Spring
WEST REGION
Western Kentucky is filled with great outdoor springtime opportunities, especially at Kentucky State Parks. Fishing, golf, camping and plenty of other outdoor recreational activities are available for visitors in the western part of the state. If you’re interested in wildlife, Kenlake State Resort Park in Aurora will be offering eagle viewing trips in early February. Tours are offered on the CQ Princess, a yacht with a heated cabin that’s great for watching eagles and other wildlife. Many state parks hold spring clean up days in the spring to prepare trails and pick up litter. Kentucky Dam Village State Resort Park in Calvert City will hold its cleanup day on March 17. Volunteers will be rewarded with a chili lunch. Campgrounds at all parks will open in March. Columbus-Belmont State Park along the Mississippi River in Columbus and other park campgrounds will par ticipate in Camper Appreciation Weekend, when guests can get two nights for the price of one, is April 27-29. State park campgrounds have water and electricity as well as bathhouses and camp stores. Lake Malone State Park at Dunmor also offers excellent camping along a 780-acre lake that 6 |

includes a new dock. Another popular park for wildlife lovers is John James Audubon State Park in Henderson, the home of an art museum that honors the wildlife artist, along with regular art programs, nature activities and other events. The park recently added a 650-acre tract of wetlands that include trails and wildlife viewing areas. The park also has other hiking trails, a lake, a campground, cottages and 9-hole golf course. Wickliffe Mounds State Historic Site is a native American site along the Mississippi River in Wickliffe. It offers tours and tells about the history of people who lived in the area and built mounds around 1100 A.D. Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park in Dawson Springs will host its Spring Photography Weekend April 13-15. Professionals offer tips and there’s a photo competition for the par ticipants. A lodging discount is also available. If golf is your game, check out Mineral Mounds State Park at Eddyville, along the shores of Lake Barkley. There are also excellent courses at Pennyrile Forest, Lake Barkley and Kentucky Dam Village state resort parks. Resort parks will celebrate Valentine’s Day with weekend packages in February and park restaurants will offer the annual Easter
Sunday buffet on April 1. Many parks also host egg hunts and other events for children. All resort park restaurants will be hosting the annual Mother’s Day buffet on May 13, 2018. Kentucky State Park resorts have lodges, cottages, restaurants and year-round recreational activities. The park system also has recreational parks and historic sites throughout the state. There are 30 Kentucky State Park campgrounds open from the spring through late fall.

PLACES TO GO CADIZ
| If you took a step back in time and walked downtown Main Street before the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, you would find the same buildings dominating the city. After all these years the important elements of the city and county landscape still remain. The present day courthouse, completed in 1922 stands today, both serving as a center of county government and a witness to times past. Buildings built before we were born are reminiscent of days gone by, and yet they remain the basic building blocks of the city and its landscape.

Each of these guided hikes starts at the park lodge and treks through a different part of the park, ranging from 4 to 8 miles. The cost of $8 per person per hike. After your hike, enjoy a beverage in the park’s new Trails End Tavern. Cumberland Falls State Resort Park near Corbin will be hosting the first of four “Campout at the Fire Tower” events March 10-11.
