Business Profile

The Welcome Traveller Inn, Tiers Cross The Welcome Traveller Inn, with 8 en suite bedrooms, restaurant & bar, can be found in the little village of Tiers Cross. Just 3 miles from the Haverfordwest town centre, only 5 minutes to the beach and sitting on the border of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. Parts of the inn date back to the late 1600s & it has always been known by the same name. Today the Welcome Traveller Inn is run by the Partridge Family, Geoff, Babs & Sarah. The family took on the bed and breakfast in 2003 and have slowly been refurbishing & growing the business. They offer an extensive range of bar & restaurant meals along with Sunday lunches in a warm friendly atmosphere where children are always welcome. All of the meals are home made using fresh local produce and the menus are full & interesting to suit all tastes, with a selection of children & vegetarian meals. Along with the restaurant their is also a popular bar full of character, having an open real fire for those cosy winter nights in & lots of Welsh rugby memorabilia, including cartoon portraits of some of the great personalities of the game. Having a restaurant & bar on site makes it an ideal pub accommodation in Haverfordwest & Milford Haven. The Welcome Traveller Inn was recently featured on Channel 5’s ‘The Hotel Inspector’, which with the help of the show’s Alex Polizzi, showed this family run business being totally transformed for the better and today the Inn is a thriving business and highly reccomended.

Pembs Music CD REVIEW

Lowri Evans ‘Dydd A Nos’ (Sain/Rasal) Newport based singer/songwriter Lowri Evans releases her latest CD ‘Dydd A Nos’ (Night and Day) on June 10th. This 10 track bi-lingual album, engineered and co-produced by Lowri’s long time musical collaborator Lee Mason, is undoubtedly her strongest release yet. Lowri is in marvellous voice, the songwriting is mature, and her experienced band deliver sensitive yet muscular support throughout. The opening track, ‘Dydd A Nos’, sets the tone for the whole album. It begins with a repetitive, insistent guitar riff that immediately draws you into the song and develops through several melodic twists with Lowri exploring the power of her voice, given added resonance by some exquisite harmonies. Lowri’s sister Mari provides some of the vocal support, as well as multi-instrumentalist Lee. Rarely does Lowri let him off the leash but the boy does good! Especially on the first English track, ‘Don’t Light A Fire’, when they get down to some call and response. There’s enough light and shade, intriguing dynamics, and exciting music on this semi-acoustic, folk tinged yet stylistically varied record to make you listen time and time again. A favourite of mine is the lilting ‘How Do You Do’ which features Lowri and Lee’s latest instrumental discovery – the ukelele – first given an airing live in session on my Radio Pembrokeshire show. The album also features ‘Pob Siawns’, Lowri’s entry for the 2010 Can I Gymru competition. Lowri and Lee have been playing together for several years and this work is definitely their finest flowering so far. Although Lee’s tasteful instrumental work should never be underestimated, it is Lowri’s passionate and imaginative vocalising that ultimately takes the biscuit and well and truly dunks it. You can hob nob with them at their Pembrokeshire album launch on Friday 24th June at Theatr Gwaun, Fishguard. Can’t wait? Then check out www.lowrievans.co.uk.

DVD REVIEW

‘Sometimes I Wonder’ by Kristian Westmacott Nine year old Kristian Westmacott is the son of Tenby musicians Richie and Arleen Westmacott, known county wide for their acoustic duo Ella Guru and good time rock band Elephant Gerald. Kristian is set to follow in his parent’s footsteps after his successs in the Tenby’s Got Talent 2010 competition. His prize was a session at Mynci Studios, in the Taf Valley, and he chose to record ‘Sometimes I Wonder’, a song he learnt to sing at Tenby Junior School. A DVD has been made of the song (by Sharron Harris of Curious Ostrich Productions, Pembroke) in which Kristian and Arleen play themselves and Tenby actor Gary Tapley plays Kristian’s dad – probably because Kristian’s real dad, Richie, wouldn’t take off that bandana he is always wearing! The song deals with a soldier’s return home so it is fitting that all proceeds go to the Help For Heroes campaign. The DVD, with a sleeve designed by talented Kristian, is available, priced at £3.99, from Tenby Junior School, Dales Music (Tenby), and Robinson’s Newsagents (Pembroke and Pembroke Dock).

