PEMBS MUSIC PREVIEW
Blues Rock Workshop and Jam, The Rugby Club, Tenby Thursday 10th March Many venues around Pembrokeshire host regular jam evenings, but these are usually acoustic sessions, aimed more towards experienced players. Now the established Cardiff Blues Rock Club is coming to Tenby with an event aimed at encouraging younger people to become involved and featuring electric sessions. Local organiser, Claudia Gunnars, told me “there will be a workshop from 5pm until 8pm when young players, both novice and more advanced, will be able to learn basic blues and rock riffs and tunes, from experienced musician. Amplifiers and PA will be provided but participants must bring their own instruments.”
BB Skone’s Local Music Show, Radio Pembrokeshire – 7pm every Sunday This is the only radio show dedicated to playing Pembrokeshire music and every week I try to feature guests live in session. For the first session this month, on Sunday 6th March, I will have in the studio Milford Haven rock band Devil’s Answer. Last time they played on the show they were so up for it they turned up in full stage make-up, all for a radio show! What a cool session it was. If you know a performer, band, duo, whatever who’d like to appear on the show contact me on info@radiopembrokeshire.com marked FAO BB. If you don’t want a live session, send me a recording and we’ll take it from there.
Following the workshop their will be a jam and gig featuring Mojo Jim & The Muddy Wolfs, Tim Crahart Band, plus Claudia & The Believers. Evening tickets are available for £5, workshops participants have free admission. Regular jam/open mic sessions in Pembrokeshire include – Monday – The Sailing Club, Tenby Tuesday – The Royal Oak, Fishguard Wednesday – The Dingle, Narberth Wednesday – The Bush Tavern, Pembroke Dock Friday – The Flying Boat, Pembroke Dock

music of 80-90 years ago; the early swing syncopations, the grit and intensity of rural blues, the bouncing rhythms of piedmont fingerpickers, the vocal antics, mannerisms and physical comedy of vaudevilleera performers. From supporting Bob Dylan in 2009 to appearing in the BBC documentary Folk America: Hollerers, Stompers & Old Time Ramblers, the Wiyo’s highenergy stage shows belie the fact that they are essentially a group of music geeks with omnivorous and expansive musical tastes ranging from early jazz to hip-hop, country blues to classic rock, New Orleans brass bands to Appalachian stringbands, The Beatles to Beck and Tom Waits. They blend their affinity with 1920’s/30’s country blues and western swing with original song-writing and post-modern experimental sound sculptures that could leave you wondering which century you’re in. Pembs Art
By Lynne-Crompton lynne-orielq@tiscali.co.uk
Another days outing could take you to Milford Haven where you can visit a fascinating exhibition at the Torch Theatre about ‘Behind the scenes’ of No Fit State Circus and National Theatre Wales who are performing from the 3rd to the 19th of March in Mundo Paralelo. The exhibition will be on from 19th February until 27th March and will include photographs, sound archives, film, costumes and drawings. You could also visit The Waterfront Gallery where there is work by resident artists on show until March 26th and then walk over to see work by Stan Rosenthal at Pure Art on the marina also on until the 26th.
M
arch is an ideal time to enjoy the promise of Spring and maybe take a few trips around the galleries that will take you through the Pembrokeshire landscape .There are a few circular journeys or a good days outing that I take my visitors on to get a flavour of the Art Scene in West Wales. Starting or finishing in Narberth at Oriel Q – Queens Hall Gallery where this month sees the end of the spectacular photographic exhibition The Last Transhumance by Dragos Lumpan on the 12th of March and the opening of John Addyman’s ‘Thought Forms’ on the 18th. This collection from John’s life’s work has been chosen by his daughter Harriet who wants to show us what an eclective, witty thought provoking artist John was .Early drawings from Walasea art school ,sketch books crammed with writings, poems ,observations and ideas go on show alongside some of his familiar watercolours and ceramics. This promises to be a real treat and you may want to spend at least an hour here and will probably want to return to delve deeper. While Narberth offers a few more places to browse art you could then head off to Tenby where Art Matters have their 10th anniversary showing a varied selection of artists who have included the word ‘ten’ in their work. Andie Clay, Carole King, David Bellamy, Glen Ibbitson and Valerie Land are just a few artists who have contributed to this exhibition. Tenby Museum shows a selection of Doug Perry’s work until the 11th of March which includes some fine examples of fifties designs for screen prints , a collection of small watercolours showing glimpses of Tenby that Doug has donated to the museum and a colourful display of Doug’s ‘Jackson Pollock’ period. Opening on March 18th at 6pm by Professor Tony Curtis is a solo show by Geoff Yeomans entitled ‘out of iron’ which will include his highly textured oil paintings based on rust and some of his fine etchings. Geoff is a superb craftsman and this exhibition will be a delight for the senses. While in Tenby you may want to pop in to some of the smaller artists run galleries such as Naomi Tydeman’s gallery to view her watercolours one of which has recently won a prestigious award, and The Harbour and The High Seas Galleries which you will find in ‘listings’.

