COVID 19 ANNOUNCEMENT

Every event comes from an idea and a need, and those things haven’t stopped for Whats On Digest. The last few weeks have flung society as we know it into a flurry of change and decision paralysis. From becoming sanitary servants, to the opportunist re-inventing themselves, the world has tipped and everyone is struggling to keep their footing. But some things never change, no matter what is happening around us. Humans are curious and resourceful creatures, when one door shuts we search for another to open, where opportunity exists we will venture towards it. Because our business has always been to bring people together in participation, and to build community through entertainment, fun activities and an abundance of life that is what we will continue to do. None of those things have changed. Over the next month, and maybe more we will capture some interesting, new things that people are doing to keep themselves and their virtual community entertained. We will share with you, the businesses that have pushed all the boundaries on ingenuity and are continuing to offer products and services. You will be able to continue following the What’s On Digest by subscribing to our newsletter or on our social media platforms. We look forward to keeping you connected. ~ Carolyn Sahlstrom, Victoria Publisher

As they sipped their whiskeys, the gentleman thought he’d humor the old man and asked, “So how many have you caught so far?” The old man replied, “You’re the eighth today.”

To Do in a global pandemic

Life as we know it has changed. At least for now. We’re pushing the boundaries on acceptable indoor body movement. We’re discovering new wonders in all too familiar places. We’re working on our inner habits and disciplines. So here’s a list of things to do to get active, have fun, and stay connected in the COVID 19 Crisis.

Check them off as you go.

And then send a photo or video to share with your local community at info@whatsondigest.com

THINGS TO DO ISOLATION EDITION TRIED & TRUE These classic rainy-day distractions can inspire nostalgia for any generation. Share memories with great-grandma while passing them down to the next generation.

Puzzle-Time. Jig-saw puzzels. Take. Time. But finishing one together is surprisingly satisfying. Find a surface that your can devote to daily construction and gather round to race for the finish OR let it unfold over days and weeks with everyone having a go whenever they pass by. Talent Show. What did kids do before Netflix, iPads and the Nintendo Switch while parents sat around the table chatting about boring stuff... They made skits, dramas, recitals and songs to put on show before getting sent to bed. And why should kids have all the fun? Table Hockey & Fooseball. These classic icons have been taking up 3-6 sqft of your spare room for long-enough! April 2020 is their moment to shine. Up the entertainment factor by picking a play-by-play announcer and a handy smart-phone video operator. Share your match on social media to supply your community with a hilarious replacement of the big-leagues.

Build A Fort. It’s fun AND educational! Explore, learn, and teach the kids about the engineering innovations, technicalities, and limitations of the perfect blanket/chair/couch/ cushion/mattress/lampshade combinations. Once you’ve established your cave-like shelter, plugin the fairylights, pop some pop-corn, unroll the sleeping bag, and find a movie on your phone or novel to read aloud and share a fortified night on the living room floor with your viral-survival buddies. Guess Who. The classic board game might not be in your posession. But you can play the game without the visual componenet by using characters everyone in your household is familiar. Pick a theme like your favourite books, TV shows, or extended family. Find a partner or go around in a circle answering yes or no questions until the name of every secret character is discovered.

Things

To Do in a global pandemic

Playing Cards. In the age of streaming media and online video games, classic card games are becoming a lost art. Hearts, Euchre, Cribbage, Rummy, Crazy 8s Down The Line, Cheat, Draw The Well Dry, Old Maid, President, Spoons, and our personal favourite, King Mao (or just Mao) are just a few. Ask your grandparents which card games they grew up with and rekindle a love for a plain olf deck of 52 playing cards. Schoolyard Handball. A largely forgotten game in Canada but still popular around the world. All you need is a tennis ball and an open cemented area like a garage or driveway. The concept is similar to volley ball or tennis. Use tape, chalk, or charcoal to mark the floor with contiguous squares; one foreach player. (appx 6ft x 6ft wide). Determin which square is the king, queen, jack, 10, etc. Use your hand as a racquet to bounce the ball in your square toward your opponent’s square. They must bounce it back to an opponent with only one bounce allowed per square. If a player misses the ball or if the ball bounces more than once in their square, they switch places with the person in the next lower square. (E.g. A person in the king square switches with the person in the queen square. The person in the queen square switches places with the person in the Jack square.) The champion of this game is a person that starts in the lowest square, switches all the way up to the king square, and can not be switched out of it.

