It’s as simple as that.”

A plethora of online classes have inundated the internet this past month, as students, professionals, and teachers are left with nowhere to practice but their own living rooms. “It’s literally collapsed an entire industry, and with little relief in sight. So now it’s up to us to think of new ways of teaching our students and creating art.”
Recently nominated for a Top 20 Under 40 award and Powell River Chamber of Commerce Business award, Chantelle is a community leader in the arts both locally and abroad. But her success has certainly come with its share of trials and tribulations, especially since the strike of Covid-19. Her company “Nanaimo Contemporary Ballet” which was slated to debut their newest original production “Self-Construction” this April has had to cancel their Vancouver performances and postpone their Nanaimo premiere. It’s a shock both she and her company will not soon forget. “It’s devastating. Seven months of work blew away so quickly. Right now I am just praying we will find a weekend to re-book. But even then, it’s not concrete. The situation is so fluid.”
For now, “Nanaimo Contemporary Ballet” is looking at re-booking for June at the VIU Malaspina theatre in hopes “Self- Construction” will get it’s time in the limelight. In the meantime, she and many other local artists are grateful for any community support for the arts. The best way to keep small art-related companies alive is to donate the cancelled ticket costs back to the company itself. With so many shows cancelled due to Covid-19, these small businesses are left with massive overhead costs with no revenue to offset them. Many theatre technicians, marketers, stagehands, prop designers, make-up artists, and costumers are now without employment. It’s an industry in mourning.

Home: Our Way is a women’s weekend writing and movement circle that provides safe online space to explore ideas of refuge, transition, identity, cultural norms, blood memory and ultimately what it means to be “at home” in one’s experience. Participants will be guided through writing prompts and gentle movement explorations that encourage authentic reactions and creative responses to the question of “Home” as state of being. We delve into our own personal legacy stories with tender loving care for our bodies, hearts, minds and spirits. Throughout the workshop, participants will accumulate words and movements that reflect back to
them their own way of finding home in their experience. We witness one another as we share space and co-create a moving poem that includes words and gestures brought forward from our explorations. These words and movements will be gathered together as a sacred bundle. Curiosity and creativity are encouraged. Participants 18+ please. No previous experience required. We create a safe space agreement together and agree that anything shared in the workshop is kept confidential. Local community resources for mental health wellness will be distributed.

THE STORY OF KOOL AND CHILD FROM THE VERY BEGINNING The story of Kool and Child begins in Toronto, Ontario back in 1965. Louise and Kees Kool, immigrated to Canada from Holland and wanted their grandchildren to be provided with quality toys and learning materials. Louise Kool & Son Ltd. was then started. It was a school catalogue supply house selling product across Canada. Their son Morris Kool made yearly trips across the country with his truck full of merchandise to display at teacher conferences. When Kees passed away in 1979, the business was sold and Morris packed up his family and moved to the West Coast finally fulfilling his dream. He represented their former company as a sales rep. and eventually left that to open his own wholesale company, offering quality educational lines to Canadian toy stores. The store was called J & M Kool Ltd based in Vancouver. When Morris and his family came to Nanaimo in 1993,
their wholesale company was turned into a retail store and renamed ‘Kool & Child’. To date the store has over 6,000 square feet of retail space with almost everything you need for newborn children and up to keep them happy. Kool and Child still carries educational books and teacher supplies as well as numerous other items for your child(ren).
