MUSIC REVIEW
GIG PREVIEW
Paper Aeroplanes, Greenlines, Lowri Evans, and Caroline Harrison. Saturday 26th March @ The Queens Hall, Narberth. The Queens Hall spring programme includes this gig which features the best of Pembrokeshire’s current acoustic performers. Headliners Paper Aeroplanes, who are Sarah Howells and Richard Llewellyn and whom were formerly members of influential bands such as Cartoon and Jylt, return to Narberth following successful tours of Europe and the USA promoting their critically acclaimed album The Day We Ran Into The Sea. Radio Wales described the record as “the finest album to come out of Wales since Duffy’s Rockferry” and it has gained nationwide airplay – Radio 2s Bob Harris is a big fan of the band – and one of the tracks, the single Cliché, has become a YouTube hit. Support on the evening comes from Greenlines, a new band fronted by singer songwriter Tim Williams (formerly of The Crook Family). The band has been dubbed “the Welsh Fleet Foxes” by Radio Wales. Their melodic, harmony drenched album Feet Fall Lightly has been produced by Cerys Matthews’ producer and multi-instrumentalist Mason Neely and has gained ecstatic reviews in the national press. Additional support comes from Newport bi-lingual singer songwriter Lowri Evans who was last seen at The Queens Hall supporting the legendary Ritchie Havens when she received a standing ovation from the sell-out crowd, and also Narberth based songstress Caroline Harrison. Tickets are on sale now.
DEMO CD COMPETITION - WIN! A DAY IN A RECORDING STUDIO We’ve teamed up with the Boatyard Music & Film Studio (Pembroke) to offer up and coming artists the opportunity to record their music in a state of the art studio and come away with their very own professionally recorded CD. We know that it is very difficult for new bands and solo performers to get their feet on that first rung of the ladder, lack of money and experience should not be a barrier to performers finding an expression for their talent!
Hate Gauge “Another Day In Hell” CD Milford’s Hate Gauge are Pembrokeshire’s most exciting and inventive hard rock band. Their new five track CD ‘Another Day In Hell’ shows influences ranging from Metallica to AC/ DC but this is very much their own work. The dense, muscular sound is that of a band at the peak of their powers and the album’s closer, Beautiful Cynical, is an epic tour de force that lingers in the head long after the final riff is over. Or am I suffering from tinnitus? ‘Another Day In Hell’ is available from www.hategauge.com
Any bands/artists in Pembrokeshire who are interested in competing for this valuable prize are asked to submit a brief biog and a musical web link (if you have one) to: info@whatsonpembrokeshire.co.uk Before February 14th. Make sure to include your contact details. The competition will be judged by BB Skone, the Boatyard Studio team and the What’s On Pembrokeshire editor. Details of the winner will be published in the next edition of the magazine.
The Boatyard Music & Film Studio was opened in the Spring of 2010 and is a facility built by the Tanyard Youth Project and funded by the National Lottery BIG Lottery Fund. It was built for community and youth activities in the fields of music and film and can also be hired for commercial purposes. All proceed go to support the Tanyard Youth project LTD. Boatyard also has its own label and is looking out for new talent to record, market, and advertise from the heart of Pembrokeshire.