HIDE AND HUNT Adults and kids and can try these creative spins on the classic family favourite, ‘Hide & Go Seek.’ Photo-fig Hunt. Hide figurines peeking out from conspicuous places around your house and yard. Using your smart phone to take a cryptic snapshot for every figuring your hide, revealing only the most subtle surrounding details. If you have a wide age gap between participants, designate

specific figurines/hiding places to specific ages. Show the photos to everyone so they know what they’re looking for and let the games begin. When more advanced players find figurines designated to beginners, start a game of hotter-colder to help the beginners out.

Ugly Trinket Caching. Find that small, ugly trinket your 8 year old nephew purchased for your birthday at a garage sale 2 years ago and take turns with a partner to hide it somewhere in your partner’s everyday routine. Check on it every now and then. When it goes missing, it’s your turn to search. When you find it, hide it again and wait for it to go missing. This game doesn’t have to stop after your isolation. Some claim to have kept it alive for years.

Fortune Caching. Elevate morale with the same snippet of satisfaction found in a fortune cookie. Only with the added intruige of a Treasure Hunt. Start by writing inspirational quotes, love notes, or existential axioms on tiny post it notes or sticky labels. Then hide those lables in your house and yard (draws, cupboards, under-tables, behind blinds, the inner edge of a door) to inspire your fellow in-mates. You may be stumbling upon them for years to come!

WILD AT HEART Isolation can feel like a cage if your like to release animal the inner-beast. Here’s a few ideas to give your animal-side some air-time.

13

Fashion Show/Dance Party. Setup your living room with a cat-walk, lamp-shade spotlights, and party decor. Crank those party tunes and set your smolder from stun to kill. When everyone has had a chance to show off their choice of evening robes (pyjamas, ball-gowns, animal costumes.) Form a circle and copy each others wildest dance moves. DYI Photobooth. Before the front-facing camera, arcade style photobooths furnished the isles of malls and tourist traps. Make your own by experimenting with bed-sheet backgrounds and lamp-shade lighting. Cram as many people in as you can, and take 18 photos of suprise poses and silly faces WITHOUT looking at the screen. (It’s not about looking good. It’s about capturing the moment.) Pro-tip: Use an app like ‘Layout from Instagram’ to create that old photobooth look.

A New Un-do. If you’ve got no-where to go, and no-one to impress... Give your captive audience a laugh by doing something crazy with your hair. Try a ridiculous colour. Trying cutting your hair yourself. Put those corsair clippers to work.

Glow-splosion. Glow-ups are for highschool reunions and wanna-be insta-celebrities. Add some dynamite to your make-up routine and maybe allow an extra 2 or 4 hours to cake your face with an inordinate amount of colour, contouring, lash enhancing and just random ornamentation. And this one doesn’t have to be just for the ladies!

Rubiks Cube Dinner | 1for1 Version. Have a dinner night where each participant comes dressed in a combination of red, green, blue, yellow, orange, or white. (You don’t need every colour.) Each player throws the dice, the one with the highest score can request a piece of clothing from each player until you are dressed all in the same colour. Use, hats, gloves, t’shirts, jackets, shoes, socks. The first person with every available colour wins! Rubiks Cube Dinner | Team Version. Plan a week of dinners where every participant comes where only one colour; red, green, blue, yellow, orange, or white. (You don’t need every colour.) But DO NOT discuss who is wearing which colour. Co-ordinate your outfit and dress IN PRIVATE! You win the night when everyone comes dressed in a different colour. Pro-tip: Use black or denim to substitute for clothing that doesn’t match your colour scheme.

