Giving Back in Style: The 41st Annual Family House Polo Match

On Saturday, September 7, 2024, nearly 3,000 friends, sponsors, donors, and supporters gathered at Hartwood Acres for the 41st Annual Family House Polo Match, Presented by F.N.B. Corporation. This cherished Pittsburgh event, which began in 1983 as a modest fundraising eor t for the first Family House facility, has blossomed into one of Pittsburgh’s most anticipated traditions.

The annual polo match has become a vibrant celebration, uniting the community to support a vital cause. Each year, the event raises critical funds to help support the organization’s mission of providing families seeking medical treatment in Pittsburgh with a “home away from home.” This year, attendees enjoyed a fun-filled day that included a thrilling professional polo match, lively tailgating, delicious food and drinks, live music, and unique shopping opportunities. Families in attendance were treated to an array of children’s activities, ensuring a memorable experience for guests of all ages.

Also, taking place throughout the day were numerous family-friendly activities, including a car show from the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix and a half-time show from The Sewickley Hunt Club. The polo match featured two sponsored polo teams: The #1 Cochran Potomac Polo Club and the Howard Hanna Real Estate Services Pittsburgh Polo Club. The Potomac Polo Club edged out The Pittsburgh Polo Club, winning the match by a score of 9 to 8.

Family House Polo not only highlights the exciting sport, but also emphasizes the importance of community and support for those facing medical challenges. As this cherished event continues to grow, Family House Polo remains a testament to the spirit of giving and the unwavering support of the Pittsburgh community.

The 98th Cinderella Ball transforms the Carnegie Museums for a Fairy Tale Evening

Guests gathered inside the larger-than-life Hall of Sculpture at the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh in Oakland on Sunday June 16th, 2024 for the 98th annual presentation of Cinderella Ball.  A group of eight young ladies who completed the 2024 Leadership Forum for Young Women, each enjoyed a moment in the spotlight as they were escorted arm in arm by their fathers or presenters for a beautiful walk down the center aisle of the dramatic two-story room.  The ceremony, with music by The Rick Purcell Big Band, tapped into age-old traditions and fanfare including a dramatic entrance of the Floor Committee boys, all personally invited by the debutantes, who lined the center aisle on bent knee during the presentation.

Miss Gabrielle Nicole Hodas was awarded a scholarship from the Cinderella Women’s Committee for completing the most volunteer hours at this year’s primary beneficiary, the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium.  Mr. Ron Gruca, Chief Advancement Officer, attended on behalf of the organization which will also serve as the beneficiary for the upcoming 99th Cinderella Ball in 2025.

Moments later, Charles Leonard Deaktor II, a rising sophomore at Emory University, emerged from behind the curtain to perform his duties as the evening’s Prince Charming.  He blindly selected a name of one of the debutantes and carefully placed her name card in a glass slipper which was hand-delivered by to the evening’s MC, Mr. Brendan Reeves Kelley.  Miss Annalese Kimberly Bartolacci, a graduate of Fox Chapel High School, was crowned Cinderella and joined Prince Charming for a waltz at the front of the room.

It was a true family affair for all including the evening’s ball chairs, Mrs. Mary Dauer Colville, Mrs. Margaret Dauer Marquette, and Mrs. Sara Deutsch Scaife who each had their daughters, all past-debutantes, in attendance at the event.  Cocktails were held on the Music Hall Balcony followed by a formal dinner.  Tables decorated by florist Jeff Donati of Pete Donati & Sons and Ed Amori of Lendable Linens filled the two-story Carnegie Music Hall Foyer.  Between courses, guests mingled and posed for photos in front of a backdrop of greenery and white roses by The Fancy Fleur.  Guests finished their night enjoying miniature desserts from a beautiful display as they danced the fairytale night away to the sounds of The John Parker Band.

Pier Pressure

Pier Pressure is a one-of-a-kind annual party started by Martini Club PGH in 2023 that combines a social mixer with an electronic music & arts fest. This year they delivered an electrifying experience that exceeded all expectations. On September 7th, the banks of the Allegheny River came alive as the city’s growing young professional crowd gathered for an unforgettable celebration under the stars. From the moment the first beat dropped, it was clear that this was no ordinary party. With breathtaking views of the city shimmering over the river, the scene was set for a night to remember.

