Events Our wide and wonderful region is a delightful showcase of a large array of varying events throughout each and every year. We cover many interesting themes, those that appeal and gain momentum beyond Geelong and far and wide, along with smaller, intimate events where enthusiasts gather, keenly display their talents and passions. Then everything in between covering every possible interest and age group. Arts and Music figure high on the agenda as do events celebrating history, festival events and community events raising money for much needed causes. Add to the list a good handful of events which cover a wide range of topics and interests and Geelong is never far behind in ensuring a wide range of events is always on offer.

Toast to the Coast Held over the Melbourne Cup long weekend, this iconic festival is one of the most anticipated events on the local calendar and showcases the best wines and gourmet food from around the Surf Coast, Moorabool Valley and Bellarine Peninsula. The two-day event just an hour out of Melbourne offers guests the chance to taste, drink and eat their way across a selection of awardwinning wineries while enjoying the picturesque vineyard settings and live entertainment. Now in it’s 16th year, Toast to the Coast is a true celebration of our unique Geelong wine region, the perfect day out or weekend away, and also includes a multitude of family-friendly venues. However you want to experience Toast to the Coast, there is a venue for you. Weekend passes include a commemorative take-home Geelong Wine glass which doubles as your passport to free wine tastings at all host vineyards. This year’s event is set to be a sell-out, so make sure you take advantage of the Early Bird Offer which finishes on 24 September. Tickets will not be available on the day so start organizing your weekend plans today. 18th Amendment Bar & Lounge The 18th Amendment of the United States Constitution effectively established the prohibition of alcoholic beverages in the United States by declaring the production, transport, and sale of alcohol illegal from 1920 until 1933. Not to be deterred, the bootleggers and back door bartenders created a rapidly growing world of illegal 'speakeasy' venues across America that created and served some of the most well known classic cocktails that we enjoy to this day. The “speakeasies” of New York and Chicago became a darker and mysterious business where gangsters seduced people of all classes with jazz, lust, love and, of course, booze. The 18th Amendment Bar invites you to enjoy their concoction of prohibition elegance interlaced with modern innovation. The brainchild of Australian hospitality veteran and Geelong local, Gorge Camorra, the venue oozes charm and style with a speakeasy-style entrance and sit-down cocktail service for up to 75 guests delivered by expert and friendly staff. On the menu at The 18th Amendment Bar, you will find all the Prohibitionera classic cocktails plus a selection of barrel-aged cocktails they’ve already laid down, which are ready for drinking. They also feature one of the region's largest range of premium spirits and liqueurs, with over 450 different spirits on offer and over 165 whiskeys and 50 gins. Not only that, but they also have Whisky, Rum, Gin and Tequila clubs that run Masterclasses, tasting sessions, meet the Distiller nights and access to limited release spirits. Please visit the website or check them out on facebook for all upcoming events. Now grab some 'giggle water', 'make some whoopee' and try not to get too 'zozzled'. Open Wednesday-Sunday from 5pm to late during September (Open seven days a week from October). E manager@the18thamendmentbar.com.au 82a Little Malop St, Geelong • www.the18thamendmentbar.com.au

Barwarre Gardens Retirement Village Are you entering retirement? Perhaps you’re considering downsizing as you enter that next phase of your life? Stage 5 at Barwarre Gardens Retirement Village is now taking expressions of interest, it’s perfectly located living, the way you like it. When circumstances change in your life and you need a new home, often a retirement village isn’t the first place you might consider. That was the case for Carol Hose, who first became aware of Barwarre Gardens on a recommendation from her sister. Tentative at first, after a chat with her family, Carol agreed that a new lifestyle would be beneficial for her.

STATE OF THE ART LIVING

for the young at heart

Carol said it was the one and only retirement village she looked at. After she walked in the gate, she said “there was just something about the feel of the place”. Having only been at Barwarre Gardens for a couple of weeks, Carol was still settling in and unpacking her boxes. She was greeted at the door by a friendly neighbour, Joan, who invited her to Friday night happy hour with a number of other residents. Carol felt instantly welcomed. “That was amazing because I just felt someone had my back,” Carol said. “People reach out to you, but without being intrusive, and that’s something that’s important because we’re all very private in our own way.” Situated within walking distance of Marshall Train Station and just a minute or two’s drive from major shopping centres, Barwarre Gardens was developed and built by iconic Geelong community services organisation Karingal.