PREVIEW

Transglobal Underground, The Queens Hall, Narberth – Saturday 4th June FOCUS ON

Al Davey Jnr

Tenby troubadour Al Davey Jnr has been a favourite on the Pembrokeshire music scene for many years performing, either solo or with his band, a country inflected show that nods appreciatively in the direction of the likes of Bob Dylan and Neil Young. His album, Thanks Hank, an affectionate tribute to Hank Williams, remains one of the best albums ever produced in Pembrokeshire. But Al is more than a cover artist, he is an accomplished songwriter too. A few years ago he composed and recorded the theme tune for the Tenby Blues Festival. And now he’s at it again. Originally from Swansea, it is fitting that Al has written a tune, ‘Jack Army’, which has become the official fan’s anthem in support of Swansea City FC’s Championship play-off challenge. At the time of going to press we don’t know if Swansea have been successful in reaching the Premiership but one thing’s for certain, Al has created one of the best songs about football I’ve ever heard. Now you might think that’s not saying much, especially if you are old enough to remember Hoddle, Waddle and their mullets on Top of the Pops, but then again who could ever forget Halfman Halfbiscuit’s glorious ‘All I Want For Christmas Is A Dukla Prague Away Kit’? It is indeed, a game of two halves.

The Queens Hall, Narberth has offered up innumerable evenings of serious dancing in its illustrious 50 year history, occasions when there was rarely a dry sock in the house at the end of the night. But the visit of the renowned Transglobal Underground on Saturday 4th June, on a UK tour to promote their new album The Stone Turntable, promises to top the lot. Combining the finest elements of dance music with those of the world music scene, their blend of beats, post-punk attitude, and influences from Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, creates a fulsome, funky, fusion that forcible reminds one that there’s only one F in fun! Regarded as one of the best live acts currently performing on the UK scene, and I can vouch for that after witnessing a monumental gig by them at the Pontardawe Festival a couple of years ago, Transglobal Underground’s Pembrokeshire show should be a might to remember. Tickets are available from The Queens Hall A SPECIALIST Box Office SELECTION OF or SPAN Arts JAZZ, BLUES AND (the event WORLD promoters). Pembs Art

By Lynne Crompton lynne-orielq@tiscali.co.uk

A fabulous exhibition of paintings by Beth Marsden continues until June 11th at Oriel Q –

Queens Hall Gallery Narberth. She has produced 19 new paintings, from small intimate portrait studies to large colourful fairground scenes. She paints portraits and people in character , and captures their identity and personalities in a vibrant style with candor and humour. What a pleasure to see an artist who has such control over the medium of paint and who uses colour superbly, creating such exciting compositions. As a mother of two young children she has captured glimpses of domestic life with tenderness and wit, but she has also created stunning large compositions that show off her immense talent. (see attached pics)Beth taught at West Wales School of Art in Carmarthen and quite a few of her ex pupils came to the opening of the show. It’s good for students to see what their tutors are doing, and this month there’s ample opportunity to see what students are doing, with various end of term exhibitions .There is a degree showcase in Pembrokeshire College in the Atrium with Further Education students showing their work from 23rd May to 3rd June. Carmarthen Art College opens its doors from 27th May, and you may spot the talented artists who will be showing in our galleries in the future. Another artist who lectured at Carmarthen and is now head of Fine Art in Swansea is Tim Davies who is from Pembrokeshire and attended Haverfordwest Grammar School, and is this year representing Wales in the Venice Biennale which opens in the first week of June. If you go to the Arts Council of Wales website you can learn more about Tim and his work, and also meet him in Oriel Q when he will be touring Wales and talking about his work.