THE BB SKONE ‘BROWN SHOES DON’T MAKE IT’ AWARDS 2010
Greenlines
GIG OF THE YEAR: Ah! So many wonderful gigs, such a joy! Vin Garbutt, Paper Aeroplanes, and Greenlines at Burnetts Hill Chapel were all wonderful nights out. The Quebe Sisters at The Queens Hall converted many to the irresistible rhythms of Western Swing. The droll wisecracking and sparkling musicianship of Arthur Ebeling at Caffe Vista was sensational. And bluegrass infused family band Cherryholmes won over even the most jaded of hearts. But the winners have to be the amazing Bellowhead who played two stupendous gigs at Theatr Mwldan and the De Valence early in the year. BEST BAND: Hate Gauge, Random Perception, and Regime all played cracking live shows throughout the year. Ted Crook & The Blues Highway have missed out on an award so many times yet consistently deliver the best Blues music you are likely to hear in Wales so congrats to you belatedly as the band are in the process of breaking up – oh cruel irony! Honourable mentions to The Lovely Somethings and The Hoochie Coochie Band. BEST RADIO PEMBROKESHRE LIVE SESSION: My favourite award for it is always an unalloyed pleasure to get local musicians into the back of the studio and let them rip raw. From the weird to the wonderful, the sublime to the ridiculous, it is all there. Sessions from George Whitfield, Ian Cal Ford, Impish Music, Bagpipe Whiskey, Ross Gurney, Lazy Dog, and Lowri Evans were such great fun and I hope this tone deaf engineer teased some great performances out of them. However, Sarah Howells of Paper Aeroplanes wins the award for a spinetingling session that left me breathless (or was that the air conditioning breaking down?).
BEST RECORDING: A vintage year for live recordings. Last year’s winner The Day We Ran Into The Sea by Paper Aeroplanes was re-released this November so is nominated once again. Ted Crook & The Blues Highway finally got around to releasing a CD and it was well worth the wait. Wolfpeople recorded part of their magnificent Steeple album at Mwnci Studios under the aegis of Jethro Chaplin and it could be album of the year but the band have only loose connections with Pembrokeshire. Chailo Sim and Hate Gauge both released albums to be proud of. Despite this strong competition, the award this year goes to Greenlines for their Feet Fall Lightly album. Tim Williams, formerly of award winners The Crook Family, assembled a new band of sympathetic musicians, and released a gorgeous, harmony drenched collection of tunes that demonstrated his acutely sensitive and heartfelt songwriting in the best possible light. And all underpinned by that distinctive farmer’s strum. BEST VENUE: Of the small venues, previous double award winner Burnetts Hill Chapel, Martletwy, still sets the standard others have yet to attain, though Caffe Vista in Tenby runs it close. Owner Yanni has made the best of what is a very small venue by consistently promoting music of the highest quality in an imaginative fashion. As far as the bigger venues go, the loss of the De Valence in Tenby was deeply felt on the music scene but both The Torch Theatre in Milford and The Queens Hall in Narberth continued with excellent programmes. Mosh Potato Promotions presented a slew of fine acts at The Imperial, Milford Haven. However, this year’s award goes to Theatr Mwldan in Cardigan which presented an exciting and varied musical progamme in relaxed welcoming surroundings. BEST FESTIVAL: The loss of the Celtic Blue Rock Festival was disappointing. Of the other major festivals, such as Pembrokeshire Fish Week, Narberth Food Festival, and Seafair, music was only an adjunct.Tenby Blues Festival responded well to the loss of their major venue the De Valence. Fishguard hosts two fine festivals – Folk in may and Jazz&Blues in August – those festivals are joint winners this year for splendid fun and well-programmed gigs in a lovely town despite not having a big venue for showcase gigs.

DRAGOS LUMPAN A superb photographic exhibition will be open from January 29th to March 12th in Oriel Q – Queens Hall Gallery Narberth. Dragos Lumpan is an award winning Romanian photographer who has been working on a project called ‘The Last Transhumance’. Transhumance is defined as the livestock’s movement in search of available pastures, over considerable distances, following set seasonal patterns, being trailed by a whole family of shepherds who live in temporary or movable shelters. Transhumance is a very ancient tradition in Romania, now becoming extinct. The few shepherds who still practice transhumance in Romania walk around 500 km in a year. This kind of shepherds lives in a different world, in a different time from that of the modern society. Unlike other modern activities, the lives of shepherds seem to be as hard as it used to be thousands of years ago. Shepherds have to take the grazing animals to new pastures every day, no matter the season or the weather. Once a worldwide practice, transhumance is now almost extinct in Europe. It is the rapid pace of its disappearance that urges our endeavours to grasp it thoroughly. Several places still preserve this practice, though in considerably altered forms. Italy, Albania, Turkey Greece, Romania and even here , the Preseli Hills of Pembrokeshire (Wales) is one of the most important areas in UK where a variant of transhumance is still practiced. The change of transhumance in UK is clarified by Caroline Juler (writer and sculptor, participant in this project): “Usually transhumance meant a pendulation between a home farm in a valley and a high pasture in the nearby hills or mountains. Today traditional shepherds’ work in Wales is done by farmers on quad bikes with dogs, and teams of professional shearers who tour the country. Nobody keeps watch over their flocks by day and night as they do in Romania, and none walks the sheep hundreds of miles to market along the old drovers’ roads.” Dragos has been documenting various groups throughout Europe over the last four years and he has selected a small sample of photographs to exhibit here in Pembrokeshire, in Oriel Q –

