Silly Boat Regatta 2020 will be missed History The inaugural Silly Boat Race took place in 1984. Four boats raced and $4,000 was raised. Nanaimo’s now fully established Silly Boat Race was originally conceived by Larry Hume and Darcy Rinald, news directors for CHUB radio. They created the fundraiser for the Show You Care Society, an organization that was supporting a child from Nanaimo to travel to the US to get a Kidney transplant. Eventually the Show you Care Society was successful in advocating and kidney transplants became available locally. The Society shut down but CHUB Radio decided to continue the event and select a new organization to benefit from the funds raised. The Silly Boat committee started looking for a local group to be the beneficiary of the race proceeds and the Nanaimo Child Development Centre became the new recipient of the Silly Boat Regatta. In 1998, The Nanaimo Child Development Centre became the sole organizers of the Regatta and with the assistance from its previous organizers, the event has continued to grow and raise much-needed funds for the Centre every year.

The Silly Boat Regatta is recognized as one of Nanaimo’s premier events with nearly 10,000 participants and spectators and over 200 volunteers annually. A major reason for the continued success of Silly Boat Regatta stems from all of the time and energy given by so many volunteers who lay the foundation for such a great community event. Our heartfelt thanks to all our committed volunteers, committee & businesses in our community who all help make this event happen. You all help in “Opening Doors” to children in our community – We could not do it without you. How funds are used: Funds raised at the event go directly to programs and equipment that support children and families in our community. Online donations: Donate directly on our secure server at www.nanaimocdc.com/ Donate Now button. We will miss the gathering of the community and all the smiles Silly Boat brings, mark your calendars for July 18, 2021 we look forward to a successful event next year and hope to see you all there. Thank you to our presenting sponsor, Shoreline Orthodontics for your continued support.

THINGS TO DO TO MARK HISTORY Right now we are living a very historical moment. Building a legacy or simple acts of kindness that help people stay connected through these times of separation is one of the things that will be reflected upon in the future.

TIME CAPSULE. Many families do these when there is a milestone in their life. Create a COVID-19 time capsule that includes a record of time and thoughts during a pandemic.

COLLECT MEMORANDUMS. Photos, poetry, games you played, a recipe that was popular or new, even some voice recordings. Personal goals, frustrations, fears and reflections. Anything that will tell the story of what way happening.

MAKE A 2020 CANADIAN FLAG. Create a flag that illustrates your community or your family during this time. Hang it from your house and encourage others to do the same.

RECORD STAGES. Husbands and wives, parents and children or by yourself, let’s face it the first month was like nothing we have experienced before. There were so many stages of mental breakdowns, drinking, eating, goal setting, dancing, colouring hair, and staying busy to block out some realities. Many lost track of what day it was, and what time of day it was, morning become night, night became day and so on. Record this with photos, videos, blogs, or stories.

MAKE A LEGACY. Decide on a contribution you want to make to the world or to your community or family. Simple acts of kindness is a good place to start.

TURN YOURSELF INSIDE OUT. Send a random someone something you have made with your resources together with something that is from your town.

Canadian author launches an epic troll-hunting adventure series inspired by the Norse Myths, the Icelandic Sagas, and the Canadian Rocky Mountains

Norse mythology which will delight lovers of history as well as longtime fans of fantasy.

One hundred ways there are to kill A troll if you but have the skill And yet a thousand ways to die For those who have a mind to try” -Proverbs of the Greyraven

An unspeakable sacrifice awaits Torin Ten-Trees and his closest companions, Bryn and Grimsa, as they set out to join The Gatewatch and become trollhunters. When a troupe of meddling dwarves throws them off course they are captured by trolls and taken as prisoners to a secret gathering deep underground. There they learn that an ancient giant has crowned himself king of the trolls and plans to utterly destroy The Gatewatch. Their perilous journey back to the land of sun and stars will stretch their strength to the limit, strain their wits, and demand a terrible sacrifice. But will it be enough to defeat the Troll King? Author Joshua Gillingham comes crashing into Canadian fiction scene with his debut novel, The Gatewatch. This quick-witted, fast-paced troll hunting saga is full of vexing riddles and packed with references to Viking culture and

“As riddlesome as Tolkien and a rollicking as Howard, The Gatewatch is a timeless tale from the heart of northern myth… Enchanting and enthralling in equal measure, the pages are infused with both the spirit of the Icelandic sagas and the fairytales of the Grimm’s. Try not to get eaten before sun up.” - Ian Stuarte Sharpe, Creator of the Vikingverse Books & Comics The Gatewatch is being published by Crowsnest Books in Toronto, Canada. It will be available at your local Chapters/ Indigo, select independent bookstores, and online at amazon.com as of May 17th, 2020.
