Senator John Heinz History Center Hosts 11th Annual Bocce Tournament & Festival
T
he Senator John Heinz History Center hosted a successful 11th Annual Bocce Tournament & Festival this past summer, raising over $200,000 for the museum’s Italian American Program.
Chaired by Michael Mascaro of Mascaro Construction Company, this year’s tournament and festival was held at a new location – Acrisure Stadium. Thirty-six four-person teams competed for first place in a double-elimination tournament as spectators cheered them on and enjoyed Italian food and live music by The Jaggerz, The New Pure Gold, and The Aces with special guest Shari Richards. The winning team was T.D. Patrinos Painting. Founded in 1990, the Italian American Program is dedicated to preserving the history and culture of Italian Americans in Western Pennsylvania. Its collection is one of the largest in the country and home to artifacts, archival materials, and oral histories that document the pivotal role Italian Americans play in shaping the region.

ouring rain didn’t stop 1,500 people from coming out to the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium July 19th for the much-anticipated return of Ice Cream Fundae. Under the shelter of umbrellas and hoods, kids and adults alike enjoyed 12 flavors of Graeter’s Ice Cream dished out by our generous sponsors, including Huntington Bank, Henderson Brothers, Highmark, UPMC Health Plan, Lamar Advertising and many more. Highmark’s Community Campfire S’mores took home the People’s Choice Award for favorite flavor. Thanks to everyone who volunteered, purchased tickets or spread the word about Ice Cream Fundae. Together we raised $103,000 for our kids and families.

Sports Museum to Host Pittsburgh Premiere of Bruno Sammartino Film
Presented by the History Center’s Italian American Program and the Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum, the film screening will explore how an Italian immigrant survived the horrors of WWII and became a legendary wrestler.
T
he Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum – part of the Senator John Heinz History Center’s family of museums – will host the Pittsburgh premiere screening of the film Bruno Sammartino on Thursday, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m. As told through the experiences of the world champion himself and those closest to him, Bruno Sammartino details the remarkable life journey of a humble Italian immigrant from Pizzoferrato, Abruzzo, Italy, who became one of the best known and most respected wrestlers to step into the ring. The documentary follows Sammartino’s improbable rise as a man who held honor above fame and dignity above fortune. After fleeing the Nazis with his family as a young boy during World War II, he arrived in Pittsburgh and started a new life. This WWWF World Champion and Hall of Fame honoree became one of the most successful professional wrestlers of his time, selling out Madison Square Garden a staggering 188 times. He also held the World Heavyweight title twice. Narrated by KDKA-AM radio host Larry Richert, Bruno Sammartino features interviews with the champion, family members, and close friends, including emotional comments from superstar Arnold Schwarzenegger, who inducted Sammartino into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2013. The program will feature commentary by Richert and by Darryl Sammartino, Bruno’s son. The event is co-presented by the Sports Museum and the History Center’s Italian American Program, which is dedicated to preserving the history and culture of Italian Americans in Western

Pennsylvania. Founded in 1990, the Italian American collection is one of the largest in the country and home to artifacts, archival materials, and oral histories that document the pivotal role Italian Americans play in shaping the region. Tickets to the film screening are $15 for adults, $10 for members, and $5 for children. Advanced registration is available online. The screening will be held in the Mueller Center on the museum’s fifth floor. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and attendees can explore Pittsburgh’s rich boxing and wrestling history inside the two-floor Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum prior to the event. The Senator John Heinz History Center, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution and the largest history museum in Pennsylvania, presents American history with a Western Pennsylvania connection. The Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum is a museum within a museum, comprehensively presenting the region’s remarkable sports story through hundreds of artifacts and interactive experiences for visitors of all ages. The History Center and Sports Museum are located at 1212 Smallman Street in the city’s Strip District. The History Center’s family of museums includes the Sports Museum; the Fort Pitt Museum in historic Point State Park; and Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village, a National Historic Landmark located in Avella, Pa., in Washington County. ittsburgh Opera, Eons Fashion Boutique and Studio Booth presented an operatic fashion extravaganza from the Eons Archives. Diva Dreams and Fashion Queens showcased more than 100 years of fashion originals, including looks from Karl Lagerfeld, Ceil Chapman, Thierry Mugler, Halston, and Claire McCardell. While the couture-coiffed models swept the stage with theatrical flair, the opera’s best trilled and thrilled, offering an outstanding accompaniment. At the finale, guests gladly paid a standing ovation tribute to the true star of the evening, Eons owner, fashion show creator, and one of Pittsburgh’s true jewels, Richard Parsakian.