The energy was palpable as some of the city’s hottest EDM DJs took to the stage, keeping the crowd dancing all night long. Other attractions included art vendors, glass blowing, and tarot card reading. Vudi Phothisuk’s Canvas Collab added a unique touch, turning the event into an immersive experience as he invited the crowd to join him in creating paintings together. This wasn’t just a party—it was a testament to Pittsburgh’s vibrant social scene and its capacity to throw world-class events. Pier Pressure set a new standard for what a summer bash can be. If you missed it, you missed out on one of the best nights this city has seen in a long time. Make sure you’re on the guest list for the next one! Fabulous Fifties Fundraiser: From

Pin-Up’s to Poodle Skirts

Kelly O’s Diner (as seen on Diners, Drive-ins, & Dives) was the hot spot in town on July 27th for a 50’s-themed night out. Renowned Philanthropist Dr. Shellie Hipsky hosts the place to be this July as we revved up our engines for “The Fabulous Fifties: Pin Ups to Poodle Skirts” fundraiser bash. From leather pants, to pearls, red lipstick, polka dots, and pin-ups, the Socialites of the city took the diner by storm and style. Dressed to the nines in their favorite 50’s-inspired get-ups, FAME was fortunate to sponsor the best dressed awards.

No stranger to fundraising, Dr. Hipsky has been an Advocate, Philanthropist, 11-time bestselling Author, CEO, and one of the city’s most loved performers all in effort to support underprivileged women and youth. Her ‘Fabulous Fifties’ event will celebrate her birthday and 2 decades of recognition for her charity efforts while, once more, fundraised for her nonprofit the Global Sisterhood.

Some of Pittsburgh’s most prominent names like Beth Sheri, Kelly O, Dan Burda, and none other than Dr. Shellie in the flesh filled the house with designs and musical numbers. Tummy Treats designed the table spread of the most perfect desserts. They danced the night away, gave out fake tattoos, and brought out the hula hoops for throwback fun.

Mexican War Streets: The Door Event

On September 15th, the Mexican War Streets Society presented its 52nd annual House & Garden Tour -- the longest-running house tour in the City of Pittsburgh. This year brought perfect weather and another outstanding turnout! Many thanks to the homeowners who opened their doors to showcase each of their uniquely beautiful houses, and to the sponsors who support our annual fundraiser. The Mexican War Streets Society re-invest all proceeds from the House Tour back into the community through historic preservation and community engagement programs, greenspace conservation, and annual pledges of support for the Allegheny Commons Park Initiative and the renovation of the historic Allegheny YMCA.

PROFILE: Roslyn Neiman Howard Hanna Real Estate Services

Roslyn Neiman is a legend in Pittsburgh. The longtime Howard Hanna agent has been helping people find their dream homes for decades, bringing expertise and a touch of class to her negotiations on behalf of her clients. Best of all? Roz changes her clients lives! With her intimate knowledge of all things Pittsburgh, she introduces her clients to new restaurants, boutiques, and events. It is obvious why so many of Roz’s clients become her friends.

1. What made you enter the real estate industry?

Entered on urging from a friend. We both disliked our jobs and thought it might be a good change.

2. What significant changes have you seen recently?

There have been extraordinary changes in the industry. 100’s of rookies who have other full time jobs and think this is easy. As of August 17th because of the country wide law suit claiming real estate agencies were price fixing which was not true, we cannot take anyone into a house without a signed Buyers Agency that says if that client buys that house they will pay half of the commis-

sion to me. It’s going to be chaos.

3. What changes are you preparing for moving forward? The answer really resides in question 2. More rookies. Cut rate commissions. The real professionals will basically be struggling to get Buyers and Sellers to see you get what you pay for.

4. What is your work motto?

My work motto is that it’s never about me but always about the client.

5. What are you eating?

Eating? Very little because we are all anxious about how this new real estate model is going to work

6. What are your listening to?

Mostly listen to the news because everything in our world is tumultuous and turned upside down. Or listen to Springsteen albums and remembering the good times with them

PROFILE: Shawn Fox Oxford Development Company

Shawn Fox has been named the new President and CEO of Oxford Development Company, a top real estate development firm in Pittsburgh. Over the past decade, Shawn has made his mark as a real estate entrepreneur in the Pittsburgh area, completing several high-profile projects.

