NEEDS-BASED, COMPASSION-FOCUSED
About a quarter of a century ago, the Children’s Aid Society Foundation was formed to “develop, grow, and distribute resources to support, guide, and enhance the lives of children and families in need ”
by David
by Joe
Today this quiet grassroots Foundation owns a 50 acre campus in Somerset and manages an endowment of greater than $15 million dollars from which grants are made to support organizations doing the heavy lifting, caring for children’s needs in Western Pennsylvania The Foundation is growing, and so is its impact, this year giving grants to such organizations as Beverley’s Birthdays and bringing Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to a rural mountain town, as well as providing operational support and program funding to The Children’s Aid Home and Programs, which predates the Foundation by almost a century. The Home also rents space in a state of the art facility on the pastoral campus owned by the foundation, where it provides a full spectrum of 5-star services to children and their families. The philanthropic work is accomplished by pooling donor contributions and collaborating with other funders and institutions, to make sure that children have access to healthy food, mental health services, foster and adoptive homes, quality education, a roof over their head,. cannot help but be impressed by the way this pair non-profit organizations, The Foundation and The Home, work together The Foundation is committed to growing the community of donors and partners involved in this work and has begun a campaign to expand its reach across Western Pennsylvania by providing opportunities for philanthropic individuals, companies and other foundations to invest in this deeply critical work providing “provide a continuum of quality services, which promote the emotional, behavioral, educational and physical development of children, adolescents, and their families.”
Philanthropic investment in the Children’s Aid Society Foundation in recent years has come from through corporate and family foundations, as well as individuals.

The Children’s Aid Home Programs
The Children's Aid Home provides an exciting future for our children, families, and staff Our facility, the Shoemaker Home, is 37,420 square feet and is located on the Wheeler Campus, a 55-acre property located on State Route 601 just north of the Borough of Somerset.
The building includes single bedrooms for all residents in three wings. The building design allows for two additional wings. The building has many private rooms for family visits. A multi-purpose room is used for dining and recreation
There is a classroom and counseling rooms in the Partial Hospitalization wing
The agency provides Residential Care for children between the ages of 12 and 18. Our ability to respond to the challenges of youth with emotional and behavioral difficulties has led to a greater demand for Children’s Aid to care for troubled, neglected and abused young people These young people respond to a structured therapeutic milieu, which addresses their medical, social and emotional issues. The Home can house 24 adolescents.
To learn more about becoming a foster and/ or adoptive family, contact us and request to meet a caseworker. You will need to complete the paperwork, and obtain Act 33/34 and FBI clearances. You will also need to complete the required training and meet home safety requirements. Our staff will help you work through the process so that you can become a foster and/or adoptive family and help a child or children in need.
The Partial Hospitalization Program for boys and girls between ages 12 to 18 is a non-residential day treatment program that includes specially tailored psychiatric and education programs We offer two programs with a total capacity for 45 students, one located at the Home and one at Somerset Area School District.
Somerset Area School District has contracted with The Children’s Aid Home to provide the Somerset Area Options Program to the school district’s students The Somerset Area Options Program provides academic instruction and behavioral counseling to the students placed in this program. The students who participate are identified by the school district. Each student receives academic instruction and is assigned a counselor Counseling services address behaviors that are problematic in the public school setting to assist the student in eventually returning to public school. Behavior management plans are developed for each individual student These plans are regularly reviewed by the staff with the student, their parents and the school to assess the progress towards meeting the goals of the plan. Our staff works collaboratively with the school to assist the students so they can successfully return to public school

“With Bean Candle Company, it's all about adding a touch of well-being and warmth to the sanctuary we call home ”
Laura Palmer
Bean Candle Company started with my love for candles and the warmth they bring. To me, a candle flame represents life. A candle can completely transform a space, a mood, even a mindset.
I wanted to create candles that would make any space feel more relaxing and inviting, bringing those little moments of calm and joy we all need. I realized a thoughtfully made candle could be so much more than just an extraordinary scent.
My goal is to craft candles you can feel good about burning, using clean, natural ingredients that are safe for you, your family, and your pets.
Knowing that Bean Candle Company brings comfort and wellness to someone’s day and creates gifts people are proud to give is what keeps me inspired Honestly, it’s the joy of seeing people connect with our candles and make them a meaningful part of their daily lives.Plus, being able to craft something sustainable, beautiful, and beneficial for well-being makes every step truly worth it.
I’m excited to keep creating wellness-focused candles and bringing Bean Candle Company into more boutiques that share my passion.Looking ahead, I’ll be introducing more unique, travel-inspired scents, exploring other home fragrance products, and, in the search for the perfect space, opening a retail store. Currently, I’m focused on expanding our offerings to include new sizes like 2-wick, 3wick, and travel tins—and building partnerships with local businesses that share our commitment to quality and wellness. It’s all about helping people create a sanctuary at home, embracing the benefits of clean, natural products with amazing, long-lasting scents that encourage mindfulness and well-being.
Erica McIlroy’s focus on wellness led her to create this special retreat.