After 2000 years, Aristophanes’ comedy is as outrageous and bawdy as ever! Fluellen`s Artistic Director, Peter Richards, believes that this ancient play is, in fact, one of the most contemporary texts he has read for a long time. “The play is much more than a ribald comedy”, he says, “It makes political points about women’s role in society and the insanity of war that proves things are no different today than they were in 411BC when the play was written.” Theatr Gwaun, Fishguard. 8pm. As well as performing the play the ladies also present a fashion show and a murder mystery quiz complete with prize. If it can go wrong it probably will.... but surely it will be alright on the night? Mathry Village Hall. Doors open 7pm for 7.30pm start. Tickets on the door. £5.50/£3.50. Sat 5 February WIN KEECH
Even though most people only know Win from his hunting UFOs and crop circles on the BBC with actor Danny Dyer, Win comes from a widely based science and engineering background, having experience in turbine engine design and digital authentication systems. He is a Global Green award winner for his revolutionary wind micro-generator. Despite this otherwise conventional background, due to researching and filming unusual phenomena for over 25 yrs, he is now best known for his filming of the 777 Aum/Necklace formation in Eastfield, Wiltshire, and is highly regarded as a night photography expert. Where conventional science ends, is where his interest really starts and he has an annoying habit of coming back with the video evidence of it. Win will explain and show what is
really happening within the crop circle fields of Wiltshire, what it really means for all of us and why so many influences wish to distract us all from this knowledge. A true and unique view from the pitface of the crop circle phenomenon. Newport Memorial Hall, Newport. 7.30pm10pm.

Film Reviews
By Stefan Mohamed www.themobox.blogspot.com
The Green Hornet (PG-13) 127 Hours (15) This relentless thriller stars James Franco as an adrenaline junkie who finds himself in a nightmarish predicament and has to make a horrifying decision to stay alive. Based on the real life case of mountain climber Aron Rolston and directed by Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire), it’s truly harrowing in places, and not for the faint of heart, but if you have a strong stomach then it comes heartily recommended, as 127 Hours is a hugely exciting, beautifully made and brilliantly acted film. It’s also strangely uplifting, despite the gruesome subject matter, and you will emerge exhausted but utterly exhilarated (and possibly in need of a stiff drink). 10/10
You’ve heard of the Green Hornet, right? Fearless newspaper publisher by day, even more fearlesser masked crime fighter by night? Has a chop-sockying assistant called Kato? Ringing any bells? No? Well, don’t worry. He’s not exactly an A-list hero, and was to many a surprising choice for a big budget blockbuster revival, as far as brand recognition goes. But, to even greater surprise, despite widespread critical drubbing, the film’s gone and made a bunch of money. Imagine that. So is it worth seeing? Well, that largely depends on your tolerance for Seth Rogen, who here plays admirably against type as a slacker who eventually learns the burden of responsibility. I’m not a fan of his, and the fact that he stars, writes and produces means that his fingerprints are all over the film. If you love him, you’ll probably like “The Green Hornet”, although the idea that this dislikeable shlub is some sort of genius detective is possibly one suspension of disbelief too far, even for a Michel Gondry film. Oh yes. It’s directed by Michel Gondry, of “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and “The Science of Sleep”. Not that you’d realise that, as all of the quirk, charm and inventiveness for which he is reknowned are utterly absent. If ever there was an example of a talented director phoning it in, this is one. All that being said, “The Green Hornet” is not a bad film. What it is is extremely mediocre, which is almost worse; it’s not bad enough to be funny, it’s just boring. The villain is unthreatening, the plot pedestrian and even the action sequences, which should save it, bring nothing new to the table. Worth renting for a drunken Friday night in, but definitely not worth the price of cinema admission.