“On behalf of the owners, we are absolutely delighted to welcome Shawn Fox back to Oxford,” said Anne Lewis, Oxford Board Chair. “Shawn is a highly creative individual, trusted and respected, and is an experienced professional who demonstrates many capabilities. He has the innate capacity to provide Oxford with an unbridled opportunity to grow with a refreshed vision,” said Anne Lewis, Oxford Board Chair.

Shawn’s appointment signals Oxford’s focus on the

future, with fresh leadership set to explore both internal and external opportunities in a modern way. His experience as co-founder of Collier Capital, the development arm of RDC Inc., is expected to bring a new energy and direction to the company.

“I’m looking forward to the new opportunities that Shawn will bring. His return signifies a new beginning for Oxford – a commitment to grow through strategic development,” said Ms. Lewis.

Under Shawn’s leadership, Collier Capital has completed over $300 million in development over the past five years. His knack for creative partnerships and deal-making is impressive, especially in today’s market. Before co-founding Collier Capital, he was Director of Real Estate Investment

at Schneider Downs Corporate Finance LP, where he oversaw the firm’s real estate investment efforts.“I’m really looking forward to what’s ahead. Combining my entrepreneurial background with Oxford’s strong brand and resources gives us an exciting chance to take things to the next level,” said Shawn. Shawn takes over from Steven Guy, who is retiring later this year after 37 years with Oxford. In a previous stint at Oxford, Shawn and Steve teamed up to bring 3 Crossings, a 20-acre mixed-use development in the Strip District, to life. The project not only drew big corporations to the area but also opened the riverfronts to the public. “We’re focused on strategic growth,” said Shawn. “In business, if you’re not growing, you’re falling behind. Oxford has a fantastic team capable of handling a large volume of development, and we also have strong property management and brokerage teams to build on.

Our next move may involve expanding beyond Pittsburgh to diversify and achieve our big goals, likely starting in another Midwest market. But we’ll take it one step at a time.” Oxford has a long history of creating key economic hubs in areas like South Hills, Monroeville, Downtown, and more recently, the Strip District. The company prides itself on building communities and making sure their projects contribute to the economic development of the areas they work in. “We have a responsibility to be part of the economic growth of the communities we work in. We don’t create economic growth ourselves, but we contribute to it.”

Shawn lives in Shaler with his wife Nicole and daughters Jenna and Peyton. In his free time he enjoys playing basketball, hiking, biking and walking his dog.

PROFILE: Selina Shultz Conflict Lab

1. What are you eating?

Since COVID, I can’t get enough of “meal salads”. The more different kinds of vegetables in them the better. I originally got hooked by scrolling my favorite influencer chef feeds to find some new creation. Now I have been making them long enough that I have a repertoire of bases and dressings. I have fun tweaking them and trying to figure out the best nut or herb to throw into them. I am a bit of a cilantro fiend. I have a great cilantro dressing that even my friends who don’t normally like cilantro love.

2. What are you listening to?

Jack Johnson, Ilona Knopfler, or John Mayer when I cook. Some really good cello music when I am working. Beyonce or Prince when I am working out. Noah Kahn when I am doing a long drive. Our family always pics a “song of summer” every year when we are at Stone Harbor. This year it was Million Dollar Baby by Tommy Richman.

3. What do you do to maintain your healthy lifestyle?

I have been taking yoga since 2009 with Dana Malcolm, formerly of Yoga on Broad. If you have ever taken a class with Dana, you know there is nothing out there like it. It is a strength Vinyasa Flow that is always put to the best mix by her husband Brendan. I now give myself

the gift of two private morning sessions a week. I hike in the woods with our bull mastiff, Neville and I just added once a week strength session with trainer Rona Oka.

