PLACES TO GO CADIZ
| If you took a step back in time and walked downtown Main Street before the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, you would find the same buildings dominating the city. After all these years the important elements of the city and county landscape still remain. The present day courthouse, completed in 1922 stands today, both serving as a center of county government and a witness to times past. Buildings built before we were born are reminiscent of days gone by, and yet they remain the basic building blocks of the city and its landscape.

KENTUCKY STATE PARKS
Summer in Kentucky is a great time for family vacations and trips and the Kentucky State Parks provide the perfect location. Park pools and beaches, campgrounds, marinas, horse trails, summer concerts and plenty of other recreational activities are all open and ready for a family adventure. The hardest part will be deciding which park to visit! The lodge at Greenbo Lake State Resort Park has re-opened following repair work from a fire, so you may want to check out the new digs at this beautiful park on a lake in northeastern Kentucky. The parks also have 12 golf courses across the state that offer excellent play to golfers of all skill levels. Here are a few Kentucky State Park events for the summer. 40 |

Make plans to visit a Kentucky State Park this year. They offer lodging, camping, restaurants, outdoor recreational activities, golf and history. For details, visit
www.parks.ky.gov
July July starts out with the 4th and several state parks will be offering free fireworks shows. They include Rough River Dam, Lake Cumberland, Lake Barkley and My Old Kentucky Home. Camping is popular during July – we recommend you make a reservation to be sure you have a camping spot. The Kentucky State Parks have 30 campgrounds across the state and include sites with electric and water hookups as well as primitive sites. Several parks offer summer outdoor dramas. They include Jenny Wiley, My Old Kentucky Home and Old Fort Harrod. Summer also means outdoor concerts and musical entertainment at many parks including Rough River Dam, General Butler, Fort Harrod, Greenbo Lake, Natural Bridge and Pine Mountain. White Hall State Historic Site near Richmond will hold its “Scandals and Ghost Stories” program July 21 and 28. Recommended for ages 12 and older.
August The solar eclipse on Aug. 21 will be seen in western Kentucky. Several Kentucky State Parks are offering lodging, camping and science programs related to the eclipse. Check the park website or call the park for details. Some may charge fees. Large crowds are expected, so plan ahead! The annual Hot August Blues Festival at Kenlake State Resort Park will be Aug. 24-26. Thousands gather on the water and land to listen to great music!
September The pools may close after Labor Day Weekend, but that doesn’t mean the activities slow down at Kentucky State Parks. The September calendar is full of late summer and early fall events! Carter Caves will host the annual Fraley Festival of Traditional Music Sept. 6-9. John James Audubon State Park will hold programs about the mysteries of the Monarch butterfly Sept. 9 and 16. History buffs will want to visit Fort Boonesborough State Park for the annual re-enactment of the 1778 Siege of Boonesborough Sept. 23-24. SUMMER 2017

PLACES TO GO BOWLING GREEN
| During the Civil War, Bowling Green was the Confederate Capital of Kentucky and now is known as the Corvette Capital of the world. Its historic downtown dates back to 1798. Some points of interest are The Corvette Museum and Kentucky Museum which showcases much of Kentucky’s history through photographs, manuscripts, and artifacts; as well as, an original log home decorated with authentic 1830’s furnishings.
BURNSIDE
| The community was originally settled at the juncture of the Cumberland River and the South Fork River. It was called Point Isabele, the town was renamed for General Ambrose Burnside who established a camp there during the war. A sign at the edge of town declares Burnside “Birthplace
of Boy Scouts of America”, and an official state historical society marker commemorates the troop. In 2005, Burnside became the only town in Pulaski County to allow the sale of alcoholic beverages by the drink in qualified establishments. Since then, Burnside annexed several miles of shoreline along Lake Cumberland in order to include Lee’s Ford Marina, allowing it to sell alcohol.

One of the area’s greatest recreational attractions is Green River Lake, which offers some of the finest fishing and boating in the state.