A
ttack Theatre brought the issues of the pandemic to the apron, (the front of the stage) with a book launch party for Waiting in the Wings, Pittsburgh’s Dancers Experiencing the Pandemic. The book is a collaboration between well-known Pittsburgh photographer Anita Buzzy Prentiss and Kathleen McGuire Gaines, the founder of Minding the Gap, a social good company that seeks to see mental health regarded with the same seriousness as physical health in dance culture. Buzzy’s photographs and the dancers’ quotes about how they were affected by the isolation of the pandemic resonated with guests, whose applause filled the room, echoing the feelings of happiness many dancers felt at being together again. A portion of the proceeds supported Minding the Gap’s mental health programming for dancers.

Grace Leer, Nashville’s WHIRL girl! American Idol star releases self-titled debut
I
n a wonderful turn of events, Grace Leer’s publicist sent along this new album just as finishing touches were going into this issue of WHIRL. One listen to “He Brought A Girl” revealed the line, “I thought I’d give the him-and-I thing a whirl,” and that closed the deal. Grace’s accompanying video is hilarious, clever, and one to put on repeat. Sing it, WHIRL girl! Grace Leer’s self-titled debut EP, a 7-song project produced by Dan Fernandez, Jared Hampton (LANCO) and Daniel Agee, features three new tracks including the somber tale of love and loss in “The One,” the heart-wrenching “Meant To Be” and the classic cover of Dwight Yoakam’s “A Thousand Miles From Nowhere.”
“It’s been a dream of mine since I was a little girl to record and release music. This is definitely a “pinch me” moment that I get to put out my first project,” says Leer. These songs are a look at my heart and my life, things I personally went through as well as influences of country music I listened to growing up. So many people went into this project and it is something we are all very proud to share to the world!”

In addition to her musical talents, Leer loves expressing her creativity in the kitchen. In the summer of 2020, Leer went live on Instagram for the first time to cook a meal and had such an amazing response that she continued the tradition. She even asked fans to help her name the series and “Taste with Grace,” was born. Releasing a digital cookbook in conjunction with this project was a no-brainer. “Taste with Grace” was created by my fans and I could not release this debut EP without releasing my first ever cookbook to share with them! Tom Mosser Really Big Faces
Energy Innovation Center fills up with more than 600 guests
A
rtist Tom Mosser brought huge attention to many locals with his dramatic art show. Guests lined the halls at the Energy Innovation Center to see some of Pittsburgh’s favorite recognizable faces, including Cindy and Rich Engler, Paul Martino, Aldene Lacaria, Renee and Lucas Piatt, of course, Mosser’s golden retriever, Lucas. Using his signature “Flow”, “Funnel Flow” and “Loop” techniques to create the Really Big Faces, Tom was inspired by the scale of the portrait art of Chuck Close, the drip technique of Jackson Pollock, the color palette of Andy Warhol, and drawing style of Bernie Fuchs.