3. How do you see the Conflict Lab in the future? Since I moved my practice from inside a law firm to opening The Conflict Lab, we have been amazed how the work has grown. We have continued to provide quality divorce and civil mediation services, as well as mediation and conflict training. However, we have been honored to facilitate for large international organizations such as Green Peace International and work with long term community projects such as facilitating the discussions to create the Memorials for the victims of the Pittsburgh Synagogue Shooting and the Ghost Ship Warehouse Fire in Oakland, California. We are also excited to broaden our work with women leaders through our Emerge Women Retreats that teach them how to “Play Bigger” in both their professional and personal lives by navigating the internal conflict most women face due to contradictory societal expectations. We also see new opportunities to convene community dialogue to combat polarization and hate. It feels like we are just getting started and are excited by what is coming next.

PROFILE: Gary Racan Racan Productions

Gary Racan’s career as a professional singer has spanned the decades, with no end in sight!

From producing a band in the 70s that traveled nationally, performing at clubs to being asked and replacing the original lead for 16 years in a band that had 12 hits on the charts to today producing and still belting his 4 octave range voice with his nationally acclaimed Gary Racan & studio e band- that happens to be one of the top private event production bands in the country!

Their client list is a who’s who and they expect and get the best in music at their event! This polished group of musicians rehearse all music of their ever expanding repertoire in the Racan Studio/ a 1400 sq ft studio that resembles a small nightclub! Kim Racan, Garys wife & manager- said when they were asked to do a gala for Jerome Bettis- his mom & aunt came to hear the band at the studio and said “you should charge admission to come here!”

Gary & his studio e band are now under the ownership of Racan Productions- formerly studio e entertainment. Kim is sole proprietor, after having been partners for 22 years with the successful event planner Bonnie Walker. “When I became partners with Bonnie, we showed her great music and she taught us how to run a fabulous event. Bonnie is still one of my best friends, but I am now producer and owner of the business!”

Their schedule is like a crossword puzzle- having just performed for the Animal Friends Gala (at their unbelievable campus in Pittsburgh) next week in Erie at the Bayside Convention Center, for Hamut Health. Then Oct 9 in Cleveland, performing for the Cleveland Cavaliers at their gala and the next day departing to  the Amalfi Coast in Italy for a very special wedding! Back into town to a private party in Ohio and the next day performing at the Green Valley Memorial Hospital Gala in Washington, PA. Gary and his studio e band

are booked into 2026, and each event they do is a different presentation of music- they are not “cookie cutter- they learn songs for their clients and tailor the song list with the musical likes of their client but adding “ the band is like your bar- you just don’t serve the drink you like…you have an assortment of drinks for peoples tastes” and that is what a private events band has to do: present ALL music thru the decades and genres, to satisfy all but making sure the client hears what they love!

In life, we all like to give back, to honor someone deserving, a “feel good” and Gary and Kim have produced a concert that does just that: Warriors Rock. Warriors Rock is a musical tribute concert that stars and honors veterans from the zip code the concert is being performed on. This is their 15th year of presenting the shows- and it has taken them from the deck of the USS Midway, in San Diego to Sheboygan, WI to the Hamptons in NY to Florida, Clarksburg, WV and of course, our great communities in PA.

The concert is a very unique, moving concert that stars 8- 10  veterans. They are interviewed and our great producer  edits them into mini documentary videos that are presented throughout the show. The Veteran introduce themselves, when they served, what branch, what their role was- they tell a brief story and each interview ends with “song that reminded them of home when they were deployed” and the band onstage kicks into that song! Everyone loves music and to combine that with a story makes this a fabulous show!

This concert is a 5 star production and their next concert will be at Connellsville HS auditorium Nov 2 at 7PM. This is the 9th concert that CAHS Patriots leader Linda Shearer has brought to the area and the concert will feature country star Darryl Worley, a fabulous performer and a real supporter of our military!

PROFILE: John Krena Four Winds Gallery

Since 1922, the Santa Fe Indian Market has stood as North America’s largest and most prestigious juried Indigenous art market. This renowned event unites Native artists, visitors, and collectors in a celebration of the vibrant creativity and rich culture of Native American communities. We are excited to present our exceptional acquisitions from this year’s Indian Market!

