2017-18 TEMPORARY EXHIBITS In the Shadows: Photography Exhibit by On June 3, 2016, the world lost a beloved global icon: Muhammad Ali. During the week following his death, the City of Louisville, Kentucky, USA, was the “epicenter of the world,” as media descended upon and visitors flocked into the city from far and wide to pay their respects and to say a personal good-bye to “The Greatest of All Time.” The Muhammad Ali Center was at center stage, as well, for this 100,000 square foot facility located on Museum Row in the heart of the city’s downtown, and it remains the only place in the world dedicated to preserving and promoting Muhammad Ali’s legacy for years to come. A multicultural center with an award-winning museum, the Ali Center captures the inspiration derived from the story of Muhammad Ali’s incredible life. A visit to the Center is not just an experience, but a journey into the heart of a champion. The Ali Center’s two-and-a-half levels of award-winning exhibits and galleries invite visitors to explore Muhammad Ali’s legendary life, as well as to reflect upon one’s own individual values, inner strength, character, and what makes you the greatest person you can be. A journey through the Center’s interactive and multimedia exhibits invites visitors to discover the six core principles that Muhammad Ali embraced throughout his life: Confidence, Conviction, Dedication, Giving, Respect, and Spirituality. Media and interactive experiences will learn how these ideals gave him the wherewithal to be the best athlete he could be, the strength and courage to stand up for what he believed, and the inspiration to reach people around the world and dedicate himself to helping others. In 2016, the Ali Center opened 1,640 sq. feet of new permanent exhibit space, as well an additional 2,500 sq. feet of temporar y exhibit space. 6 | www.wheretogokentucky.com

Fall

WEST REGION

Fishing, golf, camping and plenty of other outdoor recreational activities are available for guests at Kentucky State Parks in the western part of the state during the fall. Some of Kentucky’s best fishing is at Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake, where there are three resort parks: Kentucky Dam Village, Lake Barkley and Kenlake. All three have marinas and boat rentals available. The Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area provides even more recreation for guests. If golf is your game, check out Mineral Mounds State Park at Eddyville, along the shores of Lake Barkley. There are also excellent courses at Pennyrile Forest, Lake Barkley and Kentucky Dam Village state resort parks. These three parks also have lodges, cottages and campgrounds. One of the more unique camping opportunities in the west is at Columbus-Belmont State Park along the banks of the Mississippi River. The campground is on a bluff, providing excellent views of the river. Columbus-Belmont hosts its Civil War Days Oct. 13-15 that features reenactments, history, and entertainment. Lake Malone State Park at Dunmor also offers excellent camping along a 780-acre lake that includes a new dock. History buffs may also be interested in Wickliffe Mounds State Historic Site in Wickliffe. The park is holding history hikes every Saturday during October that are included with regular admission. They start at 10 a.m. Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park at Dawson Springs is hosting a fall Photography Weekend Oct. 20-22 that includes photo instruction and a competition among participants. Pennyrile Forest will have its Spooky Extravaganza weekend Oct. 27-29 for Halloween and a Santa visit and gift shop open house on Dec. 2.

Another popular park for wildlife lovers is John James Audubon State Park in Henderson, the home of an art museum that honors the wildlife artist, along with regular art programs, nature activities and other events. The park recently added a 650-acre tract of wetlands that include trails and wildlife viewing areas. The park also has other hiking trails, a lake, a campground, cottages and 9-hole golf course. The fall is also a good time for good food at Kentucky State Parks. All resort parks will offer the annual Thanksgiving Day buffet on Nov. 23. During the Christmas holidays, most resort parks will offer special seasonal events as well as New Year’s Eve parties. The resort parks at Kentucky State Parks have lodges, cottages, restaurants and yearround recreational activities. The park system also has recreational parks and historic sites throughout the state. There are 30 Kentucky State Park campgrounds open from the spring through late fall.

PLACES TO GO CADIZ

| If you took a step back in time and walked downtown Main Street before the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, you would find the same buildings dominating the city. After all these years the important elements of the city and county landscape still remain. The present day courthouse, completed in 1922 stands today, both serving as a center of county government and a witness to times past. Buildings built before we were born are reminiscent of days gone by, and yet they remain the basic building blocks of the city and its landscape.

FALL! FUN FACTS Why Do Leaves Fall Off?

