This is the only radio show dedicate d to playing Pembrokeshire music and every wee k I try to feature guests live in session.
CD REVIEW
Rural ‘Ruralisms’ Rural began in 2010 as the vision of two ever-experimenting musicians Jethro Chaplin (owner of Mwnci Studios) and Jason Phillips (formerly of Johnny Action Finger), their DJ shows of high energy dance floor fillers, developed at wild parties here in west Wales, with their wobbling basslines, cutting leads, house builds and dubstep drops, guaranteed a mind-blowing set, and some of the tunes they made available on line.
If you know a performer, band, duo, who’d like to appear on the show whatever contact me on info@radiopembrokeshire.com mar BB. If you don’t want a live session, ked FAO recording and we’ll take it from ther send me a e.
This 2-person, mainly studio, project quickly and successfully developed into something much bigger, with Rural taking their tracks to bigger stages as a live band consisting of five members – and a lot of noise. At the heart of the live sound is the techno jiggerypokery tweaked by Jethro and Jason. Erin (Rosie Probert) Mathias and Harry Keyworth deliver catchy vocal melodies, with Harry serving up blistering guitar riffs. Gurney Peterson’s live drums keep any audience dancing. Rural take a highly original slant on modern dance music. Now they have successfully transferred their live shows onto CD with the release of their five track, self-penned mini-album ‘Ruralisms’. Expertly produced, as one would expect from the owner of one of Wales’ best studios, Rural’s debut is an exciting and innovative racket of a record. Why not step out to their dubstep drubbing and keep it rural? Further info from www.ruralsound.co.uk

Bex Marshall, The Queens Hall, Narberth – Saturday 9th July A year or so ago, ensconced at home with a glass of Chateau Paraffino to hand and the voice of whispering Bob Harris for company on Radio 2, I was, if not exactly blown away (for clichés are not my cup of tea, neither do I drink at the mug of mixed metaphors come to think of it), certainly I was buffeted by Bex. Out of my radio came the most stunning rasping voice accompanied by astonishing slide guitar delivering a tune that was at once both poignant and life-affirming. Listening intently I discovered the singer was Bex Marshall and Bob was rightly singing the praises of this young woman who clearly had roots in country music but had absorbed many other styles too. As serendipity would have it, a few days later I heard Bex Marshall again, on Paul Jones’ Radio 2 R ‘n’ B show, and this time her blues roots were showing though the dynamism of her performance was as delightful as before. A few months and a spate of arm twisting later, I managed to convince Tenby Blues Festival Committee to book her for last November’s festival where she was one of the undoubted highlights of the whole weekend. Now she is returning to the county, to The Queens Hall, Narberth, on Saturday 9th July, this time with her full band. Expect a unique explosion of “blue hot acoustic slide roots rock, poker twisted with a whipping of Bluegrass….bringing blues poetry in an instrumental turbine of melody and fearless playing.” Oh, and she has a finely honed wit and a most lovely hat too. Talking of clichés, as I was earlier, many gigs are
FOCUS ON
The Numbers Racket The Numbers Racket is a seven piece band dedicated to performing the best in jump jive, R ‘n’ B, and swing music from the 1940s to the present day. A gorgeous, mainly Zoot-suited, visual spectacle, the band invariably set the dance floor alight as soon as they begin playing. If you are familiar with Louis Jordan’s classic ‘Caldonia’ then you’ll have some idea of the sort of the music they play, and even if you aren’t, you are in for a real treat when you hear them perform live. They have also released two albums which mix covers with self-penned tunes. The original band members are Big Mo on vocals and harmonica, Johnny Davies on guitar, Stan Scrivener on bass, Nino Consolo on percussion, Dom Norcross on sax, and Jason Osborne on trombone, their collective CV reading like a Who’s Who of Pembrokeshire bands, they’ve been in (and in some cases still are!) such cracking combos as The Mean Mistreaters, Organic, Angelfish, and The Dom Norcross Quartet. These wizened and not so wizened veterans of the local music scene, have recently added young songstress Elaina Hoss, the ‘pocket rocket’, to the band, and she has injected a new level of excitement and appeal to the outfit. The level of musicianship and professionalism in the band is commensurate with their status as one of the UK’s most popular swing combos but it is the passion, wit and sheer unadulterated stuff strutting dynamism of their shows that’ll bring joy to even the most jaded. So writes a grumpy old man! Check out www.thenumbersracket.com for more information.
advertised as “not to be missed”. Well, of course, you can miss this one if you want. But if you do I suggest your life might be as empty as a politician’s promise. Support acts are Mr H and Carl Griffiths (who will play a set of Robert Johnson songs, fittingly on the 100th anniversary of the birth of the legendary blues guitarist who influenced the likes of Eric Clapton and The Rolling Stones). Tickets, priced @£10/£9 are available from Span Arts (01834 869323).

