THINGS TO DO WESTERN REGION
Home of Bluegrass and More Ohio County, KY
n western Kentucky, lies Ohio County, geographically the fifth largest county in Kentucky. Inside the county lines, just off the Blue Moon of Kentucky Highway, one can walk the hills of Jerusalem Ridge at the Homeplace of the “Father of Bluegrass”, Bill Monroe, and take a guided tour through his boyhood home. Next, venture down the highway to Rosine, Kentucky to visit Uncle Pen’s Cabin and the gravesites of Bill, Pen and Monroe family members at the Rosine Cemetery. If it’s a Friday night, Rosine is filled with the pickin’ and playin’ of Bluegrass Music at the Historical Rosine Barn Jamboree. Local musicians and bands from all around come to play on stage at The Barn. You can stand on a star which marks the spot Bill Monroe stood during one of his performances at the barn.
There is more to Ohio County than bluegrass and its history. North, on Highway 69, is Fordsville where you’ll find the Fordsville L & N Depot Museum rich in railroad history depicting the earliest of transportation and the economic boom it gave this small town. Just picture the rural lifestyle of the 1900’s through the distinctive collectibles and memorabilia within the museum. In Hartford, The Ohio County Park & Campground boasts the rustic replica of the early setters’ sanctuary, Old Fort Hartford, a great place for kids and photo opportunities. Twice a month, guys and gals test their skills at “Cowboy Fast Draw” competitions. The Kentucky State Championship Shoot, held in September, is a unique, ol’ time spectator sport. Other amenities of the park include a 3.1 mile bike/walking trail, 1 mile nature trail, tennis court, basketballs courts, baseball field, volleyball courts, archery range, horse arena, picnic and playground areas with shelters. The Beaver Dam Park features a new state-of-the art amphitheater. Concerts and events like Merle Haggard, Jason Crabb, 38 Special, Hot Air Balloon Rides and 4th of July Fireworks fill the spring through fall calendar. Enjoy antique shopping and home cooking while visiting Beaver Dam. Tri-City Drive-In Theatre, one of very few still operating across the nation, invites you to the latest movie releases viewed from your vehicle. When it’s time to leave our fine county, take a drive down Highway 369 to the Rochester Ferry. This 100 year old River Ferry will portage you and your car, free of charge, across the Green River into Butler County as we bid you adieu and invite you back again. visitohiocountyky.com.

places to go Cadiz If you took a step back in time and walked downtown Main Street before the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, you would find the same buildings dominating the city. After all these years the important elements of the city and county landscape still remain. The present day courthouse, completed in 1922 stands today, both serving as a center of county government and a witness to times past. Buildings built before we were born are reminiscent of days gone by, and yet they remain the basic building blocks of the city and its landscape.

Protect
your online identity with these cyber-tiPs
Smartphones & mobile devices • Know your Apps. When signing up with an app store or downloading individual apps, you may be asked for permission to let them access information on your device. Some apps may be able to access your phone and email contacts, call logs, Internet data, calendar data, device location, the device’s unique ID, and information about how you use the app itself. • Passwords protect all devices. Ensure all portable electronic devices are properly password protected, especially any device with personal communications account information. • “Brick” a stolen device. In recent years, roughly 40 percent of all robberies now involve smart phones and/ or tablet computers endangering the security of the personal information on the stolen devices. If a person’s smart phone is lost or stolen, they may now contact the carrier and ask to have that device remotely disabled. These “Bricked” phones are of no use to thieves because they can’t be reactivated after being sold on the black market. Online protection • Know the terms on social networking websites. Social networking sites’ privacy settings default to everyone. This means anyone can view your profile, not just people you know. Users should change this by accessing the Privacy Settings/Profile Information usually found under the respective Account tab. • Sample social networking safely. Never disclose private information when using social networking websites. Be very selective about who you invite or accept invitations from as cyber criminals use false profiles to gain access to personal and private information, such as birthdates, marital status, and personal photographs. Posts containing personal identifying information (PII), including pictures containing metadata can be used against you and your family. • Click with caution. Always use caution when clicking on links in an email or a social networking post, even from someone you know. Reports of personal social networking accounts being hacked and taken over by criminals have increased in recent years. Clicking on a link that appears to be benign in nature may in fact contain embedded malware that can compromise your computer and identity. • Hide your profile from search engines. This can be accomplished by going to the Account/Privacy Settings/ Search and unchecking the “Public Search Results” box. This will remove your public preview from Google, Bing, and Yahoo search returns. • Prevent people from “tagging” you in photos and videos. To do this, go to the Account/Privacy Settings/ Profile Information/Photos and Videos of Me and deselect the everyone default. • Keep your personal information safe. Don’t provide personal or financial information, user names, or passwords in response to an email, because legitimate companies generally don’t seek such information in this manner. • Install/update your anti-virus/firewall software. Antivirus and firewall software is a must for anyone to safely navigate online. Ensure your antivirus software program updates automatically and scans your computer on a recurring schedule. Report the theft to the Internet Crime Complaint Center which is an FBI-NW3C Partnership. They are available online at http://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx. If you suspect you are a victim of identity theft, you should report the crime to the FBI IC3 and to the Federal Trade Commission. They are available online at http://www.ftc.gov/idtheft. You can also call them at 1-877-ID-THEFT (438-4338) or TTY, 1-866-653-4261 You can mail in a complaint to: Identity Theft Clearinghouse, Federal Trade Commission, Washington, DC 20580 Source: By the U.S. Army Criminal Investigative Command, http://www.nationalguard.mil/newarchives/2013/09/091913-Protect.aspx

This affords locals and visitors a unique opportunity to experience, explore and enjoy nature first hand! McCreary County shares Cumberland Falls, the “Niagara of the South”, with neighboring Whitley County. The Falls is the largest south of Niagara Falls and east of the Mississippi and features the only active moonbow in the western hemisphere. We also boast a scenic railway to take you deep into the heart of what once was coal country, two restored coal camps providing tours and cultural and historical programs, and vast offerings in outdoor recreation.

It is not over till the fat lady sings. Better late than never. Faint heart never won fair lady. A stitch in time saves nine. Don’t judge a book by its cover. Half a loaf is better than no bread. Don’t put off till tomorrow what you can do today. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Do as I say, not as I do. Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. To each his own. Early to bed, early to rise. A fool and his money are soon parted. To thine own heart be true.