Leaves are the energy generators for plants. By using sunlight, water and carbon dioxide and chlorophyll they create food for the tree. The trees then pass oxygen into the air. The reason that the leaves change color is due to the shortening of the days. As this occurs the leaves begin to produce less chlorophyl and change color. Many people think that the leaves turn color but this is not true. The leaves are actually the colors we see in the fall. The reason that the leaves are green is because they are full of chlorophyll. 40 |

Fall

EASTERN REGION

The fall season in Eastern Kentucky is one of the most popular thanks to Mother Nature’s annual array of colors. Kentucky State Parks in the region are perfect places to enjoy the leaves as well as other outdoor recreation as temperatures cool off. Elk viewing tours at Jenny Wiley State Resort Park have become popular for weekend getaways. Visitors can take a guided van tour to see wild elk in their mountain habitat and enjoy a few days at this popular park in Prestonsburg. Cumberland Falls State Resort Park near Corbin will host its Outdoor Family Adventure weekends Oct. 6-7 and Nov. 24-25. The weekends feature astronomy, archery, hiking and more outdoor adventure for the entire family. The month of October is popular for Halloween events at many state parks. Carter Caves State Resort Park near Olive Hill sponsors a Haunted Trail on three October weekends. This event is not for the faint of heart! Kentucky State Park campgrounds are busy this time of year and the parks plan to keep campgrounds open through mid-November. Grayson Lake State Park, Yatesville Lake State Park, Levi Jackson State Park and Paintsville Lake State Park offer excellent camping opportunities in the region. Levi Jackson State Park in London is also the home of Treetop Adventure – a challenge course with bridges that connect trees and platforms. It’s open through mid-November, depending upon weather conditions. Hiking is another fall activity at many Kentucky State Parks. Natural Bridge State Resort Park at Slade, Kingdom Come State Park at Cumberland and the Dawkins Line Rail Trail provide hikers with some excellent views of the region’s natural beauty. The Dawkins Line is also open to horseback riders and cyclists.

Natural Bridge also hosts the last three Saturday hoedowns of the season Oct. 7, 14 and 21 at Hoedown Island. The dances have been held there for more than 45 years. The fall is also a good time for good food at Kentucky State Parks. All resort parks in the region – Greenbo Lake, Carter Caves, Pine Mountain, Jenny Wiley, Buckhorn Lake, Natural Bridge and Cumberland Falls – will offer the annual Thanksgiving Day buffet on Nov. 23. Golf courses at Grayson Lake, Yatesville Lake, and Pine Mountain all remain open and offer excellent play through the fall.

FALL! FUN FACTS Animals Hibernate

Toward the end of the season, depending on where you live, mammals and reptiles will begin to prepare for the winter. Animals such as bears, groundhogs and other small mammals will fatten up for the long winter months. They will select a secluded place where they will be able to stay warm and dry and then sleep through cold months when food is scarce. Frogs and snakse will find a warm comfortable spot and sleep until the spring thaw. Certain birds are also migratory and will begin to move south as the weather cools the water and causes plants that they use as food to die off.

As the lakes in the north freeze Canadian Geese will leave their summer homes in Canada and use one of the many flight ways in the United States to reach warmer climates. 50 |

PLACES TO GO BOWLING GREEN

| During the Civil War, Bowling Green was the Confederate Capital of Kentucky and now is known as the Corvette Capital of the world. Its historic downtown dates back to 1798. Some points of interest are The Corvette Museum and Kentucky Museum which showcases much of Kentucky’s history through photographs, manuscripts, and artifacts; as well as, an original log home decorated with authentic 1830’s furnishings.

BURNSIDE

of Boy Scouts of America”, and an official state historical society marker commemorates the troop. In 2005, Burnside became the only town in Pulaski County to allow the sale of alcoholic beverages by the drink in qualified establishments. Since then, Burnside annexed several miles of shoreline along Lake Cumberland in order to include Lee’s Ford Marina, allowing it to sell alcohol.

FALL! FUN FACTS The Dates Of Autumn

There is no fixed time period for the season of Autumn. It can shift from year to year. This is because the earth’s orbit is not perfect. Although most people are not aware of it, the first day and last day of autumn generally shift about 24 hours every year. The beginning of Fall generally falls between September 21 and September 23 depending on the year. This day is known as the fall equinox. On this day the amount of sun and the amount of night are equal, which is the same as the Spring equinox. The last day of Autumn falls on December 21 to December 23. FALL 2017

FALL! FUN FACTS It Is Not Fall All Over the World!

The earth is tilted on its axis and that is what gives us our traditional four seasons. It is because of this tilt that not all area’s of the earth experience autumn in the same months. In Australia, New Zealand and South Africa The months of September, October and November are actually spring. This is because the tilt of the earth causes these regions to actually be closer to the sun. In the Northern Hemisphere the sun’s rays are not hitting the planet as direct as they do in the south. 62 |