Lighthouse Olive Oil Shop Come along and taste farm produced and processed extra virgin olive oil, straight from the trees to your taste buds. With the classic cool climate providing a distinct Victorian coastal character, the oils are versatile in taste and vary in their degrees of fruitiness. The main varieties on offer are Picual, Arbequinia, Manzanillo, Frantoio, Leccino, Coratina and Koroneiki. There are also three varieties of citrus oils that are delicious as an addition to any salad. The growing methods utilized are based on being environmentally sustainable and support the wildlife habitats of Australian plants and animals. All oils are extracted within hours of harvesting, ensuring purity and freshness. All waste products from the production of the oils are recycled on the property. The trees are harvested in the winter months by a mechanical shaker with smaller trees handpicked. Olives are then processed immediately to retain their freshness. Once the oil is extracted it is stored in stainless steel tanks to let the oil settle naturally. The oil is then stored in a temperature controlled environment until bottling. As well as offering oil tastings, the shop also stocks olive oil body care products and soaps, gourmet pantry items, Oakdene wines, potted olive trees and great gift ideas. Visitors are also welcome to wander through the Kalamata olive grove adjacent to the shop. 50 acres of vines are being planted for Oakdene Wines, so come down and enjoy the ever changing landscape. The shop is easy to locate, only a short drive from Drysdale, Portarlington, Queenscliff and Ocean Grove. Rosie will be there every Thursday – Sunday from 11am-4pm for tastings and sales and looks forward to your visit. Jack Rabbit Vineyard

Flying Brick Cider House

Yes, Said the Seal

Perched high on the majestic cliffs of the Bellarine Peninsula, amidst rolling paddocks and vines, is iconic winery and restaurant Jack Rabbit. Patrons cannot help but delight in the ‘to die for’ views which span across the bay to Melbourne, the You Yangs and Geelong. The view isn’t the only thing to excite – a stunning a la carte menu featuring an abundance of local produce will indulge even the most discerning culinary whim.

A must! Think innovate space, a tasting paddle of ciders, amazing food without the ‘fancy’, the best Bellarine wines around, a solid selection of beer, Friday night live music which traces the roots of rock, soul, rhythm and blues and you’ll get an inkling of what to expect, funky, fabulous, fun!

Delight in this suite of elegant, limited release cool maritime climate wines. Crafted by leading Bellarine winemaker Darren Burke, expect to see traditional winemaking boundaries pushed to new limits, complex, cutting edge wines are here to engage.

Flying Brick ciders are traditionally crafted from 100% fresh fruit and contain no sugars, colours, flavourings or concentrates. In addition to the three signature ciders: Original, Pear and Draught, the onsite cidery is continually crafting boutique seasonal batches from fresh, seasonal fruit.

A stable of sophisticated cool climate wines guarantees to cap off a truly brilliant regional experience. Jack Rabbit is open seven days a week 10.30am-5pm for lunch, guided tastings and Cellar Door sales. It is also open Friday and Saturday nights for dinner.

Launched on The Bellarine in 2010, the quirky name comes from the Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoo whose local nick name is ‘Flying Brick’. Known for their spunk, these birds are loved for their happy, playful and seemingly ‘naughty’ appearance and disposition. Local legend also has it that if a flock of black cockatoos flies overhead, you are blessed with good luck.

A delightful aged Reserve Blanc de Noir spearheads the range. Follow by tasting the Sauvignon Blanc (nurtured for nine months in French Oak, don’t be surprised if you find yourself believing you are tasting a heavenly chablis or sancerre). The Rose is crafted from 100 per cent Shiraz and will indulge those seeking a delicate, savoury offering of this style. Complete your Yes said the Seal journey with a highly technical (but oh so delicate) Pinot Noir and a rich, succulent Shiraz expressive of all that is alluring of a premium cool climate red. A proud resident of the renowned Flying Brick Cider House, itself cocooned in vines.

The Gallery art @ wintergarden September 1 - 26: “Shadows etc”

Our region is indeed a mecca of art and expression. Galleries both large and small offer enthusiasts and admirers so many and varied forms of artwork to simply admire or outlay and enjoy. Whether it be Contemporary, Abstract, Modernist or Traditional art, there is definitely a style that beckons and a form of painting, sculpture or carving that you simply won’t resist.

A Solo Exhibition by Eva Nauckhoff de Richebourg. It is the artist’s wish that the exhibition will be like walking through the pages in a book where every page is a new experience... Exploring three fascinations: shadows, how they touch our minds and how they distort what we believe to be reality, decay and the unique magic of the Australian eucalyptus and horses and how they touch our hearts with their beauty and their kindness. art@wintergarden is a working studio gallery, where you will find art works of excellence including landscapes, still life, portraiture and sculptures. Located upstairs and open seven days a week: 10am-4pm. Expressions of Interest are invited for the business. Please contact Jill for further details and information. P 0401 160 430 • Facebook: art wintergarden www.artwintergarden.com.au • 51 McKillop St Geelong

Exhibitions are consistently changing to ensure the art landscape keeps evolving and showcasing our regions diverse artistic talent. But the big question is which Gallery to start with as the choices are indeed wide.

These can range from historical furnishings from the early settlers of Geelong, to beautiful European designed arrays to invest in and pass through the generations. Alternatively the unique, the unusual and the one off can be found at the many collectables throughout the region which add color and pizazz to any home and at the very least a great talking point. Or simply an item of the past, which can be bought back to life and enjoyed. Put an afternoon aside and enjoy a browse at the many interesting and intriguing Antiques and Collectables businesses within our region. But be prepared as you won’t come home empty handed.

The Amazing Mill Markets Geelong businessman and owner of the Mill Market Group, Mark Ward brings years of expertise to this amazing concept and continues to build on this success.
