Spring
KENTUCKY STATE PARKS
Spring is the prime time to get outside in Kentucky, and Kentucky State Parks offer guests numerous opportunities to take hikes, camp, see nature and get in the water for swimming and boating. Besides the outdoor fun, all state park historic sites are open and that means learning about Native Americans, pioneers, Civil War battles and other significant events in the history of Kentucky. Here are a few Kentucky State Park events for the spring. To learn more, or to make lodging or camping reservations, visit www.parks.ky.gov 6 |
www.wheretogokentucky.com
Make plans to visit a Kentucky State Park this year. They offer lodging, camping, restaurants, outdoor recreational activities, golf and history. For details, visit
www.parks.ky.gov
April Kickoff April with a camping trip! All 30 state park campgrounds are open this month. You can bring your RV, pop up camper or a tent – we like them all. The weekend of April 28-30 is designated as “Camper Appreciation Weekend” where campers get two nights for the price of one. Many parks hold special events at campgrounds to celebrate the return of camping. April is also the month for wildflowers. Special events and hikes are planned at these state parks: John James Audubon, Barren River, Lake Barkley and Carter Caves. Easter egg hunts for the kids are popular at many state parks, along with the annual Easter Buffet dinner served at all resort parks on April 16.
May
The weather is great for a game of golf in May and Kentucky State Parks offers play across the state. The parks have 18hole courses at 12 parks. New packages that include golf and overnight stays are also available. Make plans to get mom out to a state park for Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 14. The resort parks will cook and clean while mom and the family enjoys a great meal and the beauty of a state park. Memorial Day Weekend May 27-29 is the start of swimming season at all state parks. The pools will be open at the lodges and other parks with community pools that charge fees. A few parks have beaches and Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park will open with a beach party on the holiday weekend.
June
School is out and summer vacations start in June. Rent a lodge room, cottage or campsite for a family vacation at a Kentucky State Park! Many parks offer free and fee-based recreation and interpretive programs for guests such as arts and crafts, archery and nature hikes. Free fishing weekend is the first weekend in June and many state parks have lakes or rivers and a few even offer free fishing gear. At all other times, anyone 16 or older must have a fishing license. Historic sites are also holding special events during June, including Flintknapping and Primitive Technology at Wickliffe Mounds June 10, a Gathering of Descendants at Fort Boonesborough June 17 and the Settlement and Raid Weekend at Old Fort Harrod June 17-18. PLACES TO GO CADIZ
| If you took a step back in time and walked downtown Main Street before the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, you would find the same buildings dominating the city. After all these years the important elements of the city and county landscape still remain. The present day courthouse, completed in 1922 stands today, both serving as a center of county government and a witness to times past. Buildings built before we were born are reminiscent of days gone by, and yet they remain the basic building blocks of the city and its landscape.

PROTECT YOUR ONLINE IDENTITY WITH THESE CYBER-TIPS SMARTPHONES & MOBILE DEVICES - Know your Apps. When signing up with an app store or downloading individual apps, you may be asked for permission to let them access information on your device. Some apps may be able to access your phone and email contacts, call logs, Internet data, calendar data, device location, the device’s unique ID, and information about how you use the app itself. - Passwords protect all devices. Ensure all portable electronic devices are properly password protected, especially any device with personal communications account information. - “Brick” a stolen device. In recent years, roughly 40 percent of all robberies now involve smart phones and/or tablet computers endangering the security of the personal information on the stolen devices. If a person’s smart phone is lost or stolen, they may now contact the carrier and ask to have that device remotely disabled. These “Bricked” phones are of no use to thieves because they can’t be reactivated after being sold on the black market.
ONLINE PROTECTION - Know the terms on social networking websites. Social networking sites’ privacy settings default to everyone. This means anyone can view your profile, not just people you know. Users should change this by accessing the Privacy Settings/ Profile Information usually found under the respective Account tab. - Sample social networking safely. Never disclose private information when using social networking websites. Be very selective about who you invite or accept invitations from as cyber criminals use false profiles to gain access to personal and private information, such as birthdates, marital status, and personal
photographs. Posts containing personal identifying information (PII), including pictures containing metadata can be used against you and your family. - Click with caution. Always use caution when clicking on links in an email or a social networking post, even from someone you know. Reports of personal social networking accounts being hacked and taken over by criminals have increased in recent years. Clicking on a link that appears to be benign in nature may in fact contain embedded malware that can compromise your computer and identity. - Hide your profile from search engines. This can be accomplished by going to the Account/Privacy Settings/ Search and unchecking the “Public Search Results” box. This will remove your public preview from Google, Bing, and Yahoo search returns. - Prevent people from “tagging” you in photos and videos. To do this, go to the Account/Privacy Settings/Profile Information/Photos and Videos of Me and deselect the everyone default. - Keep your personal information safe. Don’t provide personal or financial information, user names, or passwords in response to an email, because legitimate companies generally don’t seek such information in this manner. Install/update your anti-virus/firewall software. Antivirus and firewall software is a must for anyone to safely navigate online. Ensure your antivirus software program updates automatically and scans your computer on a recurring schedule.
