PLACES TO GO CADIZ
| If you took a step back in time and walked downtown Main Street before the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, you would find the same buildings dominating the city. After all these years the important elements of the city and county landscape still remain. The present day courthouse, completed in 1922 stands today, both serving as a center of county government and a witness to times past. Buildings built before we were born are reminiscent of days gone by, and yet they remain the basic building blocks of the city and its landscape.

SUMMER 2018

Warm weather has finally arrived at the Louisville Zoo and so have over 700,000 LEGO® pieces in the form of larger-than-life sculptures of wildlife. Designed by Artist Sean Kenney, Nature Connects® Art with LEGO® bricks exhibit is now open. Thirteen exquisite sculptures are spread throughout the Zoo, set within natural scenery. Stand in awe next to the coral reef, marvel at a gigantic rainbow-colored chameleon, come nose-to-nose with a crouching snow leopard and more. Like most works of art, these sculptures took hours and hours for Kenney and his builder team to create. The group spent over 6,500 hours and used over 770,000 LEGO® bricks for the exhibit. The goal is to inspire guests to learn more about endangered wildlife and to join us as we strive to build a better future for wildlife, brick-by-brick. Kenney is a renowned, award-winning artist and has created sculptures for over 10 years. Before working with LEGO bricks, he was a cartoonist, graphic artist and an interactive designer. Most of his projects start out as pencil sketches and many have serious engineering inside, but in between Kenney loves to sit down with a big pile of LEGO pieces and “just figure it all out.” Just as LEGO bricks interconnect, everything in nature is interconnected in a delicate balance. 36 | www.wheretogokentucky.com
Each sculpture in Nature Connects® depicts a different vulnerable species (with one already extinct): animals that could use our help. The collection comes together to help visitors understand the connection between animal conservation and our world. This new exhibit brings these engaging animal sculptures together with information about the conservationists who protect the real animals — from conservation heroes like Snow Leopard Trust to the Louisville Zoo staff working hard to build a better future for wildlife. Nature Connects® runs through September 3 and is free with Zoo admission or membership. The exhibit is presented by Ford Motor Company. You can learn more about these amazing works of art, the real animals they depict and our conservation heroes at LouisvilleZoo.org/bricks. Also, not to miss this summer at the Zoo is the Butterflies n’ Blooms exhibit back by popular demand. Guests can experience hundreds of graceful native butterflies sipping nectar from colorful flowers, basking in the sunlight and flying freely as they wander through our 1,000 sq. ft. outdoor flight house. Butterflies n’ Blooms is free with the Zoo admission and runs May 19 through September 23, weather permitting. It is also presented by Ford Motor Company.

EASTERN REGION
Summer in Kentucky means it’s time to get outside and Kentucky State Parks in the eastern part of the state are a great place to start! A good park to start your journey is Greenbo Lake State Resort Park near Greenup. The park is hosting three music festivals – July 14, August 11 and September 8 at its outdoor amphitheater. Plan to spend the night at the lodge or camp. The park also has a beautiful lake for fishing or paddling and a marina. Another music festival is planned at Pine Mountain State Resort Park in Pineville on September 21 with the first Appalachian Heritage Music Festival. Enjoy local musicians and beautiful mountain scenery while staying at the lodge or cottages at Pine Mountain. 40 |