CHALLENGE YOURSELF If you need to push ahead to feel alive, try these challenges to test your limits.

Things

To Do

northernbushcraft.com to learn individually, with family, or other room-mates.

in a global pandemic

Inside Unplugged. Find your breaker panel and start switching. See how long you can last at home with no electricity. Candles for light, backyard fire-pits for hot meals. And nothing but your hands and eyes for entertainment. Battle of the Books. Connect with some bookworms at home or online and establish your personal goals. 3 books a month? 1 book a week? 5 books a day. Each person pledging to their own goal for the next 30 days. Include the title of each book in your commitment to keep things fair. Now divide the number of books you’ve committed to by 1000. (E.g. 1000 5 books = 200 points per book.) The first person to reach 1000 points wins the battle! Cheer each other on by sharing your discoveries from each chapter as you go.

Learn a Survival Skill. There is an abundance of water, proteins, nutrition, and minerals available in our Vancouver Island forests. Learning what is safe and what will keep you alive is a skill that every individual can/should know. Knots, tricks, and basic machines can also make the difference between life and death in a survival situation. Research information online at sites like

Learn How To Code. COVID 19 has emphasized the benefits of digital technology. Update your skills in the new digital workforce by investing your time in a free or inexpensive programming course like on Youtube or Lynda.com. All you need to start is access to the internet. If you don’t know where to begin Try learning HTML. Then CSS. Then try Ruby on Rails, Python and Javascript. Learn How To Draw or Paint. Draw cartoons, paint by numbers, learn henna art, paint your walls, draw a portrait. There are lots of tutorials online. Who know’s you might be good discover a hidden talent. (You can start by checking out bobross.com)

Start A Memoir. Begin or end every day with a few words in a notebook or worddoc about a moment you remember. Start with a brief description about events and your actions. Then write down every sense you can recall; sights, sounds, smells and textures. Then try to record the emotions you

felt; happy, sad, angry, proud, embarrased, etc. It will be hard at first but gets easier every time. Push through the wall when you feel like giving up the habit. You’re saving yourself and others thousands of dollars in mental health therapy! Dance Endeavour. The 80s 90s and 00s will go down in history as a moment when dancing ALMOST flatlined (props to b-boys and flashmobs.) But Gen-Z is picking up the batton with new dance-moves sweeping the globe everyday. And the best place to find them is on the Tiktok app. Search for Oh Na Na Na, C-Walk , Renegade, Number One Baby, 7 Rings, Get Up, The Box, Don’t Start Now / Full 180, Say So, Vibe- Cookie Kawaii, Out West, Gimme Some, Til the Morning. Hide & Go Seek. You know it. Because it’s fun. And it work. Everyone hides while one person counts to 30 with eyes closed. When finished they announce “Ready or not, here I come!” Everyone stays as quiet as possible to avoid getting found, or being heard as they sneak around.

Hide & Go Seek Tag. If you have a large property, you can use the thrill of Hide & Go Seek to inspire some exercise. It’s the exact same principle only when a hider sense they might soon be found, they can run away. The seeker only wins once all hiders have been tagged. Murder in the Dark. All you need is the lights off and a flash light. Players are hiding and can continue moving around secretly until they are seen with the flashlight.

it will hold its shape as one solid object ready for painting. Pro-tip: Once you get the mixture and layering technique down, try experiementing with advanced sculptures. Driftwood Creations. Find an unpopulated beach (there’s plenty around) and collect some driftwood to make shapes and animals. Use wood screws and glue to create permanent sculptures for the yard and home decor. You will be surprised how quick and easy this is. Check out local artist Alex Whitcomb online for ideas.

Pet Bearding. No, we’re not talking about pet grooming. Pet bearing includes an optical illusion that you can make when photographing you and your pet together. The illusion works when the photo captures your pet’s nose and chin as they look back toward you so that your eyes are directly behind their nose and chin. The effect results in a nose, mouth and furry beard on the bottom half of your human head. It’s hilarious. Post your photo online and tag What’s On Digest to share it with your community.

