EDITOR

If you’re heading out of town, why not go by sea? Searoad Ferries is a great way to travel and with an ice-skating rink sitting all winter long on the Sorrento foreshore, what a great day out for the family. Alternatively Port Phillip Ferries is a far more enticing alternative to sitting in traffic, if heading to Melbourne. So why not grab the kids for a day of exploration and enjoyment of all that’s on offer in this vast city.

This month celebrates a well-earned break for our little people, with the July school holidays kicking off from the 1st July. And our ‘Kids on the Go ‘section this month is literally bursting with so much variety and guaranteed fun to be had for the kids, and a promised reprieve for Mum! Supatramp is the place for kids to jump, flip, fly and climb their way over the school holiday period and beyond. It is without doubt, one of Geelong’s premium child friendly, fun zones and is a must do with the tribe these holidays.

National Wool Museum is currently exhibiting their annual Scarf Festival offering a vast display of creative scarves based on this year’s theme ‘Galaxies – A textile journey to infinity and beyond’. This is also a great venue for the kids to enjoy, interact and explore, so a definite must do for the whole family. Well the school holiday leisure schedule is now well sorted for the family – so do enjoy! Have a wonderful July. The team at What's On Magazine

The Rock Adventure Centre is fun with a fitness feel that the whole family can enjoy. Open from 12pm, seven days a week with supervised climbing sessions offered over the school holidays between 2 - 4pm. The Rock also offers during school term, a ‘Climb-It-Club’ for primary school aged children. A great way for kids to improve fitness and co-ordination.

Eastern Hub Geelong Karingal St Laurence Business Enterprises (BE) include event and corporate catering, Season’s cafés, services for business in document management, laundry, warehouse and packaging solutions providing real work opportunities to people with a disability. Ari (pictured above) works at The Otway Kitchen in Colac, one of multiple hospitality sites within Karingal St Laurence BE, and loves her role as the “baking mentor”. “I teach people all the different skills,” Ari said. “They’re really good at cracking the eggs and their folding skills and sieving.” She is just one example of the hundreds of supported employees finding work through Karingal St Laurence’s commercial enterprises. Karingal St Laurence BE is an Australian Disability Enterprise, an organization that, with some government assistance, provides supported employment opportunities to people with a disability within a commercially viable operation. It allows employees to develop employment and workplace skills, as well as providing them with opportunities to achieve social and economic inclusion in the community. The Botanic Café on the Lake in Colac, is an integral part of the Karingal St Laurence family. Carly has worked at the café for four years as a waitress and her favorite part of the day is chatting to the customers, “Because I do talk a lot!” she says. Recently, supported employees from Karingal St Laurence BE Colac sites came together for a bus tour to Geelong sites to see the different types of work available in the organization. “The purpose of the bus tour was to introduce the Colac and Geelong employees so they get to have experiences with meeting new people in a new environment,” said Georgie Knight, General Manager of Karingal St Laurence Business Enterprises. This year’s winner of the National Wool Museum’s Scarf Festival is Karina Irvine from Christie’s Beach, South Australia with a creation titled Trappist 1, made from felt. National Wool Museum Director Padraic Fisher said the number of entries were increasing each year, with the overall winner this year chosen from a field of 298 entries. “The number and quality of entries for the Scarf Festival just gets bigger and better each year, such is the strength of craft in Australia,” he said. The overall winner was selected from the winner of 10 individual categories, including colour, knitted, felt and menswear, with categories for entries from primary and secondary school students. This year’s theme Galaxies: a textile journey to infinity and beyond, asked scarf makers to take inspiration from the galaxy and let the cosmos be the guide to finding inspiration amongst the stars. The winning design is made of merino wool, silk and tinsel and was inspired by Trappist-1, an ultra-cool dwarf star and its seven orbiting planets.

Two entries from the Geelong region were awarded in their nominated categories. Pa Neh Htoo from Geelong won the Woven category with her Karen scarf. In the 100 Per cent Wool category, Jo Bagge from Portarlington was highly commended for her Moonwalk scarf. Other local region winners came from Torquay, Jan Juc, Bellbrae and Anglesea. Three judges picked the winners including TV personality Catriona Rowntree, along with Executive Director Craft Victoria Richard Ferguson and Scienceworks Melbourne Planetarium Manager and Senior Curator - Astronomy Dr Tanya Hill. The scarves including the winning entries are now on display at the National Wool Museum until 27 August. A full list of the winning entries is available at www.geelongaustralia.com.au/nwm For further details please visit: www.nwm.vic.gov.au P 5272 4701 26 Moorabool Street, Geelong