The Roberto Clemente Bridge, also known as the Sixth Street Bridge connects Downtown Pittsburgh to the North Shore According to local photographers, the iconic golden bridge is the new top spot for wedding photos, topping the traditional Mt. Washington backdrop shot!
The tremendous structure, built in 1928, is metaphorical as well as picturesque.
The 884 feet long suspension bridge is a powerful reminder of love’s abilities to provide safe passage over life’s rivers.

-Arianna

LeMont General Manager Marco Corona has had two interesting careers. For 44 years, he has worked at LeMont starting as a pot washer, a pantry cook, a busboy, a banquet waiter, and a la carte waiter.
“The holiday season is magical at LeMont,” says Marco. “Starting with Light Up Night in November to Christmas Eve to New Year’s Eve to Valentine’s Day, we share the spirit of the holidays with our customers - old and new, young and old”. His concurrent career, until his retirement, was 32 years as an educator. He worked for 25 years as a social studies teacher and basketball coach and seven years as an assistant principal. “Yes, I did work both full time jobs simultaneously!!!” says Marco.
Like almost every LeMont staff member, Rack-of-Lamb is Marco’s favorite meal He also enjoys the Raspberry Duck, Seabass and any dessert! The best part of his job is meeting new and interesting people from all over the country and the world.
With his over four decades at LeMont, hosting his son's rehearsal dinner and his daughter's baby shower were one of his favorite memories, “Everything was absolutely perfect and my family still talks about those events to this day!” adds Marco. "Our most cherished memories are on Christmas Eve when my family comes up for dinner. Of course, I work that day but we still get to spend that time together. This has been a tradition since my kids were kids. Now, the dinner is getting better because the grandkids come as well!”
Marco has so many favorite LeMont memories
”Although I've waited on numerous celebrities, athletes and famous political figures during my long tenure here, my fondest memory was waiting on a father and his young daughter,” remembers Marco. “The two of them came in early one evening for dinner. At first, they didn't talk much. But as I began to interact with them and gradually bring them their order, they both opened up to me and to each other By the end of the evening, we were all laughing and really enjoying ourselves. A week or so later, the gentleman wrote to me and said that it was the first time he was out with his daughter after he and her mother split up. He admitted that it was kind of awkward at first, but that their experience with the great food, view and service really helped them to relax and bond. It's those little things that really matter.”
LEMONT RESTAURANT
LEMONT RESTAURANT
“New Year’s Eve is my favorite holiday to work since it is the final day of our busiest month of the year,” says Bill. “And, the following day is the beginning of a new year!”
LeMont Banquet Manager Bill Laughlin is a favorite of LeMont brides and their mothers. The most frequent comment about Bill is: ‘We love Bill! He does everything that we asked for during our wedding reception!’
LeMont has hosted over 8,000 weddings over the years. LeMont banquet and wedding packages include a price range from $60 to $90 to $120 per person, in addition to the Simple Elegance Wedding Package at $99 per person that includes food and bar.
After 44 years at LeMont, Bill’s favorite memory is still the first time that he walked into LeMont.
“Even though I grew up a few miles from the restaurant, I had never been here until my first day of work”, says Bill. “I still remember being blown away by the beauty of the restaurant and the amazing view.”
HYDE PARK PRIME STEAKHOUSE
Is constantly reinventing new dishes, and this S’Mores treat is a prime example!
While the North Shore establishment is revered for steak done to perfection, this sweet concoction is a delicious final course for a memorable meal. It’s made with chocolate, marshmallows, and graham crackers, plus special secret ingredients.
This delightful dessert captures every element- creamy texture, a bit of crunch, and a lick of lucsiousness, suggesting a sexy ending to the evening, ideal for Valentine’s Day.

MJ Lenderman
released a new album, Manning Fireworks, that is bring hailed as one of the best indie-rock albums of the year by critics and fans alike, and marks a remarkable development in Lenderman’s story as an incisive singer songwriter whose propensity for humor always points to some uneasy, disorienting darkness.
Having sold out shows all across the country in 2024 and into 2025, Lenderman’s star continues to rise. His world-weary songwriting style, rendered with a clarity and care, make his songs feel like short films, relatable to all who listen.
