Burnett’s Hill Calvinistic Methodist Chapel is a rare and important survival of early Pembrokeshire chapel architecture. Built in cottage style in 1812 to serve the coal-mining community of Landshipping and Martletwy, it has been little altered over the years and has a timeless charm all of its own. Like so many Welsh chapels, Burnett’s Hill was forced to close in the 1980s for want of a congregation, and it might have become a complete ruin but for the intervention of a group of local people who formed themselves into the Friends of Burnett’s Hill Chapel and set about saving the building. The chapel seats 100 people and has proved to be an ideal concert hall, hosting sell-out performances by - among others - John Renbourne, Dan Cassidy’s Swing Quartet, and Mexican guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela. Visiting the chapel itself is quite an experience, a map, torch and cushion being essential equipment for all giggoers! And of course it is not far from the atmospheric pub on Cresswell Quay where people gather after the gigs. On Thursday 19th April, The Groanbox Boys return to the Chapel. Their show is a spectacular event, one press report described them thus Folk, Blues, Hillbilly, Old Time and Country, Zydeco, with a zest of Gypsy music: it’s smooth’n’rough, it’s stompin’, it’s unexpected, and is said to have ‘the power to energize everyone who comes close’ . It is almost certain to sell-out, so reserve your tickets now from Pembroke Bookshop on 01646 685144.

MUSIC REVIEW
Paper Aeroplanes ‘We Are Ghosts’ CD Sarah Howells, of Milford Haven, formed Halflight with Cardigan musician Richard Llewellyn in 2005. Both Sarah and Richard were well known on the west Wales music circuit – Sarah with Epik and Jylt, Richard with Cartoon and Julie Murphy’s band. After several critically acclaimed CD releases and performing throughout the UK, they changed the name of the band to Paper Aeroplanes since when their career has taken flight. Their debut album, The Day We Ran Into The Sea, was a well produced, commercial collection of their gorgeous songs, and gained frequent airplay on national radio. Since the album’s release in March 2010, Paper Aeroplanes have toured extensively in the USA and Europe. This month they released their second album, We Are Ghosts, which again highlights the duo’s accomplished and melancholic-tinged acoustic music centred around Sarah’s distinctive, heartfelt vocals. This album is more stripped down, less overtly produced than their first and is all the better for it. The duo’s songwriting and arranging has matured though they remain true to their personal vision. Their sound reminds me very much of the work of Lucinda Williams, with all those delicious bitter sweet nuances. At a time when alt.Folk (or whatever it is called by under assistant promotions men this month) is all the rage and lesser bands are getting constant media attention, Paper Aeroplanes are the real deal.