There’s still time to save Theatr Gwaun By Derek Webb
Theatr Gwaun is the only cinema on the North Pembrokeshire coast, and, along with the Palace in Haverfordwest, is one of the remaining two purpose built cinemas left in Pembrokeshire. By April 1 it might go the way of the Royal Playhouse in Tenby because Pembrokeshire County Council voted in January to withdraw all funding from it. Theatr Gwaun was originally known as The Studio, and still shows films three or four times a week – but since the 1990s it has also been able to stage theatre and music events. This flexibility ought to mean a variety of tastes and audiences can be catered for and, even given the smallish population of this part of Pembrokeshire, it should be sustainable. Lack of publicity certainly seems to be one major reason why it isn’t currently paying its way. In the past two years, audiences figures had dropped alarmingly, to which the council response seems to have been to reduce the budget accordingly. Therefore it has become a sort of self-fulfilling prophecy that the theatre doesn’t pay. So what can be done? In 2010, a group fighting for the theatre’s survival called Friends of Theatr Gwaun (FOTG) was formed . Already there are over 300 members who are kept up to date with newsletters, advance notice of what’s on, special discounts and the like. A petition of more than 2000 signatures was recently presented to the Council, showing the depth of support. And the group has gained the support of the local MP Stephen Crabb and Paul Davies the Assembly Member for Preseli Pembrokeshire, together with a number of other local councillors and AMs.
3
Since its formation the Friends have put on a number of events, and have the very popular SeaLegs Puppet show booked in for the school half term on Tuesday February 22nd at 2.30 p.m with The Ugly Duckling. Last year, SeaLegs proved so popular an additional show had to be hastily arranged! FOTG have also set up a network of ‘Theatr Gwaun Ambassadors’ who put up posters and generally spread the word The group has also taken on what ought to be the Council’s role and set up a website promoting not only FOTG events, but those that the Council has programmed: theatrgwaun.co.uk So while the March 31st deadline looms, all is not lost. The Friends of Theatr Gwaun are still talking with the Council, and indeed have produced a detailed project plan to show how they could take over the day-to-day running of the theatre and how it could be run sustainably. They anticipate setting up a charity which would look after the actual building and hirings etc, while the Friends would programme events. There is a terrific opportunity which, with a bit of goodwill and vision on the Council’s part, would be good news for the whole community.

Health & Fitness
By Martin James Martin James Health Club, Kilgetty
Committ to Get Fit
We are all different and thank goodness for that! However, because we are all so different it is very difficult to dictate how we should lead an active healthy lifestyle. We may want to run a marathon, maybe recover from injury after an accident, the Doctor may want you to reduce your blood pressure or maybe you might want to get into the under 11s rugby team. Age, injury, illness, current fitness levels and ultimate goals are all deciding factors when trying to prepare a programme of exercise for an individual. That coupled with motivation levels, available activities and time, are all obstacles that are placed before us. Over the coming months I will hope to give you some advice on starting or maintaining a healthy active lifestyle. I have been involved in Health, Leisure and Sport activities for over 30 years and during that time my views have changed quite considerably. I am fed up of people making false promises and would suggest that if you don’t want to improve your health, get more active, have a better chance of living longer and just have a more enjoyable life then don’t read any further. If you are still with me the first thing you must do is to Make a Commitment. You must commit to doing something and it has to be your choice. Don’t blame anyone else about your current condition, get up and do something about it. I’ve probably lost a lot of readers already because most people are out for quick easy fixes. Well I can guarantee you that if you do keep reading and make a commitment and stick at it then you will achieve your aims. It will not be easy, it will not be quick, but it will be a long term health commitment that will give you more energy, that will make you feel great and will enhance your life.
Committ to what you may be asking? Well now we are back to the problem of everyone being an individual and it would be impossible for me to write something to suit every reader but as a starting point ask your self the question, am I active for 30 minutes five times a week as an adult or for 60 minutes five times a week as a child? If the answer is no then you need to increase your activity levels. Then ask yourself are you overweight, if the answer is yes then you need to eat healthily and eat less. Quite simple in theory, but not so easy in practice. Before we go any further you need to be sure you are you well enough to start increasing your activity levels. Your Doctor can help here and it is certainly an advantage to attend one of the local authority or private gyms to get some personal advice and support. Then tell yourself where you want to be and commit to it. Next month we will talk of what you need to do to achieve your aims. If that’s too long to wait then get to your local gym to get started.

