Karingal Training: Be the Difference Thanks to his newly acquired qualification through Karingal Training, Trevor Cantwell (pictured) is now employed by Leisure Networks as a Tour Leader, where most of his clients have a physical or intellectual disability. Karingal Training is a highly regarded Registered Training Organisation delivering job-ready and nationally-recognised qualifications and vocational short courses. Trevor, a community-minded man with a caring nature, made the switch from banking and finance to the growing sector of disability and aged care in 2015. Noticing the employment opportunities in such a role, Trevor chose to study a Certificate IV in Mental Health/Disability through Karingal Training, having previously volunteered for Karingal in the past. “I’m happy that I’m in this industry, and I can say ‘thanks’ to Karingal, because I’m qualified to do it now,” said Trevor, who still keeps in contact with his fellow students. “But it wasn’t just getting qualified, it was feeling confident to know what I’m doing and they prepared me well for it.” Trevor loved the course and looked forward to every session. He and his classmates were encouraged to speak up about their own life experiences, and the smaller groups made it possible for each individual to receive the attention they needed to excel. Trevor was particularly complimentary of the trainers, who had the patience to allow everyone to keep up with what was required in the

Harjeet Sembhi puts the ‘bar’ in barista. The 26-year-old basketball fanatic has recently switched from mixing drinks to making coffees, and he’s now the head barista at Seasons Café’s newest location – the site of the new Barwon Water building, in Ryrie Street. During his time as a bartender, Harjeet learned to love coffee: the smells, the art, and the taste and it inspired him to pursue the barista life as a profession. Now he’s “addicted”! Harjeet beams as he explains the amazing feedback around the new Seasons Café coffee in its first few weeks of operation. “The coffee blend we’re using now is perfect; it’s mild, it’s not strong,” he says. “The variety of people that we attract with this coffee is huge: young and old. Everybody loves it and this blend is perfect for the palate.” This is Seasons Café’s third location in Geelong, complementing its cafe in Douro St, North Geelong and the Eastern Hub in McKillop St, East Geelong. The cafes are owned and operated by Karingal St Laurence and provide supported employment for people with a disability. Harjeet knew about Karingal St Laurence’s involvement with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and feels privileged to be able to work within such a space. “It’s very entrusting, to be honest, because working with people with a disability requires a lot of skill and a lot of patience and that’s kind of a learning curve for me.” Pop in for coffee or cake at Seasons Café Central Geelong.

The Wool Exchange Entertainment Geelong’s Original Live Music and Bands Venue The Wool Exchange Entertainment Complex prides itself on being the leading live band venue in Geelong. They have a reputation for bringing premium live music to the city. Their venue is ideal for a wide range of acts from modern-day indie bands, with niche followings to Australia’s long and established iconic groups. The Wool Exchange has a rich history in Geelong and a rich history in the city’s music scene. Locally owned and operated, the owners have worked hard to build an enviable reputation for their cafe, function rooms and wedding receptions in Geelong and while they are important elements of the business, live music continues to be a headline act at The Wool Exchange. Check out the website for a list of event details of coming shows or phone for information. The imposing building that houses The Wool Exchange Entertainment Complex was built in 1927-28 and was a centre piece of the wool industry, which thrived throughout western Victoria in this era. What is now the upstairs split level function room, was once the venue where wool traders bought and sold their wares during public auctions. The auditorium had steep, ramped seating, that is now long gone, although the original barrel vaulted ceiling decorated with neo-Greco detail remains and adds to the grandeur and acoustics of the room. Function Packages: Enquire now for a range of packages to suit any budget catering from 20 - 500 people. Catering for both food and drinks is taken care of with a range of food packages to suit all events and budgets from formal sit-down functions through to cocktail parties, birthdays, wedding receptions and business breakfasts. National Wool Museum Iconic Industry - 24 August - 10 October The Iconic Industry project provides a creative exploration of Geelong’s industrial identity and a collaborative interface between architecture, art and community. Its intent is to focus artistic processes on the re-activation of memory and erasure as an interval or pause while Geelong plans for its postindustrial future. Through the work of several artists (Sarah Duyshart, Robert Mihajlovski, Bindi Cole Chocka, Merinda Kelly, Amanda Shone and Alex Hamilton) and a team of Architecture and Creative Arts-based Deakin University researchers and students, Iconic Industry powerfully evokes the sounds, views, atmosphere and memories of Geelong’s industrial legacy. Iconic Industry is a part of the #Vacant Geelong project concentrating on the buildings and sites of Geelong’s current de-industrialisation, the thousands of acres of land and often overlooked beauty of its industrial buildings.

