SKETCHES – AN ACOUSTIC EVENING WITH NATALIE MACMASTER with Special Guests TIM EDEY, BEN WITTMAN and MARY FRANCIS LEAHEY
Sunday, March 15 at The Port Theatre Tickets are $47.50 $57.50 (all inclusive)
When there is nothing left to prove and no commercial hurdle left to clear, you are liberated to make the kind of music you want to make knowing the audience is already invested, going wherever the ride takes them. Such rarefied status belongs to superstar Canadian fiddler NATALIE MACMASTER, and that’s exactly the spirit fuelling “Sketches”, her dazzling 12th solo studio album and first since 2011’s “Cape Breton Girl”. “Sketches” is also the highly decorated musician’s first recording to feature fiddle with guitar but not piano as is customary with Cape Breton fiddle music. From “Morning Galliano”, a Celtic-meets-Galician corker that conjures a European, café-society ambiance while framing MacMaster’s scorching fiddle in the foreground, through a more orthodox Cape Breton-style vibe on boisterous barn-burners like “Three Reels”, “Fill’er Up For A Set” and “The Golden Eagle” to the achingly poignant read of
the ballad “I Can’t Make You Love Me”, made classic by Bonnie Raitt, “Sketches” defers to the space surrounding these radiant songs. This exhilarating mix of originals and covers, old tunes and new are propelled by MacMaster’s unmatched creative instincts which, alongside guitarist TIM EDEY, she follows fearlessly into emotional territory that runs from gleeful to heartbreaking. “Sketches” is in some ways the culmination of a lifetime’s worth of influences and ideas. Regarding the album NATALIE MACMASTER states, “I am absolutely thrilled with this record. TIM EDEY is a genius and a master; I am delighted that we were able to harness the beauty of just the fiddle and guitar. Even though the record is simple, it brings complexity of emotion and musicality. There’s sweetness and softness, sorrow and strength, power and everything. That’s what “Sketches” is and it’s unique in every way.”

Finally, you don’t need to force yourself into skinny jeans this Spring... there is a choice Wide legs are offering you fun and comfort. CULOTTES OR GAUCHOS are so popular and take you from day to evening wear, cruise or office. This style gives you a chance to flatter your waistline. Tuck in tops or cropped, shorter tops work best. Contrary to what you may think, a wide leg can lengthen the leg and accentuate the waist thus Petite ladies can also wear this style. The Importance of Regular Computer Maintenance Regular computer care by your technician can protect your investment and make your computer last longer. At a minimum your computer should be taken in on an annual basis. If you notice an abrupt change in how your computer is performing, you may want to shut it down and bring it in right away to avoid making the issue worse. A machine that’s not working its best can be expensive, time consuming and frustrating. Regular maintenance can detect small problems before they become big ones. At Bitrate Computer Services Steve ensures you have the most up-to-date protection for your system. Viruses and malware slow down processing time and infect entire operating systems. When you take your PC to Bitrate be sure to tell Steve what type of problems you

Fitness tip The Importance of Having a Strong Core
The core is the center of our body and includes muscles that stabilize the hips, the torso and the shoulders as we move our arms and legs during everyday tasks and athletic endeavours. Weak or inflexible core muscles can impair athletic performance and sap power from your movements. They can also lead to injury and crippling back pain as you perform the simplest of motions such as lifting a package, bending to put on shoes or turning to look behind you. In fact, a strong, flexible core underpins almost everything you do! So taking care of the muscles of your torso makes sense for everyone, and can in fact be critical to staying mobile and enjoying your life as you age.

Nanaimo Contemporary Ballet:
“Self-Construction”
The local pre-professional youth ballet company has met great success since its inception in 2016. Debuting three full length original works in Nanaimo and Vancouver, and most recently performing at the Victoria International Marina’s “Future Oceans,” which featured top artists and fashion designers from all over the world. The company of 24 dancers aged 12-26 has tackled some serious subject matter, and despite their young age, have never backed down from a politically charged topic. From the Syrian Refugee Crisis, social media dependency, the battle of the sexes, to ocean conservation; the young company is ambitious to say the least. Despite their past political concepts, NCB artistic director decided to take the audience on a much more personal