One of my favourite journeys in Pembrokeshire is over the Preselis to drop into The Newport Collective then onto Fishguard to see what’s on in West Wales Arts and then onto Workshop Wales before heading off to St Davids where there are quite a few galleries to visit including Oriel Y Parc where there is a collection from The National Museum of Wales including a superb painting by Ceri Richards. You could choose to stop off at Solva, back to Haverfordwest or take a few diversions to see more private galleries which you can find in ‘listings’ or in The Art and Craft Guide from Pembrokeshire council. So much art, so many talented artists .. and this is just in our lovely Pembrokeshire! Enjoy! Lynne

Planning a wedding is one of the most exciting and rewarding things a person will ever do, but it is also one of the most stressful. As a wedding coordinator I see all of the excitement and frustrations that a bride goes through. The following is a list of tips that I give brides that I work with. We have found them very helpful, and I believe you will too. 1. Start planning as early as possible. Places and service providers are booked earlier and earlier each year. So to insure that you get exactly what you want, start early. It also gives you plenty of time to find investigate other options if your first choice does not work out. 2. Know your service providers. The reputation of the service providers you choose is of the utmost importance. Avoid unpleasant surprises on the day of your wedding by selecting service providers with impeccable records. 3. Put everything in writing. When you book your service providers, anything that you discuss, including special arrangements or deals, that you want included in your package for the quoted price make certain is written in the contract. People can’t remember promises they made to you a year ago verbally, so make sure all the details are written in the signed contract. 4. Be organized. In order to avoid feeling overwhelmed by the number of tasks ahead of you, stay organized. Make an action plan by week of what you are going to do, and keep track of progress. This will help you to keep your thoughts and plans in order. 5. Pursue proper etiquette. Following proper etiquette has two advantages. Firstly, you will avoid embarrassing social blunders that can ruin your most special day. Secondly, since weddings are an emotional event for everyone involved, not just the bride and groom, it is important to keep all relevant parties happy and excited. By following the proper rules of etiquette you can never go wrong. People cannot argue with what is right! 6. Invite people to participate in your wedding party because they care about you, not out of obligation. I can’t tell you how often a bride asks someone to be in her wedding out of obligation, and is only frustrated by that individual’s lack of interest and participation. This is the one of the most important days of your life. Only involve people who genuinely share in your happiness and love. If they don’t, there is no way they can behave the way you might expect them to. It is impossible. 7. Watch your budget. It is very easy to get drawn into spending more on your wedding than you planned or may be able to. There are so many wonderful choices available to brides that you should not have to put yourself in debt to have the wedding you want. If you start out with a budget, stick to it and find alternatives that allow you to do that. You do not want to start your new life with your partner paying off wedding bills for years to come! 8. Compromise. Knowing how to compromise will save a lot of stress through the planning process. You, your groom, and families all should enjoy the wedding and be proud of it. While the bride and groom should do what makes them happy, be open to suggestions and sensitive to the feelings of those around you. If you disagree with their recommendations, speak about it calmly and diplomatically until an understanding is reached. It will make the day more enjoyable for all! 9. Confirm and follow-up. Make sure as the date gets closer, about 2 months before, that you follow-up with your service providers such as the band, limos, photographer, florist, and videographer to confirm your arrangements, provide any last minute instructions, and reiterate timing of all activities. It will make you feel secure and will insure that they understand your expectations. 10. Relax and enjoy! It is a fun, happy, beautiful time. Do not let the planning process mask that for you. Take moments to step back and enjoy what is happening. Especially the day of your wedding, just enjoy it. At that point, you have done all you can and it is in the hands of the trustworthy people you have hired
Oriel Y Parc
Let the landscape inspire you at Oriel y Parc
Soon the smell of cut grass, the familiar sight of blankets of bluebells and the sound of children paddling in the waves will surround us again. Spring is in the air and life seems just that little bit lighter. It’s a perfect time to be out exploring the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. To help you discover more of the piece of paradise that’s right on your doorstep, take a trip to Oriel y Parc Gallery and Visitor Centre in St Davids. It’s free, its galleries are brimming with paintings and artefacts from the collections of Amgeuddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales, and it’s also a Visitor Centre and shop. The gallery is run by the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority in partnership with the National Museum. The current exhibition, which includes a painting of Tenby Harbour by Lucian Freud, runs until Saturday April 2nd.