T
he Pittsburgh Penguins 6.6K Run and Family Walk presented by Highmark is celebrating 10 years and running! Since 2013, the Mario Lemieux Foundation and Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation have teamed up every October to kickoff the start of a new hockey season with the annual event which welcomes thousands of Penguins fans to run, or walk, the streets of Pittsburgh. In the past nine years, Penguins 6.6K participants have raised over $1.3M for the Lemieux Foundation’s cancer research and patient care programs and the Penguins Foundation’s youth initiatives.
This year’s event will be held in-person on Sunday, October 9th at PPG Paints Arena and commemorate the race’s 10-year anniversary with a special t-shirt, medal and a salute to the participants who have attended each year since inception. And, if you needed more encouragement to join, Mario Lemieux will be on-hand at the finish line to congratulate all who complete their 6.6K run or 3.3K walk. ebster’s dictionary defines risk regarding investments as follows: the change that an investment (such as a stock or commodity) will lose value.1 While the stock market experienced significant losses during the early days of the pandemic in March of 2020, overall, the past few years resulted in positive returns in the equities markets. These returns can cause investors to have nearsightedness regarding volatility in the market. But as we know from history and our own experience, when equities enter a period of extended volatility or loss, it can be detrimental to our financial and mental well-being.
Your composition of stocks and bonds makes up what is called your asset allocation. Determining the appropriate asset allocation for our clients is an important step of the financial planning process. We do this by trying to understand what our client’s risk comfort level is, often referred to in the industry as risk profiling.
We believe your risk profile is determined by many factors: • Reaction to market volatility, which means how much market loss can you sustain before you want to react. If you find yourself wanting to liquidate investments in a down market, your allocation to equities may be too high for your risk comfort. • Behavioral finance simply refers to how you view and make other financial decisions. A few examples of this are comfort level of fluctuating income, views on debt, desired to maintain purchasing power. By understanding how a client perceives risk in situations outside of the stock market can be a powerful tool in determining one’s allocation. • Cash flow analysis is the process of determining the amount of risk is needed to be taken on for you to meet your goals. • Desired risk comfort level is an art and not a science. We use the tools to help guide us to an appropriate allocation, and along with frequent communication regarding your desired level of risk, asset allocation is finalized. Your risk profile is not something that should change annually but rather be reviewed as you achieve milestones in your life. When clients move from the phase of asset accumulation to asset distribution, the ability to handle volatility may not be the same as when you were working. Retirement is a good example of when your risk profile should be evaluated. When your risk profile is in line with your asset allocation, periods of market volatility can be weathered with a much calmer approach. I
n May, musician and public figure David Correy announced via his social media that he had successfully sought treatment for alcohol abuse and depression. David, as a fan favorite from “The X Factor” and a well known artist, has openly become an advocate for mental health.
David Correy, a man born into a poverty-stricken family in Recife, Brazil was adopted as a young boy just before his 1st birthday by an American couple. David received his first big break when he appeared on the second season of the syndicated television show “The X Factor”. Wowing judges and audiences with his talents, Correy was able to touch hearts, and the following ripple effect was the launching pad that introduced him to the world. As of 2019, the immensely talented Correy has built his very own independent empire with the self-funded label Urban Rock Records. Amassing a following of roughly 2 million people on social media, his talents have afforded him the opportunity to collaborate with musical heavyweights such as Wyclef Jean. Aloe Blacc, Fat Joe, Bangladesh, B-Harv, Rock Mafia, DJ Paul and many more. David’s ability to mesh raw soul, pop, hip-hop, all with a new age and global sensibility is what separates him from his contemporaries and has captured the hearts and ears of fans worldwide.

What most influences your music, business drive, and cultural passions?
How is it living in Western PA? It’s been a breath of fresh air, a feeling of being reborn. The city of Pittsburgh has embraced me with open arms, and has served as a launching pad to become the man I should have been a long time ago. It protected me and then saved me from myself. Being born in Brazil, raised in the DMV, and traveling the world; I never in a million years thought I’d land here. God makes no mistakes, and I’m exactly right where I should be. I recently got married, set up shop and have been hitting the ground musically catching a whole new wave of inspiration.