14

The Summer sees more studios opening to the public and more ‘open exhibitions’ where all level of artists show their work. It’s a chance to buy reasonably priced work and to appreciate the many styles and approaches to art. You may even want to contribute some of your own work into a show. The annual ‘Summer Open’ that ends in an auction at Oriel Q – Queens Hall Narberth is one that you may want to enter. See the website for details or get a form from the gallery. You may end up hanging next to some prestigious artists, and it could even help your career take off! Good luck. Lynne Crompton

Film Reviews

By Stefan Mohamed & Biscuit Crumpetpants

THOR (12A)

Thor. Hot-tempered Thor, of the shiny blonde locks, silly helmet and long red cape. Thor of the ludicrous cod-Shakespearean dialogue and enormous cosmic plots transplanting Norse mythology to grandiose science fiction action adventures. The most potentially ridiculous of Marvel’s heroes, which is saying something. And now he’s got his own blockbuster. Surely it was always destined to be rubbish? Surely you’re going to spend the whole thing snorting into your popcorn? Surely it couldn’t be anything more than a big fat failure? Well, no actually. It’s really good. Stick that in your giant lightningsummoning hammer and shmoke it. Kenneth Branagh has pulled off something pretty impressive here. He’s managed to make Thor not only vaguely plausible, but hugely enjoyable as well. He takes the concept just seriously enough for the audience to suspend our disbelief, but not so seriously that the whole thing becomes po-faced and melodramatic. This lightness of touch makes Thor one of the most charming, straightforwardly fun films to come out of the Hollywood machine for a good long while. Chris Hemsworth, in his first big role, has just the right balance of majesty, vanity, fury and humility to make Thor rounded and likable, when he could have been an unpleasant buffoon. Tom Hiddleston, as his duplicitous brother Loki, gives us a layered, tragic villain where we could have had a pantomime fool. Natalie Portman doesn’t really convince as a genius physicist, but she brings charm and heart to her role, and makes the relationship between herself and the six-foot thunder god sweet and believable. The special effects are excellent, from the gorgeously over-the-top CGI vistas of Asgard to the crunchy battle scenes, and the script is enjoyably witty and satisfyingly epic. It’s just huge amounts of fun. And that’s enough. Don’t bother with the 3D though.

HANNA (12A) Hanna is hypnotic. Brought up to be an assassin, she is a teenager going out into the real world where her father has unfinished business. Unlike most films featuring a teenage girl as the central character, Hanna is a mysterious and intricate piece of art. The girl is a brutal killer and the intense action scenes are unforgiving and awesome. She lives by her father’s teachings, she must ‘adapt or die’, and begins to realise that her enemies may not be who she thinks they are. Saoirse Ronan gives a beautiful performance as Hanna and outshines her older co-stars, Eric Bana and Cate Blanchett. The plot begins strongly, filled with mystery as Hanna prepares to go out and fight her father’s demons, but the plot fails to explain itself as well as it should. I was never sure who to dislike or who the enemy was. The story is, at its core, one of coming of age. The scenes in which Hanna discovers music and electricity are poignant and bewitching – much as a result of Ronan’s fantastic acting. She meets an English family and her first conversations with them are jarring and awkward which drags the story into a real setting, where it is less fairytale and more horror story. Director Joe Wright, weaves the art-house camerawork and peculiar characters together to form a dark and entrancing picture to get lost in. The lucid, eerie shots fall deeply on the tinkling, shadowy soundtrack by The Chemical Brothers. Though the plot wears thin at times, you won’t be able to take your eyes off Hanna. GEMINI May 22-June 21 The full moon on the 16th is a great time to celebrate and have fun under the stars! Venus brings romanic possibilities from the 10th until the end of the month, so shine brightly and let others see how you sparkle! Mercury’s influence brings easy communication from the 3rd to the 16th so use this to your advantage, especially concerning affairs of the heart. Holiday plans have you feeling excited and heady as you dream of magical destinations both near and far!

d

CANCER June 22-July 23 Mercury on the 17th, just after the full moon, is bringing the need for you to soul search, and offers you the chance to amend a break down of communication. You may have been barking up the wrong tree as regards to who your friends really are, try not to cut yourself off from the people that really do care about you. The new moon on the 1st brings a fresh, creative energy. A great time for artistic and creative pursuits.