Chailo Sim ‘Replete’ CD Another Pembrokeshire band tagged with the label alt.Folk, Chailo Sim released their gorgeous nine track debut album at the end of last year but it is only now that it is receiving airplay on a number of national radio stations. Deservedly so for this is a beautifully crafted set of delicious tunes seemingly effortlessly plucked out of the wild Pembrokeshire air. The five band members create an understated yet energetic soundscape to carry the blissful, melancholic vocals of Nayfe SJ, whose singing reminds me of both Bon Iver and the late John Martyn yet sounds distinctively his own.
A SPECIALIST SELECTION OF JAZZ, BLUES AND WORLD CDS & DVDS 26 Market Street, Haverfordwest, Pembs SA61 1NH OPEN MONDAY TO SATURDAY
01437 769618
Chailo Sim have a number of festival gigs lined up but their next appearance in their home Shire is at The Queens Hall, Narberth on Sunday 8th May when they support Ben Howard in a Surfers Against Sewage promotion.
Jazz is Spanning the country by Declan Conolly Jazz and blues are the only art forms to come out of America in the last century, and are now appreciated all over the world. Jazz can do the same job as a painting in revealing the soul of the artist and describing the world seen through their eyes. “Anyone who doesn’t like jazz has no real feeling for music or people...” Richard Burton may have put it a little strongly in John Osborne’s Look Back In Anger, but fans remain devoted to jazz well over a century after it first emerged from the musical melting pot of New Orleans. With names like Davis, Williams, Jones and Evans in the list of all time greats, maybe it’s not surprising that jazz has remained popular in Wales right to this day, although the only jazz heroes we can really lay claim to are the late pianists Bill Evans, a second-generation Welshman from New Jersey, and Dill Jones from Carmarthenshire. But with present day stars like singer Ian Shaw, multi-instrumentalist Huw Warren and pianists Geoff Eales and Gwilm Symcock,Welsh jazz is making waves on a global scale. The jazz scene is pretty vibrant in Wales, with dozens of pubs, clubs and other venues catering for
every taste from modern to mainstream, and trad to funkier flavours in a series of weekly, monthly or one-off events. In Cardiff and Swansea you can see live jazz most nights of the week - sometimes with a choice of gigs - while north east Wales benefits from being at the southern edge of the Merseysippi delta. Many Welsh venues regularly welcome stars of the UK jazz scene as an important part of their programmes. And at adventurous venues like Pontardawe Arts Centre and Queens Hall in Narberth, Pembrokeshire, your jazz is likely to come with a world music flavour. IN the past Narberth has welcomed performances from Stan Tracy, Andy Shepard and Alan Barnes among others. Nowadays the jazz in Narberth can be found at The Dingle Club Jesse Road on the first Wednesday of every month. Span Arts has been presenting their ‘Spanjazz’ sessions there for over one year and for many years before that in other venues in Narberth and H’west.

your way to Tenby to see Geoff Yeoman’s exhibition in the museum. His nickname Geoff the rust was given him after he produced numerous paintings of rusty boats and flaky peeling painted doors and his love of textures again can be seen in this body of work. On until the 17th of April, another show worth making the journey for. Opening on April 1st at Picton Castle Gallery is an interesting exhibition by Ian Jacob called In Sutherland’s Footsteps. Ian lives in Llangwm overlooking the estuary where Sutherland was inspired and he has also studied tree forms and driftwood and used the patterns of the land to create compositions using photomontage, paint, collage and balsawood. His vibrant palette and bold execution certainly makes this work stand out from the usual landscape paintings seen in Pembrokeshire and again should be on your list to see this month. Happy viewing ! scape watercolourists, teachers and thinkers. Much of the work on show has never been exhibited before. Early, experimental graphics, sketchbooks and paintings have been chosen by his daughter Harriet from the huge amount of work that was still in John Addyman’s studio when he died in 2006. Work that spans a 60 year long career, including paintings , drawings, collages and prints, ceramics and sketchbooks have been discovered by his family and include intimate thoughts, deliberations, observations and reflections that show the wit and wisdom of this original artist . His knowledge of art and life, his integrity and his passion are revealed in this wonderful exhibition. You may want to make more than one visit as there is so much to savour, including a studio set up in Oriel Fach that invites you into the mind of the artist, and with a clever use of technology two dvds run continually with pages of sketchbooks being turned over allowing you to view thousands of pages. Rango (PG) I know what you may be thinking. You may be thinking what I was thinking. Something like oh God not another mediocre CGI adventure with an all-star cast slumming it as wacky anthropomorphized critters. What with rabbit adventure “Hop”, bird comedy “Rio” and “A Turtle’s Tale”, which is about badgers or something, the market is saturated. Which means “Rango” should be trumpeted from the rooftops at deafening volumes, because it’s brilliant. Johnny Depp voices the titular lizard, whose Never Let Me Go (12A) comfy existence is literally shattered when his tank falls from his owners’ car. After wanAs the poster suggests, this is a love story. There’s dering through the desert, Rango finds Dirt, teenage jealousy, a love triangle and a frienda backwater town populated by eccentric ship between two girls that is dragged through insects and animals. A few white lies later the gutter. But throw in another theme, genetic and he’s made sheriff... and his problems exploration, and what you can expect from this are just beginning. “Rango” is fantastic. The film is something else altogether. Based on the cast, including Bill Nighy as a gun-tailed ratnovel by Kazuo Ishiguro, this film is set in an altlesnake, are great. It is an artistically composed drama, and some enjoyably bizarre, trippy asides, and the revelation that things aren’t all what they and even the obligatory moral is delivered seem is revealed without the shock or horror you subtly. Health & Fitness Heart Rate Training
Last month we talked of training at the right intensity to get the best results from your exercise routine. The most scientific method is to train at various heart rate zones. This makes the training very personal and specific to the individual. After all if you are going to make the effort to train you may as well ensure that it is actually doing you some good, so work out your personal heart rate zones by following this simple formula. Start with a figure of 220 and take your age away from it. The figure you are left with is your predicted maximum heart rate in beats per minute. I have to emphasise that this figure is a predicted figure and you may find your heart rate will achieve as much as 20 beats higher or lower but this formula is usually fairly accurate for the majority of people. Once you know your maximum heart rate you can work at percentages of that to achieve a training effect that will really do you some good. Lets look at an example: A forty year old 220 – 40 = 180 Predicted maximum heart rate. 65% of 180 = 117 This is sometimes termed the Fat Burning Zone. 80% of 180 = 144 This is sometimes termed the Cardio Zone Depending on how you may be feeling you may want to work harder in your Cardio Zone at 144 beats per minute or if you start to train on a more frequent basis you may