For more details about events at Kentucky State Parks, along with lodging and camping reservations, visit
www.parks.ky.gov
Warm summer weather means that Levi Jackson State Park in London will host its “Wet and Wild Weekend” June 15-16. Water games and a campers-only pool party are planned. If you would like a beach to enjoy, check out Buckhorn Lake State Resort Park in Perry County. The park features a lodge, cottages, restaurant, marina and a beach along the lake. A fireworks show is planned for July 4. Jenny Wiley State Resort Park in Prestonsburg is offering guided canoe trips on John’s Creek on June 30 and July 21. These $25 trips include lunch. History buffs will enjoy Pioneer Week at Carter Caves State Resort Park July 23-29. The week is devoted to the 18th century pioneer days and various living history skills that guests can participate in or see practiced. Natural Bridge State Resort Park at Slade will host the annual Great Caterpillar Count on Sept. 8. More than 115 species of caterpillars have been identified at the park and this is a chance for nature lovers to see the diversity of caterpillars there. Presentations and guided hikes are included. Golfers should check out two excellent 18hole courses at Grayson Lake State Park and Yatesville Lake State Park. Both have campgrounds. Another well-regarded camping
area is Paintsville Lake State Park. All three parks have boating and fishing opportunities. Hikers have some great options. One is Kingdom Come State Park at Cumberland, at elevation 2,700 feet and magnificent views of the mountains. There’s also four primitive campsites available. Biking, picnics, mini golf and fishing are also available. Another hiking adventure is located at the Dawkins Line Rail Trail near Paintsville, an 18mile stretch that used to serve as a rail line. A tunnel and 24 trestles are included and the trail is open to hikers, cyclists and horseback riders. Don’t forget Cumberland Falls State Resort Park near Corbin. The falls are known as the “Niagara of the South” because of its 125-footwide curtain of water. Sometimes at night during a full moon, when conditions are right, mists from the falls produce a faint rainbow, known as a moonbow. The resort parks at Kentucky State Parks have lodges, cottages, restaurants and yearround recreational activities. The park system also has recreational parks and historic sites throughout the state. There are 30 Kentucky State Park campgrounds open from the spring through late fall.

Summer
SOUTH CENTRAL REGION
The summer in South Central Kentucky means excellent outdoor activities with lakes, golf courses and Kentucky State Park events. One of the most popular boating and fishing locations is Lake Cumberland State Resort Park in Jamestown. Lake Cumberland, known as the “Houseboat Capital of the World,” covers 50,000-acres and the park has a lodge, restaurant, marina with slips and boat rentals. If you camp, check out the holiday weekends for the 4th of July and Labor Day for special campground events. Another great Labor Day camping spot is Nolin Lake State Park at Mammoth Cave. The park plans games and other activities during the holiday weekend. There’s also a sandy beach at this park along with hiking trails. It’s a short distance to Mammoth Cave National Park. Green River Lake State Park near Campbellsville is another popular camping spot along a beautiful 8,200-acre lake. On June 2, the park will host Kids Outdoor Day, devoted to outdoor games, hikes, fishing, boating and much more. The marina features covered slips, rental houseboats, fishing boats, ski boats, jet skis, and pontoon boats. The park also has a beach, campground, gift shop and trails for hiking and horseback riding. Old Mulkey Meetinghouse State Historic Site in Tompkinsville will host the annual Celebration
of Quilts and Quilting June 8-10. The park will serve as the headquarters for this communitywide event. Quilts can be viewed at homes and businesses throughout the area and there will be displays and demonstrations at the park. You’ll find some great golf courses at Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park at Burkesville, General Burnside Island State Park near Somerset and Barren River Lake State Resort Park near Glasgow. Dale Hollow and Barren River offer overnight golf packages and have lodges, restaurants, marinas and campgrounds. Dale Hollow Lake is one of four Kentucky State Parks that offer equestrian campsites. The resort parks at Kentucky State Parks have lodges, cottages, restaurants and yearround recreational activities. The park system also has recreational parks and historic sites throughout the state. There are 30 Kentucky State Park campgrounds open from the spring through late fall.

PLACES TO GO BOWLING GREEN
| During the Civil War, Bowling Green was the Confederate Capital of Kentucky and now is known as the Corvette Capital of the world. Its historic downtown dates back to 1798. Some points of interest are The Corvette Museum and Kentucky Museum which showcases much of Kentucky’s history through photographs, manuscripts, and artifacts; as well as, an original log home decorated with authentic 1830’s furnishings.

In 2005, Burnside became the only town in Pulaski County to allow the sale of alcoholic beverages by the drink in qualified establishments.