They have a reputation for bringing premium live music to the city. Their venue is ideal for a wide range of acts from modern-day indie bands, with niche followings to Australia’s long and established iconic groups. The Wool Exchange has a rich history in Geelong and a rich history in the city’s music scene. Locally owned and operated, the owners have worked hard to build an enviable reputation for their cafe, function rooms and wedding receptions in Geelong and while they are important elements of the business, live music continues to be a headline act at The Wool Exchange. Check out the website for a list of event details of coming shows or phone for information. The imposing building that houses The Wool Exchange Entertainment Complex was built in 1927-28 and was a centre piece of the wool industry, which thrived throughout western Victoria in this era. What is now the upstairs split level function room, was once the venue where wool traders bought and sold their wares during public auctions. The auditorium had steep, ramped seating, that is now long gone, although the original barrel vaulted ceiling decorated with neo-Greco detail remains and adds to the grandeur and acoustics of the room. Cape Otway Lightstation This iconic Cape Otway Lighthouse stands 90 meters tall and has been the Beacon of Hope for ships since 1848. Hundreds of lives were lost in shipwrecks off Cape Otway, a sad but fascinating history which led to the building of the Lightstation in the foothills of the impenetrable forests of the Otways. Cape Otway Lighthouse is the highlight of the Great Ocean Road where with a short detour through magnificent forests, much koala life can be seen. The “Kidzone” activity program is fun and exciting for all primary school aged children. The gourmet café features an historic photo gallery and video room. Australia’s first submarine cable link was laid between Cape Otway and Launceston in 1859. The Telegraph Station has been meticulously restored and a radar bunker, built in 1942 after a United States ship was sunk by a German mine off Cape Otway, has been newly renovated. The Lightstation precinct is the traditional home of the Gadabanud people. Discover more about this isolated, but resourceful Aboriginal clan. The Ships That Shaped Australia exhibition Don’t miss this exhibition of 27 paintings of vessels that sailed into our history books. Each of the large scale works were painted by the late Jack L Koskie and capture the high drama of early shipping in Australia including the Loch Ard which was wrecked in 1878 trying to sight the Cape Otway light, the HMS Investigator which surveyed Australian waters under the command of Matthew Flinders, SS Casino which was wrecked at Apollo Bay in 1932 and HMAS Sydney, famous for her battle with the German vessel Emden in 1914, just to name a few. Lightstation manager Trish Goodlet said “Cape Otway had real links with some of the vessels portrayed and this exhibition which gives locals and tourists further insight into our amazing maritime history, which the Lightstation is very keen to promote and preserve”. Lighthouse tours are held daily from 9am - 5pm and entry to the exhibition is free with Lighthouse entry. P 5237 9240 • lightstation.com

Metropolis Gallery 6-22 July Heather Stewart: False Histories Catherine Robertson: Confluence Heather Stewart’s paintings and drawings are driven by an interest in the nature of identity and focus on the mysterious historical figure of Mary Magdalene. Heather explores how powerful imagery has created a false history of Magdalene’s character, with resultant works evolving through passages of painting that at once reveal and conceal; break and mend; fragment and unite, creating a metaphor for how we have come to know this elusive identity. Catherine Robertson sees her paintings as an expression of the subconscious processes of life experience and the landscapes of the

Australian bush and Papua New Guinea. Catherine’s paintings are an expressive deconstruction of landscape in which the dispersion and layers of colour and light have been strengthened by her interest in artists like Claude Monet and William Turner. Enjoy Opening Night of the two exhibitions at 6-8pm Thursday 6 July. The shows run until 22 July. Preview works online. Gallery open Weekdays 9am - 5pm and Saturday 10 - 4pm. Flying Brick Cider House If you haven’t already been, this retro inspired landmark venue is definitely calling. Think innovate space, a tasting paddle of ciders, amazing food without the ‘fancy’, the best Bellarine wines around, a solid selection of beer, Friday night live music which traces the roots of rock, soul, rhythm and blues and you’ll get an inkling of what to expect – fabulous, funky, fun. Flying Brick Cider Co was launched on The Bellarine six years ago, a first for this region. The quirky name comes from the Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoo whose local nick name is ‘Flying Brick’. Known for their spunk, these birds are loved for their happy, playful and seemingly ‘naughty’ appearance and disposition. Flying Brick ciders are traditionally crafted from 100% fresh fruit. They contain no sugars, colours, flavourings or concentrates. Today, Flying Brick Cider is one of the fastest growing boutique ciders in Australia with distribution moving across Victoria, Queensland and South Australia. In addition to the three classic and highly awarded Flying Brick Cider offerings – Original, Pear and Draught - the on-site cidery is continually crafting boutique seasonal batches from fresh, seasonal fruit. Patrons can also grab a hip 1.89 litre ‘Growler’ of their favourite cider to take home, enjoy then return for a discounted replacement Growler of any on tap cider, including the latest boutique batch on the pour. Executive Chef, Dwayne Bourke has designed a contemporary and distinctively different menu designed to inspire, share and indulge. Local produce and community group partnerships are both key features. Open seven days a week 10am – 5pm for lunch and guided tastings. Dinner Friday and Saturday nights. Manzanillo Grove Makers of Extra Virgin Olive Oil