Pembs Art
By Lynne Crompton lynne-orielq@tiscali.co.uk
Texhibiting here are not very many spaces in Pem-
brokeshire. Some small commercial galleries that are obliged to sell work that makes money ,catering for tourists and selling paintings based on the beauty of our surroundings and some no better than churning out decorative superficial weak daubs that do a disservice to the word ART. Why the outburst ? I’m so frustrated that good artists do not get the support they deserve and that generally too many people buy something ’to match the curtains’ or buy prints from places like Ikea so they don’t have to make decisions on what is art or trust in their own taste. I want people to visit as many galleries as possible and question what is on show and why they like or dislike something. This Summer there is the opportunity to see mixed ‘open’ shows, a chance to look , question what’s on display and to support artists that you feel deserve a sale. The ‘Open’ Summer show in Oriel Q shows a mixed bag and presents a good opportunity to visit and revisit during the next month and then come to the auction to see what people will bid for on Sunday 31st July at 2.30. You can view all exhibits online: www.orielqueenshallgallery.org. uk Also worth checking out this month is The Waterfront Gallery, Milford, St Dogmaels, Oriel Myrddin, Carmarthen and the open studios that can be found in the Art and Craft guide and on the guide on the following page. Not in Pembrokeshire, but of Pembrokeshire is Tim Davies from Haverfordwest who is the artist chosen to represent Wales at the Venice Biennale this year. He certainly did us proud ! He created two new videos based on his experience of Venice, one of which was called ‘Drift’ and was a film of his hand trailing the water with reflections of Venetian buildings distorted
14
by the movement. Very simple but so spiritual and powerful. The other new one was of him moving through the old Frari, empty yet full of history and with the sounds of the bells of Venice resonating and implying a melancholy sense of what was there. His cadet videos which have been on tour in Wales also use simplicity and the sound of wind in the ceremonial flags create a powerful message of poignancy, symbols of war and the pity of youth and what will be lost. One room housed a display of the series of bridges with the background scratched away leaving them suspended begging the question from where and to where. Tim’s art questions the meaning of life and is capable of moving you leaving you with a sense of compassion for man’s fraility. He will be talking about his work in Oriel Q in October, but for now I think we should be proud that this local artist has done so well and put Pembrokeshire on the map. Lynne

The show is packed with laughter, romance and a galleon-full of memorable lyrics such as To be a Pirate King!, Modern Major General and A Policeman’s Lot is Not a Happy One. But Boggis, Bunce and Bean are not just any farmers - they are the cruellest, meanest and most ruthless farmers you could ever meet, and they are determined to put a stop to Mr Fox once and for all. As they rev up their mechanical diggers and load their guns, Mr Fox’s chances are slim at best... Or will the sharpest wit win? Following 2010’s highly acclaimed production of James and the Giant Peach and a sensational sellout season, Illyria returns with an even BIGGER Dahl classic! Canolfan Natur Cymru Welsh Wildlife Centre, Cilgerran. 4pm. £9/£11/£13.

