Over the past eleven years the seaport town of Fishguard has been host to one of the UK’s best small traditional music festivals. Last year it won the Radio Pembrokeshire Best Local Festival award. With concerts, dance displays, workshops, meet the artist events, busking, informal music and song sessions, the town will be filled with colourful displays of dancing, along with tunes, airs, jigs and reels. Also featured is the popular guided ‘Pirate and Smugglers’ walk. This small, friendly festival is mainly free, and embraces the talents of old and young alike and actively encourages visitors to join in the sessions with the ‘stars’ of the show, everyone is a part of the entertainment - not just a spectator. Once again the festival will feature local performers like Mike Chant, All Spice, and The Vagrants Crew as well as some of the best of the current crop of UK folk artists such as Belshazzar’s Feast
(a duo featuring Bellowhead member Paul Sartin), Loxley (who will be playing a live session on Radio Pembrokeshire on Sunday 29th), and Heretique who combine three desperately unfashionable instruments (Accordion, Bagpipes and Hurdy Gurdy) to create music that is deeply rooted in European folk dance traditions and simultaneously pushes the boundaries of contemporary composition. Above all, their infectious energy and rhythmic drive is guaranteed to get you on your feet. This is a wonderful weekend, not just for bearded, open toed sandal, pewter tankard wearing types. Cast aside your prejudices and have some fun. Sunshine is guaranteed, oh, and did I mention the real ale? Full programme details are available at www.pembrokeshire-folk-music.co.uk

Mosh Potato Promotions
Mosh Potato Promotions was formed in 2008 by local musicians Al Muir, These three wise men had been performing together in the Milford area David Critten, and Andrew Mccloud. Concrete Beach, One Room Down, and more recently, Trunkshot and Hate since the early ‘90s in bands such as with the lack of suitable venues for them to play their favourite types of Gauge and had become disillusioned music – rock, punk and metal.
So in classic punk style, they decided if someone else wasn’t going to do it, they’d do it themselves and began hosting monthly gigs at The Imperial in Milford (formerly the Masonic Hall). The gigs have become very successful, regularly selling out, with people travelling from all over Pembrok eshire to attend them. They try to bring headliners down from Cardif or Swansea but the mainstay of Mosh Potato ance of this glorious DIY, lets do the show right here now and to hell with shows is local bands. And in furtherthe rest ethos, some of the bands arrive without the requisite numbers of musicians, or instruments, or occasiona desert flowers, bloom with great beauty and then fade away as quickly lly even tunes, and additionally, like all, apart from this DIY ethic, is a great bulging passionate commitment as they arrived. But what unites them to performing the music they love with a delicious desire and abandon. The next show at The Imperial, on Saturday 28th May is entitled Metallicis act to those heroes of heavy, but a collection of various musicians from h – and, no it doesn’t feature a tribute the aforementioned bands coming together to play their favourite Metallica tunes. Pembs Art
By Lynne Crompton lynne-orielq@tiscali.co.uk
Figurative and expressionist art is featured in a number of galleries this month and I’m sure many people will be glad that they can more easily identify with this type of work and will enjoy the riches on offer. In Tenby Museum and Art Gallery, Cherry Pickles is showing a colourful selection of her vibrant oil colours. She delights in rich layers of colour and a lively loose style of painting featuring figures in situations and in the landscape often with a story to tell. Open until 22nd May.
Cherry Pickles
In Manorowen at Workshop Wales from the 8th to 21st of May, Tim Fudge is showing over 80 paintings mostly landscapes and seascapes. The rugged colourful scenery of Pembrokeshire inspires Tim to create these expressionistic colourful compositions that capture the mood and intensity of this special place. Meanwhile in the middle of the county at Oriel Q – Queens Hall Gallery, Narberth, opening on Saturday 14th May is an exhibition of new work by Beth Marsden. Mostly portraits of family and friends, Beth says of her work ‘I want the paintings to have a narrative and to say as much about the sitter, their life and achievements as is possible in one image. The aim is to deal with an individual’s identity relating to self and a broad-
er context.’ A very accomplished painter Beth injects humour and sympathy into these works. Also showing in Oriel Q is a small exhibition by Mark Kerr of photographs, mainly portraits and many taken at last year’s Narberth Food Festival, both on until June 11th Tim Fudge and open Wednesdays – Saturdays 10am to 5pm. On a more cerebral note and just outside Pembrokeshire, but worth a visit is a delightful show at St Dogmaels gallery by Diana Heeks. Work ranging across a spectrum of abstraction -from large, vertical colour-fields in wood, paper and linen to smaller work in oil or watercolour which express her love of the decorative arts and allusively point to figuration. On until June 4th As well as all the small galleries in and around Pembrokeshire, these selected few show a wealth of talent that prove you do not have to go to the big cities to enjoy contemporary stimulating art. Enjoy! Lynne