BeachHouse Barwon Heads Once the old Fire Station, BeachHouse Barwon Heads showcases some of the Bellarine Peninsula’s fine produce, wine, cider and beer. Whether it’s a casual drink with friends or celebrating that special occasion, their friendly staff are happy to accommodate. BeachHouse Barwon Heads prides itself on its friendly and efficient service, a consistent high quality of food and affordable and extensive wine list, which has a number of local wines on display. Their aim is to provide customers with a wide range of locally produced wines, as they are located in one of Australia’s premier wine regions.

Manzanillo Grove, with over 4500 olive trees and seven different varieties, was established in 1997 in the fertile valleys of the Bellarine Peninsula and is owned and operated by the Kint family. They pride themselves in producing a fine quality cold pressed extra virgin olive oil, chemically free that is processed on the property. Manzanillo Olive Oil is not heat extracted at any stage of production and therefore is of the highest quality and has a flavor unique to their grove. Taste and purchase cold pressed olive oil and a range of infused oils. They also have chemical free cosmetics made with cold pressed olive oil and table fruit along with a vast range of produce in the cellar door. Everything they sold comes from the property and all products are chemical free, naturally processed and organically grown. Stop by and experience their unique olives for a tasting and also pick your own olives. Open seven days. Come and enjoy their new luxury accommodation. P 5251 3621 / 0438 513 621 • manzanillogrove.com.au Whitcombes Rd Drysdale

Their function space is perfect for a work celebration or family gathering and caters for 40 guests seated or 60 guests for a’ cocktail style’ function.

Bellarine Peninsula Golf Clubs PORTARLINGTON GOLF CLUB “CCV Best Golf Club 2014” and “PGA Regional Course of the Year”. Portarlington Golf Club’s award winning course is waiting for you on your next visit to the beautiful Bellarine Peninsula. Green fee players are welcome. The course teamed with the extensive entertainment facilities within the Clubhouse, including the bistro open daily; make it the perfect place for a round of golf. SEAHAVEN VILLAGE Seahaven Village is a Green Star accredited and implements environmentally friendly practices. Each cottage has its own bright and fresh décor, with a coastal charm overlooking a huge park with tennis, bowls, walking and a great playground. The perfect spot for golf getaways, wedding groups, and winery weekends. CURLEWIS GOLF CLUB To play Curlewis is to fall in love with this iconic, much-loved course on the Bellarine. Enjoy the well bunkered links-style layout, sandy loam base, naturally undulating fairways and large contoured greens. An on-site state-of-the-art water reclamation plant ensures lush playing conditions year round. Pro Shop and excellent practise facilities. A hip clubhouse facility completes the exceptional Curlewis experience. Green Fee players welcome.

Come along and taste farm produced and processed extra virgin olive oil, straight from the trees to your taste buds. With the classic cool climate providing a distinct Victorian coastal character, the oils are versatile in taste and vary in their degrees of fruitiness. The main varieties on offer are Picual, Arbequinia, Manzanillo, Frantoio, Leccino, Coratina and Koroneiki. There are also three varieties of citrus oils that are delicious as an addition to any salad. The growing methods utilized are based on being environmentally sustainable and support the wildlife habitats of Australian plants and animals. All oils are extracted within hours of harvesting, ensuring purity and freshness. All waste products from the production of the oils are recycled on the property. The trees are harvested in the winter months by a mechanical shaker with smaller trees handpicked. Olives are then processed immediately to retain their freshness. Once the oil is extracted it is stored in stainless steel tanks to let the oil settle naturally. The oil is then stored in a temperature controlled environment until bottling. As well as offering oil tastings, the shop also stocks olive oil body care products and soaps, gourmet pantry items, Oakdene wines, potted olive trees and great gift ideas. Visitors are also welcome to wander through the Kalamata olive grove adjacent to the shop. 50 acres of vines are being planted for Oakdene Wines, so come down and enjoy the ever changing landscape. The shop is easy to locate, only a short drive from Drysdale, Portarlington, Queenscliff and Ocean Grove. Rosie will be there every Thursday – Sunday from 11am-4pm for tastings and sales and looks forward to your visit.