20

Events

The artistic works and research of Iconic Industry engage with Geelong’s factories and refineries, its railway tracks and docks, and with the embodied social and cultural memories of factory workers and technicians to create a multi-sensory experience. A major element of the Iconic Industry project is its immersive quality, particular to Geelong. For three months artists used an old, vacant space (the Open Studio) in North Geelong to research the industrial sites, and work with the community. In this way Iconic Industry aims to capture a significant pivotal moment between Geelong’s history and its futures, confronting the negative perceptions of the de-industrialisation of this resilient city. It builds on the histories, practices and aesthetics evident in Geelong’s industrial buildings to give voice to the communities they have helped foster. Fight Cancer Foundation’s Footy Colours Day is one day in September when your workplace, school or club can unite in the fight against cancer by wearing your team’s colours with pride. Each year, more than 800 Australian children and young people are diagnosed with cancer, while another 5,600 continue with their treatment. On average, these kids miss out on more than six months of school, making it difficult for them to keep up with their peers. Every dollar raised helps Footy Colours Day and Fight Cancer Foundation support these kids living with cancer to continue with their education. Our programs support almost 2,000 learners each year, helping to reduce the significant impact cancer has on the lives of these young Australians. Cape Otway Lightstation This iconic Cape Otway Lighthouse stands 90 meters tall and has been the Beacon of Hope for ships since 1848. The “Kidzone” activity program is fun and exciting for all primary school aged children. The gourmet café features an historic photo gallery and video room. The Lightstation precinct is the traditional home of the Gadabanud people. Discover more about this isolated, but resourceful Aboriginal clan. STATE OF THE ART LIVING

for the young at heart

So confident was Joan that Barwarre Gardens was the place for her, she came in to have a look on a Wednesday and had her deposit down by that Saturday and she hasn’t once regretted her decision. “I had seen too many older people leave it too long to give up driving or leave it too long to decide to move, and I’d sworn that wasn’t going to happen to me, so here I am,” Joan said. Situated within walking distance of Marshall train station and just a minute or two’s drive from major shopping centres, Barwarre Gardens was developed and built by iconic Geelong community services organisation Karingal. Joan loves the community feel of the Village and how you can get to know everybody in the community, which is something that just wouldn’t happen in a regular town. “It’s as though we’re all immediate neighbours!” she said. The Village is opening its doors on Saturday 21 Oct for an Open Day, where guests can view floor plans and take a walk through the gardens while having a chat to residents as well.

Flying Brick Cider House If you haven’t already been, this retro inspired landmark venue is definitely calling. Think innovate space, a tasting paddle of ciders, amazing food without the ‘fancy’, the best Bellarine wines around, a solid selection of beer, Friday night live music which traces the roots of rock, soul, rhythm and blues and you’ll get an inkling of what to expect – fabulous, funky, fun. Flying Brick Cider Co was launched on The Bellarine six years ago, a first for this region. The quirky name comes from the Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoo whose local nick name is ‘Flying Brick’. Known for their spunk, these birds are loved for their happy, playful and seemingly ‘naughty’ appearance and disposition. Flying Brick ciders are traditionally crafted from 100% fresh fruit. They contain no sugars, colours, flavourings or concentrates. Today, Flying Brick Cider is one of the fastest growing boutique ciders in Australia with distribution moving across Victoria, Queensland and South Australia. In addition to the three classic and highly awarded Flying Brick Cider offerings – Original, Pear and Draught - the on-site cidery is continually crafting boutique seasonal batches from fresh, seasonal fruit. Patrons can also grab a hip 1.89 litre ‘Growler’ of their favourite cider to take home, enjoy then return for a discounted replacement Growler of any on tap cider, including the latest boutique batch on the pour. Executive Chef, Dwayne Bourke has designed a contemporary and distinctively different menu designed to inspire, share and indulge. Local produce and community group partnerships are both key features. Open seven days a week 10am – 5pm for lunch and guided tastings. Dinner Friday and Saturday nights. Metropolis Gallery 11–26 August Adrian Lockhart + Jedda Robaard: Art for Books Adrian Lockhart’s love of the line in printmaking and drawing is well represented in his upcoming exhibition ‘Art for Books’ at Metropolis Gallery. But his discovery of artist books and their various forms is at the heart. Showing his books alongside related paintings, drawings, woodblocks, etchings and monotypes demonstrates how the union of the ‘book’ and the ‘mark’ has formed a significant direction in his already substantial and established life’s work. For Jedda Robaard, book illustration is an opportunity to create little worlds where characters can play, unhindered by society’s restrictions. This body of work represents her journey creating those worlds, from her initial book Rabbit’s Year through to the ongoing Little Creatures Series.

The majority of these pieces have been created simply with pencil and watercolour. They are just puddles of colour if you like. Puddles manipulated into tiny beings with feelings, obligations and agendas. Friday 11 August - Meet the Artists on Opening Night, between 6 - 8pm. Both exhibitions run until 26 August. Saturday 19 August at 10.30am - Jedda will present an Artist’s Talk about her work for childrens’ books to coincide with Children’s Book Week. All Welcome.