want to train one day hard then one day easier in your Fat burning zone of 117 beats per minute. As you get fitter you may want to work at higher percentages. The idea is to warm up slowly and get your heart rate up to your zone over a period of 5 to 15 minutes, once you are in your zone try and keep there for another 10 to 30 minutes and then cool down for a further 5 minutes. You may ask how on earth do I check my heart rate whilst training and it is a valid question, however, most Health Clubs will have equipment that can monitor your heart rate while you train and if you get quite serious about training you can purchase a good heart rate monitor and chest strap that will display your heart rate on a watch. So to recap you have to train at the right intensity for exercise to be effective and the best way of determining whether you are at the right intensity is to monitor your heart rate whilst training. There is no cheating your heart rate, it will let you know precisely how hard you are working. The other major benefit of heart training is that as you get fitter you have to work harder to achieve the same heart rate so it continuously pushes you to greater things. Enjoy your training and remember you should feel better in every way because of it. That’s as long as you are training at the right Intensity!

CAPE TOWN Cape Town is famous for a variety of attractions that stretch from the famous Table Mountain all the way down to the sea. It has often been rated as one of the places to visit before you die, and it is not hard to see why when you see its spectacular mountains, gorgeous coastline and natural and unique fauna. Robben Island, Cape Peninsula, the Winelands, V & A Waterfront, Table Mountain are just a few of the must see places in this beautiful region. Table Mountain rises 1,000 metres above the city; the cable car ride to the top rotates 360 degrees during its climb so you get views to all sides. As a general rule thumb if you can see the mountain then the cable car will be running although high winds will close the mountain. The Victoria and Alfred Waterfront is home to over 400 shops and over 80 restaurants ranging from popular fast food outlets to exquisite seafood restaurants. Some of Cape Town’s more up market hotels can be found here, including Cape Grace and One&Only Cape Town or for families stay in one of the many luxury private apartments located on the waterfront. Based in the waterfront is the City Sightseeing Bus probably the best way to see Cape Town – just hop on and off at the stops to experience the centre of Cape Town and the surrounding area. From the Waterfront you can take a boat to visit Robben Island, where the world’s most famous

prisoner Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years. Tours of the prison are performed by former inmates and are very popular so it is advisable to book in advance. A popular day trip is a drive down the Cape Peninsula, drive through the up market areas of Clifton and Camps Bay, stop at Hout Bay and take a boat trip to the seal colony, drive further south to Simonstown and Boulders beach to visit the colony of African penguins and then a visit to Cape Point and its National Park and beaches. For spectacular scenery take an escorted tour of the Winelands visiting Paarl, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. Sample the delights of the many vineyards and take in a wine cellar tour. For families visit the Spier Vineyard and Cheetah Sanctuary.