E F g h

LEO July 24-August 23 The moon in Leo on the 6th and Saturn’s influence see you in a reflective and more analytical frame of mind. Add to this Neptune and Pluto’s retrograde position throughout June you will be more in touch with your spiritual side. Take note of any messages that may appear in your dreams. Take the time to enjoy peaceful walks in nature and try to nurture yourself, emotionally as well as physically.

30

VIRGO August 24-Sept 23 The beginning of June allows you to communicate with confidence. This is a good time for you to make plans with family and friends to have fun. The moon’s influence on the 8th and 9th make this an excellent time for gaiety and celebrations! June is a good for month for changes so be prepared for much needed adjustments this includes clearing out the clutter! LIBRA Sept-24-Oct 23 Saturn continues to bring it’s retrograde influence until the 12th, use this time to make plans and put them into action after this date. From then on it is a good time for you to rid your life of aspects that are not useful, constructive or productive. A shopping trip leaves you feeling exhilarated, be careful not to be too dazzled though, all that sparkle could make you over spend! SCORPIO Oct 24-Nov 22 After last months jubilant success and celebrations, you are feeling more confident and still have a spring in your step. Those around you are enjoying your sense of humour and fun, and want to spend more time in your company as your popularity grows. Try to share yourself out evenly and not leave your older and quieter friends out. Holiday plans have you in a whirl of excitement, it may be time to start looking for items you need to take with you!

i

SAGITTARIUS Nov 23-Dec 21 Well done Sagittarius, you have seen the light! Wisdom and insight seem to have finally brought down some steely barriers. You are feeling less threatened by what others think about you and feel more peaceful within yourself. Try to keep thoughts positive and you will see some remarkable changes coming into your life, where they are needed most. The moon’s influence on 14th and 15th allows you an emotional release.

j

CAPRICORN Dec 22-Jan 20 Pluto is retrograde for the entire month and this means you will be feeling reflective and deeply thoughtful. You have been going through some dramatic changes and this has left you with a deep understanding of your own tender feelings. You may feel a little vulnerable emotionally, but your inner strength is vast and soon you will charging forward in typical Capricorn fashion. Enjoy this time to nurture and pamper yourself!

k l a b

AQUARIUS Jan 21-Feb 19 Your confidence has taken a slight knock and you may be feeling a little more subdued than normal. Applying yourself to a creative out let will help you feel more grounded and help you externalise how you are feeling. Wearing turquoise could help you communicate and will be a healing colour for you this month. Spend time walking in nature when you can. PISCES Feb 20-March 20 You may be feeling sensitive as Neptune’s retrograde energy stays for the entire month. It is however still a good time for you to plan and work on projects and dreams. Affairs of the heart take on a more dreamy, surreal aspect but try to be fluid and flexible by going with the flow. Make sure you get enough sleep and treat yourself to some holistic pampering. ARIES March 21-April 20 Try not to appear to be too controlling, especially concerning joint finances. All will be fine and worrying unnecessarily will not achieve anything and may just fuel resentment. Uranus and Jupiter bring good luck and positive change, especially from the 1st to the 4th. Loved ones are feeling proud of all your recent achievements and respect all you do for them. A romantic gesture is greatly appreciated! TAURUS April 21-May 21 You seem to be cutting a lonely figure at the moment. Try not to let your pride isolate you, by giving you a false and inflated sense of self. Those around you may be seeing the true you more than you realise and what they see is a lot of barriers and insecurities. Try to just let the real you shine through and you will be appreciated and loved as you so deserve. Jupiter and Venus help make this possible!