journey during their fourth season, and what better way to do that but by tapping into childhood. “I find choreography is at its best when it is fueled by our own memories and experiences. As someone who has almost completed living through my 30’s I really felt compelled to share that feeling with an audience in an indirect way, while also allowing them to reflect and consider their personal timelines,” said director Chantelle Norris. Nanaimo Contemporary Ballet is poised to bring audiences on a journey through time passed this April with their original production of “Self-Construction.”
As always, Nanaimo Contemporary Ballet boasts choreography by some big names in the dance industry such as Ballet B.C.’s Kirsten Wicklund, Jocelyn Wozencroft, Mike McInnes, and Harbour Dance Centre’s/PLATFORM’s Lisa Rose Metz. “Self-Construction” opens April 11th at the VIU Malaspina Theatre with showings at 2pm and 7:30pm before heading to Vancouver the following weekend. KOOL TOYS FOR “KIDS” FROM 1 TO 92 Springing Into Action! Winter will soon be leaving us, now it’s time to think about Spring! Whether we have snow or not, let’s plan for activities indoors and out! Toddlers are always busy “doing” their own special activities, sometimes it’s stacking blocks, playing with stuffed toys or reading their favorite book. What about putting down a plastic sheet with a big piece of paper on it and giving them finger paints? The sensation of taking a big blob of paint and squishing it between their fingers before smearing it all over the paper will give them extreme satisfaction and it’s fun. We have large pads of easel paper and two different size rolls from Melissa and Doug that would work for your young artist. Don’t forget chubby paint brushes, shaped sponges and textured paint rollers. For outside play, (whether the ground is dry enough or not) we have an assortment of buckets, shovels, rakes and wheelbarrows for them to dig in the dirt and gather treasures with their buckets in the back yard or at the beach! For older children, Spring Break (Mon. March 16- Fri. March 27) is happening and if you aren’t going away you will need activities to keep them busy. We have workbooks for them to keep up with their schooling, assorted games they can play alone or with friends and different types science kits they can put together to help keep the “I’m bored” moments away. What better way to keep active outside than to fly a kite in a big field or at the beach? Novice or pro kite flyer we have what you need. Have you heard of Moon balls? These are rubber balls that when you
bounce them hard enough (outside of course) they soar up into the air! What about Aerobie flying discs or the Aerobie Orbiter that will actually come back when you throw it. If you’re having difficulties coming up with ideas to keep your children busy, come and see us!

Matt Dunae AKA “SIRREAL” Independent Hip Hop Artist
SIRREAL (@sirrealmusicofficial) is the stage-name of Matt Dunae. Mr. Dunae is an Independent, music award nominated, hip-hop artist bringing hard-hitting reality and explosive stage presence to every performance. Devastated by the untimely death of both his father and older brother, SIRREAL learned to stand as a man conquering his demons of addiction and poverty. SIRREAL boldly laces his lyrics with the die-hard truths of the, often harsh, realities facing many on society’s fringes and the consequences of action whether they be positive or negative. SIRREAL’s musical style bridges many genres of music by blending truthful hard-hitting lyrics with the sound of a stage band: Blue Satellite. SIRREAL’s hustle and determination to spread his message of hip-hop positivity has allowed him to perform shows with Tech N9ne, Classified, Royce Da 5”9, Bone Thugs N Harmony, and T.I. just to name a few. SIRREAL recently won the Sunrise Records nationwide talent contest that saw his new album “In The Nick of Time” released across the chain’s 88 retail locations in Canada. You can purchase one of his physical albums on Vinyl or CD at any of Sunrise Records loca-
tions. The album has since gone on to independently sell more than 5,000 LP/EP in an era where LP music sales are very challenging. SIRREAL has a large social media following on Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram and a robust YouTube channel with nearly 250,000 views. He does a weekly live stream called “Lower Case Thursdays” with his 11-year old son that regularly sees 800-1000 viewers every week for so far 50 weeks. SIRREAL believes in a world where musical connection can be the antidote to death, depression and anxiety. For SIRREAL, music is medicine. The fact is that music has been around for longer than any vaccines, anti-depressants or painkillers that we see today. Rhythm is in our soul, our heartbeat and everything around us. What inspires SIRREAL the most is the ability to help people feel less alone through the messages they can relate to within his art. Hailing from Nanaimo BC Canada SIRREAL has been working with the community for the past 6 years by going to schools and talking to youth about suicide prevention, resilience and getting through hard times by expressing yourself through art. In that time SIRREAL has spoken to over 10,000 youth. Losing his brother, father and 2 best friends to suicide, SIRREAL knows the affect that it can have on families, communities and those left behind. He wants his message to make a difference and let people know that they are not alone with their struggles. He has made it his mission to give people the medicine of music. He has taken his experiences and turned his broken pieces into art. The best way you can support this up-andcoming local artist is to purchase his music. If you love hip hop or have someone on your list who does then please do not hesitate to get in touch and purchase one of his CD’s or you can purchase it digitally online via iTunes, Google Play, Amazon to name a few. For all show dates follow @SIRREALmusic and don’t miss “The Blue Album” release party at THE QUEENS May 23rd, 2020.