1. What made you enter the jewelry business?

Carol and I began taking hiking and camping trips to the southwest in the early 70s and immediately fell in love with the native people and their culture. After carefully figuring out what was authentic and of good quality, we began visiting the Pueblos and meeting individual artists. When Carol began wearing our acquisitions in Pittsburgh in the 70s - it created quite a fuss! We began by doing flea markets, “Tupperware” type parties for our friends, and in general just putting ourselves out there. I was working in Weirton Steel, wasn’t sure what to do with my life, but we decided to take a leap of faith, opening Four Winds Trading Post on Walnut Street in October

of 1974. Likely one of the first all Native galleries in the Eastern United States.

4. What is the secret to your success?

I guess the secret is tried and true, hard work, concentration, and a love of what we do. Also we strive to educate and treat all of our clients the way we would like to be treated. We have never been high pressure, elitist, or not treated everyone that comes through the door with respect and friendliness.

5. What are you eating?

Carol and I eat pretty healthy, mainly fresh seafood, creative pastas and lots of smoothies. Try to avoid any processed or junk foods.

6. What are your listening to?

A pretty eclectic blend - right now - new Meshel and Degeocello, lots of Miles Paris, new T Bone Burnett, Hurray for the Riff Raff - and lots of jazz always.

SLASH: “‘The Pusher’ is an old Steppenwolf song. Yeah, I’ve always loved Steppenwolf, but I particularly like this song, and it was a song that we used to do in Slash’s Blues Ball back in the 90s. I definitely wanted to bring it back around and it’s a good example of a song that’s not a standard blues song. It’s a 60s rock and roll sort of drug song. Anyway, I had the idea to do it and Chris Robinson was the first guy that I brought into the studio, and he was totally down to do it. He came into to the studio and brought his harmonica and we did three different takes, all entirely different, and just played the harmonica and vocals live. We took the one that we liked the best and that was it.”

the lines of the live Cream version. It’s definitely influenced more by Cream and their sound. I met Gary Clark Jr. a few years ago and he’s probably one of the best young blues guitar players to come along in a really long time, a soulful, emotive guitar player and vocalist. Gary came down to the studio and we kept the whole live version with our blues band, and then he did a killer vocal.”

One of the great things about Muddy Waters was there was a certain sexual quality to his voice, his tone, and his cadence. Then he added this insane fucking rhythm section that was just like, I don’t know, I can’t think of any music that’s really (excuse my French), but that you want to fuck to more. And, anyway, so I wanted to cover this particular song, but do it in a unique way… Because it’s a commonly covered riff and so many people have their own take on this particular very, very simple tune. It’s a rhythm and a certain kind of very simple three note pattern. We did a version of it that was as close to the original vibe that the Muddy Waters thing had. Our drummer who played on this record is Michael Jerome, and he’s got that groove really, really down and he was the perfect drummer to be able to put this together. Once the music was basically done, I’d always thought about Billy Gibbons doing the vocals. I chased Billy down and he added the vocals and some guitar in a studio in Palm Springs. That’s how it all came together. It’s very live, a very live sounding track, which is really cool. It sounds like you’re in a bar somewhere. I had Les Stroud play on harmonica. He’s a friend of mine and he was always talking about his harp playing and it turns out he’s a really fucking accomplished harp player. So, Les came down to our studio and put the harp on it.”

4. “Oh Well” featuring Chris Stapleton on vocals. Written by Peter Alan

SLASH: “So, this is the original Fleetwood Mac, which was founded by Peter Green, one of the greatest singer-songwriter-guitar players, he’s less known in the public, but very well known to us guitar players re the 60s British blues and he’s up there with Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Mick Taylor. He sort of had a misadventure with drugs and disappeared early in his career, but he had some great fucking songs and ‘Oh Well’ is one of my favorites. I remember hearing the song on the radio when I was probably 13, they used to play both the older version of Fleetwood Mac and the new version of the band with Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham a lot. I always loved this song, and it’s a great guitar riff. I jammed it with the Blues Ball back in the ‘90s, and I’ve played it live here and there. I knew from the beginning I wanted to do the song on this record. It was also one of the songs that I was trying to figure out who would be the right vocalist for it, and one of the ideas I had was Chris Stapleton, who is one of the most brilliant singer songwriters today. He’s also got such a gritty and distinctive voice, so I called him up and he did an amazing job. I mean, his voice is so cool.”

