Narana Aboriginal Cultural Centre will throw open their doors on Saturday 3 June to welcome Narana Unplugged 111, which is a musical celebration in line with National Reconciliation Week. A diverse range of musical styles will be offered throughout the day in this all ages, alcohol free event. Families are very welcome to come along, so grab a picnic rug and be a part of this wonderful music event.

We cover many interesting themes, those that appeal and gain momentum beyond Geelong and far and wide, along with smaller, intimate events where enthusiasts gather, keenly display their talents and passions. Then everything in between covering every possible interest and age group. Arts and Music figure high on the agenda as do events celebrating history, festival events and community events raising money for much needed causes. Add to the list a good handful of events which cover a wide range of topics and interests and Geelong is never far behind in ensuring a wide range of events is always on offer.

Narana Unplugged III Saturday 3 June - 12pm to 5pm Narana Aboriginal Cultural Centre invites music lovers to come together and Rock for Reconciliation at this years' Narana Unplugged III event featuring Benny Walker, Alice Skye, Nathan Seeckts, Rach Brennan, Lyndon Morgan plus special guests The Deadly Dancers. In 2017, during National Reconciliation Week (NRW), running through until 3 June, we reflect on two significant anniversaries in Australia’s reconciliation journey – 50 years since the 1967 referendum and 25 years since the historic Mabo decision. As we commemorate these significant milestones, we ask all Australians to be a part of the next big steps in our nation’s reconciliation journey. “This event is part of Narana’s efforts to continually engage with the local community in new ways and share Narana’s ethos of listening and learning to a wider audience,” says Festival Director Lincon Boyd. Narana Unplugged III is an all ages, alcohol free event, offering families exposure to a mix of well-known, up and coming acts performing live and stripped back on Narana’s unique Boomerang Stage, showcasing a diverse range of musical styles and influences. Tickets are just $20 available from Narana’s Retail Shop as well as available on the day with kids under 12 free. “The affordable entry price makes it a perfect day out for families. National Wool Museum Scarf Festival, Galaxies: a textile journey to infinity and beyond. Weaving its way into the fabric of Geelong’s thriving arts and culture scene, is this year’s Scarf Festival at the National Wool Museum. Galaxies: a textile journey to infinity and beyond, offers a vast display of hundreds of scarves created specifically for the event. This must-see textile exhibition includes entries from across the globe, inspired by the cosmos. National Wool Museum Director Padraic Fisher said the competition, now in its 14th year, had continued to grow each year by supporting textile artists across Australia and around the world and sharing their talent. “The strength of craft and textile art in Australia lies with the practitioners who keep the art of handmade alive and well,” he said. Scarves are judged in 11 categories, showcasing both traditional and experimental work. The winners of each category are eligible for the coveted Scarf of the Year Award. This year’s judges include Executive Director Craft Victoria Richard

Ferguson along with Scienceworks’ Melbourne Planetarium Manager and Senior Curator of Astronomy: Dr Tanya Hill. The festival provides an opportunity to learn, create and share your own purls of wisdom with an exciting program of craft demonstrations and workshops. Craft workshops include felting, knitting, thread painting and design and will be held on selected Wednesdays and Saturdays throughout the festival. Pop-up craft demonstration markets will also be held on the Queen’s birthday long weekend 10-12 June and the weekends of 8-9 July and 12-13 August. The Gordon Short Courses Learn some new skills with a short course. Short courses at The Gordon are a fantastic way to build on your existing skills or learn something new. The Wool Exchange Entertainment Complex prides itself on being the leading live band venue in Geelong. They have a reputation for bringing premium live music to the city. Their venue is ideal for a wide range of acts from modern-day indie bands, with niche followings to Australia’s long and established iconic groups. The Wool Exchange has a rich history in Geelong and a rich history in the city’s music scene. What is now the upstairs split level function room, was once the venue where wool traders bought and sold their wares during public auctions. The auditorium had steep, ramped seating, that is now long gone, although the original barrel vaulted ceiling decorated with neo-Greco detail remains and adds to the grandeur and acoustics of the room. The Geelong Revival Fellowship is thrilled to be hosting the 2017 International Revival Fellowship Convention. They are looking forward to seeing many members from around the world come to Geelong to share their story along with warmly welcome visitors from Geelong and surrounding districts to come and hear how they too, can find a renewed life.