Travel

Exploring New Zealand
New Zealand’s North Island is an essential part of any visit to New Zealand, its dramatic landscape is dominated by the vast volcanic and geothermal areas around Rotorua and Taupo. The wild shoreline has an abundance of marine life, and the rolling countryside is dotted with fruit orchards and world class vineyards. The Islands two main cities, Auckland and Wellington are bustling with activity with year round events. In contrast the stunning South Island is dominated by the Southern Alps, which form the islands backbone creating a dramatic landscape of glaciers, lakes, rivers and fiords. There’s a real flavour of home in the Garden City of Christchurch and in the Scottish influenced Dunedin, renowned for its abundance of Victorian and Edwardian architecture. For the adventure traveller head to Queenstown the activity capital of the Island. New Zealand’s seasons are the opposite of our own so the best time to visit is in the Summer months (December – February). The North Island is generally warmer than the south with temperatures in the summer between 20-30C, while the South Island has a more temperate climate.
For more information on this spectacular country call into Travel House, Haverfordwest and speak to Faye your local New Zealand expert or give Faye a call on 01437768860. 32

The Environment TYF Adventure
The first carbon neutral adventure company in the world Ethical Consumer Magazine has conducted a survey of the outdoor gear industry and today claims that companies in the sector pay “little regard for environmental issues with most having woefully inadequate environmental and ethical reporting policies”. The Great Outdoors Gear Editor Chris Townsend has been reviewing outdoor equipment for more than two decades and has a particular interest in environmental sustainability. On seeing the report, he commented: “Overall the results of Ethical Consumer’s survey don’t surprise me. The outdoor industry has been slow to address these concerns. Progress is being made though. TYF Adventure are the first carbon neutral adventure company in the world and one of the first 50 companies to sign up to 1% for the planet which has seen us donate over £40,000 towards environmental projects in Wales. They pioneered an adventure sport called Coasteering and created a world championship kayaking event.
St Davids in the middle of May. Mixed with some talks on Biomimicry, Orange Box will present to us how they have used the Cradle to Cradle design process to make their office furniture, plus more inspiring talks by businesses already making deep rooted changes to the way they manufacture and transport their goods. Patagonia, Simple shoes, Finisterre, Gul, and howies are just a few of the businesses who will be sharing ideas and stories on what best practice looks like. TYF are already working with some of the world’s leading practitioners on closed loop / zero waste strategies including M&S, Interface, orangebox, and are working on sustainability projects with Tomorrow’s Company and Earthwatch. They realize the importance of uniting the adventure industry to ensure that the future is one to be proud of.
To celebrate our 25th birthday and mark a step change in our ambition, they have invited designers and strategists from Europe’s leading adventure businesses to work out what it would take to create an industry that’s fit for the future, with a 2025 vision on what it looks like and how to get there. They’ll be running the Project 25 launch in 34

Cosmic Ordering
Simply Cosmic
by Heidi Norman
I have always had a fascination with the stars. I think it all started many years ago, when as a young child I asked my father why he often wore a long waterproof cape with a hood. He replied that it was his ‘star gazing cape’ and he could go and lie outside, quite comfortably to watch the night sky with his binoculars. I remember finding this intriguing and still do. My interest in all things ‘starry’ has grown to include astrology and quite recently Cosmic ordering. I first heard about it a few years ago, when a friend of mine very matter of factly announced that she had cosmically ordered her red rayburn cooker! I read up on the subject and decided to give it a go. I am now a firm believer and have had a lot of interesting and fruitful experiences with cosmic ordering.
This phenomena has become very popular amongst celebrities in U.S.A and U.K. but is now being embraced by the masses. It is not a religion, nor does it involve anything negative that would compromise ones faith or beliefs and is accessible to all.. I see it as a form of prayer and feel it works on the same principles. There are many books now available on this subject, and various methods of placing your cosmic order. I do run occasional workshops and place orders within my weekly groups, where we have had fantastic results. I do have my own way of placing an order and I feel it is important to find what feels best for you. There are though some basic steps to take, and always remember to be careful what you wish for... When placing your order, make sure it comes from the heart. Your order can be anything, abundance, love, better health etc, but your intent has to be positive. The more detail the better. Thank the cosmos for delivering your order and know that it is on it’s way. Put in a time scale if you wish. Choose a time and place to make your order. I do prefer outside under the stars. How you place your order is up to you. Some people whisper to the stars, shout, sing or write their order down. You can wrap your order in ribbons or burn on paper (carefully of course). This is entirely up to you, but the key to all of this is believing, if you do, you will realise that wishing on a star can really make dreams come true! Heidi is running a Cosmic Ordering day in Haverfordwest on March 3rd. Contact her for more information: 01437 767377