CRAFTY CREATIONS Put your right brain to work and get innovative and artistic with the resources at your disposal. Shape & Paint with Paper Mache. Flour, paper, water and white glue is all you need to get started. (Find advanced recipes online.) Mix it all together and start layering the paper around an interesting hollow object, like a balloon or carboard shapes. Once dry,

Build Planter Boxes. Use any old wood laying around the yard to make a raised garden for dfresh herbs right in time for Mother’s Day. The perfect opportunity to bond over some essential life skills.

VENTURE OUTSIDE Here on Van Isl, we’re lucky to be surrounded by sparsely populated natural beauty. Enjoy it without becoming a burden on emergency services. Jump on Wheels. You’ve never had a better excuse to get your knack back and make time for exercise. Rollerblading, Skateboarding, cycling. There are plenty of open places to do this while keeping a safe distance. Safety Tip: Wear protective gear and avoid risky terrain to ensure an accident doesn’t unnecessarily burden the health care system.

Plant Vegetables. It’s the perfect time to prepare the vegetable garden. Now more than ever we understand the importance of being self sufficient, teach your kids and yourself which vegetables to grow when, what natural fertilizers do we have around the house, and how to space vegetables when planting. Launch a webpage for family or friends. Family members and volunteer groups can use them to share photo albums, news and record milestones. And building a webpage is MUCH EASIER than it used to be. Spending a day setting up a free webpage can help keep people connected, and memories alive. For photo albums try the Instagram app, Tublr. com, or Flickr.com to add endless photos with captions. For news and milestones try wix. com, squarespace.com, or wordpress.com Separate the Trash and Treasure. Dig out the antiques, and forgotten trash and treasures. Set aside the clutter that belongs at the dump. And create spaces to store your treasures with respect. Antique dealers can be contacted online for a one on one consultation to help you put a value on special items. Start by calling a dealer in your city.

Waterfall Chasing. A perfect way to get out in rainy weather and enjoy Vancouver Island wonders from inside your car. Mark known waterfalls on a map and head out to see what surprise off-streams the rainclouds have produced. Highway 4 and Highway 28 are especially exciting! Trench Race. Find an unpopulated beach (there’s plenty around) with sandy shores to create a canal of trackwork winding down the sandy slope with a shallow pit at the end. Release a handful of marbles at the top of the track to see which one makes it to the

Felting: Dig up some of that wool laying around. Needle felting has begun, by rolling up a small amount of wool and stabbing it with the felting needle. When the wool is stabbed it pulls the wool into itself. By stabbing the wool with the needle over and over while turning the wool it continues to pull and lock together and forming a shape. Order from your local craft or yarn stores.

Garden Rock Painting: Pick up some of the smooth rocks laying around the yard and on the beaches. Break out the paint and start painting faces or rock pets for the garden. They make a great speaking piece. Make a Bug Hotel: You can create a sort of condo hotel by using a wooden box or cut a 2ltr plastic bottle. Gardening Basics for Beginners

There are so many easy and fun ways to spend time in your garden. It’s not only therapeutic, but can be enjoyed by every member of the family. If your gardens are restricted to balconies or patios, don’t worry, there’s lots that can be grown. And, as it happens, our first segment will be on “container” gardening with veggies, herbs, berries. Spring is prime planting time… so grab a bucket, some soil, a few seeds, or a variety of veggie starts - and we’ll get started.

Mixed Planter: Lettuce is one of the easiest veggies to grow in a planter. Soon after planting you will be harvesting fresh salads! Different varieties of leafy lettuce can be planted together for a long harvesting time. When the lettuce leaves are big enough, just pluck as many of the outer leaves you need and the rest will keep growing.

whatsondigest.com | APRIL 2020

Herbs (drought tolerant, and mostly deer resistant) are another easy pot to put together. You can plant up to 5 herbs in a 14” pot for year long harvest! Be sure to water daily during the heat of the summer.

