Cape Otway Lightstation This iconic Cape Otway Lighthouse stands 90 meters tall and has been the Beacon of Hope for ships since 1848. Hundreds of lives were lost in shipwrecks off Cape Otway, a sad but fascinating history which led to the building of the Lightstation in the foothills of the impenetrable forests of the Otways. Cape Otway Lighthouse is the highlight of the Great Ocean Road where with a short detour through magnificent forests, much koala life can be seen. The “Kidzone” activity program is fun and exciting for all primary school aged children. The gourmet café features an historic photo gallery and video room. Australia’s first submarine cable link was laid between Cape Otway and Launceston in 1859. The Telegraph Station has been meticulously restored and a radar bunker, built in 1942 after a United States ship was sunk by a German mine off Cape Otway, has been newly renovated. The Lightstation precinct is the traditional home of the Gadabanud people. Discover more about this isolated, but resourceful Aboriginal clan. The Ships That Shaped Australia exhibition Don’t miss this exhibition of 27 paintings of vessels that sailed into our history books. Each of the large scale works were painted by the late Jack L Koskie and capture the high drama of early shipping in Australia including the Loch Ard which was wrecked in 1878 trying to sight the Cape Otway light, the HMS Investigator which surveyed Australian waters under the command of Matthew Flinders, SS Casino which was wrecked at Apollo Bay in 1932 and HMAS Sydney, famous for her battle with the German vessel Emden in 1914, just to name a few. Lightstation manager Trish Goodlet said “Cape Otway had real links with some of the vessels portrayed and this exhibition which gives locals and tourists further insight into our amazing maritime history, which the Lightstation is very keen to promote and preserve”. Lighthouse tours are held daily from 9am - 5pm and entry to the exhibition is free with Lighthouse entry. P 5237 9240 • lightstation.com

The Gordon Engineering Program Bring your ideas to life at The Gordon
Learn some new skills with a short course.
The Engineering department at The Gordon isn’t just a place for manufacturing with the latest CNC machines, lathes and welding, it’s now a well-known space for creative flair, art and sculpture...
Short courses at The Gordon are a fantastic way to build on your existing skills or learn something new.
A five-week sculpture welding course proved so successful when it was introduced in 2015, it is now held several times per year. With each new course comes an array of new projects, new faces and new interests emerging in this traditionally male-dominated field. Welding certainly isn’t a new art form, it was increasingly used in sculpture in the 1930s and with unique artwork and garden sculpture creations still on-trend today, there remains an increasing amount of enthusiasts pursuing their own designs and projects. The Gordon’s Engineering Program Manager, Rory McNamara, said it has been great to welcome new groups of learners into the department with a fun, creative and productive focus. “The sculpture welding course is designed to be a non-intimidating learning environment where we encourage participants to bring their ideas, sketches and design vision so we can give each person the skills to create their own unique pieces. We’ve seen some fantastic projects come together so far.” The next sculpture welding course commences on Wednesday 19 April and classes are held each week at The Gordon’s East Campus (Boundary Road), from 5:30pm. The course fee is $450 which includes workbook, use of equipment, all materials and tuition. Be quick to reserve your place in the next course as places are limited to ten students per class. Abstraction: celebrating Australian women abstract artists until 7 May 2017
Seaview Gallery Autumn at Seaview Gallery As the seasons change so do the exhibitions at Seaview Gallery. Treat yourself with a wander through the gallery in April. 8-30 April Robert Holcombe Solo Exhibition In the year 2000, Robert received national and international awards for his work titled ‘Cry of the Wilderness’ in the Winsor & Newton Worldwide Millennium Painting Competition, which attracted over 22500 entries from 51 countries and was presented in London by Prince Charles. Robert sees the landscape in terms of line, form, color and space. His abstract landscapes are a statement of the beauty and harshness yet fragility, of this untamed land. His work explores the essence of the surface, framework and underlay of landscape rather than dealing with specifics. For the viewer this will mean many more metaphoric possibilities to consider. Robert considers his works to be earthy and primal with a strong environmental statement. Easter Show Easter showcases a wonderfully diverse range from all our artists with a wide range of stunning new glass from James McMurtrie and ceramics from Ann-Maree Gentile. Luminous relic - 8 April to 9 July Luminous relic will present a major new collaborative painting and moving image work by artists Mandy Martin and Alexander Boynes, together with a score by Tristen Parr and performance by Laura Boynes. Luminous relic will be based on fieldwork in Geelong and specifically the Geelong Refinery. Martin’s and Boynes’ work will continue their collaborative examination of the ongoing and cumulative effects of industry on landscapes, fragile ecosystems and human conditions. Luminous relic is Geelong Gallery’s contribution to ART+CLIMATE=CHANGE 2017, organised by CLIMARTE—an independent charity that aims to create a strong arts voice to join with other concerned citizens in calling for immediate, effective and creative