My passion comes from my life. Music is like a religion to me. Through all the trials, tribulations, and triumphs, music was always there for me. I genuinely believe music’s influence is one of the, if not the most powerful things in the world. Look at like this, it’s the one thing that can bring a group of people into a room together who might never meet, or hang out with each other. I honestly don’t know where I would be without music. Probably dead, or in the streets. I always looked at music as an escape into a place I was always safe. I’ve always operated from such a pure space and still do always. I took my plunge into acting to help break my horrific stage fright in 3rd grade. I played piano from kindergarten to 8th grade. I was awarded four year scholarships to both Archbishop Spalding High School & the legendary Berklee College of Music. My musical likes are honestly like shaking a magic 8-ball. You never know what you are going to get with me. From Michael Jackson, Prince, Marvin Gaye, Linkin Park, Journey, 2Pac, Nipsey Hussle, Jazmine Sullivan, Indie Arie, Lauryn Hill, Big Pun, to Smokie Norful, Tasha Cobbs, Andrea Bocelli, Garth Brooks, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey lol the list goes on. This is what makes me such a widely diverse artist, which is demonstrated in my music. There are a million and one amazing singers and musicians, but what is going to set you apart as your legacy when you start to slow down? I adopted these fierce traits from my parents, who were two unmatched hustlers who taught me how to work, and established my company Urban Rock Records in 2010. From merchandise, studios, tattoos, jewelry, in house production (videography, photography, graphics, online promotion), the band and more. Alcohol use can take a huge amount of energy and can be equally destructive. To talk about it takes bravery and seems to be motivated by a desire to enlighten and inspire others. Can you please explain? Imagine working for everything you ever dreamt of since a little kid, accomplishing everything you ever set out to do in your mind which took years of sacrifice and lose the things you love the most all in a matter of seconds, back to back. My parents were my everything. My rock, my foundation, my everything. I felt like I was an orphan all over again screaming in a crowded room but no one could hear me or see me. I took a plunge into what became an enjoyable thing, to a destructive dead end abyss. Alcohol controlled my entire life. The wildest part about it was, I was still active and kicking ass, but I was f**king miserable. I hated everyone and everything. It was a sick feeling to want everyone around you to suffer just because I was suffering. Moving to Pittsburgh, meeting my wife changed my whole perspective. It made me believe again in REAL LOVE. After so much betrayal from the closest ones to me, and the soulless music industry, I almost threw in the towel. Back to what Pittsburgh/Western PA has meant to me; it completely changed the trajectory of my life. I had a few failed attempts at treatment, but deep down inside, I just wasn’t ready. I knew this last time in, I was ready to COMPLETELY change my life. I went to the amazing treatment center “DREAMLIFE” in Donegal, PA. I owe that place so much and am forever grateful. I had been battling alcoholism for almost 10 years, and when I hated the man I saw in the mirror aka tired of being tired, made the change to strengthen my relationship with God. Being in RECOVERY for me is my life now; acceptance, healing, and maturity. To anyone reading this, you are not alone, you are strong enough, and it’s NEVER too late to change if YOU want to.

What are your upcoming projects, and will you be performing or having any events in Pittsburgh soon? I’m constantly working on music daily, sharpening my skills, adding more tricks to my bag, and feeding my amazing support base weekly. I owe them that, and truly believe I have the best supporters. I don’t call them fans, I call them supporters. My movement, I refer to them as “DREAMERS”, who see no limits to their potential and are constantly working towards new goals in this precious life we live once. I’m looking to drop my new project on my birthday October 8th, and plan on performing in Pittsburgh around that time. Stay tuned.

uantum Theatre, in collaboration with Chatham Baroque, and supported by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, will present Idaspe by Riccardo Broschi at the Byham Theater for just five performances, October 7-15, 2022. Acclaimed London composer, writer and director Claire van Kampen led the creation of this marriage of contemporary theater and Baroque-era opera, and Daniel Nesta Curtis will conduct. This will mark the FIRST EDITION of Idaspe in modern notation.

“I’ve always been attracted to masterful artists speaking through an artistic language different from my own, and Quantum’s most successful projects represent those collaborations,” said Quantum Theatre’s Artistic Director Karla Boos. “Idaspe is an ultimate coming together of artists across disciplines, each bringing mastery from their field and respect for what others bring to our great joint venture.” The story follows two children from the post-war Middle East who came to Naples as refugees. They are separated in an underworld where organized crime is more welcoming than “legitimate” business. As adults, the siblings become powerful bosses of two opposing clans. Artaserse, the more brutal, kidnaps two women from his rivals, an incident that will force a face-to-face clash in an escalating war. The kidnapped women are not the only prisoners in this story, where every character is held captive by circumstances and their emotions. Their existential struggle is conveyed in transcendent music. Might they find that all-consuming power and violence are not the only means to survive? Chatham Baroque’s three Artistic Directors (Andrew Fouts, violin; Patricia Halverson, viola da gamba; Scott Pauley, theorbo and baroque guitar) have been busy creating a new musical score for Idaspe, working closely with van Kampen. Chatham Baroque says the score existed only in a dusty old 366-page hand-copied manuscript from the 1730s. “The original opera would have run for more than 3.5 hours,” said Chatham Baroque. “Our collective job was to pare it down to a reasonable running time, while preserving the most important parts of the story and the very best of the music. We can’t wait to start rehearsals for Idaspe—to really see and hear it come to life again for the first time since the 1730s.”