Window boxes are a great for planting an assortment of veggies, fruits and even some flowers! A great mix of companion plants will ensure success. Try lettuce, green onions, and strawberries together. As well, you can add a couple of marigolds to keep aphid (Little bugs) away. Hint: A pot of mint near by will help deter the slugs from your planter. Larger pots – 14” wide or more: Tomatoes - 1 per pot. An average sized tomato would prefer a nice deep pot, such as a 5 gallon bucket. If you have a pot larger than that... Fantastic! Try growing a cherry tomato or plum tomato as they are very vigorous and very heavy producers! It’s the perfect “first” tomato plant. If you are limited for space, then look for a dwarf tomato variety. We have some new and tasty varieties that will be available in April. There are some new, tasty varieties that will be available soon!

28

whatsondigest.com | APRIL 2020

Blueberries: 1 per pot Berry production is better with 2 different varieties. Blueberries need to be planted in a peat rich soil. This helps retain moisture keeping plants happy.

Larger pots – 14” wide or more continued: Pole beans and pole peas Plant 3 clusters of plants per pot. Poke 3 bamboo poles evenly into the perimeter of the pot and tied at the top. This creates a simple trellis that your beans will love to climb! Enjoy beans all season! Cucumbers do very well in a pot. Try miniature varieties such as Cuccino, Piccolino or Patio Snacker. Loads of tasty small cukes for the summer. Be sure to keep cucumber plants evenly moist to avoid that bitter taste.

Hanging Baskets: Tomatoe Baskets Did you know you can have Trailing cherry tomatoes basket? Tumbler and cherry falls are two tasty varieties. Strawberries Varieties such as Eversweet, Fort Laramie or Quinault will produce tasty berries all season long.

MONEY IN YOUR POCKET

Trash to Cash......... Rags to Riches......... Lemons into Lemonade......... We have all heard those phrases at some point in our lives.

While in isolation we become board.

Why now and how does affect me you ask?

I don’t know about you, but I normally do not have much free time so I end up having to do my cleaning and appointments on my two days off a week.

Well, in these uncertain times that we are now facing, most of us are in self isolation trying not to spread or catch the virus.

Trying to find things to do to past the time.

However, at the moment while we are in self isolation, I actually have had time to clean my whole house, re-organize the garage and do large amounts of baking and cooking to share with my family, friends & neighbours. What I am finding is that I can take my time, I am actually looking at things differently.

whatsondigest.com | APRIL 2020

37

I am not just trying to quickly tidy. I am actually going through bins and boxes. Getting rid of things. When I say “getting rid of thing” this is where turning my “trash into cash” comes into play. My name is Lynne and with my partner Vic, we own and operate The Old Attic on East Saanich Road in Central Saanich. We have been in business since 2011. Our business has now grown into one of the top consignment shops on the island. We have people come from all over to not only consign with us, but to shop.

38

whatsondigest.com | APRIL 2020

We see the most amazing things come into our shop on a daily basis. I just wanted to give you a few ideas on what to look for when sorting through your things or how to give new life to an old beat up piece of furniture. I will share a couple of fun stories on items that were going to be put into the trash by the owner only to find out they had a very special item on their hands. Something we were able to sell for them and make them some money. We unfortunately live in a day and age of just tossing things away when they are broken or worn out.

We all have such busy lives that we just do not have the time to spare fixing things up. It is so much easier just to throw it in the trash. Well you may want to think twice about what you are throwing away. Here is a prime example: We were called to a house to help a lady go through her late husbands collection of old models of ships, airplanes, trains and so much more. Her place was full of so many collectables. She was totally over whelmed by his collections that she now had to deal with, hence the call to us.

whatsondigest.com | APRIL 2020

39

Amongst these items was a small collection of radios.

breath new life into this items.

I believe they were going into the trash or she was going to give them away.

You can sand it down and restain it.