We’re proud to be hosting a collection of paintings by Australian artist and entertainer Rolf Harris. Rolf created four paintings for the current BBC One Wales TV series Rolf on Welsh Art. One of the works was in the style of British artist Graham Sutherland, who was inspired by the Pembrokeshire landscape and whose work is on permanent display at Oriel y Parc. It features in the final episode on Wednesday March 9th at 7.30pm. Opening hours: 10am to 4.30pm (main gallery closed between 1pm and 2pm but Rolf Harris’ paintings are in the upstairs gallery which remains open). Tel: 01437 720392 Website: www.orielyparc.co.uk
The new exhibition opening on Saturday April 16th, Stories from the Sea: Above, Below and Beyond the Tide, features major art works from the historic to the contemporary and includes an amazing collection of Blaschka glass sea creatures. Oriel y Parc also hosts exhibitions by local artists, with the opportunity to buy original works. The National Park Authority hopes that by visiting Oriel y Parc and seeing how the Pembrokeshire landscape has inspired artists over centuries, you’ll be inspired to explore it for yourself. Can you tell what it is yet?

These animals take us through a multitude of Fables involving wily wolves, dopey dogs, haring hares, flattering foxes and even silly humans. As relevant now as they were centuries ago, these bite-sized tales are knockabout and slapstick, but remaining true to the spirit of Aesop. Salsa Fever Sweeps Pembrokeshire
In the last few months an epidemic has been growing and spreading across Pembrokeshire… Salsa Fever. Although this Fever has already taken hold in many other areas, it seems Pembrokeshire has been immune except for a couple of small outbreaks over the last few years, but now it seems, This hot sensual dance is here to stay!! So what is this Fever and what are its origins?
Salsa is a partner dance of 6 steps over eight counts of music, with the 4th and 8th count being either a pause or a tap of the toe on the floor. It is a distillation and blend of many different Latin and Afro-Caribbean dances. Each of which have played a large part in its evolution. Salsa occurred with variations in many countries such as Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Colombia and Porto Rico each adding its own unique variations in an attempt to call it their own. Bands from some of these countries took their music to Mexico and shortly after, a similar movement to New York occurred. New York created the term “Salsa”, but it did not create the dance. The term became popular as nickname to refer to a variety of different music, from several countries of Hispanic influence: Rumba, Són Montuno, Guaracha, Mambo, Cha cha cha, Charanga, Cumbia, & Merengue, among others. So just like a tree, Salsa has many roots and many branches, but one trunk that unites us all. Salsa has its roots within all of us. If you think that a single place can take the credit for the existence of Salsa, you are wrong. And if you think that one style of dance is better, again you are mistaken.