Idaspe brings in world-renowned artists to Pittsburgh, including a diverse cast, featuring Vivica Genaux, John Holiday, Karim Sulayman, Pascale Beaudin, Zoie Reams, Shannon Delijani and Wei En Chan.
The company was founded by Karla Boos over 30 years ago, and she still serves as Artistic Director, often directing original projects, such as her adaptations of literature (Peter Ackroyd’s Chatterton; Jose Saramago’s All the Names). Quantum loves music and has produced many unusual operas (Osvaldo Golijov’s Ainadamar; Michael Nyman’s The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat; Astor Piazzolla’s Maria de Buenos Aires) and even folk operas (Dark of the Moon; Looking for Violeta).
The award-winning artistic team includes Antonia Franceschi, Choreographer; Narelle Sissons, Scenic Designer; Mary Ellen Stebbins, Lighting Designer; and Ilona Somogyi, Costume Designer. Tickets are available now for Idaspe through the Byham Box Office. Ticket prices range from $23-$51. A former Baroque project inspired Idaspe: Quantum and Chatham Baroque made a pastiche based on Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale, setting dozens of pieces from the Baroque canon with Shakespeare’s text. Contemporary plays are often on Quantum’s schedule, often from other countries, and Quantum has made several original translations (Roland Schimmelpfenning’s Arabian Nights; Jon Fosse’s Dream of Autumn). In Pittsburgh, it is the most international of theaters, bringing contemporary artists of all kinds to work in its ‘laboratory’ as often as it can.

ctress Paige Spara has charmed audiences for five seasons with her performance on the fan favorite medical drama series, The Good Doctor. After an outpouring of support from fans for her initial recurring role as ‘Shaun Murphy’s’ (Freddie Highmore) sweet neighbor ‘Lea Dilallo’, Spara found her role on the show expand both episodically, becoming a series regular in season 2, and narratively as her character finally married her former neighbor in the season 5 finale. Season 6 of The Good Doctor will return this Fall on ABC. A native of Washington, Pennsylvania, Spara graduated from Marymount Manhattan College in New York with a degree in Theater before making the move to Los Angeles. Since then, she has worked steadily in film (Open Road’s Home Again), television (ABC Family’s Kevin from Work) and music videos (Lauv’s “I Like Me Better”).

Your childhood sounds idyllic. What are some highlights of life in Washington, PA? My childhood was filled with being surrounded by my huge family 24/7. We’re Italian and lived near Pittsburgh, so screaming was considered talking, and breaking out into songs was normal. I also had a list of weekly chores from the age of 10 until I graduated from high school that were expected to be completed. Washington, PA, or “Washpa” as we like to call it, is very small. So, I had lots of time to dream there and become disciplined in my work ethic. Sneaking out of bed on school nights to watch movies on AMC with my dad was how I became obsessed with movies. We would watch everything from Goldie Hawn classics to Abbott and Costello comedy legends; that’s when we bonded the most. My mom would support me by coming home after a shift at work to drive me down into Pittsburgh for theater training and auditions. Every Friday night, she would take me to Blockbuster, where I’d be allowed to pick any movie I wanted. My mom would also let me turn my fireplace into a stage for bits and songs after we would see a play downtown or a movie, and we would reenact our favorite moments together, or rather I’d try, and my mom would be laughing at me. Still, it’s kind of awesome now that I think of it. Looking back, I was extremely supported by my family and town in both spoken and unspoken ways. I also grew up in Washington, PA, and actually think I know your father! People are often surprised about the amount of talent that comes from a small town upbringing, but for you, it seems it was a springing board. What people/experiences helped to propel you to national levels so quickly? Yay for Washpa’ers! I love hearing that! I feel small towns give such a strong springboard. Personally, it has always kept me humble. The work and pride I’ve seen in the people around me while I grew up here is something I feel like I carry with me always. Firstly, I strive to be kind to the people around me and take pride in the fact that we are able to work and provide for ourselves and our family, which is something to cherish. Growing up in Washpa taught me to never judge a person by anything other than what they choose to show you. To treat everyone as their own person respectively and not who their family or background tells us they are. This also allowed me to dream and actually believe I could be an actor.