SLASH: “This is one of the blues standards that I’ve been playing with Johnny and Teddy in our blues band since we first hooked up way back in like 1997 or ‘96 maybe. It was the first

song on my list of songs to do for this record. The original was done by Freddie King, and we stayed somewhat true to the original arrangement-wise. We kick the tempo up a little bit just to make it rock a little harder. It’s a very open-ended type of a one, four, five blues progression, but it’s got a little bit of a swing to it. It’s just a cool song. And then I asked Dorothy, who’s this great American blues and rock singer, who has a distinctive raspy and soulful voice, to sing it. Dorothy came in and did a kickass job on it. There’s a lot of different versions of the song out there, so I sent her some of the ones that I liked, and she came up with her own version of the vocal approach for the song and it came out amazing.”

SLASH: “Oh, now, this is an interesting story. When I got the Blues band back together, I had an idea for the overall feel and the vocalists in my head for the whole thing, and as we went from song to song, we found the right fit. In our conversations about singers, Iggy Pop is somebody that I’ve been friends with and worked with for many years, and I really have the utmost admiration and respect for him. Johnny, our bassist mentioned that Iggy said in an interview he’d like to do something in the blues genre. I’d never heard that, so I called Iggy, and we talked about the record. Since I didn’t have a song earmarked for him yet, I asked him if there was a particular song he would like to do, and he said ‘Awful Dream’ by Lightnin’ Hopkins. Listening to the original track, I imagine it’s Lightnin’ Hopkins sitting on a stool with an acoustic with a pickup, and a very old school, primitive version of an electric-acoustic, and then there’s someone in the background playing very loose drums, and you can tell it’s a one-take almost made up on the spot recording. So, I very loosely learned that version. Iggy came to my studio in L.A., and we just sat down, he was on one stool, and I was on another, and I had my man, Michael Jerome come in and play some drums, and we just grabbed the tape live. So, it’s really, really very cool, and spontaneous. Iggy’s interpretation of that song is actually sort of sublime. And

I think it’s something that nobody’s ever heard from him. Then there’s something cool on it at the very end of the track. We’re just playing the vamp out and I have my headphones on and I’m hearing this thing that sounds like a harmonica and I turn around and it’s Iggy singing the harmonica parts. It is really cool. So yeah, that was a very special moment on the record.”

SLASH: “One of my favorite all-time favorite Albert King songs, and one of the coolest blues rock riffs that I grew up listening to ‘Born Under a Bad Sign’ was a no brainer and we did our own version of it and created our own arrangement. Then Paul Rogers, who is somebody I’ve worked with before and is a good friend, came into the studio. You know, he’s got the most amazing blues voice, he’s somebody that everybody in the 60s in England admired. Paul is a top blues vocalist, he was in Free and went on to do Bad Company, and then he did a bunch of different things after that. I asked him if he would sing it, and he did an amazing job. I can’t even say amazing job—it’s just so perfect.”

SLASH: This song is the most left-of-center for a sort of blues cover record because it’s a song by The Temptations, which is really R&B. From 1972, I grew up with this song and it was a really popular song in the early ‘70s when I was a kid. It’s a cool song and an adventure in and of itself. The original version is super long, as in 10 minutes long, if not longer. And it’s got

this amazing instrumental arrangement to it. I mean, the whole song is amazing. We used to jam it back in the 90s with another band that I had called Snakepit. Johnny Griparic, our bass player, was also in. So, I definitely wanted Demi to do this song because the subject matter of the song is basically about the unsavory habits of an absent father who eventually passes away that the kids are asking their mom about, as in ‘What’s this about our dad that we’ve never met, and we hear all these stories about?’ It’s a very dark and personal kind of subject matter, therefore whoever sings it can’t just cover it for the sake of covering it, they have to be able to relate to it in some way. I’ve been friends with Demi Lovato for a few years now and I wanted a strong female voice to sing it. She has that really young and powerful voice that has this kind of, not an entirely innocent delivery, but definitely an almost childlike quality to it. I asked her to do it because Demi’s had some interesting stories in her past and she jumped at the idea. I had no idea how she was going to react to the question, but she totally knew and related to the song. Demi came in and did an amazing job. It was really, really fun to do this song with her.