None is better, only different. Fortunately there is a cure… learn to Dance!!!! Mas Caliente Salsa brings you classes in Salsa and these lessons rapidly becoming the largest and most popular in the area, with classes 5 nights a week, catering for all levels of Salsa. Run by Julian (Jules) Phillips (aka Ondulado), who has been dancing salsa since 1998 and was a Finalist in the UK Salsa Championships 2000 before heading off to live in France and Spain. He learnt from some the UK’s finest Salsa teachers and also from his numerous trips to Colombia, New York and even Africa. He has conducted classes for up to 2000 people at clubs, restaurants and Salsa weekends in the UK, France, Spain, Holland, USA and South America and demonstrations in London for groups ranging from simple weddings to the annual parties of corporations such as IBM, Microsoft and Barclays bank. He takes pride in his classes and his passion for this sexy latin dance shines through into the relaxed and fun manner of his presentation and the amazing ambience created for his students Anyone can dance salsa, even if you think you have 2 left feet. Age, Height, weight, cultural backgrounds are all forgotten when you step onto the dance floor and get involved in the passion that is salsa. It is not how good you dance, it is how good it makes you feel!!! Film Reviews
By Stefan Mohamed www.themobox.blogspot.com
True Grit (15)
Paul (15) Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are a very talented pair, and so inherently likeable that it’s often difficult to criticise them. So I’m sad to say that their latest collaboration, in which they play a pair of geeks who meet a foul-mouthed alien, is a disappointment. To be fair, the blame shouldn’t be levelled entirely at them. The film smells of compromise, of clueless Hollywood suits leaning in and tweaking Pegg and Frost’s idiosyncratic vision into a softer, more mainstream piece that will appeal to the easily-satisfied masses they’re so dementedly keen to pander to. This has simply led to an uneven film, in which the well-observed, inventive and sometimes crude character humour jarrs with feel good moralising, straightforward family adventuring and broader jokes that end up falling a bit flat. That said, “Paul” is still a fun, worthwhile couple of hours to spend at the cinema. Pegg and Frost are great value as always, and Paul himself is superbly realised, from the flawless CGI to Seth Rogen’s vocal performance, which manages the incredible feat of being both likeable and convincing. There are plenty of clever in-jokes for geeks and fans, and many others that hit the mark and inspire the belly laughs you were expecting, and when the film finally kicks into gear (which admittedly takes ages) it’s pretty exciting. It’s just a shame that what should have been a surreal, original, oddball piece with lots of swearing ends up being a slightly surreal, formulaic adventure with lots of swearing. Definitely worth a watch, but unlike “Shaun of the Dead” and “Hot Fuzz”, definitely not an essential rewatch.
The “new Coen Brothers film” has become an annual event, and with their latest they’ve taken on the not inconsiderable task of remaking one of John Wayne’s most iconic Westerns. Well, sort of. Technically they’re doing a second adaptation of the book on which the original was based. But hey, I say potato, you say remake. Fabulous newcomer Hailee Steinfield plays Mattie Ross, a tough-as-nails frontier gal who enlists the help of grizzled marshall Rooster Cogburn (a brilliant, semi-comprehensible performance from Jeff Bridges) to track down the man who murdered her father, and together they adventure through snow, snakes, gunfighters, a man with a bear on his head, a man who can only make chicken noises and Matt Damon with a big moustache and a speech impediment. What a strange film this is. On the one hand it’s as technically flawless as you’d expect from the Coens, their distinctive eye giving the iconic locations an arresting combination of grit and grandeur. The performances are great, with only occasional lapses into caricature (although an abundance of Southern slurs and authentic dialogue will mean that you’ll only understand about fifty per cent of what’s being said), and it’s funny, exciting and occasionally moving. But the Coens’ characteristic combination of brutality and oddness is strangely off-kilter here, resulting in a film in which sudden bursts of ultraviolence sit uncomfortably with too-quirky character moments. It makes “True Grit” slightly uneven, and means that you’re never quite as in the moment as you should be. However, there is definitely much more to like here than to dislike. The interplay between Steinfield and Bridges is the film’s saving grace, and their dynamic is absolutely spot-on. The film surrounding them may be tonally bizarre, but who cares when the performances are this much fun? In the words of Rooster Cogburn, “slur slur grr grr something something something”.