Cape Otway Lightstation This iconic Cape Otway Lighthouse stands 90 meters tall and has been the Beacon of Hope for ships since 1848. Hundreds of lives were lost in shipwrecks off Cape Otway, a sad but fascinating history which led to the building of the Lightstation in the foothills of the impenetrable forests of the Otways. Cape Otway Lighthouse is the highlight of the Great Ocean Road where with a short detour through magnificent forests, much koala life can be seen. The “Kidzone” activity program is fun and exciting for all primary school aged children. The gourmet café features an historic photo gallery and video room. Australia’s first submarine cable link was laid between Cape Otway and Launceston in 1859. The Telegraph Station has been meticulously restored and a radar bunker, built in 1942 after a United States ship was sunk by a German mine off Cape Otway, has been newly renovated. The Lightstation precinct is the traditional home of the Gadabanud people. Discover more about this isolated, but resourceful Aboriginal clan. The Ships That Shaped Australia exhibition Don’t miss this exhibition of 27 paintings of vessels that sailed into our history books. Each of the large scale works were painted by the late Jack L Koskie and capture the high drama of early shipping in Australia including the Loch Ard which was wrecked in 1878 trying to sight the Cape Otway light, the HMS Investigator which surveyed Australian waters under the command of Matthew Flinders, SS Casino which was wrecked at Apollo Bay in 1932 and HMAS Sydney, famous for her battle with the German vessel Emden in 1914, just to name a few. Lightstation manager Trish Goodlet said “Cape Otway had real links with some of the vessels portrayed and this exhibition which gives locals and tourists further insight into our amazing maritime history, which the Lightstation is very keen to promote and preserve”. Fort Queenscliff Museum Fort Queenscliff dates from 1860 when an open battery was constructed on Shortland’s Bluff to defend the entrance to Port Phillip Bay. The Fort which underwent major redevelopment in the late 1870’s became the headquarters for an extensive chain of forts around Port Phillip Heads. Today, it is one of the largest and best preserved forts in the country. Enjoy this rare opportunity to tour a 19th century Coastal Artillery Fort. Seaview Gallery This month Seaview will be showcasing the works of well-known print maker: Vida Pearson. Vida Pearson has been a professional artist/ printmaker for over 25 years. In the last 15 years she has concentrated almost exclusively on lino-cuts. She has a distinctive style featuring high contrast, strong design with bright hand-colouring. Well known for her beautiful birds and Australian fauna, Vida is a member of the Wildlife Art Society of Australasia and relishes the opportunity to observe birds and animals in their natural habitat whether around Australia or overseas. Vida has recently visited Africa, Madagascar, Antarctica, Iceland and Asia where she has photographed and collected material as inspiration for new works. Luminous relic will present a major new collaborative painting and moving image work by artists Mandy Martin and Alexander Boynes, together with a score by Tristen Parr and performance by Laura Boynes. One of many unique items is the historical and original WW1 German flag which was captured at the surrender of the German Garrison in Samoa on 29 August, 1914. This was the first flag surrendered to the Allied Forces. Armor Antiques buy and sell antique swords, antique guns, helmets, badges, uniforms, medals, books and also have a large range of authentic Samurai armour. The Park is locally owned and operated and is home to the largest indoor skatepark in Australia and boasts the largest indoor Vert Ramp outside of the USA. The Park has been designed to be Australia’s mecca of skateboarding and action sports including BMX, scooters and inline and has attracted both national and international attention. Among the many highlights of this unique park are the 3ft high kids ramp, a 40ft wide mini ramp with pool coping, a 90ft Vert ramp with kickers and offsets, a concrete street course plus the only indoor mini mega ramp in the country. At only $13 for a three hour session, this is great value ($15 first visit only includes membership registration card). All participants must be aged six and over. There is also a fully stocked skate shop which provides parts, repairs, friendly advice plus the ability to hire or buy skateboards, scooters, helmets and safety gear. Gift vouchers are also available. The onsite café provides a great range of hot and cold food and drinks.

Jirrahlinga Koala & Wildlife Sanctuary Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) One World Children Centre’s OSHC program is designed to enhance your child’s imagination and capture their interest, with a focus on recreation and leisure. This program, designed by a qualified educator, covers a broad range of interests designed to entertain school aged children. Your child will learn new ideas and develop new skills in a fun and educational way. These children’s classes promote individual creative growth and expression. Your child will discover their own creative potential through the development of their technical skills. The OSHC program at One World encourages original thinking, creative problem solving, self-confidence and individual growth both personally and academically. The Bellarine Railway Heritage Train Service The regular Heritage Train Service takes passengers on a scenic journey from Queenscliff to Drysdale or Lakers Siding, traveling alongside Swan Bay and through bush and farm land. Trains run on Sundays during the year, as well as Tuesday and Thursday in the Easter, July and September school holidays. During the Summer Holidays, extra train running days will be scheduled. This excludes Day Out With Thomas, Queenscliff Music Festival and Santa Train weekends. • Carriage hire is ideal for children’s birthdays or groups of 20 plus, however bookings are essential. • Cycle or walk beside an operating railway from Drysdale to Queenscliff and return on-board the carriages. Bikes are carried free and group bookings are advised. • Day Out With Thomas - Thomas the Tank Engine will be back in Queenscliff on 7 and 8 October, along with Douglas, Oliver, Henry, Salty, those Troublesome Trucks and Sir Topham Hatt. The whole family can enjoy unlimited rides with Thomas on the Troublesome Trucks, a steam train ride to Lakers Siding with one of Thomas’ Friends and the chance to win a Thomas DVD by entering the ‘Spot the Engine’ competition. The event is from 10am to 4pm and includes unlimited access to the jumping castle, maze, movie theatre, storytelling and heaps of photo opportunities. There is so much to see and so much to do, so take it in bite sized pieces and enjoy each and every experience on offer and we guarantee you will be back again.

Come along and taste farm produced and processed extra virgin olive oil, straight from the trees to your taste buds. With the classic cool climate providing a distinct Victorian coastal character, the oils are versatile in taste and vary in their degrees of fruitiness. The main varieties on offer are Picual, Arbequinia, Manzanillo, Frantoio, Leccino, Coratina and Koroneiki. There are also three varieties of citrus oils that are delicious as an addition to any salad. The growing methods utilized are based on being environmentally sustainable and support the wildlife habitats of Australian plants and animals. All oils are extracted within hours of harvesting, ensuring purity and freshness. All waste products from the production of the oils are recycled on the property. The trees are harvested in the winter months by a mechanical shaker with smaller trees handpicked. Olives are then processed immediately to retain their freshness. Once the oil is extracted it is stored in stainless steel tanks to let the oil settle naturally. The oil is then stored in a temperature controlled environment until bottling. As well as offering oil tastings, the shop also stocks olive oil body care products and soaps, gourmet pantry items, Oakdene wines, potted olive trees and great gift ideas. Visitors are also welcome to wander through the Kalamata olive grove adjacent to the shop. 50 acres of vines are being planted for Oakdene Wines, so come down and enjoy the ever changing landscape. The shop is easy to locate, only a short drive from Drysdale, Portarlington, Queenscliff and Ocean Grove.