Health & Fitness Get Out And About! Where do you do it? I’m a big believer in keeping active to make you feel better and where you do it doesn’t really matter. To recap a little over the last few months we have talked of making a commitment to exercise more, setting your sights on a target and then training at the right intensity by making sure your heart rate hits a certain level. If you are unsure about what you should do then I would always advise you attend a good gym to let them guide you through the whole process but if the weather continues to be as good as April was then my advice is get out and about. Pembrokeshire is an amazing county with a fabulous coastline, a hidden gem of an estuary, lush green valleys and remote hills to lose yourself in. So my challenge is to get out and experience it while the weather lasts. I’m amazed to find that many local Pembrokeshire born people have no idea what’s on their doorstep, so the challenge is to complete my top ten outdoor adventures during the month of May. Anyone who completes eight of them with photographic evidence will deserve a six month free membership at my Health Club!

TAURUS April 21-May 21 Mercury and Venus put in an appearance on the 16th just before the full moon on the 17th. This is a very good time for having a heart to heart with loved ones as Mercury gives you the gift for communication! Restoring harmony in partnerships, particularly long standing ones seems possible. Self doubts fade concerning love as you shine brightly and show your true colours! Let any hardness of the heart melt away and enjoy.
C
GEMINI May 22-June 21 Time for fun this month gemini, long term plans and aspirations finally seem to be manifesting. The new moon on the 3rd inspires you to reach even further, try the stars! Nothing seems to get on top of you as summer approaches. Try not to appear insensitive though to those around you who may not be having as much fun. Your positive energy and outlook though will be uplifting and contagious to those closest to you.
d
CANCER June 22-July 23 You have been spending a lot of time on your own lately and now that spring is well and truly here, it is time for you to do more socialising. Pluto and Saturn are retrograde this month so look for messages in your dreams concerning spiritual matters. The full moon on the 17th will be a time of reflection and feeling more peaceful within. Try to spend time nature either in the garden or going for walks near water.
E F g
LEO July 24-August 23 You seem to be a little impatient with loved ones. Try not to snarl Leo as you have the ability to intimidate those around you. Summer won’t be long and you will soon be soaking up the rays. Travel will bring new, much needed adventure into your life. A friend needs some support but may be afraid to ask. Put your claws in and you will be more approachable!
34
VIRGO August 24-Sept 23 The moons energy on the 12th and the 13th see you making plans, but because of Saturn’s influence you may be better off putting them into action next month. Timing is important and you must give yourself plenty. Try not to be too pedantic though and allow things to unravel naturally. You may find your self reflecting on a recent life lesson that has helped you develop. LIBRA Sept-24-Oct 23 Saturn still in retrograde at the beginning of march. This means that you should use this time to get on top of any paper work or projects. It is a month to contemplate, and plan. Your sign is often seen as elegant, fair and balanced. You don’t like anything that threatens harmony in your life. Try though not to have your head in the clouds
and be prepared to work to keep that equilibrium, towards the end of the month.
h i j k
SCORPIO Oct 24-Nov 22 You are walking tall and holding your head up this month. You should feel proud as a lot of hard work and determination pays off. Don’t take any notice of any negative comments from friends as jealousy raises it’s ugly head again, you have great things coming your way and no one can stop you enjoying them. Have fun Scorpio!
l a
PISCES Feb 20-March 20 This is a great month for pisces as yiou are influenced by your ruling planet Neptune! A great month for social engagements and activity. As the weather heats up you will be drawn to water which you enjoy as a pisces. A struggle with a close friendship seems to untangle and becomes resolved. this leaves you feeling lighter and brighter to move forward in confidence!
SAGITTARIUS Nov 23-Dec 21 finding a new routine will expand your mind a little more this month. Remember the mind is like a parachute ands works best when it is open! You may find your self being over critical and punctilious much to the irritation of those closest to you. Try to relax and realise that a little less control over others is very liberating and more rewarding in the long run. CAPRICORN Dec 22-Jan 20 You have had a lot of upsets recently and have neglected your own spiritual well being. As a hard working, straight talking Capricorn you can over do things and only realise once exhaustion sets in. The full moon on the 17th could allow you a much needed emotional release. Pluto’s retrograde influences you all month so try to release and don’t struggle against the tide. AQUARIUS Jan 21-Feb 19 Last months travel and adventure have left you hungry for more. You crave new horizons and feel a little bored. Try to focus on and appreciate what you have closer to home. Don’t neglect caring for and nurturing loved ones including pets! Some times we have to make small sacrifices and when we do the rewards are tremendous. Walking in nature will help you feel grounded and more stable.
ARIES March 21-April 20 Throughout May you are blessed with Jupiter, Venus and Mars! This is an interesting and powerful combination of cosmic energy, a great month for passion, good fortune and love. You have great Aries focus and determination that seem to be generating a lot of abundance too. Keep focused and enjoy.