Having worked with Sony for many years, Vic spotted something very special. It happened to be one of the first Sony Radios exported to Canada. Long story short, once back at the shop, I cleaned it up and we sold it to a collector within 24 hours for $1,100.00. When you go through your treasures, you want to look at the condition. If it’s bad enough that time or even money cannot fix it, then toss it. Just get rid of these types of items. If you have a little piece of furniture that may be marked up but you just do not have the heart to toss it out, there are a few ways that you can

If it is not to bad, you can use a product that we sell at the shop that we just love. We use it on all furniture pieces that come in the shop just to make them pop again. It is called Restore A Finish. However, if the wood is dried out, I would use Feed & Wax. Here is a little story with the Restore A Finish & Feed and Wax. We had a gal that had been consigning with us since we opened in 2011. This gal actually introduced us to the “Howard Products” which includes the Feed and Wax, Restore A Finish and many other products.

40

whatsondigest.com | APRIL 2020

The gal was bringing in the last of her antiques for us to consign for her. There were many wonderful pieces that we had sold for her over the years. We were sad to see the end of them but at least she had many with her this day. After unloading everything, she brought in this beautiful little table. Unfortunately it was dirty and so dried up it was a grey color. It was so dry that you could lift this piece with one finger. It was light as a feather. I mentioned to her that we do not take items in this condition.

After I cleaned it up one day I made a decision to use Mahogany Restore A Finish on it just to see if I could bring back some color to this piece. I was shocked how how lovely the color was. Basically the restore A Finish just enhances what you already have. I think I put on about 3 - 4 coats of this product. The more coats you put on the darker it becomes. Of course being so dry it was just soaking it up. Once I was satisfied with the color I had to address the dryness issue. This is where Feed and Wax comes in. Feed and Wax conditions your wood products.

She said to put it next to our Cottage paints and throw $10.00 on it as someone could buy it and paint it.

Over a course of four days I kept applying Feed and Wax and I used about 3/4 of the large bottle.

The little table actually sat next to my desk for the next five days or so.

I could see this piece not only looking so much better but it was also becoming heavier.

I kept looking at it over those days and I could see what a lovely little table it was.

After five days I ended up with this stunning little table that sold in about a week for $185.00.

Originally this would have been a piece that you would possibly have used in a hallway.

It was an antique that was brought back to life with with a little bit of love.

whatsondigest.com | APRIL 2020

Needless to say when the gal came to pick up her consignment cheque for that month, she could not remember giving me a little table. When I told what table it was and what I had done to it, she was surprised and thrilled as she loves her antiques. So don’t throw out a nice little piece of furniture just because you think it is not worth fixing. It may be beyond staining or wax etc so this is when you may want think think of painting. I prefer to leave pieces as natural as possible however, there are times when painting is the only solution. We are one of the only stores around the Victoria - Sidney area that sells Cottage Paint. This is a great product. Being a clay based paint it is very easy to use. Plus distressing is a breeze as you just wipe with a damp rag. There are so many people talented people that have discovered painting furniture. Believe me when I say, you do not have to be talented to used Cottage Paint. It is very unforgiving. Other things that sell well in our shop are Vintage Vinyl Records. Can you believe it? It has all made a big come back. We have a very large vintage vinyl collection and we also have some serious collectors that come in on a regular basis looking for that one record to complete their collection. So if you have vinyl records, put those aside as well. Along with Vintage Vinyl, record players/ Turntables are in high demand. Speakers as well. Give us a call and talk to Douglas as he is our record specialist.