The Good Doctor is in its sixth season. How does the series resonate with you on a personal level? I honestly can’t believe I’m in a season 6 of something! CRAZY. I feel so grateful and excited to continue with this story. I have loved and still love translating Lea and Shaun’s relationship on this show. Their story breaks down stigmas surrounding what a relationship between two people should be like. To be able to play a character that has grace in her humility and is with a partner who, in lots of ways, has the same is something I feel so grateful to be a part of because it creates a dialogue around what bonds people together. I think more than ever, audience members need an escape into a world full of hope and love, and hopefully, they find comfort and inspiration. What music are you listening to? I am currently in “WashPa” visiting family, so I’ve been listening to loads of Van Morrison. What do you do to maintain your healthy lifestyle? I journal every single morning to take care of my brain. I love to travel and get outside with my dog, Sal. I’ve been getting into cooking lately because I’m Italian and 32, so it’s time. Having home-cooked meals and taking care of being in control of what goes into my body to nourish it has really helped me maintain a healthy lifestyle because it’s more mental than anything.
Moving to LA and spending two years auditioning before landing Kevin from Work must have brought some powerful lessons in resilience and self-belief. Can you share some of the things you experienced?
What are you eating?
Moving to LA from New York City was a quick decision for me. Thankfully, I was surrounded by amazing women that are still my best friends and strongest support system today, other than my family, of course. So that was a huge factor in my sanity. I honestly love to audition. I loved getting to see the huge movie lots for the first time and being surrounded by all these artists that wanted to do the same thing as me. I never really got to experience that until I moved to LA. So, I feel that when most people may be overwhelmed by this and see it as a challenge, I just was super freaking pumped to have made it in the waiting rooms with these beautiful, talented people. I still can’t believe I get a chance at this, that I get to aim for my dream and get in these rooms and talk with people that make movies and tv shows I admire so much. I truly am in love with the process of filmmaking.

Well, my Uncle Benji just gave the cousins and me a master class in our family’s recipe for Italian sausage and peppers and meatballs and sauce, so I’ve been having that either as something or as a side for the past week.

Carnegie Museums Membership Reaches Record 34,780
After losing 22% of its members during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, Carnegie Museums added more than 8,270 individuals and families to its member ranks in the past year, setting a record for total paid membership.

uilding back and diversifying our member base after such a challenging period is certainly something to celebrate,” said Steven Knapp, president and CEO of Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh. “We could not have predicted the speed with which our member community would more than restore itself.” Since the summer of 2021, Carnegie Museums’ paid member base grew by 8,270 individuals and families. That includes more than 3,000 first-time members who have joined at a greatly reduced Family Access membership rate. In November 2021, Carnegie Museums announced the creation of three Community Access Memberships aimed at expanding access to its museums: a free Teen membership, a greatly reduced Family Access membership for lower-income households, and an Organizational Outreach membership for nonprofit groups serving youth, seniors, and individuals and families experiencing homelessness. Less than a year later, more than 12,400 young people have signed up for free teen memberships to Carnegie Museums; more than 3,400 lower-income families have joined at the Family Access rate; and more than 70 non-profit organizations have gained free access to the four Carnegie Museums when visiting with the clients they serve. Founded by Andrew Carnegie in 1895, Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh is a family of four dynamic, distinctive museums: Carnegie Museum of Art, Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Carnegie Science Center, and The Andy Warhol Museum. Sting F brings magic to the
Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in January 2023!
or the first time in Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra history, world renowned musician Sting will join the Orchestra to perform his greatest hits reimagined with symphonic arrangement. The concerts will take place on January 9 and 10, 2023 at 7:30 P.M. at Heinz Hall.
Drawing from a diverse and illustrious career that has produced numerous multi-platinum albums, a staggering list of number one songs, countless accolades, and worldwide record sales of nearly 100 million, Sting’s greatest hits will be performed and reinterpreted with orchestrations first created for his 2010 Symphonicity tour. Selections will include fan-favorites such as “Roxanne,” “Next To You,” “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” and “Every Breath You Take,” and notable songs from Sting’s solo career – “Englishman in New York,” “Fragile,” “Russians,” “If I Ever Lose My Faith in You,” “Fields of Gold,” and “Desert Rose.” Known for blazing new paths of musical territory, Sting’s foray into the classical realm began with the crossover success of his #1 album Songs from the Labyrinth, a lute-based interpretation of the music of 16th century composer John Dowland, released in 2006 on Deutsche Grammophon. Sting’s interest in collaborating with an orchestra continued in 2008 following an invitation to perform with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. After reworking selections from his expansive catalog, he and several members of his longtime band joined the orchestra in a performance that left an indelible mark on Sting. In 2010, accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, Sting embarked on a world tour performing his most celebrated songs reimagined for symphonic arrangement.

