The Children’s Aid Home expands beyond Somerset County Allegheny County children benefit from the programs NEEDS-BASED, COMPASSION-FOCUSED
by David

by Melissa
About a quarter of a century ago, the Children’s Aid Society Foundation was formed to “develop, grow, and distribute resources to support, guide, and enhance the lives of children and families in need.” Today this quiet grassroots Foundation owns a 50 acre campus in Somerset and manages an endowment of greater than $15 million dollars from which grants are made to support organizations doing the heavy lifting, caring for children’s needs in Western Pennsylvania. The Foundation is growing, and so is its impact, this year giving grants to such organizations as Beverley’s Birthdays and bringing Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to a rural mountain town, as well as providing operational support and program funding to The Children’s Aid Home and Programs, which predates the Foundation by almost a century. The Home also rents space in a state of the art facility on the pastoral campus owned by the foundation, where it provides a full spectrum of 5-star services to children and their families. The philanthropic work is accomplished by pooling donor contributions and collaborating with other funders and institutions, to make sure that children have access to healthy food, mental health services, foster and adoptive homes, quality education, a roof over their head,. cannot help but be impressed by the way this pair non-profit organizations, The Foundation and The Home, work together The Foundation is committed to growing the community of donors and partners involved in this work and has begun a campaign to expand its reach across Western Pennsylvania by providing opportunities for philanthropic individuals, companies and other foundations to invest in this deeply critical work providing “provide a continuum of quality services, which promote the emotional, behavioral, educational and physical development of children, adolescents, and their families.” Philanthropic investment in the Children’s Aid Society Foundation in recent years has come from through corporate and family foundations, as well as individuals.

WHIRL / SMALL BUSINESS Bean Candle Company started with my love for candles and the warmth they bring. To me, a candle flame represents life. A candle can completely transform a space, a mood, even a mindset.
Knowing that Bean Candle Company brings comfort and wellness to someone’s day—and creates gifts people are proud to give—is what keeps me inspired. Honestly, it’s the joy of seeing people connect with our candles and make them a meaningful part of their daily lives.Plus, being able to craft something sustainable, beautiful, and beneficial for well-being makes every step truly worth it.
I wanted to create candles that would make any space feel more relaxing and inviting, bringing those little moments of calm and joy we all need. I realized a thoughtfully made candle could be so much more than just an extraordinary scent. My goal is to craft candles you can feel good about burning, using clean, natural ingredients that are safe for you, your family, and your pets.
Bean Candle Company www.beancandlecompany.com
I’m excited to keep creating wellness-focused candles and bringing Bean Candle Company into more boutiques that share my passion.Looking ahead, I’ll be introducing more unique, travel-inspired scents, exploring other home fragrance products, and, in the search for the perfect space, opening a retail store. Currently, I’m focused on expanding our offerings to include new sizes—like 2-wick, 3wick, and travel tins—and building partnerships with local businesses that share our commitment to quality and wellness. It’s all about helping people create a sanctuary at home, embracing the benefits of clean, natural products with amazing, long-lasting scents that encourage mindfulness and well-being.

How do you help cancer patients?
What is the favorite part of your work?
I help cancer survivors by providing Paramedical Esthetics and Tattooing for their scars and areolas, as well as removing their radiation markers. Fitness enthusiasts will appreciate Helm’s fully equipped gym, eliminating any excuse to skip a workout.
Pittsburgh is exploding with new developments that offer incredible living options. A recent visit to the Helm on the Allegheny brought amazement at the sun-filled spaces, huge windows, and friendly atmosphere. The living arrangements are unique, with home office spaces that are contemporary in concept and design. The Helm melds the industrial architecture of the building with the natural flow of the Allegheny River. Megan Stearman, the Vice President, Communications and Corporate Responsibility for Oxford Development, describes the complex’s theme as one that enables people to “Chart Your Course.” What does "Chart Your Course" mean? Everyone tells you to slow down and take a moment to soak it all in. It’s good advice. At one point during the reception we just stopped and looked around the room. Family and friends from all around the country and all around the world were laughing and dancing together under one roof. 133 individual souls became one family brought together by their support for our marriage. It was joyful and humbling - and also somewhat sad as I realized that this was the only time that this group of exceptional people would be in the same room together. But I guess that is another thing that makes weddings so magical.

LEMONT RESTAURANT LeMont General Manager Marco Corona has had two interesting careers. For 44 years, he has worked at LeMont starting as a pot washer, a pantry cook, a busboy, a banquet waiter, and a la carte waiter. “The holiday season is magical at LeMont,” says Marco. “Starting with Light Up Night in November to Christmas Eve to New Year’s Eve to Valentine’s Day, we share the spirit of the holidays with our customers - old and new, young and old”. His concurrent career, until his retirement, was 32 years as an educator. He worked for 25 years as a social studies teacher and basketball coach and seven years as an assistant principal. “Yes, I did work both full time jobs simultaneously!!!” says Marco. Like almost every LeMont staff member, Rack-of-Lamb is Marco’s favorite meal. He also enjoys the Raspberry Duck, Seabass and any dessert! The best part of his job is meeting new and interesting people from all over the country and the world. With his over four decades at LeMont, hosting his son's rehearsal dinner and his daughter's baby shower were one of his favorite memories, “Everything was absolutely perfect and my family still talks about those events to this day!” adds Marco. "Our most cherished memories are on Christmas Eve when my family comes up for dinner. Of course, I work that day but we still get to spend that time together. This has been a tradition since my kids were kids. Now, the dinner is getting better because the grandkids come as well!”
Outside of work, Marco says: “Cars are my thing!” Marco has a wonderful wife, son, daughter and three grandchildren. “I was raised in Mount Washington,” says Marco. “I used to walk to work when I was young. I currently reside in Zelienople.”
Marco has so many favorite LeMont memories. ”Although I've waited on numerous celebrities, athletes and famous political figures during my long tenure here, my fondest memory was waiting on a father and his young daughter,” remembers Marco. “The two of them came in early one evening for dinner. At first, they didn't talk much. But as I began to interact with them and gradually bring them their order, they both opened up to me and to each other. By the end of the evening, we were all laughing and really enjoying ourselves. A week or so later, the gentleman wrote to me and said that it was the first time he was out with his daughter after he and her mother split up. He admitted that it was kind of awkward at first, but that their experience with the great food, view and service really helped them to relax and bond. It's those little things that really matter.”

LeMont banquet and wedding packages include a price range from $60 to $90 to $120 per person, in addition to the Simple Elegance Wedding Package at $99 per person that includes food and bar. After 44 years at LeMont, Bill’s favorite memory is still the first time that he walked into LeMont. “Even though I grew up a few miles from the restaurant, I had never been here until my first day of work”, says Bill. “I still remember being blown away by the beauty of the restaurant and the amazing view.”