41

Collectables are another thing to look for when digging through those boxes. Medals, cigarette items, old vintage tins and anything to do with old cars seem to be sought after. Licence plates are also collected by many people. Comic books, beer signage, vintage lighting, tea cups and saucers and vintage kitchenware are among other items people look for when in at the shop. Funky furniture or anything retro seems to be in demand these days. Teak is a big seller but again, condition is important. Vintage and antique tools are very popular as well. There are so many amazing items that you may think are worthless. Stop and have a good look at that item in your hand that you are about to throw away. Is this something with a story? Can you see it as a display item in someones home or business? Can you bring some life back into that piece of furniture with little effort? If the answer is yes, bring it to us and we will do our best to turn your trash into cash. I will tell you this, once you sell your first few pieces that have been sitting in a box for ages, you will be asking yourself, why have I not done this earlier? You will then be looking around your house to sell anything that is not nailed down. Enjoy the hunt as the reward is just around the corner. RockCoast is a local Vancouver Island business that specializes in delicious handmade all natural chocolates and confections. RockCoast confections provide high quality sweets and allow people to treat themselves or others to something truly special using the highest quality ingredients. Rock Coast works hard to purchase local ingredients as much as possible to support other businesses in the community. Amber, owner of RockCoast was born and raised on Vancouver Island B.C. Her first job at a small restaurant was the start of it all and where she developed her love of food. As the restaurant grew into a thriving hot spot, Amber took advantage to learn everything she could about food. The next 10 years in the restaurant trade brought her many culinary skills ,gave her an opportunity to meet great people and then put herself through University to become a Certified Veterinary. Most often this meant working at an animal clinic by day and restaurant by night. Her work as a Veterinary Technician led her to South America to volunteer spaying and neutering animals. Upon Amber's return she combined her love for animals with opening Rock Coast Confections, making delicious treats that bring smiles to faces and use partial proceeds from each box to support stray animals. Amber's travels showed her the much needed help to provide better veterinary care and supplies for stray, sick and injured animals. RockCoast allows to her purchase medical supplies and volunteer time. The hope is that this support will increase quality of life for animals and enable a higher level of veterinary care. RockCoast is Amber's labour of love and passion. WE CURRENTLY OFFER TAKE OUT, DELIVERY AND SHIPPING ACROSS CANADA WWW.ROCKCOAST.CA 107-1753 Sean Heights, Saanichton BC 778-351-3311

A Message from Beacon Ridge Productions: Dear friends and music lovers, We're reaching out to let you know that we are thinking of you and hope this finds you well. Moments of great uncertainty do two things: they call on our resolve to face the challenge and make us take stock of what's most important. Now is undoubtedly the time to focus on our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being as well as our loved ones and our neighbours. Under normal circumstances, we’d be working on welcoming new artists to Victoria, presenting them in concert, excited for you to hear their beautiful music. From the moment we made the decision to “go dark,” cancel all upcoming shows and refund all ticket holders, our focus shifted to supporting the amazing artists whose shows we had to cancel and that have been so negatively impacted by this pandemic. The music community is suffering, not just presenters, but also the artists who make a living and support their families by touring and performing. We would like to invite you to visit their websites and learn about their projects, many are finding creative ways to stay connected, including live-streaming concerts right from their homes. You can help them out by buying their CDs, downloading their songs, as well as liking and sharing their social media pages and posts. We are fortunate that we have the capacity to engage with artists virtually, so let’s explore what it means to be a community in a time of social distancing. If you’re on Facebook we also encourage you to visit our page www.Facebook.com/BeaconRidgeProductions for news, videos, music links and other updates. We look forward to sharing news and videos of artists we’ve presented in the past as well as many we love and hope to present in the future. Please check back often and be sure to share the ways you’re staying grounded and connected.

We look forward to seeing you soon! Marie & Adrien Bachand

The Creative Humanizing Project (CHP) is a new non-profit in Victoria, dedicated to creative public safety initiatives and solutions, as well as including the voices of those affected by such issues at the forefront of the conversation. The three ladies (Brianna Green, Sam Redmond and Audrey Ruether ) were inspired to create this organization after volunteering their time in a Federal Prison, they quickly learned the needs of the individuals reintegrating back into the community and realized they were all passionate about the same initiatives and began the work to form the Creative Humanizing Project (CHP). creativehumanizingproject@gmail.com To learn more visit them on Facebook or Instagram @creativehumanizingproject New website coming soon at www.creativehumanizingproject.com