Film Reviews
By Catherine Dunstan
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES (12A) At last! The fourth installment of the swashbuckling saga is here! As you’d expect, it’s fit to bursting with pirates in dazzling attire, a menagerie of beards and more camera focus of Johnny Depp than you can shake a sword at - which is no bad thing. As everyone’s favourite drunkard Captain Jack Sparrow, Depp dazzles. With his new nemesis, the poisonous pirate Blackbeard in tow, we follow Captain Jack and the newly peg-legged Barbossa on their quest to find the Fountain of Youth. Chuck in a few mermaids, monsters and the odd clergyman and you’ve got a crew worthy of Davy Jones. Oh wait…
Sadly, the plot does suffer from the loss of major characters Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann from the previous instalments. There is less suspense and lust-fuelled double-crossing to keep you on the edge of your seat. However there is the addition of Penelope Cruz as Blackbeard’s saucy daughter who keeps hearts afloat on the stranger tides! There’s great action and stunning sets- you may get an overpowering urge to commandeer your own ship! It’s a definite must-see for fans, but catch it in 2D, the 3D doesn’t add much and the colour isn’t as bright. Get tickets you scallywags! Yo-ho!
THE HANGOVER 2 (15) If you’ve seen the first one, you’ve seen this one. Well, the jokes are slightly more risqué and there’s the addition of a drug-dealing, denim-wearing monkey – but this film is more a remake than a sequel. Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis are back as Phil, Stu and Alan who are off on a stag-do again – this time in Thailand. And yes, you guessed it! Somebody is missing and nobody has any idea what happened the night before. So it’s happened to the same guys again? Unbelievable perhaps, but they’ve got just enough charm to pull it off. Just. Galifianakis is hilarious once again as the ridiculous, socially-inept Stu. He is definitely a highlight and pulls some great one-liners. Though the script tends to depend too much on such jokes and rides through on the success of the first film as we already love the characters. The problem is, we’ve already had those laughs and are waiting for surprises and developments that never arrive. The stag-do is filmed on location in Bangkok, which certainly gives the film a darker, nervy edge. As the locals say, “You will lose yourself to Bangkok”, but apart from a regrettable tattoo and a run-in with a transvestite not much is made out of this goldmine of a set. But hey, the Wolfpack is still as loveable and there are some good laughs. It’s a nice easy watch. – I’d recommend it on a hangover…

LEO July 24-August 23 You are in your element as the weather heats up and you can bask in the sunshine. You purr like a happy cat this month as your social calendar fills up. VIRGO August 24-Sept 23 The full moon on the 15th gives you the opportunity to put mistakes behind you and move on to a fresh start. The last week of July is influenced by Mercury and will see new plans and ideas take off! You may find yourself writing messages from the heart which are overdue and much appreciated. LIBRA Sept-24-Oct 23 Saturn plays a major role this month for librans. You may find that you feel a little weighed down with practical matters, but these have to be confronted and sorted out. You will feel that you have learnt a valuable and helpful lesson by the end of the month. A good time for a clear out too! SCORPIO Oct 24-Nov 22 The moon on the 9th and 10th bring an opportunity for you to shine and see ideas come to fruition. You have felt a little conflicted lately regarding a friendship. You will assert yourself and establish how you feel without causing offence. Others look up to you and are beginning to see how much you truly shine! SAGITTARIUS Nov 23-Dec 21 Two new moons this month make an ideal time for you to put much needed plans into action. Two chances to make things right. The full moon on the 15 will help you decide how to achieve this. A little more communication from the heart may be involved as you reflect on your recent harshness towards a loved one.

CAPRICORN Dec 22-Jan 20 Pluto is with you for the entire month and is retrograde. This means you may find yourself thinking more deeply about your life and facing a few fears. This can be a good time to put past mistakes behind you and confront what went wrong so you won’t do it again. This process will leave you feeling stronger and enlightened! AQUARIUS Jan 21-Feb 19 Poor Aquarius, you are feeling a little sorry for your self this month as the pressure of a dominating and controlling loved one reaches boiling point. Try to express your need for more space, they mean well but can’t see how miserable it makes you feel. You are a free spirit and want to soar! PISCES Feb 20-March 20 Neptune is retrograde this month and may leave you feeling a little lost regarding relationships. You need to make your mind up and choose who and what truly makes you happy. The two new moons in july give you the opportunity for making a new start. Try not to think too deeply though, all will work out just fine. ARIES March 21-April 20 With the two new moons in July on the 1st and 30th you have a double chance to put things right, especially where love is concerned. Try to be more romantic, you may find yourself enjoying the outcome! Work offers you plenty of opportunities, and you remain keen to impress, try not to rub colleagues up the wrong way though or tread on them on your way up! TAURUS April 21-May 21 Poor taurus, you like to give out advice but rarely take it. Perhaps if you did you would not be in such an unhappy situation, those around you can see through your charade and can see your vulnerability. You are only deluding yourself, and what does that achieve. Be proud of who you really are under that very unconvincing mask! GEMINI May 22-June 21 Try to see all that you have and stop focusing on what you think you need to make your life more complete. Mars and venus influence you this month so prepare for some passion and conflict in close relationships. Try to think of others a little more this month and give a little more than usual. Selfish desires will backfire!