action to secure a safe future for humankind and for all life on Earth. Metropolis Gallery 6 – 22 April Ludmilla Meilerts: Melbourne Paintings 1950–1980 Opening Night Thursday 6 April, 6 – 8pm Metropolis Gallery in association with the art estate of Ludmilla Meilerts (1908–1997) is excited to make available selected paintings of Melbourne from between the 1950s and 1980s. After arriving in Australia from post-war Europe in 1948, Meilerts turned her focus to the heart of mid-century Melbourne. She made it's back streets and waterways an important part of her work and the colour and vitality of her urban paintings brought a European art sensibility that set her apart from other Australian artists of the time, instilling in her work a unique expression of her new homeland. The National Gallery of Victoria soon purchased one of her paintings and within two years had acquired another, with many public galleries
following suit. In the inaugural 1950 Dunlop Art Prize (at the time the richest national award in Australia) Meilerts shared fifth prize with Fred Williams. First prize Sidney Nolan, second William Frater, Arthur Boyd third and Charles Bush and Len Annois sharing fourth. She was a Dunlop Prize finalist again in 1951, 1952, 1953 and 1954, placing Ludmilla alongside some of the foremost artists of the time. Ludmilla Meilerts is represented in many Australian private and public collections including the National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of NSW, Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, Art Gallery of Western Australia. Geelong and the region is fast becoming a mecca for all things gastronomic. The Café scene continues to thrive and expand, with every café offering individuality both in taste and décor and creativity in both, in literal abundance. Restaurants tick the box for every budget and taste preference, and seem to just keep getting better in everything they do.
This region is renowned for its amazing local produce and where do we start with our wine and cider options….sublime to say the least. Innovation and Individuality seem to be the cornerstone of every new business that greets us, as well as a firm belief in providing as much local as possible. The end result being a food scene that is contemporary, innovative, fresh and interesting and we literally can’t seem to get enough of it.
Flying Brick Cider House If you haven’t already been, this retro inspired landmark venue is definitely calling. Think innovate space, a tasting paddle of ciders, amazing food without the ‘fancy’, the best Bellarine wines around, a solid selection of beer, Friday night live music which traces the roots of rock, soul, rhythm and blues and you’ll get an inkling of what to expect – fabulous, funky, fun. Flying Brick Cider Co was launched on The Bellarine six years ago, a first for this region. The quirky name comes from the Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoo whose local nick name is ‘Flying Brick’. Known for their spunk, these birds are loved for their happy, playful and seemingly ‘naughty’ appearance and disposition. Flying Brick ciders are traditionally crafted from 100% fresh fruit. They contain no sugars, colours, flavourings or concentrates. Today, Flying Brick Cider is one of the fastest growing boutique ciders in Australia with distribution moving across Victoria, Queensland and South Australia. In addition to the three classic and highly awarded Flying Brick Cider offerings – Original, Pear and Draught - the on-site cidery is continually crafting boutique seasonal batches from fresh, seasonal fruit. Patrons can also grab a hip 1.89 litre ‘Growler’ of their favourite cider to take home, enjoy then return for a discounted replacement Growler of any on tap cider, including the latest boutique batch on the pour. Executive Chef, Dwayne Bourke has designed a contemporary and distinctively different menu designed to inspire, share and indulge. Local produce and community group partnerships are both key features. Open seven days a week 10am – 5pm for lunch and guided tastings. Dinner Friday and Saturday nights. Lighthouse Olive Oil Shop Come along and taste farm produced and processed extra virgin olive oil, straight from the trees to your taste buds. With the classic cool climate providing a distinct Victorian coastal character, the oils are versatile in taste and vary in their degrees of fruitiness. The main varieties on offer are Picual, Arbequinia, Manzanillo, Frantoio, Leccino, Coratina and Koroneiki. There are also three varieties of citrus oils that are delicious as an addition to any salad. The growing methods utilized are based on being environmentally sustainable and support the wildlife habitats of Australian plants and animals. All oils are extracted within hours of harvesting, ensuring purity and freshness. All waste products from the production of the oils are recycled on the property. The trees are harvested in the winter months by a mechanical shaker with smaller trees handpicked. Olives are then processed immediately to retain their freshness. Once the oil is extracted it is stored in stainless steel tanks to let the oil settle naturally. The oil is then stored in a temperature controlled environment until bottling. As well as offering oil tastings, the shop also stocks olive oil body care products and soaps, gourmet pantry items, Oakdene wines, potted olive trees and great gift ideas. Visitors are also welcome to wander through the Kalamata olive grove adjacent to the shop. 50 acres of vines are being planted for Oakdene Wines, so come down and enjoy the ever changing landscape. The shop is easy to locate, only a short drive from Drysdale, Portarlington, Queenscliff and Ocean Grove.