Health & Fitness Set Your Sights L
ast month we talked of making a commitment to exercise, being honest with yourself and understanding that there is no easy ride to getting fit and losing weight. This month we are concentrating on specific aims and how to achieve them. So first of all, give yourself a target. It will not matter how great or small that target is but it is a good idea to make it realistic and make it something that you can achieve. You will get a huge sense of achievement and motivation by small increases in performance but you will also get disillusioned if your sights are set too high and you keep failing. The rule is small gradual improvements over a long period of time. Once your target has been set then you will need a training programme to help you achieve it and that regime has to be specific to your needs and your aims. So if you are going to run a marathon then you need to run a lot, if you plan to row across the Irish sea then you should row a lot! Sounds obvious but many people make the mistake of not training for what they eventually want to do.
By Martin James Martin James Health Club, Kilgetty
you will feel good and you will achieve your aims. I always tell customers who come to my club that if you don’t feel better going out of the door than you did when you came in then something is not right and its usually one of three reasons, either they didn’t work hard enough to get that feel good factor, maybe they worked too hard and felt sick and really exhausted afterwards or maybe they were already feeling ill before coming to the club. So remember if you don’t feel energized more alive and just generally better then something is wrong. Exercise will make you feel good, perhaps not when your doing it! But certainly after you have finished. So how do I know if I am training at the right Intensity? There are two basic methods. First imagine a scale from 1 to 10 where 1 is fast asleep and 10 is working the hardest you have ever done. As a stating point you need to work at 5, 6, or 7 on that imaginary scale and as you become fitter maybe move up to 8 or 9. The problem with this scale is that everyone has a different idea of how hard they think they are working so a more scientific approach is to train according to your heart rate. As you train your heart rate rises and everyone has a specific heart rate target. This type of training makes it far more accurate and specific to the individual.
Getting Started There are some basic ground rules to start and many people refer to the FIT principle to help explain where to begin. The word FIT refers to Frequency Intensity and Time. The latest government recommendations are 5 exercise sessions per week for 30 minutes to remain reasonably fit. The Frequency and Time elements are easy to quantify but it’s the Intensity factor that is crucial to the success of any programme. It’s basically how hard you have to work to get a result. If you get the Intensity right then
Next month we work out what your heart rate should be when training but if you cant wait till then get down to your local Health Club or Local Authority Leisure Centre to find out.

16th – 20th June Pembrey Country Park, South Wales www.beachbreaklive.com
THE RETURN OF THE UK’S BIGGEST STUDENT FESTIVAL - BEACH BREAK LIVE Following a spectacular sell out 2010 event, the UK’s biggest student festival Beach Break Live is back on June Last year saw thousands of students flock to the stunning shores of Pembrey Country Park in South Wales for four sandy days and starry nights of cutting edge music, sun basking and memory making. Now entering its 5th year, Beach Break will play host to a whopping 20,000 students and promises to be “the year of the spectacular”. For the first time, the festival will be held over a weekend which will allow more graduates to unite old clans and relive their student days in true Beach Break fashion! Previous BBL acts have included the likes of grime don Dizzee Rascal, ethereal pop starlet Ellie Goulding, afro-beat preppy boys Vampire Weekend, prince of pop Calvin Harris and a club sapping DJ line up that makes Fabric look thread bare. The acts for 2011 look set to raise the (beach) bar even higher to deliver the best BBL party ever! Watch this space. The killer line up is not the only jewel in BBL’s sandy crown. Boasting the most beautiful festival site in the UK, the BBL experience comes complete with 4 miles of pristine silky white sand, a dry ski slope (which they cover in snow, of course!), horse riding, a toboggan run and loads more! Set against the back drop of this stunning sea view location, you will also find all manner of beachside merry making. From parkour to volleyball and vintage fairground rides to surfing lessons - what more could you ask for?Last year, Early Bird tickets sold out in record time causing the Beach Break server to crash. With last years sun drenched success fresh in their minds and the latest snap of arctic weather, it’s a safe bet that tickets for this year’s festie are going to fly out, so get yours now to avoid disappointment! www.beachbreaklive.com