omposer, singer-songwriter, actor, author, and activist Sting was born in Newcastle, England before moving to London in 1977 to form The Police with Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers. The band released five studio albums, earned six GRAMMY Awards® and two Brits, and was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003.

Following his critically acclaimed album, 57th & 9th, his first rock/ pop collection in over a decade, Sting and reggae icon, Shaggy, both managed by the Cherrytree Music Company, released a collaborative, island-influenced album, entitled 44/876, drawing from the many surprising connections at the heart of their music. Sting has appeared in more than 15 films, executive produced the critically acclaimed A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, and in 1989 starred in The Threepenny Opera on Broadway. His most recent theatre project is the Tony®-nominated musical The Last Ship, inspired by his memories of the shipbuilding community of Wallsend in the northeast of England where he was born and raised. The show, with music and lyrics by Sting, ran on Broadway in 2014/2015 and completed a UK regional theatre tour which ran from March-July 2018. Thereafter, Sting starred as shipyard foreman Jackie White in the Toronto-based production of The Last Ship at the Princess of Wales Theatre. In 2020, he reprised the role for productions in Los Angeles at the Ahmanson Theatre and San Francisco at the Golden Gate Theatre.

Sting’s support for human rights organizations such as the Rainforest Fund, Amnesty International, and Live Aid mirrors his art in its universal outreach. Along with wife Trudie Styler, Sting founded the Rainforest Fund in 1989 to protect both the world’s rainforests and the indigenous people living there. Together they have held 19 benefit concerts to raise funds and awareness for our planet’s endangered resources. Since its inception, the Rainforest Fund has expanded to a network of interconnected organizations working in more than 20 countries over three continents.

ith 20 years of experience, Spoon brought high energy to Stage AE Outdoors. The synergies among the members as they crooned to the crowd made it clear that these guys genuinely like one another and love what they do. With a musical history as deep as this band’s, it was easy to see how the band has fans of all ages, and that no one felt like an Underdog. Spoon released their debut studio album, Telephono, in 1996 through Matador Records and a full-length album, A Series of Sneaks, in 1998 with Elektra Records. After signing with Merge Records, Spoon released the albums, Girls Can Tell (2001), Kill the Moonlight (2002), Gimme Fiction (2005), Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (2007), and Transference (2010). The band next signed with Loma Vista Recordings and ANTI- for the release of They Want My Soul (2014) and returned to Matador to release their ninth album Hot Thoughts (2017), and tenth album Lucifer on the Sofa (2022). A
nimal Scream is a visionary new art rock/dream pop duo from collaborators Chad Monticue and Josh Sickels. The two longtime friends previously composed one-half of the acclaimed Pittsburgh psych-pop outfit 1,2,3, whose debut album New Heaven was released on Frenchkiss Records in 2011, followed by their conceptually sprawling 2014 double album, Big Weather. Drawing inspiration from music and film alike, Animal Scream’s influences range from David Lynch to MF DOOM, with hints of ’60s reggae. Their debut album Nightwalk (released in the early pandemic black hole of April 2020) fused bottom-heavy constellations of dub and Motown influences, while carving out nocturnal soundscapes for the alienated and brokenhearted. Yet the supernatural dimension of Animal Scream’s music never belies the emotional core underneath. A sense of desolation and loneliness permeates throughout, as in new single “Fires After Dark” — an anthemic rave-up whose roots date back to the fever dream of summer 2020, when riots and protests for racial justice consumed the nation.