Ken Lavigne presents
Three Knights with a Tenor Thu Mar 26th @ 7:30 pm Port Theatre Nanaimo Ken Lavigne has stolen hearts of concert goers across North America with his captivating blend of classical tenor sound and contemporary style. He takes his audience on riveting and exciting adventures with spectacular songs and hilarious stories from his personal experiences. 3 Knights with a Tenor, an admittedly cheeky title, features the music of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, Sir Paul McCartney, and Sir Elton John. “It’s music I enjoy singing privately and it’s music I don’t get the opportunity to perform outside of my shower,” Ken says from his studio in Chemainus. “What makes these British Knights stand up is that their music still inspires young and old alike and I want to carry on the tradition.”

Ken has made a career performing a wide variety of artistic genres - from classical, folk and adult contemporary. Working through bodies of work from one iconic artist, the likes of Elton John for example, would be a daunting enough task on its own. Add two others of the highest calibre and it could be, understandably, overwhelming. “It was extremely difficult to choose the songs to perform because all three are extremely prolific and they have a mountain of songs,” Ken says. “The conclusion is you want to include them all, but you can’t.” For tickets call the Port Theatre at 250-754-8550

HELP US CELEBRATE 50 YEARS OF IGNITING THE POWER AND POTENTIAL IN YOUNG PEOPLE!
Potential lives within every young person. Yet thousands of children and youth are still in urgent need of someone who will stand in their corner and ignite their full power and potential.
community’s youth by developing and implementing a wide range of mentoring programs. One-to-one and group programs, for both in school and outside of school.
Many children and youth in our community and throughout the country struggle with societal barriers and face adversities in their lives like detrimental living conditions, family violence, risk factors for mental health, school issues and identity challenges. These circumstances have nothing to do with the value of who they are or who they can become, but because of these situations, children and youth risk not having the opportunity to live up to their full potential. This comes at a cost to the young person, and to society.
Each time we pair a child with a mentor or introduce a group of students to an in-school program, we start something incredible by building a developmental relationship between the mentor and the mentee that expresses care, challenges growth, provides support, shares power and expands possibilities. Proudly, it’s something our staff, volunteers and donors help bring about every day, and we’re very grateful for their generosity and support. On March 12th we invite you to join us for a special AGM where we will celebrate 50 years of mentoring in our community and share stories from our matches and our vision for the future. Check our website www.bigscvi. ca or www.whatsondigest.com for further details.
With the guidance and support of a mentor, these risks can be reduced or even avoided, and youth are reminded they can be anything they dream of being. For 50 years Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Vancouver Island has been making a positive difference in the lives of our

Nicholas Ross, a Nanaimo musician and teacher, is a double-instrumentalist. He plays both the trumpet and the violin. Mr. Ross, who moved from Sudbury to Nanaimo a few years ago, readily established himself as a performer and teacher of both instruments and has worked with a variety of individuals and groups. Of the move he states, “The wonderful thing about being a musician and teacher is that, if you move, you have a ready-made community around you. Nanaimo is definitely such a community. It is so rewarding to share the love of music with others.”
The concerts with Nicholas Ross and the Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra take place:
In March, Mr. Ross will be performing with the Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra. He will play two pieces, one on the trumpet and one on the violin.

According to Mr. Ross, by playing musical instruments “you are able to find an ‘abstract voice’ which is completely different than [speaking in] words. Both instruments have such possibilities for deep expression. But it would be true to say that there are things that are particular to each instrument. The trumpet opens up the world of jazz, which I have always loved. The violin has a seemingly endless amount of incredible music to investigate.”