Kaylen Davidson of Sara Judith Events Event Planner Brings Love to Pittsburgh
I
n 2018, Kaylen Davidson’s wedding was featured in WHIRL Magazine. The gorgeous images of the duo and their party brought suggestions from family and friends on their own festivities, and Kaylen soon realized her passion for love and all of its trimmings would make a fine business venture. After working for some of the top event planners in Los Angeles, where she lived for 11 years, Kaylen is back in Pittsburgh as owner of the Sara Judith Events, a company that she named after her cow.
“We were driving out in the country in Vermont late at night and a calf ran out in front of our RV. Thankfully we didn’t hit her, but I was concerned about her so we stopped and I got out. I saw she had tags in her ears so I knew she belonged to a cattle farm somewhere nearby.

I’m a vegan and an active animal advocate, so it was like the worst Sophie’s Choice situation for me to either take her back to the farm where her life would be cut short, or let her be free where she could easily get hit by a car and suffer. We opted to get her back to safety. Until the farmer showed up, I sat with her on the side of the road singing, “You Are My Sunshine” over and over to keep her calm until the farmer showed up. Fun fact! Cows are drawn to and love music.
It took two weeks to get the farmer to agree to let us give her a chance at life, and the day we brought her home and removed her tags is one I will never forget. While we may have rescued Sara Judith that night, I truly feel she rescued me. She expanded my heart in a way I haven’t felt before and she brings so much joy to my life. When I was trying to choose what to name my company, I kept coming back to her. The joy she gives to me is the joy I strive to see in my clients, so it was fitting that I name it after her.”
When the farmer arrived, he informed us she escapes quite often, which just made my heart sink. Knowing she was trying to leave her ultimate destiny on that farm, I took one look at my husband and without having to say a word, he said “Yes, we can try to rescue her, but she is going to outgrow us very fast. We need somewhere for her to live.” Within a few days I found a sanctuary that takes in unwanted and abused farm animals who had a cow who needed a friend, and we made an agreement that she could live on their property.
Kaylen is now based in Pittsburgh looking to expand her business here in her hometown. She offers full-scale design and planning, partial planning and month-of coordination for weddings and events. Sara Judith resides at the Little Red Barn Farm Sanctuary in Tunbridge, VT where Kaylen and her husband visit as often as they can. layna and Eric were high school sweethearts, even though they attended different schools. He went to Mars Area High School and she went to Pine Richland. They met through mutual friends and hit it off. They also attended different colleges but made the long distance relationship work. When Eric graduated dental school, they moved to Columbus, Ohio where he began his practice and she took on a job as a Dietician at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. They chose to get married in Pittsburgh as both of their families still reside in town and it’s where their love story began. Meet the
Photographers
Karl Roser Karl Roser is entering his 14th season with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Karl’s time with the organization began in 2004 when he as hired as a photography intern. He was then promoted to team photographer and currently is the Manager of Photography. He photographs everything from studio portraits, community events, practice, and game days. He also oversees and manages the Steelers extensive photographic archive. In 2021, his photo capturing an intimate glimpse of Ben Roethlisberger’s final moments as a member of Pittsburgh Steelers was awarded Honorable Mention in the 54th Annual Pro Football Hall of Fame Photo Contest. He resides in Leetsdale with his wife Emily and their four children, Cambria, Greta, Dietrich and Ingrid.
Abigail Dean Abigail Dean is entering her first season with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Prior to the Steelers, Abigail spent a year with the Indianapolis Colts as their photography intern. She attended Ohio University where she majored in Photojournalism. While in school Abigail worked in athletics as an intern in their photography department. When she isn’t capturing photos, she enjoys going to the gym and spending time outdoors. She currently resides in Cranberry Township.
